Dungeons and Dragons Megathread

Vigilante's pretty much designed for social-sneaky-fighty hybrid. Go one of the magic using archetypes and you can toss in some spell omph, and it's impossible to make a vigilante who can't go covert- it's a class feature!

Heh, seen it. She's decided that this setting's version of the drow is less that and more Undertale meets Game of Thrones though, and I'm inclined to roll with it.

Also, the artificer just took the Brew Potion feat, and is excited to use the blood and organs of that troll they killed (I improvised some market value for them as potion ingredients without thinking I'd ever have to go into detail). It seems sensible enough that troll blood would be useful for healing potions though, so once they get back to civilization that's what he's going to make.

I haven't yet told him the exact formula for trollsblood healing potions. When he makes them, I'm going to narrate the process step by step.

1. Distill troll blood into powder over a live fire, inside the shell of a freshly split coconut.

2. Crush half a dozen limes and mix their pulp with three drops of water from a holy spring.

3. Put the lime in the coconut.

4. Drink them both together.

And wheeew, I am finally in a third game, after lotsa trying. This last one, I missed the cutoff of 5 players of the applicants, then one didn't finish their sheet, and stepped in.

So, Qinggong Monk, in!

My catfolk-vigilante game, much of the rest of the group is holding out that it'll happen, but the first DM is obviously a flak, and we've yet to get a second, so my belief is it's DOA.

Which is a shame, because I really liked that character.

Something I noticed in the Sword Coast's Adventurer's Guide: Page 150, starting equipment for Inheritor background. Either some words are missing in the "proficient with" section, or... well, fuck me Inheritor can be so broken with start-gear.

This bit?
Skill Proficiencies: Survival, plus one from among Arcana, History, and Religion.
Tool Proficiencies: Your choice of a gaming set or a musical instrument.
Languages: Any one of your choice.
Equipment: Your inheritance, a set of traveler's clothes, any items with which you are proficient, and a pouch containing 15gp.
I'm pretty sure that's meant as an apology for your PC becoming the DM's punching bag.
Since this background can potentially railroad you into inheriting Castle Oh-God-why-are-there-so-many-ghosts-and-demons and the duty of clearing said castle of monsters(including the heretical Vampire/Lich hybrid that may or may not be your ancestor).

Being slightly more serious: I imagine what it's supposed to mean by "item" is "Tool / Instrument", and by "Tool / Instrument" ones from the PHB page for things like Artisan Tools and Herbalism Kits and whatnot. In practice it's just, well... they didn't release an Errata, and being D&D if you give players an inch with rules-as-written...

In all seriousness, by the book, a player could take proficiency in Apparatus of Kwalish or (worse) Mighty Servant of Leuk-O.

Which is why I specified that table in the PHB specifically. I think it was a case of Wizards having a slight brain fart and forgetting why all their other backgrounds are more specific.

So when I'm not being an asshole about low art, I spend my time working on Elfgame material. One of the things I've been fiddling with is a stripped down Pathfinder using only rules they've released and some basic houserules. The aim is to make the game more accessible, while sneaking in stealth buffs and updates.

While doing that, I've been kicking around a pregenerated character idea I got from Double Cross and Apocalypse World: playbooks. You would have a pregenerated character with some fluff and a basic, on rails advancement path. But then, you could go to the advanced playbook, pick a character type, and get under the hood with options from a much smaller list than "fucking everything". Feats, stat arrays, spell choices and what have you would be in the playbook, with handy references to what the fiddly bits do.

This would allow for faster character generation, easier reference of the myriad abilities characters have, and surreptitious addition of basic optimization tricks to those who do not have a lust for rag picking.
I could see how some people would want this, but uhm, anyone who cares enough to post in this thread? Has probably already designed dozens more characters than has played, and thinks dollcrafting is fun.

Yeah, but sometimes a ninja doesn't have the time to go diving for splatbooks. The secondary purpose of the exercise would be to streamline the design and play process by having the generically best options selectable, then provide a reference sheet to abilities in back, like 4e power cards.

'Cause if you tell me you've never blanked on a spell interaction or had to go hunting for a wildshape form or needed to show your MC what your shit can do, then I'll tell you you're a liar. :V

It's been several years since I played anything that had spells. :p I'm the dude who is always pushing AMS.

Though yeah, i did institute a "have the stats for your minion creatures at the table or i throw them offscreen" rule as a DM. Totally fine with spell look ups though.

Character concept- A Kitsune Barbarian assassin.

Using the Kitsune's natural shapeshifting and the Realistic Likeness feat (! One of the best race feats period) & tail spells, get in close to a target, then use rage powers + natural attacks to rip 'em apart. No weapons, just claw and teeth.
