Day 18 Chapter 15
[X] Enetious

After returning to her room in a fuming mess, you could occasionally still hear the sounds of Kyouko's tantrum. But now, you hear no sound coming from upstairs. Tomoe-san doesn't hear it, either.

"I'll go upstairs and make sure she hasn't run out on us," you say, placing your best approximation of a comforting hand onto Tomoe-san's shoulder as you excuse yourself from the table. "While I do that, Mikuni Oriko, you and Kure Kirika are to make whatever necessary preparations you see fit, before meeting with us. We will begin our search as soon as the five of us and our servants have assembled."

You leave your phone on the table just in case Tomoe-san and Mikuni Oriko need to discuss further preparations, and head upstairs to find Kyouko's room. The second floor of the apartment, you recall from a time long gone, is arranged very much like the second floor of the Kaname residence, with a master bedroom, guest bedroom, and bathroom all branching off from a main hallway. Having helped Tomoe-san move Kyouko's things from over from the church yesterday, you already know to check the guest bedroom.

The door is shut, but from the crack underneath the door you can see that the light is on. Sakura Kyouko is brash and impulsive at even the best of times, so the thought of her having escaped out the window to search the night for Assassin by herself is not one that escapes you. Yet, as you open the door, you can breathe easy at the sight of the window tightly closed.

The guest room is simple enough in form. A dresser, likely sourced secondhand from wherever, sits neatly closed in the corner. The red pleather jacket that accompanied several of her other clothing purchases from last Sunday rests on a coat hanger, and articles of clothing which you presume to be yesterday's shirt and delicates lay abandoned on the floor, with no laundry hamper in sight.

The futon, piled high with blankets is pushed up against the opposite corner, with the minifridge and space heater haphazardly positioned beside it. Sitting atop the minifridge is the singed photograph of Kyouko's younger sister, now framed; an act presumably courtesy of Tomoe-san. Yet, while there is no sign of Kyouko's disappearance, she is still missing all the same.

Or so you thought. A light whimper draws your attention back to the pile of blankets on the futon, where a second glance reveals the distressed form of Kyouko, tightly clutching a tear-stained pillow to her chest.

"It's not fair..." she mutters, just loud enough for you to hear her. "She was just a kid... She never did nuthin' ta deserve this, so why'd God have ta take her away?" Shaking, her hand reaches for the photograph of her younger sister. "Why can't I ever keep th' people I care about safe? Why? Why's it always gotta happen ta me?"

"I can't pretend to offer you any words of comfort, Sakura Kyouko," you say, hesitantly approaching the futon. "I too, have lost people that I care about, and I know that it never gets easier."

Kyouko turns her head upwards to look at you; her hardened cherry-coloured eyes have softened in her sadness. "However, what I can tell you is that, if you truly wish to avenge Chitose Yuma, then your best course of action is to cease your current reckless behaviour. Archer believes Assassin to be in possession of an anti-female Noble Phantasm, meaning that if you were to charge in blindly and let your anger guide you, you would be immediately vulnerable and likely to end up as nothing more than a quick snack."

"I understand that you have personal reasons for wanting Assassin dead, but I need for you to understand in return that I am not trying to punish you or anger you by holding you back from directly engaging her. None of us should be directly engaging Assassin in combat; not even Lancer, a servant." Kyouko pulls herself up and into a seated position, and out of courtesy you opt to join her. "I can't help you if you're just looking for an adrenaline high while going to your death. But if you really want to avenge Chitose Yuma, the best way to do that will be to help ensure that Assassin is killed. And the best way to do that is by being smart, surviving, and allowing Rider to do his job."

"Assassin might be a witch, but she's also a servant. Our best bet is to let Rider, Caster, and Berserker do the fighting for us. Tomoe-san and Mikuni Oriko are making final preparations to go find Assassin, and you are more than welcome to join us if you feel up to it."

There is a decided weight time before Kyouko responds, though hardly in a manner which you had expected.

"... I'm useless, aren't I? I... I couldn't keep Momo safe... I couldn't keep Yuma safe either... Couldn't even beat that bitch Kirika without gettin' torn half ta shreds... An' now I'm s'pposed ta stand down an' let everyone else kill Assassin, even though..." The pillow falls from Kyouko's hands, dented from her vice-like grip, but springing back to full as it leaves her grasp. "... Even though I'm th' one who wants her dead most of all."

Kyouko turns to you, and asks "if you had one thing, just one thing that ya really wanted ta do, more'n anyone else in the whole world, an' someone else beat ya to it, how would you feel?"

Just one thing?

That's obvious, isn't it?

It would be to keep Madoka safe.

"You can think on that fer a bit, if ya need to. I..."Kyouko reaches for her fallen pillow, giving it a quick fluff before returning to a reclined position. "... I know enough ta know that I shouldn't be fightin' when I'm this messed up. Last time I tried, it... Didn't go very well fer me."

"I understand," you say, rising to take your leave.

[X] What is your answer to Kyouko's question?
-[X] "... If the one thing that I wanted to do was done by another... it would hurt, like I imagine it hurts to be sidelined due to circumstances outside of your control. I can't imagine that I wouldn't do anything in order to do it, but at the same time I can't say that I wouldn't try and superimpose myself into the position of doing my one thing if given even the slightest of chances that it would work out. You, Sakura Kyoko, have that chance, as you forget that whenever Assassin is overwhelmed, she flees her Labyrinth and briefly abandons the field of mist that allows her to have such a potent attack against all women. It is why we Puella Magi will not be miles away looking through our Servants' eyes, but rather outside the Labyrinth waiting to strike." Pause for a moment and gain a contemplative look. "If events do follow through as I think they will, then I can personally make it so that you can strike down Assassin, when she is most helpless and unable to retaliate, if you'll only give our Servants the chance to make her flee her Labyrinth as she always as done up until now. But otherwise, you must promise me that if things go south that you'll allow our Servants to take out Assassin, and rid this world of Chitose Yuma's killer."
[X] After giving your speech to Kyoko, allow her the choice of whether they are all going to hunt down Assassin tonight, or if she wishes to collect herself and hunt Assassin tomorrow night. They do it together or not at all.
-[X] If she agree to hunt with them tonight, go along with the plan as usual.
-[X] If she feels she needs a day to cope, adjourn the meeting, but see if they can't have Caster and Oriko try and work together first. Personally apologize to Oriko over the false alarm, and head back home with Archer. Text Madoka to check in, informing her of what they plan on doing if she wants. When they arrive home, ask Archer if he can teach her how to safely overload her projected arrows with mana in order to make them explode on contact.

Okay, so ended up with Homura's response being part answer and part motivational speech. My thinking is that when Assassin flees from her Labyrinth, Homura can tie herself to Archer and Kyoko with Archer's shroud and Kyoko can in for the kill in time-stop. Also, quite the quick update! Truly, you spoil us, SVS. :)

EDIT for grammar

I'd think differently.
Homura isn't taking revenge. Homura's goal is to avert Madoka's death and damnation.
She'd take it at all costs.

And to think, originally I had only intended for this to be a disappointingly short post.

Thenking :thonk: You have too many wouldn'ts and can'ts, Enetious. Call me stupid, but the first couple sentences are a bit confusing to me. So, it would hurt if someone else 'did it', but she would do anything to do it... after the fact of it happening?

EDIT: It feels like Enetious and Veekie are saying the same thing here, or at least the same idea

Uh... not exactly sure how you got that from my vote, though feel free to explain it to me if I'm missing something. I intended for the meaning of this section to mean that Homura will strive to do whatever she possibly can in order to accomplish her one goal, though the only point in which she doesn't see herself meddling is in the event that doing so would endanger Madoka. The latter part is something she essentially does in Rebellion, so I added in that sort of thinking to an extent in her speech. Unless you're referring to the "allowing Kyoko to take the final shot" bit, then my reasoning behind it is to allow her to avenge Yuma. No one else in the group even knows Yuma, much less had any sort of friendship with her, so it makes sense for Kyoko to take out what is essentially an amalgamation of Wraiths made up of mana, of which is incredibly evil in nature, to avenge the person she cared about, rather than a random person who had no knowledge of Yuma taking the Witch out for reasons otherwise. It costs very little for Homura to promise this to Kyoko, and under very specific circumstances only as she has her time-skip up and running again, so its not like Homura is making a concession but rather she's placating Kyoko and hoping this'll make her more amiable towards the group in the future.

EDIT: @WanderingTwix its referring to protecting Madoka. It would hurt Homura if she couldn't do her job and someone else ended up having doing it, but as soon as she's able, she'd try and put herself back into position as Madoka's protector ASAP. Protecting Madoka is a 24/7 job in these parts.

With Kyouko's personality, I don't think she really wants or needs an entire motivational speech. Right now, she just needs someone to listen to and empathise with her.

[X] Remain silent for a while, sit down next to her, then hold her hand
-[X] Tell her that you once had someone you were close to and truly cared for, before she was...murdered right before your eyes
-[X] Acknowledge her pain and promise that Yuma would be avenged, but explain that personally killing Assassin would neither alleviate the grief, nor bring Yuma back
-[X] Answer her question; that it wouldnt matter who it was that achieved your goal, as long as it came to be
-[X] Nevertheless, state that you would find a way for Kyouko to finish Assassin off
[X] Stay with Kyouko until she feels better, and call off the plan for today, apologising to Oriko and Kirika for the trouble caused

The problem with that is that I think she'd take it as pitying and demeaning, that she's too weak to handle it, and with Homura's current relationship with her (which is next to nothing at the moment) that approach will only be detrimental. The "motivational speech" quote was mostly in humor, rather the speech is supposed to alleviate her current depression over the whole situation while also giving her hope of a proper end to Yuma's killer, giving her an opportunity. Kyoko currently thinks of Assassin as nothing more than "Yuma's Killer", and not as the monster killing other innocents, and considering that she's the only one who knew Yuma, to her it would be like if Pein killed Itachi before Sasuke could, it would be someone who has no emotional investment killing the target in question leaving the person with emotional investment in the dust. Sending the one person who currently has a decent relationship with Kyoko, Mami, to speak with her about this as well wouldn't end well, as Mami has been putting off hunting Assassin in order to keep to her studies. Case-in-point, until people begin to have a better relationship with Kyoko overtime, none of them are going to properly sit down with her and comfort her as you're suggesting Homura to do, as Kyoko is still really closed off to the others at the moment.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure how my vote could possibly have Homura be construed as pitying or demeaning. In no way did I mention anything that would suggest that Kyouko is too weak, and bringing up your loss would help her to relate to you and be more receptive to listening.
Right now, no matter how strong Kyouko might be, she is but a teenage girl crying into her pillow, and barring some cultural differences that I may be unaware of, they typically respond better to people sitting down, listening and relating to their problems than to listening to speeches difficult enough to parse while skimming through, let alone listen to while in an emotional state.
And no matter the things she has experienced so far, I don't really think Kyouko is necessarily that bloodthirsty of a character to fixate on killing Assassin, and that she knows that even being a hero would not bring Yuma back here

@Akumura Eh, more like without a decent connection with Kyoko, Kyoko's canonically known for hiding within her abrasive attitude and "dog-eats-dog world" mindset. Coming from the girl she's noted in the past to be creepy and weird and who she holds no personal connection to, it'll come off as demeaning to her that Homura thinks she needs her comfort (and remember that even at this point in the story, like in the anime, Kyoko has been relying solely on herself for years and only truly trusts herself, and she only just let Mami back into her life, so she'll have major trust issues). And Kyoko isn't necessarily blood-thirsty, but rather she thinks that she's the only one doing this for Yuma, rather than grouping her off along with the rest of the faceless victims and killing Assassin to prevent more catastrophe like the rest of the crew is intending.

As for the speech, it ultimately comes down to (A) Homura's wanting of protecting Madoka herself, (B) Opening an opportunity for Kyoko to deal the final strike, as to rouse Kyoko from her temporary frustration-induced sadness, and (C) to emphasize that she should be prioritizing the death of Assassin if B doesn't work out. Remember, that SVS doesn't have to use the "speech" that I created, just to utilize what its trying to convey into the story. and also, it seemed as if Kyoko's bout of frustration was dying down and calming at the end of the last chapter, so it should allow a bit a time to get off a few sentences to her in response.

Perhaps she does indeed usually hide behind her brazen demeanour, but look at what she has said recently and how her current state is; that veneer has cracked, at least for now, and this is literally the perfect opportunity to form a bond with someone who, after Madoka, is probably the person who Homura has been closest to and trusts the most over the loops.
Kyouko basically just lost her family for a second time, and I sincerely doubt that she would get upset over anyone trying to comfort her over that, especially with how she currently is.
She seems distressed that she isn't strong enough, amidst the results from last fight and not being able to protect Yuma, and lecturing Kyouko here would, at best, only serve to push her further away during subsequent interactions.
This is a critical juncture that could pave the way to truly bringing Kyouko to our side, and I don't want to waste it.

And thus I had Homura give her the opportunity to avenge Yuma. If that does work out, would Kyoko not feel any sort of bond with the person who allowed it all to come to fruition? Would that not be the perfect opportunity to get into Kyoko's good graces?

Keyword "anyone". She has no issues showing her frustration, however she has no reason to open herself up to Homura in the first place any further than she has, and in this case this is just one bout of frustration and sadness of many of which she's sure to have experienced, since she lost Yuma weeks ago. She doesn't really know Homura, and hiding behind a confrontational mask is sure to have an affect on her outlook on people she doesn't completely trust (e.g. literally letting people she doesn't know get fed to familiars to get grief seeds). She can overcome it like in Rebellion, sure, but that'll take time of which hasn't passed yet.

If I'm not mistaken, Homura literally just "lectured" Kyoko in the last Chapter, or at least that's what it seemed like to me. The "lecture" you're refering to is 1. Homura's answer to Kyoko's question, 2. an offer to take out Assassin via Homura's ability, and 3. to get an assurance that Kyoko will not Rambo things if things go sideways. Not much lecturing going around from those points, I think.

*ahem* Anyways, to anyone else casually viewing the quest, could you cast in your votes (whether it be an existing one or one of your own)? Votes have kinda been tied for the last 24 hours, and votes have been open for around 36 hours. Thanks! :D

As much as I love the discussion, this-

is a point that I can't state enough.

Votes are currently sitting at a 2-1-1-1 split, though there's only a single sentence

separating you and Twix from having the same vote. We could really use a definitive vote being cast sooner rather than later.

Day 18 Chapter 16
[X] Enetious

What is your answer to Kyouko's question? It's something that has been on your mind ever since this loop started.

"The thing I want to do is... Different, from what you want. If you want to kill Assassin, there is a definitive end to your desire. But for me... I want to protect someone, so the only way for my mission to end is if one of us dies. If I were unable to protect her, it would hurt, just as I imagine it hurts for you to be sidelined for reasons wholly outside of your control. But..." Before, the thought of someone else saving Madoka had never even crossed your mind. How could it? Who else would do it if you could not? But now, the presence of these servants have complicated things far too greatly for you to be able to calculate how everything will turn out. "... But, as long as she is safe, in the end that's all that matters to me."

"Pinky, right?" asks Kyouko, to which you nod your head. "Ya really love her that much, don't'cha?"

"With all my heart. Just the same as I imagine you loved your sister, or Chitose Yuma."

Kyouko makes a face at you, sticking out her tongue as she responds "Eww, not like that. But... Yeah, I get what you mean. An', I know that killin' Assassin won't really make me feel better. Even if I kill that bitch, it won't bring back Yuma, but..."

"But it's still something you feel you have to do to avenge her." Kyouko mutters what sounds like an affirmative "hmm". "I can't make any promises to you about how the battle will turn out. I have something of a guess, based on our own experiences and on what Mikuni Oriko has told me, and if I'm right, I may still be able to arrange for you the opportunity to deal Assassin the killing blow." There's a brief moment between the two of you when Kyouko's eyes light up, and she stares at you, hoping. "However, if I'm wrong, I need for you to promise me that you won't put yourself in unnecessary danger."

Kyouko is silent, hesitating; you are unsure if that's something she can promise you. You hope that it is.

You allow the silence to persist for a few moments longer as you wait for Kyouko's response. When none comes, you say instead "You said that you wanted to sit tonight out. Does that still hold?"

"Yeah. I... Gettin' th' chance ta kill Assassin sounds great an' all, but I know myself enough ta say that I shouldn't be fightin' when I'm like this."

"I understand. We'll move forward with the plan tomorrow night, then."

Kyouko gives you a confused look. "After all that time ya spent plannin', an' yer not even gonna do it tonight? An' didn't I hear ya say sumthin' about havin' those two crazies meet up with ya? Ain't they gunna be mad if ya cancel on 'em?"

"We are a team, Sakura Kyouko. Either we do this together, or we don't do it at all." Kyouko nods, before rolling over onto her side facing away from you. "Did you want the light on?" you ask as you head out. Hearing no answer, you decide to leave the room as you entered it, gently closing the door behind you.

You descend the stairs to the sound of Tomoe-san chatting with Mikuni Oriko. The two of them are still discussing a few last-minute details. Hearing your footsteps behind her, Tomoe-san turns, asking "Is everything alright, Akemi-san?"

"Yes." Tomoe-san smiles, welcoming you back to the discussion table. "However, she's still rather distraught by everything. I think she would appreciate having a friend by her side right now. We'll proceed with the plan tomorrow night instead." Tomoe-san nods, heading upstairs to take your place.

She's a better friend to Kyouko in this timeline than any relationship you might have described the two of you having in the past. You're sure that it's for the best, this way. Picking your phone up off the table, you turn the speaker setting off and raise the device to your ear. "I apologize for interrupting your dinner, but in light of recent events I believe it would be best that we postpone until tomorrow. I hope I haven't caused you too major of an inconvenience."

Where did those words come from?

"Well... I can't say that all of this has happened at the most ideal time for me, but that's alright. Everything worked out in the end, and I can always reheat dinner. The well being of our team as a whole is more important, wouldn't you agree?"

[ ] "If you'd like, I can have Archer make you dinner as compensation."
[ ] "If there's anything I can do to make it up to you, let me know."
[ ] "Of course. I'm glad that's something we can agree on."
[ ] Other (write-in)

"Will I still be working with Caster when we try again tomorrow night?"

"Yes. However, if it's possible, I'll see if Tomoe-san can convince Caster to do a few exercises with you beforehand."

"I see... Thank you, Akemi-san. If you'll excuse me, Kirika and I will be finishing dinner now, so I would appreciate if you would let us have this time to ourselves."

"Of course, I understand. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience." The line goes silent, and you return your phone to your pocket. "Archer, pack it in for the night and head over to Tomoe-san's apartment."

So you wait. You wait for Tomoe-san to return from comforting Kyouko, and you wait for Archer to arrive. Fortunately, as long as Madoka is within reach, no wait is ever too long to bear.

<Homura: Is Sayaka feeling any better?>

<Madoka: I dont know. She was rlly upset at Kyouko-chan for some reason. I hope its nothing bad>

<Homura: I'm sure it's nothing too serious.>
<Homura: Anyway, did you want to know what Tomoe-san and I discussed after you left?>

<Madoka: Is it about... U know... That?>

<Homura: It is.>

<Madoka: ... I know u dont like talking about that, so... Its okay if u dont want 2>

So you don't. Instead, you and Madoka talk about small things; meaningless, save for the meaning that your words give to one another. And when the things you had been waiting for finally occur, you and Tomoe-san share your goodbyes, and you and Archer head home.

"I've seen you fire projectiles before that explode when they hit their mark," you say, reaching into your pocket for your apartment key. "Would it be possible for you to teach me how to do the same?"

"Maybe. I know you have it in you to charge a projectile to the point that it explodes, but... Well, if it is possible, it'll require practice. It won't be easy, either. You'll have to learn how much mana you can put into something before it explodes, how long it takes before an amount of mana causes an explosion, and how that much mana impacts the speed of your projectile, in order to properly gauge the amount you need to pour into a projectile to get it to explode at just the right time; not to mention that once you have the theory down, you'll have to learn how to do the calculations in your head in an instant if you want to use your exploding projectiles effectively in combat."

In other words, it sounds to you like Archer is saying you'll need to study ballistic geometry and the mechanics behind air-burst projectiles in order to understand how to turn your request into a reality. "Oh, and one other thing-" Archer reaches into his pocket for a piece of paper, unfolding it to reveal a flier- Black and white and devoid of graphics, save for a red sunburst laid over a cross.

"The Church of the Righteous Sister... Well, that's a new one."

[X] "Of course. I'm glad that's something we can agree on."
-[X] "If there's anything I can do to make it up to you, let me know."
-[X] "If you'd like, I can have Archer make you dinner as compensation."
[X] The Church appears to be yet another anomaly in this timeline, that might warrant investigation. With all the powers you have seen at play recently, it is imperative to exercise caution here, until more information has been obtained.

[X] Practice projection magic. Ask Archer if there's any way to cut down on energy costs or to make her projections more detailed than what she's been projecting thus far.

Hoping that Archer will teach Homura the concept of a personal Aria, like "Trace on" and Rin's foreign worded ones. If I recall correctly, it shouldn't be very difficult to achieve, just that she gets the words and their meanings to her right when making one up.

Good question.

Alright gents, we're 2-2 for votes and it's been 24 hours. Let's see if we can get a tiebreaker before the end of the day.
