Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

We probably should talk to the local white court just to establish the pecking order.

Edit: Need to walk in with Lydia and Olivia behind us on either side.

Nice Grandma (TM) was an agent of Odin. Local practitioners in places without orders of cauldron or similar are random people.

We know from how the Masquerade is upheld pretty much everyone's had encounters with the supernatural but no one holds any kind of coherent picture and without an order there is no real gathering of information other than yeah this particular creature exists or yeah this other particular creature exists or I had to run in with this particular person who was this kind of creature Maybe.

Those are all valuable in their own way but they're not any kind of comprehensive picture like the dossier that Grandma gave us. Without an ability to literally see into the Never Never or anything else minor practitioners literally have no way to know or even interact with the Well.
In canon the Reds aren't subtle. Like at all. If they were particularly active here the people they prefer to prey upon (magic practitioners who are too weak to defend themselves but seem to taste better than normies) would be well aware of that fact. Talents talk to each other to stay safe as Cauldron shows.

We literally just got through speaking to a minor practitioner who interacted with the Well. Clearly this isn't the case.

I did edit my comment so it said no other practitioner but he also only interacted with it when the Warlock was still alive. And it also doesn't change the fact that unless you have the ability to open a way into the never never like that warlock did they have no way in. Without the ability to see it and with no ability to enter it because the owner isn't around to open it anymore the well is an interesting curiosity at best and something that will slowly but surely be eaten by the local nevernever over time at worst. (and that warlock definitely broke the law of enthralling another because he just absolutely mind fucked him into thinking there was a medical and a person who needed medical help in that little space it occurs to me now do illusions count.)

And? We've got names of people who interacted with the Well in some capacity. Therefore they may have useful intel, why do you think they'd know nothing relevant to our reasons for being here? Doesn't matter if none of those people can go in of their own will or not, which we have no way of even knowing without talking to them.

I am pretty sure you told her way back when you pulled information on Mab out of the ether. I'll have to check, though probably tomorrow, it is getting pretty late.
I don't recall us using the Crown on Mab, what did we ask for? Please let me know if you find it or if anyone else does for that matter. I really can't remember telling Lydia of the Crown and I'm looking for it.

I don't remember ever telling her in quest, but I do remember the general assumption that as a circle member we trust her with our secrets.

Yeah but this is literally our biggest and most dangerous secret and everyone has things they don't tell even their most trusted allies. Thats why there's the saying "everyone has secrets". I'm fine with it if it happened I just want to know why and when so I can reread the discussion surrounding it.

Also telling Lydia is telling her father which is a different thing all together.

Edit: Like I'm hoping we didn't tell Olivia about it, she doesn't need to know details even if it's obvious that Molly has some precognition going on other people already know that much.

Lydia was very glad Molly and her Crown was on their side.
Heh. I bet her dad's reactions to the crown have been fun. He's basically the only old supernatural other than Bob* who knows, and has been a player in it for a lot longer. Bob gets it, but Arawn has practical experience with how much of a difference it could really make.

* and technically heaven, but they operate a step removed from the supernatural world for the most part.

We didn't use it on Mab directly for multiple reasons, we used it on Mister because he was in the room when Harry spoke with her.

I don't actually recall us telling Lydia either, but we also use and reference the ability freely in front of her to the point where it wouldn't totally surprise me if she had the general concept and name even if we didn't lay it out for her.

I looked and you are indeed right, you guys did not tell Lydia about the Crown, took out references to it by name, but she did just see you pull out information out of the ether so she does know you are at least capable of very high level divination, just not how broken it really is.

I am unsure if the death of its creator rendered the Well impossible to interact with. The timing of when Karl passed his test is unclear. We know that Johann of Cleves was disposed of by Odin before Halloween. But Karl could have interacted with the Well after that, and it's framed as if the Well can suck people in without them noticing:
Instead of answering with words you motion at Lydia, silently communing with dogs on the couch. We're going to think you're crazy.

"I went to get help and I found a bunch of people downstairs but when I tried to find the room with the burned student again, it was gone, the room, the patient, everything. They called it a bad joke."

"That sounds like you slipped into the spirit world," Lydia offers. "You were given a test, you passed it, by the very edge of what your magic would allow and then you were allowed to leave. The Well if a proving ground, that is why they choose an university to anchor it, not just any university one of the best in the world. It is an unfinished proving ground."
That might be an automatic function of the place.

Thanks, how much essence do we have right now?

We need to regen before crossing over to the Well after all is said and done.
[X] Same approach as with Karl
-[X] NWS from stealth first, then direct approach with either empathy, etiquette or intimidation excellency depending on results

Finally found the time to answer about the scouting thing:
Why would ghost or people associated with the Well "definitely not know anything of the supernatural scene"? The last guy we talked to was unexpected we thought he'd know of the scene since he interacted with the Well. What makes you think none of them know anything relevant to our purposes here?

The problem is that we are not scouting for the local scene.

We came here for that originally, maybe, but as soon as we saw the well, none of our actions have had any relation with scouting the local supernatural factions, and everything to do with the well.

And the thing is, we got a pretty fast answer on how much the locals know about this, and it's nada, Odin himself was wrong about what was happening.

As such, this is why I am saying we should stop *scouting* and start acting, because we are dragging on this part of the arc with the unnecessary search for information that we would get faster by going in and looking at the scenery.

Then if you want to return to scouting the local scene, we could, but at least now it would actually be about that.

Edit:

Also, since Yog admitted to be doing this to search for foci:

You know what would be a great foci to learn more about the well? The inside of it.

Go in, ask whatever the most important question you want is, get actual info right from the source.

What makes you think the people we are after know nothing???
Carl Bennet, Nora Long, Silvia Lopez You get a flash of faces, like snapshots out the window of a moving train, all mortal, all with some information about the Well.
We're doing a seance to ask the dead about those on this list because they can't be found online.

I am doing this for foci. I am not doing this only for foci. We learned about someone supernatural attending Harvard under an assumed name. That's useful for scouting the area in general, not just for the Well investigation. It's also valuable to have foci before we go in, in case the information is relevant for what we need to bring with us (like stuff to rescue people with, or reagents to complete the crafting of the realm).

I recognize the desire to finally do something, to delve into the exciting magical realm, but as far as I can see, there's no immediate urgency, nothing to compromise the preparation for. I apologize if this is not very exciting. Personally, I find the rewards for the investigative actions, like uncovering a fake name steel faeblooded exciting.

The fact that all knowing Odin knows nothing.

Edit:

I mean, we have already been to the local information broker, on direct recommendation from her boss, here is everything she told us about the well:

*this space intentionally left blank*

Why do you think others would know more?

Because the Crown gave us a list of people who have information on the Well and the Crown never lies? We already got some info on the Well that Odin didn't give us and other people on the list may be more active with the Well.

Who says he knows nothing? His goal seems to be to get us involved here, though his reasons for that are harder to pin down*. Odin is exactly the type of guy to leave a bit mystery for us to unwrap spontaneously so that our first visit becomes an engaging one, and so that we don't have as much lead time to handle it some other way.

The guy is largely well meaning in the sense that he cares about mortals and has comprehensible morals, but he's earned his reputation for being manipulative.

I don't think this is hostile to be clear, he basically gift wrapped a mystery and gave it as a surprise present to a budding titan that feeds on secrets**, but he couldn't place a lunch order without meddling in the waiter's life on sheer reflex.

*Its likely the goal is to get us focused outside of Chicago to some degree, but I doubt the reason he wants that is as simple as supporting Marcone or reducing pressure within the city.

** That is to say literally giving candy to a baby from a certain perspective. :V
