Er, @SVS the two votes are identical, with only one of them being complete with the [X] Wat do?

Yours and Twix are identical, but Akumura and ITry are missing the practice session at the end. It's a difference of "There's maybe enough for me to squeeze an extra post out of this" versus "I'll just tack the additions on to the previous vote" .

Huh, I was under the impression that '[X] Wat do?' votes were mandatory in order to progress the plot. Guess we'll have to wait on someone to vote/change their vote then. Also, those two differing votes were what I was referring to in my post, though if '[X] Wat do?' votes aren't mandatory then I can see the problem with it.

Pinging @itrytofight and @Akumura just in case

Going to take wanderingtwix's side on this so please disregard my earlier vote:

[X] "Of course. I'm glad that's something we can agree on."
-[X] "If there's anything I can do to make it up to you, let me know."
-[X] "If you'd like, I can have Archer make you dinner as compensation."
[X] What are your thoughts about the flier?
-[X] The Church appears to be yet another anomaly in this timeline, that might warrant investigation. With all the powers you have seen at play recently, it is imperative to exercise caution here, until more information has been obtained.
[X] Practice projection magic. Ask Archer if there's any way to cut down on energy costs or to make her projections more detailed than what she's been projecting thus far.

I wonder, how would Gae Dearg fare against the Labyrinth itself?

-[X] With Madoka if possible. Her presence probably would help you focus on projecting. Not because-well, not only because you just want to spend more time with her or anything...

Come to think of it, the reason why we are trying to use projections is because Homura needs magic weapons now, right? Wasn't Homura canonically already proficient in using bolts of magic for attacking?

Wouldn't work unless it got stabbed in the Witch's core or something like that, as it needs to cut off the source to get rid of the Labyrinth. Rule Breaker would work in the way you're thinking of, though SVS restricted its use due to obvious reasons (like stealing all the Servants, or trivializing Witch encounters).

And yeah, you're right, Homura was shooting at Kyuubey with magic bolts early on in Madoka Magica. Maybe she can't use a larger-scale version of that attack without a severe/wasteful mana drain? I doubt the size we see in the anime will have much affect on a Witch, and guns work just fine on familiars still.

From the wiki, "Bounded Fields, such as Invisible Air, will have small fissures created that slowly chip away at them with each strike(of Gae Dearg)"
Perhaps we could have Archer crack it open from the outside, possibly making the subsequent fight significantly easier

Problem with this is that we don't know if Labyrinths and Bounded Fields are entirely the same thing, as they're made with Kyuubey-magic. Also, Archer sucks at all forms of Magecraft other than his own personal one, so trying to crack it open with Magecraft would be largely ineffective. Though don't forget, Caster may have a trinket or two that may aid in collapsing Assassin's Labyrinth. As for brute forcing the Labyrinth, not sure if its even possible with Labyrinths, that would be up to SVS to decide whether a sufficient amount of power can break it or if you need something like an Anti-World NP such as Ea to collapse it.

As in, slapping the Labyrinth a couple of times from the outside with a Gae Dearg seems like a relatively low-risk high reward option that has a decent chance of working to, at least, greatly weaken Assassin. Also we gain info that we could potentially use in the future

Hm, assuming they can prevent Assassin's Labyrinth from moving, via a reality anchor or something like it a la Gate of Babylon, if they constantly disrupt the Labyrinth by doing as you said, its entirely possible that it'll work.

You would be right the vast majority of the time. But in this one specific instance, we're close enough to the end of the day that, if enough people hadn't wanted to have a practice session I'd have been perfectly fine with ending the day just by editing the previous post with the current vote.

Maybe I'm just over complicating things for myself, especially since "having a practice session" now has the majority vote.

I can explain! You see... I forgot that was a thing. She only used it once, in a scene that lasted maybe under five minutes, in the first episode, and then never shows up again in any form. I forgot about it, you all forgot about it until just now, and I'm pretty sure that the production staff also forgot about it. I'm going to say that it's probably best if we continue to forget about it.

Problem with this is that we don't know if Labyrinths and Bounded Fields are entirely the same thing, as they're made with Kyuubey-magic.

The Reality Marble/Labyrinth question is one that's been bothering me since I started this. Mechanically speaking, the two are identical in that both are the result of projecting one's inner world onto the real world. However, problems arise when we try to talk origins. I had originally wanted to say that the two were in fact the same thing described under two separate systems, but I ran into some problems when I did some deeper digging.
The concept of a Reality Marble (固有結界, Koyū Kekkai?, Innate Bounded Field) is one that centres around the materialization and projection of one's inner world onto reality following the Thaumaturgical Theory World Egg (世界卵, Sekai Tamago?).[1] Originally, it was an ability that daemons have as their Alien Common Sense (異界常識, Ikai Jōshiki?)
The Sixth Imaginary Factor (第六架空要素, Dairoku Kakū Yōso?), also known as Daemons, is a force that reacts to the desires of humans for a wish. It needs a form, invented by humans, similarly to how it happens to higher-level spirits, in order to materialize itself, as a passive existence.
But regardless of the result, as a rule, daemons are gentle. They are the Imaginary Factor that understands one's pain and attempts to remove it. Depending on perspective, one can say that they are allies to humans. They use Reality Marbles as the Alien Common Sense.

Namely that third postulate about daemons being allies to humans. No matter how I tried to twist the application of the second postulate regarding the statement on "the desires of humans for a wish" I couldn't work my way around witches being allies to humans. I could even almost twist the "understands one's pain and attempts to remove it" part of the third postulate as being described from the witch's perspective, but even then I couldn't get around the "allies to humans" part.

So, ultimately I decided that it would be best to consider the two to be, let's call it, a case of magical convergent evolution. In other words, Reality Marbles and Labyrinths are two different things that just happen to look the same.

I can explain! You see... I forgot that was a thing. She only used it once, in a scene that lasted maybe under five minutes, in the first episode, and then never shows up again in any form. What about her forcefield thing we also see in ep. 1? Can we still use those? Or her apparent ability to enchant and manipulate objects she is in contact with? Both are also directly combat-applicable magical abilities she has been shown to have.

What about her forcefield thing we also see in ep. 1? Can we still use those? Or her apparent ability to enchant and manipulate objects she is in contact with? Both are also directly combat-applicable magical abilities she has been shown to have.

The way I see it, it's less "enchanting" the object in contact and more "pour mana into it in order to manipulate it", which is something I think is inherent to all magical girls, being that it's how they're able to create their weapons and battle costumes (with the objects they're pouring mana into being a metaphysical vessel in the shape of what's in their mind, rather than a physical object), and is also how Homura is able to bring others with her into timestop (she's pouring mana into them in order to extend what the timestop considers to be "her"). So yes, we can still do that neat trick of autopiloting an oil tanker and driving it into Whataburger's face if we want to.

As for the forcefield, if I had to guess I'd say that it's Homura doing the same as above, but instead using it to extend the protective range of her shield. It would fall under the category of "modification" similar to Mami's ribbons being modified into muskets, Kyouko's spear-chain-whip, or the concept art of Sayaka's sword where it can turn into a razor whip or a launcher for exploding sword blades. Homura just couldn't create a different weapon until Archer taught her how to use Projection on a greater scale than the small, instinctual level given to all magical girls in this quest.

Day 18 Chapter 17
[X] What are your thoughts about the flier?
-[X] The Church appears to be yet another anomaly in this timeline, that might warrant investigation. With all the powers you have seen at play recently, it is imperative to exercise caution here, until more information has been obtained.
[X] Practice projection magic. Ask Archer if there's any way to cut down on energy costs or to make her projections more detailed than what she's been projecting thus far.

"The Church of the Righteous Sister..." Your voice trails off as you examine the flyer Archer has handed to you. It's black and white and devoid of graphics, save for a red sunburst laid over a cross, with the only print being the call to join the church, but with no given address. "Well, that's a new one. How do they expect to attract members if they won't even say where their place of worship is located?"

Archer shrugs, saying "I found that while I was out trailing McRemitz earlier today. I'd never heard of them, and on the off chance they weren't just a bunch of ineffectual loonies I thought you might want to know about it."

"I'm glad that you did. This church isn't something I've ever been aware of in this city before. With everything else that's currently at work in this city, exercising caution is imperative. We'll have to see if we can find out more about them when we have the chance."

You let the flyer fall from your hands and on to the waiting table of your living room. Your tan uniform jacket, draped over the seat of an unused couch, is soon to join it, and your red uniform bow follows after. You make your way to the kitchen for a glass of water, and upon your return you set about to further practice your Projections.

With an utterance of Archer's "Trace on" you Project your bow. As the lines of mana follow the path lain out for them by the circuitry of your soul, you carefully study the way in which your bow forms in your hand. "Would it be possible, somehow, to lower the mana cost to Project this?" you ask, giving the weapon an experimental heft as its form completes in your hand. It is as it should be.

"It should be," Archer replies, studying your handiwork, ensuring that your current attempt is up or surpassing your previous standards. "Practice does make perfect, after all. You've certainly got that part down well enough."

"What about making it more detailed?"

"More detailed than what?" Archer asks, handing the weapon back to you. "You've already got a perfectly detailed bow right here, unless you mean that you want to get it closer to the original practice bow I gave you."

"Would that be better than what I have currently?"

"I can't say. This is a pretty far cry from the one I had you practicing with, but structurally there's nothing wrong with it. Actually, I think this is more impressive from a technical perspective. You didn't just replicate an existing weapon that you had seen and practiced with, you envisioned a wholly original weapon and created it from nothing more than the image in your mind. To me, at least, that's a lot more impressive."

Archer takes his seat beside you, continuing to look over your weapon with a careful eye. "Though, if you'd let me ask, I am a little curious where you got the image for this bow in the first place." His finger traces the outline of one of the amethyst jewels embedded in the handguard. "The design is very similar to that other bow I see you sometimes practicing with, the rosewood one. Is there a connection between the two?"

You nod. "... The rosewood bow came first. Actually, it was the first time I had ever seen a bow... When I tried to do what you told me, and Project my practice bow based on the image in my mind, the details of that bow kept intruding onto the image in my mind. This was the result... A weapon that exists solely for me, and no one else."

"I see. And, just to confirm my suspicions, is the rosewood bow..."

"Yes... Once, long ago, it belonged to her."

"I understand," Archer says, wrapping an arm around your shoulder. "I can't stop you from shouldering that burden, if you feel you have to. But just remember, you don't have to shoulder it alone."

"You've gotten a lot better at doing that than when we first met, and I'm proud to see how much you've grown in just the past few weeks. You've got people you can rely on, good people. Don't be afraid to ask them for help once in awhile if you're feeling overwhelmed." Archer releases your shoulder and gives you a firm pat on the back, before standing. "I'll be around if you need my help with anything. In the mean time, just keep practicing, and eventually it'll click for you what you can do to see the same results for less mana."

Archer leaves you alone to your thoughts. But, as long as you have thoughts of Madoka, you are not alone. You call up your Soul Gem, placing it on the table as you set your bow aside. With a watchful eye you gauge the amount of corruption floating in your soul, keeping the level at which the black liquid mass sits under careful inspection as you Project another bow. You study the change in volume from before, and attempt to repeat the process using less mana this time.

You'll be at this for awhile, but that's fine. You have all night to get this right.

Alright, that's a wrap for Day 18. Over the weekend I'm going to be out of town for my cousin's wedding, and while I will be around to answer questions I make no guarantee that I'll be able to put anything substantial out. Additionally, the next week is going to be pretty iffy for me in terms of being able to put large-scale story posts out, so I won't be starting day 19 until some time on Monday the 25th.

However, I still plan on putting out content when I'm able to, so from Monday the 18th through Sunday the 24th, I plan on putting out an omake a day. Leave your suggestions for which characters you want to see in the comments below, or stay silent and be surprised; it's your choice.

Character Suggestions:
  • F/SN cast and what they're doing in the world now
  • The Incubator trying to figure out all of this Moonlit World nonsense
  • Assassin and Reika
  • Kaede
  • Archer Prime (aka the first instance of Archer summoned in this timeline who's still hanging around somewhere with Rin)
  • Lancer Prime (Cu, who's under Caren's control at the end of Hollow Ataraxia)

Omake, side Sayaka - Her Inner Monologue
Though Mami's apartment was only a half-hour's walk away from her own place, Sayaka was glad to have left when she did. Had she left any later the sun would have fully vanished beneath the horizon well before she arrived home. With how dangerous Mitakihara had become recently, and the fact that she had someone very important walking beside her, she was glad to have left just in time to make it home with still a little daylight left to spare.

It didn't have anything to do with that stupid brat Kyouko; nope, not one bit.

Sayaka was done thinking about her. She was done thinking about Kyouko's smile, and how kissable her lips looked, and how it made her heart skip a beat whenever she'd flash that cute little fang of hers; she was done thinking about her eyes, pools of cherry that had captivated the bluenette's imagination ever since her own sapphire ones had first met Kyouko's on the dance machine; she was done thinking about Kyouko's toned body, sculpted from years of active life as a puella magi, a body that the redhead was all too eager to show off, and that Sayaka was all too eager to drink in the sight of; she was done thinking about Kyouko's long, luscious crimson locks, so soft she almost wanted to wear the other girl's hair like a scarf, or see it sprawled out beneath her as we... Wait, what? Where did that come from?

Like Sayaka said, she was done thinking about Sakura Kyouko.

"Sayaka-chan, what did Kyouko-chan say to you that got you so upset?" It was just too bad that Madoka didn't believe her.

Sayaka sighed, saying "It's nothing, okay? I just... I wanted to get home before it got dark, is all. Mitakihara's not as safe as we used to think it was, and..."

"And you were worried about me?"

"Yeah." Sayaka gave her friend a smile. "Besides, Homura'd have my head if something happened to you that having us walk home together could have prevented."

"You're exaggerating, Sayaka-chan," Madoka's response came on the heels of laughter. That's right... She hasn't seen that other side of Homura yet. "She'd be mad at you, but I'm sure that Homura-chan wouldn't go that far if something happened to me."

Sakaya could still picture that scene in her mind, the images haunting her nightmares. That girl dressed in white and that armoured woman Homura had later called "Lancer"; they had just appeared completely out of nowhere, gunning for her. "Miki-san, get to safety, now!" In a flash, Mami-san revealed her true nature to Sayaka and fought back, calling a shirtless man in gold - "Caster" - to her side to deal with Lancer, while she fought the girl in white.

Their exact movements had been a blur to Sayaka, but what she remembered clearly was the scream that split the air as Lancer was shot clear through a nearby building, and the gunshot that rang out only seconds later that sent the girl in white to the ground in a pool of her own blood. Sayaka had known that Homura and Archer had to fight off magical threats ever since the Sunday of Homura's first date with Madoka, but that had been the first time she had ever seen how they fought.

"I'm not going to let you do this, Homura."

"Miki Sayaka, I need for you to stand down, right now."

She had seen another side of Homura that day. Sayaka had seen for herself just how kind, caring, and sensitive Homura could be when she wanted to, but that image was tempered now by the knowledge of the other side of Madoka's new girlfriend; that of a ruthless machine who would stop at nothing to keep safe the people she cared about.

Yet, it wasn't Homura's willingness to kill to keep her friends safe that scared Sayaka the most. No, what scared her the most was that, despite having seen firsthand what the life of a puella magi was like there was still a part of her that knew, if push came to shove and it was the only way to save her friends, she'd be willing to take up the mantle and fight for the people closest to her.

No matter the cost.

But, Madoka didn't need to know all the gory details of what had happened that day. She didn't need to know the lengths to which Homura would go to keep her safe. So Sayaka smiled, responding to Madoka's statement "Yeah. I'm sure you're right, Madoka. I'm just being silly." She leaned in to tousle the shorter girl's hair, adding "You know, you've got a really good thing going with Homura. I hope the two of you are able to stay happy together for a really long time."

"What about you, Sayaka-chan?" Madoka asked. "I know you're probably still disappointed about being turned down by Kamijou-kun, but don't you want to find someone who makes you happy too?"

All her life, when Sayaka had closed her eyes and tried to imagine herself with a partner, it had been Kamijou Kyousuke who had filled the role in her imagination. Only recently had that image changed, but the person that she imagined by her side now was the last person that Miki Sayaka wanted to be with. She was rude, abrasive, obnoxious, violent, and callous; to say nothing of the fact that they were both girls.

Far and away the most important issue to consider if they were to become partners was their complete lack of compatibility. She knew that Kyouko wouldn't have a problem with another girl, but Sayaka was straight. She knew that she was straight. Ten years of longing for Kamijou Kyousuke had solidified in Sayaka's mind that she was straight.

So why did she have to work so hard to remind herself that she was straight?

Sayaka shrugged off Madoka's question, casually remarking "Ah, well, if it happens, it happens. There's just no guy in my life right now that I'm all that attracted to. I mean, Saotome-sensei has Nakazawa pretty well locked down, and none of the other boys in our class are anything really special. It's fine, really Madoka; I'm in no rush. I'm sure I can wait for the right guy to come around."

"That's really smart of you, Sayaka-chan. I was really lucky to find Homura-chan so quickly, but I know that the right person doesn't always fall into your lap immediately."

The sun was just dipping below the horizon by the time the pair reached Sayaka's building. It had been a really fancy hotel a long time ago, but once the modernization began thirty years ago it had been converted into upscale apartments for Mitakihara's growing upper-middle class. They weren't rich in the same way that Madoka's mom was rich, but Sayaka's parents had enough money behind them to make sure they had a decent place to live.

True, Madoka could just take the next right and continue all the way to her house, but "You wanna spend the night?" Sayaka asked. "I'm sure my mom won't mind, and maybe it'd stick a bit more if we both studied together."

That was all the invitation Madoka needed, and her smile was all the reassurance Sayaka needed to know that she had done the right thing.

That was really cool. Its interesting to see in the others' heads. We can usually guess at the broad strokes of what everyone's feeling, but seeing the whole picture is really neat.

Omake, side Assassin - Suppertime
It was a working Saturday like any other, and the time was almost ten at night when one thoroughly average salaryman among many wandered into the dimly lit bar on the upper east side of the city. An electronic chime rang out as he opened the door, and as his eyes scanned over the rows of seated patrons, a certain shapely woman caught his eye. Her long, verdant hair cascaded over her shoulders and down her back, and her plum-coloured eyes sparkled with mischievous intent as she caught him staring at her ample bosom, barely restrained by a top that seemed almost deliberately too small.

Lustful thoughts penetrated the young man's mind, pushed aside in favour of the blessed alcohol he sought after a long day at the office. He pulled up a seat at the counter and ordered the usual. "I see the mystery girl's caught yer eye," the bartender says, sliding over an extra-large filled to the brim with frothy golden nectar. "Smart bet says to stay away from her, though."

"Why?" The first sip of the first beer of the night is always the best, and tonight is no exception.

"Word on the street is she's a real man-eater, and I don't mean that in a good way, if you know what I mean. Maybe things would be different if we could get an answer from her one way or another, but she don't talk much, so..."

"Is she a mute, maybe? How does she order drinks if she doesn't talk?"

"Nah, she can talk some. Got kind of a soft voice, really strange accent. Might be foreign-born, I dunno. Point is, there's some real family-unfriendly rumours about what happens to the guys she walks outta here with, and she ain't saying anything in her defense. I just don't wanna see you get yerself blitzed outta yer mind and do something you'll end up regretting."

That had been a week ago, and yet despite the bartender's warnings, each night the young man's fantasies had been of that mysterious woman. Every night after work, he would see her at the bar, sitting in that same seat; and every night, he would see her leave with a different man hanging from her arm. Her manner of dress was enticing, provocative, and expensive-looking; he often wondered if she was a prostitute, and how much she might charge for a bit of her time.

Tonight was the night, he resolved. As he collected his drink from the bartender, he approached the woman, taking a seat across from her at the table. She looked up at him with those alluring plum-coloured eyes of hers and smiled, and he smiled back.

"So, uh..." The young man was awkward to start. Though currently single, he had had few relationships before, but this was still his first time soliciting from a prostitute and he had no idea where to start. Eventually, he settled on a simple question, "What do you charge?"

Instead of an answer, the woman smiled, lifting a finger to her lips to "shush" the man, before pointing to his drink. <Drink first, then we'll talk,> she said, nursing at her own drink. The bartender was right, she did have a strange accent, and the young man couldn't place what it might be. Still, he did as he was instructed, downing his drink before asking again. This time, however, the young man was met with a response. <Nothing you can't afford, really. But, maybe we can discuss this somewhere more... Private?>

The woman took him by the arm, as she had done for seven other men the past seven nights, and led him somewhere more private. There would be little point in trying to use flowery prose to sugarcoat the events of the hour that followed. There was no romance, no love, no passion; no wholesome sentiments existed to describe their motions. It was sinful and dirty, an act derived from base animal pleasure and nothing else. And when it was over, a single kiss served as the capstone to the night's lust.

That single kiss was all it took to pull the hapless man under Reika's thrall as she had done to all the other unfortunate men that had left with her. As their lips pressed together and she raked her tongue against the insides of his mouth, her mark was embedded where no one could see it. Stripped of his senses, he was little more than a lamb being led to the slaughter. Hand in hand, Reika led her prey out and into the misty night, where the salivating jaws of Assassin waited for him.

He'd never know the difference, of course, though as Reika led the hapless prey into the labyrinth it seemed his senses had somewhat returned, when he gazed upon the child servant and muttered "... A kid? I mean... Ain't that illegal? Or at least a little fucked up?"

The mischievous glint in Reika's eyes vanished, replaced with blood-soaked malice as she whispered in his ear <Not nearly as fucked up as you're about to be.>

His blood ran cold and he tried to leave, but his movements had been made sluggish and Assassin was faster. In a flash, she had overtaken him, pinning him to the ground with daggers pierced through his arms and legs. The fluids spilled by him this night would be converted into mana by Reika's body and used to feed Assassin's spiritual needs, while his flesh would feed Assassin's more immediate hunger pangs. Staring down at the helpless man with a casual smirk that reeked of blood-lust, Reika said to Assassin <This one's not like the others I've brought you this week, Jack; he's really potent. Be careful not to eat so much that it makes your tummy hurt, okay?>

Assassin climbed atop her prey, knife in hand, saying as she ran her tongue over the length of the blade <Don't worry, mother, we'll be careful!> Assassin tore through his shirt, wielding the knife with surgical precision as she carved thick incisions down the length of his chest, slicing down to the bone and lapping up the blood that came out. <We'll make sure to save some for later if we get too full!>

Reika smiled, giving her "daughter" a gentle pat on the head. <That's a good girl. Now, eat up; we wouldn't want your meal to spoil while we talked, would we?>

Assassin made sure to save his throat for last, ensuring that his screams would resound throughout the entire event.

Are familiars normally this proactive and sentient? I know they have the capacity to become witches but still...

This is a special circumstance that arose from Assassin's blending of Servant and Witch. Reika was Assassin's Master in Fate/Apocrypha, and Reika specifically crafted a connection with Assassin by becoming what Assassin had always wanted, a Mother. Because of that emotional attachment, Assassin manifested a facsimile of Reika as her "Familiar", and because of Assassin's unique nature the familiar came out to be more intelligent than it otherwise should have, this Familiar Reika miming the same behavior she was expressing while she was Master of Assassin, that is leading unsuspecting victims to Assassin to be consumed for mana.
