Whenever i see a setting that tries to limit the amount of augments you can get and tie it to a stat i wonder why they don't make the stat function more like XP and less like a non-renewable pool.

On the 'what is a deck' conversation: Ever seen Terminator 2? That thing that lil'John Connor used to steal money out of an ATM? That's basically an early version of what would evolve (in '80s-derived Cyberpunk) into a Deck.

This scene:

It's just an early (early!) notebook computer, but the fashion in which he uses it - in a bag with a dozen different connectors necessary to link to target systems, surreptitiously when no-one's looking, hacking into a system and making it do what he wants - it's basically an early Deck. Only proper Decks are generally custom-built for and by the user and able to stop a bullet.

There's actually some logic behind how you'd want your deck to be in a game.

The first thing a baddie does is shoot the deck when you're on a mission, so make sure it's armored for a few hits.

As long as it's armored, make it big enough to use as a shield in a REALLY bad situation.

Now that's it's bigger anyways, install a hidden hold-out weapon, and make use of the extra space to install more goodies for hacking stuff.

.......what? :p At the VERY least, you can use a deck like that as a bludgeon weapon. And it gives you an excuse to put some STR on your otherwise pencil-limbed geek.

I'm liking this mostly as a counterpoint to the latest Deus Ex flavour of Cyberpunk. HR and MD are just way to damn straight laced and dour for my taste, too normal. When I walk through a city in a cyberpunk game I want there to be just as many freaks on the street as there are pigeons.

No dwarves and wizards though, I guess I'm kind of hung up on Shadowrun but it's like eating jam without the peanut butter for me.

I'm doing that for my story.

Well, it's less dwarves and wizards, and more gods, anthropomorphic personifications of capitalism, mythical creatures and wizards, but the idea's the same.

Hopefully the game will have Witcher style choices matter(Even if it is only a clever illusion) The tabletop version had some gotchas that left a sour taste in my mouth, such as the Firestorm corp war
books.

Big annoying one was where the PCs were infiltrating an Arasaka base to get a very important database and were cut off from outsidec ontact. They get tot hat mainframe and find out that the CEO of Arasaka had also digitized his rebelous son who was against Arasaka. The PCs were faced with a choice, database or CEO son, there was only room for one. This led to the gotcha sidebar if they went for the database where they *gasp* found out it could only be unlocked by the Son's AI and had to go back in there to get him.

One of the Level Developers has revealed that you will not be able to control flying cars.

GC: Was it implied you'd be able to drive flying cars as well?
MP: You won't be able to control flying cars but they will be used for missions for crucial things. But the main way to get through will be on foot, cars, and bikes.

You can read the full interview here.

I mean that actually is a good thing in my book. Flying that feels good is hard. I already have enough questions if they can make cars and walking feel good. They don't exactly have a great track record on movement that feels good.

CDPR seems to be having issues with bad PR statements. Folks are accusing them of transphobia, and at a minimum, it's not a good look. It's obvious why this could be seen as offensive.

I remember a couple of weeks ago their GOG PR account made a pro-Gamergate statement (I think in regards to Postal 2), which was quickly backtracked. Their PR department needs some work, this blew up in some of my friends circles just now and some are reconsidering purchase of the game.

Yeah, that really put a sour taste in my mouth. I don't think it's enough to make me want to not buy it but I'll certainly be thinking about it...

A friend of mine who lives in Poland (and is a huge fan of CDPR) isn't too surprised (but dismayed) that they made a joke like this because of how these issues are addressed (or more precisely, not at all) in Polish society, so... there's that too, I guess...

I really hope this is just a PR gaffe and doesn't imply that the game itself will have elements in a similar... unsavory vein.

Disappointing. I do distinctly remember The Witcher 3 making it a point to show that homophobia is bad (the early parts of the Griffin hunt with the gay hunter come to mind), but considering it's very possible to be nominally friendly to gay people and still exclude trans people due to transphobia...

This also kinda links back to the "An altered body is Profane" topic, and them not getting Cyberpunk as a genre. If you're making a game in a genre that is about marginalized communities, and about bodily autonomy, you shouldn't make a joke at the expense of a community of people who are marginalized for their bodiliy autonomy today! Unless you don't actually make such a game - in which case it's not really a cyberpunk game, but just a near-future game with cool augmentations.

Like, my hope here is that since this game is still in development and CDPR has an increasing number of Western employees who might be sensitive to these issues, they will have enough time to realize that this sort of thing is kinda of a big deal for a lot of people and treat this topic with more sensitivity. Especially since they have had awareness of such issues in the past and made changes to their games accordingly.

But this is a hope, not something I'm actually expecting to happen. Because we're still in game dev territory.

I'm pretty worried because it's not just a transphobic joke. Or how or if the game deals with issues of gender.
It's also very much about how the game treats bodily autonomy - and at this point I'm almost certain I won't get what I am hoping for.

I've already elaborated in this thread what I'm hoping for - a body-positive portrayal of body-alteration. Saying that it's fine to change your body. Which IMO is very compatible with the Punk-part of Cyberpunk, because you can contrast that so wel with putting all the negative effects of the body alteration onto it being mandated by society and corporate demands.
But if you're making jokes about people who alter their bodies to be more comfortable with them - well, then your game probably isn't going to portray body-alteration in a positive manner ever, other than as a power-fantasy to give you more killing power. And fuck that I don't want that game.

Yeah, I'm getting increasingly worried that counting on a Polish game developer to successfully tackle this fundamentally leftist and transgressive genre was kind of a bad bet.

I mean, not to say that there are no left wing people sensitive to these issues in Poland. But Witcher 3 was only really progressive by the standards of Medieval Fantasy and the project is being subsidized by the Polish government.

Maybe Harebrained Schemes with cook up a new Shadowrun game? Please?

The tweet has been deleted I think. What did it say exactly?
I don't really care. I'm getting that game.
People should care about you because???
