Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Not compete, complement. The dress would be in the fashion of the Courts. It's an exotic gift that plays to their strengths and style, like how we made non-ferrous car.
I dont agree.

The effort required to match, let alone surpass Winter Fae in their own specialty is frankly well beyond what I think is a defensible investment for a reasonable Christmas gift.
Especially when you are talking about shit you're giving to the Queens, who have access to the best as a matter of course.

Take a look at what Mab gave Dresden's daughter Maggie as a Christmas gift, just to give you some perspective.
And the Queen of Air and Darkness stood above me.

Queen Mab was as tall as me tonight—it changed, based upon her mood and her intentions. Her skin was white as frost, her lips as dark as frozen mulberries, and her hair had been made from the first snowflakes to fall through the virgin air. She was stunningly beautiful, immortal, had the power of a demigoddess, was the unquestioned queen of the wicked fae—and she was my boss.

"My Knight," she murmured, inclining her head.

I wasn't sure what protocol dictated for this particular circumstance, so I bowed my head slightly and said, "Good evening."

"Guardian," Mab said. She bowed her head rather more deeply to Mouse.

I get no respect, no respect at all.

Mouse regarded Mab solemnly. His tail had stopped wagging. But he thumped a paw twice on the floor in response.

Mab regarded the circle of parts around me, her head tilted. "A conjuring?"

"Yeah. Kind of," I said, scratching at my hair. "You aren't here to call me in to work, I hope."

"Do not be ridiculous," she said. "It is Christmas."

I lifted my eyebrows. "Christmas spirit? You?"

She lifted her chin slightly. "Christmas falls within the realm of Winter, does it not?"

I huffed out a little laugh. "Yeah. I guess it does. But I thought you had people for that."

"I do," Mab said. "Yet…" She frowned, as if concentrating to make sure she repeated the phrase correctly. "It does not do for the boss to spend too much time in the office." She paused for a breath and then said, "I have brought your gift."

I think my jaw bounce off my knee before it landed in the pile of parts. "What?"

"You are participating in the holiday this year," Mab said. "I have an obligation to my vassals."

"What?" I repeated.

She took one hand out from behind her back and presented me with a small gift bag of wintry blue, covered with cheerful silver snowflakes.

I eyed the bag. "Is it going to explode? Or try to eat me?"

"Do not be tiresome," Mab sighed.

"Faeries don't give gifts," I said. "What kind of trick is this?"

"The kind that isn't," she replied. "I am not giving you a gift. I am fulfilling to you an obligation."

I felt a smile touch the corner of my mouth. "Obligation, eh? Suppose I don't accept?"

A pained expression touched her eyes for about a tenth of a second. "That would be your choice. As would be the consequences."

"Well. That's the first time I've ever been threatened into accepting a Christmas present," I said.

I took the bag. Inside was a jewelry box. Inside the jewelry box was a plain band that probably wouldn't have fit on my pinky. It was made from some kind of silvery, opalescent metal. I brushed a fingertip over it. It hummed with stored energy.

"Potent," I said. "What does it do?"

"It is meant for your daughter," Mab said. "And it will give her powers."

I snapped the box shut and eyed Mab. "Excuse me?"

She made an impatient sound. "Not like that, wizard," she said. "If you give her the ring she will… have a certain amount of influence, until next stroke of noon, over the forces of winter." She sighed. "And it will play music."

I narrowed my eyes. "What music?"

Mab leaned over, opened the box, and obligingly touched the ring. It immediately buzzed and the room filled with a swirl of music, as a woman's voice sang, "The snow glows white on the mountain tonight…"

I shut the box on the sound and eyed her. It was just possible that I'd already heard that song enough to make my teeth itch.

"Now I understand," I said drily.

"You are welcome," she replied.

"Just out of curiosity," I said, "is it going to be possible for her to freeze someone's heart and turn them into an ice statue?"

Mab looked baffled. "Those are the powers in the motion picture. Should I have cheated her?"

I rubbed at the spot between my eyes. "Got it. We'll go someplace nice and quiet to play with this gift."

"Make sure she knows who gave it to her," Mab said.

Then the fire guttered again. When it returned to life, it was golden and merry, the way fire is supposed to be—and Mab was gone.
The full short story "Christmas Eve" is still free on Butcher's website.

EDIT
For those who dont recognize it, yes, thats the Disney movie Frozen Elsa's powers in a ring for roughly 24 hours.

We're not really close with them and don't want to imply too much in any case. Best to keep the dollar value/effort investment low, especially for a first exchange.

Fancy alcohol, Hukapanui topiary, stuff like that.

On the subject of appropriate gifts - we gave Mab a car. Should we make Maeve a motorcycle?
We made Mab an executive automobile as a diplomatic gift at a summit.
It wasnt just a random gift, and it did involve some investment of time and effort. There isnt a commensurate justification to do something like that for Maeve right now.

Plus, we dont know enough about Maeve's tastes even if we wanted to.
For all we know, her tastes run to grand tourers, or two seat sportscars.

It's Maeve, she probably doesn't care as long as the upholstery is long pig skin.

The more we talk about it the more convinced I am that fancy booze is the correct answer. It's novel and classy enough to be acceptable without being overly extravagant or implying anything beyond well wishes.

Paying attention to a person's interests when gift giving is gonna give better results than just going for generic X. No point investing several days in making something that will never get any use.
And while Maeve is no shrinking violet, I suspect that Mengele is probably a little gauche as a decorating option.

But yeah, fancy booze seldom goes wrong as a festive gift.

RATIONALE
Its Christmas. We have Elves.
It would be a crime not to have them build children's gifts for our youngest siblings.

And as someone who has spent a significant amount of time on his feet professionally, I am going to go to bat for exactly how valuable quality footwear is to a blue-collar worker like Michael.
Or indeed, a white collar one who spends a lot of time on his feet.

Especially when you consider that good footwear is also a key tactical advantage for someone like Michael who has to risk his life in melee combat against supernaturals.
Remember that the first Librarian we met literally had enchanted shoes for a reason.

As for Charity, Robot Roombas are the gift of time.

As anyone with experience can tell you, a house sized for a large family can be hell to keep clean, and the Carpenter home has enough space for a family of nine, with space left over. And its not like the Carpenters can afford to have professional cleaners around to do the work, so even with the elder kids doing chores, a lot of it falls on Charity.

Roombas to handle routine cleaning will take some of the drudgery off her hands.
And they exist IRL as of 2006, so Molly can either buy some off the shelf in Sanctuary, or make some with the help of the Elves.

Matthew is actively learning Japanese, and is a fan of Japanese animation and art.
So getting him a popular series in Japanese leans into his personal interests.

And for Daniel, a PS3 is something he can share.
With his girlfriend, with his siblings, with his friends; a multiplayer game and multiple gamepads is often a centerpiece for teen socializing. Also something relatively normal.

Leech has science interests. So science gifts.

If that is your concern you could ask her what kind of conveyance she prefers to move around in. The fey are at times more human than they wish to appear, but they are not that human. Especially true of Maeve, she is very direct

Added rumbas to Charity's gifts ( @DragonParadox are those enspirited machines of the courts, or something we'd be making ourselves?), and more books for Leech.

A rumba is a simple enough thing that you can just ask for blanks and then have Iris to write up manual code for them, she is a little confused as to what one might want with what is objectively a worse cleaning robot, but... organics are weird and she has decided that creator deity or no Molly is more organic than not

Yeah.

But with the fae, we also have to worry about relative status and that kind of thing in gifts.
Easy to start, or stumble into drama by giving gifts that ignore internal Court politics and precedence. Especially if any of the fae involved is the prickly sort.

Probably safer to send her exotic booze, like @BronzeTongue said. Or jewelry.
Save the bigger things for bigger occasions.

We owe Lily something nice, actually.
Her and Fix.
But thats probably next year.
What about a gift for Clippy? Maybe a drone body for her to pilot?
We'll get Clippy a new phone in the new year.
But generally, its hard to get gifts for someone without a body.
Especially when said person already has access to essentially everything you do.

Wasn't there a Decepticon cellphone that could turn into a tiny bipedal robot in one of the first Transformers movies? That seems like an appropriate chassis for Clippy, IMO.

If our Kingdom can make a non iron motorcycle Molly should be able to lift it long enough to transport.

Doing something like that with an item that is phone sized is going to take actual magical crafting, but Molly can do it certainly. I would call that Prodigy 2, though if you want the robot to have bells and whistles you are better off making it a particularly small construct

Does she want a transforming body though?
A home is one thing, a body to pilot around is something else.
Plus, and this is a little selfish, but a transforming body doesnt really help her do her job in any way.

I mean, you might be able to sell me on giving her next chassis the ability to move itself and fly around, in case its forgotten or falls out of Molly's pocket in a fight, or needs to charge itself(assuming we dont stick some undying power source in it). But I dont really see the benefit in making it able to do this:

Yeah but they prob have plenty of Winter themed dresses but you could argue that is the first completely non-ferrous car Mab has ever received.

Would people prefer if I switched over to elven made toys for Amanda, Hope and Harry? on one hand this might be appropriate, but on the other, our courts should also have some good toys. I am not opposed to switching. My hills to die on are Michael and Charity

Also, @DragonParadox are we voting for Amoracchius's gift in one of the next votes, or should I write in now?

I'm thinking something like:

Arctic Absinthe - A spirit fermented from fresh Ascetic's Root and those few lightless plants of the waste that are edible to mortals. When swirled carefully in a glass the otherwise clear liquid almost seems to contain a trapped aurora borealis. Taken by the shot it is almost bitterly cold, most comparable to an invigorating mint though it doesn't quite match any earthly flavor, settling into a spicy heat.

For winter, and this for Summer:

Bright Brandy - Traditionally distilled from the shock-fruit of the near forests, this beverage undergoes a natural form of electrochemical fermentation over a fivefold distilling process. A cloudy white color, as it moves forking yellow streaks form and break apart, giving a false sense of depth. A sweet and tangy taste, it crackles in the mouth and leaves a tingling numbness going down.

Cause the closest thing to sunshine and constant warmth is the ring of lightning.

Would people prefer if I
I kind of agree with Uju about not getting people stuff for work for Christmas. The boots and socks are more general at least and I think its too stereotypical to get workshop tools for your dad. At least one of the other siblings are prob gonna do the same thing.
