Though Mami's apartment was only a half-hour's walk away from her own place, Sayaka was glad to have left when she did. Had she left any later the sun would have fully vanished beneath the horizon well before she arrived home. With how dangerous Mitakihara had become recently, and the fact that she had someone very important walking beside her, she was glad to have left just in time to make it home with still a little daylight left to spare.
It didn't have anything to do with that stupid brat Kyouko; nope, not one bit.
Sayaka was
done thinking about her. She was
done thinking about Kyouko's smile, and how kissable her lips looked, and how it made her heart skip a beat whenever she'd flash that cute little fang of hers; she was
done thinking about her eyes, pools of cherry that had captivated the bluenette's imagination ever since her own sapphire ones had first met Kyouko's on the dance machine; she was
done thinking about Kyouko's toned body, sculpted from years of active life as a
puella magi, a body that the redhead was all too eager to show off, and that Sayaka was all too eager to drink in the sight of; she was
done thinking about Kyouko's long, luscious crimson locks, so soft she almost wanted to wear the other girl's hair like a scarf,
or see it sprawled out beneath her as we... Wait, what? Where did that come from?
Like Sayaka said, she was
done thinking about Sakura Kyouko.
"Sayaka-chan, what did Kyouko-chan say to you that got you so upset?" It was just too bad that Madoka didn't believe her.
Sayaka sighed, saying "It's nothing, okay? I just... I wanted to get home before it got dark, is all. Mitakihara's not as safe as we used to think it was, and..."
"And you were worried about me?"
"Yeah." Sayaka gave her friend a smile. "Besides, Homura'd have my head if something happened to you that having us walk home together could have prevented."
"You're exaggerating, Sayaka-chan," Madoka's response came on the heels of laughter.
That's right... She hasn't seen that other side of Homura yet. "She'd be mad at you, but I'm sure that Homura-chan wouldn't go that far if something happened to me."
Sakaya could still picture that scene in her mind, the images haunting her nightmares. That girl dressed in white and that armoured woman Homura had later called "Lancer"; they had just appeared completely out of nowhere, gunning for her.
"Miki-san, get to safety, now!" In a flash, Mami-san revealed her true nature to Sayaka and fought back, calling a shirtless man in gold - "Caster" - to her side to deal with Lancer, while she fought the girl in white.
Their exact movements had been a blur to Sayaka, but what she remembered clearly was the scream that split the air as Lancer was shot clear through a nearby building, and the gunshot that rang out only seconds later that sent the girl in white to the ground in a pool of her own blood. Sayaka had known that Homura and Archer had to fight off magical threats ever since the Sunday of Homura's first date with Madoka, but that had been the first time she had ever seen
how they fought.
"I'm not going to let you do this, Homura."
"Miki Sayaka, I need for you to stand down, right now."
She had seen another side of Homura that day. Sayaka had seen for herself just how kind, caring, and sensitive Homura could be when she wanted to, but that image was tempered now by the knowledge of the other side of Madoka's new girlfriend; that of a ruthless machine who would stop at nothing to keep safe the people she cared about.
Yet, it wasn't Homura's willingness to kill to keep her friends safe that scared Sayaka the most. No, what scared her the most was that, despite having seen firsthand what the life of a
puella magi was like there was still a part of her that knew, if push came to shove and it was the only way to save her friends, she'd be willing to take up the mantle and fight for the people closest to her.
No matter the cost.
But, Madoka didn't need to know all the gory details of what had happened that day. She didn't need to know the lengths to which Homura would go to keep her safe. So Sayaka smiled, responding to Madoka's statement "Yeah. I'm sure you're right, Madoka. I'm just being silly." She leaned in to tousle the shorter girl's hair, adding "You know, you've got a really good thing going with Homura. I hope the two of you are able to stay happy together for a really long time."
"What about you, Sayaka-chan?" Madoka asked. "I know you're probably still disappointed about being turned down by Kamijou-kun, but don't you want to find someone who makes you happy too?"
All her life, when Sayaka had closed her eyes and tried to imagine herself with a partner, it had been Kamijou Kyousuke who had filled the role in her imagination. Only recently had that image changed, but the person that she imagined by her side now was the
last person that Miki Sayaka wanted to be with. She was rude, abrasive, obnoxious, violent, and callous; to say nothing of the fact that they were both girls.
Far and away the most important issue to consider if they were to become partners was their complete lack of compatibility. She knew that Kyouko wouldn't have a problem with another girl, but Sayaka was straight. She
knew that she was straight. Ten years of longing for Kamijou Kyousuke had solidified in Sayaka's mind that she was straight.
So why did she have to work so hard to remind herself that she was straight?
Sayaka shrugged off Madoka's question, casually remarking "Ah, well, if it happens, it happens. There's just no guy in my life right now that I'm all that attracted to. I mean, Saotome-sensei has Nakazawa pretty well locked down, and none of the other boys in our class are anything really special. It's fine, really Madoka; I'm in no rush. I'm sure I can wait for the right guy to come around."
"That's really smart of you, Sayaka-chan. I was really lucky to find Homura-chan so quickly, but I know that the right person doesn't always fall into your lap immediately."
The sun was just dipping below the horizon by the time the pair reached Sayaka's building. It had been a really fancy hotel a long time ago, but once the modernization began thirty years ago it had been converted into upscale apartments for Mitakihara's growing upper-middle class. They weren't
rich in the same way that Madoka's mom was rich, but Sayaka's parents had enough money behind them to make sure they had a decent place to live.
True, Madoka could just take the next right and continue all the way to her house, but "You wanna spend the night?" Sayaka asked. "I'm sure my mom won't mind, and maybe it'd stick a bit more if we both studied together."
That was all the invitation Madoka needed, and her smile was all the reassurance Sayaka needed to know that she had done the right thing.
