Arc 11 Post 50: The Door Across the Way
The Door Across the Way

12th of January 2007 A.D.

If I was alone I could just outrun them, you think, thoughts of vengeful Greek Gods foremost on your mind then the penny drops. "Hang on!"

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 10/15

"Hang on to wh... Whoa!" Lash's question trails off into an exclamation as you grab her Lydia and Harry under the arms and book it down the corridor the sound of grinding stone on stone echoing behind you.

One, two doors pass in the speed of your passing, the first golden the second silver that would not look out of place on the Strip 'above' then a third door of bronze burnished mirror-bright and quite locked. Of course it's locked Molly, it's a prison. "Darn, I'm going to have to carve this up," you shout, sword already in hand. The guard statues can't be more than a ten seconds behind.

"Not that one!" Lydia shouts. "Feels like... trap."

Tiffany curses, in some guttural, likely long forgotten tongue. "I've got this, close your eyes."

And so you do. A precious few seconds pass by, more cursing then see it even through your eyelids a flash of white light that settles down into a steady even radiance. Reflected in the bronze door, the false door you now realize, is one across from it of iron though casual scrutiny reveals only a plain limestone wall. Using the reflection Lash reaches for the latch in the hidden door and opens it, giving you all time to duck inside just in time.

The room on the other side has limestone walls are painted vivid greens and browns, almost eerily bright blues making up a scene of the oasis in the midst of the harsh New Mexico desert that had given the city the name Las Vegas. Against this backdrop, sprawled on a bed that is at least half a bench to your eyes a man passed out. He is thin and pale with dark hair already showing a receding hairline, but handsome almost because of it than in spite of it, as a flaw might make a sculpture all the more intriguing: Kenneth Mayeda.

"What's wrong with him?" Harry asks, or starts to at least, the last word can only be guessed against the sound of stone claws screeching against the door

"We need to get out of here, come on!" Even as Lydia speaks the words you can feel the coiling of her essence on the air, starting to blast a portal back to the mortal world.

"We don't know where would leave us," you say, but she shakes her head and points at the door you had passed through.

"We do know where that goes and it does not sound like a good time."

What do you do?

[] Take your chances with the guardians
-[] You're pretty sure you can blow past them
-[] Smash them already, they certainly do not sound concerned about your good health after all

[] Open a path to whatever is on the other side in the material world
-[] Lydia Open the Way (3 Dice DC 6; 1 Success Needed Cost 2 Essence)
-[] Molly Open Calibration's Gate (11/20 Dice DC 3; 5 Successes Needed; Cost 4 Essence Stays Open)
-[] Harry Aparturum (5 Dice; DC 6; 3 Successes Needed; No Cost)

[] Write in

OOC: Alas very short, but that is kind of the nature of being in the middle of a high speed chase. For anyone wondering Harry would normally need only 2 succeses to open a way, but he is in the middle of a domain. Exalted do not have to deal with that since in exchange it runs you out of a limited resource.

Lash can check on his health later.

Rolls
Mind Hand Manipulation
Noticing the Trap: Lash, Lydia
Lash to remember how this kind of illusion works
Tiffany Light: 1; 2 (Good thing these don't cost her anything)
8 successes on an Int + Occult roll(Key ability) means that Molly can MHM 4000 pounds.
She can lift Mayeda along with everybody in this room no problem.

Right now, Im minded to simply spend 1m on activating Windborn Stride and speedblitzing our way out of here.
With CCC active in addition to BSM + Without Honor and Transcendent Lord of Flies, we can basically run over them like in a cartoon. Or just run on the ceiling. Cheapest option on the table here.

And Harry's shield is good enough to protect against impact or glancing damage

@DragonParadox
QUESTION
1) Are we responsible for La Llorona, or will she find her own way out?
2) If we make it back to our entry point, do we need assistance to get out?
3) How long does it take Harry to put up his shield? I recall him using it block a hallway in Blood Rites against multiple flamethrowers, and later near the end of the book he uses it to outram the force of an accelerating car at the Raith chateau.
Simply putting it up while Molly carries everyone else seems straightforward. Especially if Molly is moving at the cruising speed of a WW2 fighter plane.

  1. She is the one who let you in so you should be fine on that point
  2. Probably, someone could have changed those paths, or made the currents worse etc... but they would have to have been acting inside less than 20 seconds
  3. One round assuming he gets at least one success, each success eats two levels of damage and he can just keep throwing arette rolls at it each round until it gets overwhelmed or he rolls a botch

Molly is the person here who is both has the biggest pool of Essence/equivalent magic juice, and the easiest way of recovering it. So she should spend it.
She currently has the following effects active:
  • Boiling Sea Mastery: -1DC to all rolls while wet
  • Without Honor: +2 dice while cold
  • Cracked Cell Circumvention: -3DC to all rolls helping her escape confinement
She may also have Transcendent Lord of Flies active, which is -3DC to protect others in hostile, barren environments, like a trapped spirit domain with active, hostile guardian things.
Just goes to show that you shouldnt try to imprison, or corner an Infernal.

Molly already likely has the highest initiative here because of Windborn Stride's passive effects, so she gets to act first. And with the active version of Windborn Stride activated, her movement speed is 225mph, or 340 yards in a 3-second combat turn.

She is literally likely to be back at the starting position before the guardian constructs can try to start a fight.

Keep in mind there is only one door and those things are right outside of it, for the purposes of hitting you they each have a readied action, they can hit you as soon as you come through

On one hand this makes sense and aside from the wrinkle with readied actions from the defenders is the most practical option.

On the other we could CCG out in one round at that DC, which would be almost as funny as it would be dangerous for everyone in the immediate area.

Practicality takes it, but only by a narrow margin. :V

We've got a lot of force to throw around, could we drag cover with us, or knock down some walls to get around them?

Fair enough.

Adding Melee Excellency to plan to activate if necessary.
Shouldnt be necessary, since even a readied action has to get through Harry's mageshield bubble thing first, but might as well.
With the modifiers in play, Molly is going to be throwing 15+ successes on defense anyway.

That will slow you you down since you can only move at up to half your running speed and perform an action.
So instead of 340 yards in 3 seconds, she can only go 170 yards in 3 seconds.
Based on the previous update, thats still enough to put her and her war party well out of combat range.

We've got a lot of force to throw around, could we drag cover with us, or knock down some walls to get around them?
Trying to minimize offensive action if at all possible, just in case.
Else I would have Lash use Lore of Light 1 to flashbang the hostile guardians outside as soon as the door opens.
