[X] Enetious
There's just the rest of today, and tomorrow, you think to yourself as you walk, mind on autopilot, into the cafeteria as the lunch bell rings. And the day after tomorrow is Sunday.
"It's that super-witch, right?" Sayaka's question - wait, Sayaka is initiating conversation with you? - catches you and grabs your immediate attention. "That's what's got you walking around looking like a zombie all day, isn't it?" You nod your head as you sit down beside Madoka, still too stunned by Sayaka's engagement to really have anything to say to her. "Kyouko told me yesterday that it's got you pretty down. I, uh... After what you said the other day, I guess I can see why."
Eventually, your brain settles on the thing least likely to set Sayaka off. "Yeah."
"I guess my whole tantrum thing's really not making things any easier on you," Sayaka says, rubbing the back of her head. "Listen, Homura, I... I'm still kinda mad at you for keeping something this big from us, but I..." Is this progress you hear? No; Sayaka shakes her head, and says "Never mind. Just, come back alive on Sunday. That's about all I can really say to you right now."
"Did Sakura-san say something to you yesterday?" asks Hitomi.
"Kinda. She called me up during some team thing she was doing yesterday to see how I was doing, and I guess I went a little overboard on her about this whole thing. She said-" Sayaka adopts her best impression of the redhead to say "Don't ya think yer being too hard on Spooky?" While Sayaka's impression of Kyouko has improved noticeably, she stops after just the one sentence, before returning to her normal voice. "Basically, she said had every right to be mad at Homura for keeping something like that a secret from me, but I shouldn't be so hard on her for it 'cause, after Sunday, I might not have a chance to say I'm sorry by the time I'm no longer mad at her."
"I see," you say. You won't tempt Fate by asking if this makes you and Sayaka friends again, but you will ask her "The other girls and I are hosting a little get-together tomorrow night at Tomoe-san's apartment. I take it this new development means you'll be attending as Kyouko's plus one?"
"Maybe? She didn't say anything about a party to me yesterday; maybe it just slipped her mind."
"What about me, Homura-chan?" Madoka asks, clinging to your arm, forcing you to open your lunch with only the unencumbered other arm. "Am I invited?"
"Of course," you reply. Looking over to Hitomi, you add "All of you are invited, actually, if you want to go." Because it might be the last time you ever see any of them.
Hitomi nods, and asks "Ah, don't you think it's a bit... Improper, to be hosting a party the night before something like that? Aren't you all worried that you could have spent the time preparing instead?"
"We're doing everything we can to prepare," you say. "In fact, we decided to have this because none of us wanted to go into battle Sunday feeling any more stressed out than we need to."
"I see," Hitomi says. "In that case, whether I'm able to join you will depend on if my parents will allow me to. I'm sure they'll be watching the evening news, and they may not wish for me to leave if it looks like a severe tropical storm is coming."
"Of course." You hope Hitomi can make it. You hope the improving relationships between you and your friends will be able to continue tomorrow night. You hope tomorrow night won't be the last time you see any of them in this timeline. Again, with Hitomi you won't try to push your luck and tempt Fate, so rather than ask what you really want to, you ask "You know, I've heard that our school was rebuilt a few years ago; do you happen to know what it looked like before?"
Hitomi nods, saying "Yes, as a matter of fact. When I was a little girl, I remember the school was much more conservatively designed than it is now." Hitomi takes out her phone, and shows you a picture of the school from around ten years ago. It's a digital scan of a newspaper article, captioned "Mitakihara Junior High building condemned, to be torn down later this year." The school in the picture is a brick-and-wood building that looks like it was built in the first half of the last century. The building looks to be in quite dire straits, and after seeing the state the old building was in, you suddenly understand why it was rebuilt. "I was just a little girl, but I remember thinking how pretty the new building looked when it was finally finished."
"Didn't the city get some famous European guy to design it?"
"Yes," Hitomi says to Sayaka. "It was an Austrian architect, I believe, but for the life of me I can't seem to remember their name."
"Hey," Kirika says as she sits down beside you. You scoot over to give her move room, slyly taking the opportunity to move in close to Madoka as you do so. "What's up?"
"Not much," you say. "I do have one piece of good news, though- I spoke with Nurse Ortensia earlier today about her dinner with Mikuni Oriko, and I was able to get her word that she wouldn't try anything tonight." Granted, you have no idea how far you can trust her word, but you can hope. You can be wrong, too. "Have you heard from Mikuni Oriko at all about the message I sent her earlier today?"
"That's good," Kirika says. "And yes, actually I have. First, Oriko wants to apologise, 'cause she hasn't been able to get back to you yet; and second, she says she's already been working on something like what you suggested for awhile now. I don't know what it is, 'cause she didn't tell me; all I know is that she said she'd be happy to work on it more with you later tonight."
"I assume she'll be contacting me?"
Kirika nods. "Yeah. I'm just hoping everything goes well for her. Nurse O's... Not exactly a nice person, is she? I mean, I know Oriko wants to get to know her, but there's just something about her that's so... Off, you know?"
You've known how 'off' Nurse Ortensia is for awhile now, considering you have to see her every day in order to keep up appearances. "Yeah. I hope we can trust her," you say, before deciding to change the topic. "I want to thank you for last night. I had a lot of fun playing all those games with you."
"Hey, no problem," Kirika says. "You're good to Oriko, and Archer's good to my mom. As long as things stay that way, I'll be good to you too." She drapes an arm over your shoulder, an act which earns a jealous pout from Madoka. "You know, you can come over any time you'd like. Doesn't just have to be when we're having family dinner; and if you do, we can play a lot more games together."
"I think I'd like that," you say. "You've got an impressive library, and every one of your games is a hundred times better than the shooter at the arcade."
"Like I said, videogames have been getting a lot better lately, and-" Kirika stops herself, adding "You know what? I'd better let you go before Pinkie gnaws my arm off," before removing her arm from your shoulder. "Sorry. I'll keep quiet and let your girlfriend monopolise you."
You nod, and turn to face Madoka. Even when she's jealous, she can't help but look adorable. "Sorry," she says, hanging her head. "I know you and Kirika-chan are just being friendly, but I can't help but feel a little jealous, you know? You spend so much time with the others, even though I'm your girlfriend, and I-"
Madoka doesn't get to finish her sentence, because your arms wrapping her in a hug interrupts her. "I know," you say. "Even though we only went on a date a few days ago, I know it must be hard for you to accept that I see the rest of my team more than you." You smile for Madoka, adding "But I'm doing it because of you, Madoka. I'm doing everything I can now to make sure you're safe tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and all the days after that, too." You reach down the collar of your shirt, until you produce your half of the necklace you bought. "But even if I'm too busy to see you, just remember that we'll never be apart."
Madoka nods, wordlessly mimicking your motions as she mates her half of the necklace with yours. "Yeah," she says.
"Now, since you seem so jealous for my attention, what do you want to talk about?" you ask. "Is there some gossip about our teachers you'd like to share with me? Something about poor Saotome-sensei's relationship troubles, perhaps?"
"Well, I did hear something about the biology teacher for the third years," On your other side, you see Kirika leaning in rather conspicuously, and Madoka's eyes dart across the cafeteria, as if to make sure no one were listening in on your scandalous conversation, before she says in a hushed tone "I heard he..."
