Madoka wants to know everything about you... Of course she does. That girl cares too much about you for her own good. You can't tell her everything; she wouldn't understand. But you can tell her a few things all the same.

"Let's start with introductions, shall we?" you ask, to which Madoka enthusiastically nods at the prospect. "My name is Akemi Homura. I'm fourteen years old, I was born and raised in the Shinagawa ward and moved to Mitakihara last year, and I'm hopelessly in love with my classmate and best friend, Kaname Madoka." Real smooth, you. What a way to introduce yourself.

Madoka giggles, taking a sip from the water bottle before responding in kind. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Homura-chan. My name is Kaname Madoka. I'm also fourteen years old, I've lived in Mitakihara all my life, and my newest friend is hopelessly in love with me. And I'm very curious to know more about her. What kinds of things does she like? What are her thoughts about the city she's moved to? Does she have a favourite colour? A favourite flower?"

"One at a time, please." Okay, good start so far. Madoka wants to know simple things about you. You can oblige her those things. "Well, my favourite colour is pink. I don't have a favourite flower, but my least favourite flower is lycoris radiata." So far so good; small answers for a small question. Madoka's face drops when you tell her your least favourite flower; she doesn't say anything, but you have a pretty good idea of what she's thinking.

She would only be half right. Except, paradoxically, the person you're mourning is sitting right next to you.

"What else?" Madoka asks, hanging on to your every word. "Do you have a favourite book? Movie? TV show? Do you have any hobbies, or things that you enjoyed doing when you still lived in Tokyo?"

You shake your head at Madoka's mention of movies and TV. "I never really watched much television growing up, and the only movie I can recall enjoying was seeing Spirited Away with you on Sunday. But I do have a favourite book... The Wind in the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame. Since I was always in and out of hospitals I never really had the chance to make friends with kids my own age. But Mole, Rat, Mr. Toad, and Mr. Badger didn't care that I was stuck in a hospital and couldn't come out to play, and so they became the closest things I had to friends... I know, it sounds so childish, doesn't it?"

Madoka surprises you with a hug. It shouldn't surprise you at this point, but somehow it still manages to. "That's not childish at all, Homura-chan." You can tell from her voice that she wants to cry for you, but she's holding back her tears. "I know how lucky I am to have have always had Sayaka-chan and Hitomi-chan around; I can't imagine what it must have been like for you. But it's okay now, because we're all here for you."

"Thank you," you whisper in Madoka's ear.

"Now, I believe you asked me about my thoughts on Mitakihara?" Madoka nods, and you continue. "Well, I think my perception of the city is unfairly clouded by the death of my father, and my prolonged stay in the hospital that followed, but since meeting you..."

... Since meeting Madoka, you have been forced to watch her die, over and over again, as you fail to save her no matter how hard you try. Since meeting Madoka, you have felt the highest highs and the lowest lows that any person has ever and can ever feel. Since meeting Madoka, you have done nothing but rejoice at her friendship and suffer at her death. Since meeting Madoka, your every emotion has been simultaneously in overdrive and deadened beyond the point of resuscitation. Since meeting Madoka...

"... Since meeting you, I've never felt move alive. You've brought a light to my life that I didn't even know I was missing until I met you. You make me feel things that I've never felt before, and you make me want to never let those feelings go. I... Your friendship is the reason that Mitakihara speaks to me, in a way that Tokyo never did. I know I said it last night, but I mean it. I love you, Madoka, and I want to be able to experience more of this wonderful city with you."

Somehow, though you doubt this to be possible, Madoka's embrace feels even warmer now than it did only a few moments ago. "Of course, Homura-chan. We'll experience all of it, together." And then, just when you think Madoka can't get any warmer, the hug ends, and once more you're face-to-face with the most beautiful smile on earth. "Is there anything else you want to tell me before class ends?"

"Well, I guess I could tell you a little bit about where I grew up. We lived in an apartment overlooking the Meguro River. Both of my parents had good jobs, so we were able to live in a fairly large place. Mother was a professor at the Tokyo Metropolitan College of Industrial Technology, and father was a diplomat working at the Macedonian Embassy. I remember he was friends with a British man, a professor from London who always seemed to hang around the embassy on his holidays... Oh, what was his name again? ... El-Melloi, I think it was?"

"What about school? Where did you go to school before moving?"

"Officially, I was enrolled at St. Hilda's before mother..." you swallow "Before father moved us to Mitakihara, but between everything that happened that year, I actually did all of my seventh year coursework in the hospital. I don't actually think I ever set foot on the school grounds, to be honest."

Madoka continues to smile. "I'm glad you're opening up to me, Homura-chan. It's not good to keep everything inside, you know?"

You had almost forgotten that you and Madoka were in the middle of class, but the PE instructor's whistle snaps you back to reality. Class is wrapping up soon, and "We should get going. We'll need to change back into our uniforms for our next class."

Madoka nods and stands first, offering you her hand which you gladly accept. It isn't much, but you feel like you've closed the distance between yourself and Madoka by a small amount. Maybe there actually is hope for your relationship this time around...

*the muffled cry of "El-Melloi II" can be heard in the distance*

Well, now we know a little bit more about Homura. We know she lived in Tokyo and attended a private Catholic school before transferring to Mitakihara, and St. Hilda's School in the Shinagawa ward fit the bill perfectly, so that's why I decided to have her be from Shinagawa. The more you know.

I really need to know who Lancelot would be calling a thot in this scenario. His master? She's in a committed, monogamous relationship; she hardly counts. His master's lover? He'll be getting "Berserker, kill yourself"'d the instant he opens his mouth. Lancer? She's Desperately Seeking Sigurd.

To say nothing of the fact that a British knight of French noble descent summoned in 2011 couldn't possibly know a slur that IRL only came about in the last year or so.

I get that you want to see potty mouth Lancelot and I can respect that, but the logic of the insult just doesn't line up here.

Little need to apologize. I've no problem with shitposting, but I demand that shitposts at least be of sufficient quality. I can accept Lancelot knowing insults like bastard, wench, or whorespawn, and there's a chance that he might have even picked up something like slattern from the Anglos somewhere along the way, or maybe some French slur that I don't know because I don't speak French. But thot? There's no way a knight from the 500's would know that.

How did Homura father know about Waver?

Because her father worked in the Macedonian Embassy - and before you or anyone asks, yes, there really is a Macedonian Embassy in the Shinagawa ward of Tokyo - and Waver, big fan of DUDE as he is, visited the embassy on his holidays because, being in Japan, it's not that far of a stretch from grandma and grandpa. He didn't know who Waver was or where or what he actually taught, he just knew that Waver was a professor from London visiting for the holidays.

Also, if I could get some more votes from anyone in either the regular crowd or the viewing gallery, that would be much appreciated.

"Archer, are you there?"

Your name is Emiya Shirou. You've been busy contemplating the news of the day, particularly in regards to the Berserker servant summoned by Kure Kirika. At least, you presume them to be a Berserker, but as your 'employer' pointed out they could also be someone much more... Familiar to you, someone you haven't seen in many years.

Angra Mainyu... Avenger, the eighth servant from the Hollow Grail War of six years ago, and the malevolent intelligence behind the corruption of the Holy Grail. It's unlikely, but if miss Kure has managed to summon him as her servant, there's no telling what might occur...

Your master should be paying attention to her classes right now, but in light of the day's news you're willing to let it slide this time.

"Yes, what is it master?"

"The meeting will occur tonight. I want you to be prepared for the worst."

"Wait, tonight? Oh no, I don't trust this one bit. Those two bluster and piss about for days, and then only call for the meeting once Kure has her servant? I smell a trap."

"As do I. Tomoe-san wants us to sit down and talk before we come to blows, but I want you to be ready to wipe out Mikuni Oriko and Kure Kirika the instant it looks like something is about to go down."

"Are you sure that's a good idea? Tomoe-san's servant, Gilgamesh, is absurdly powerful beyond anything you can comprehend. If I act prematurely and take out Mikuni and Kure before Tomeo-san feels like we've made an effort to communicate with them, she may turn him against us."

"If Mikuni Oriko and Kure Kirika are taken out of the equation, then I will have no trouble dispatching Tomoe-san if she becomes a threat. I..."
You can hear the strain in her voice, as if she's holding back from saying "I've done it before" or something to the extent. "... I can find other allies, if it comes to that."

"I don't know if I can trust that kind of thinking, master."

"... Neither do I."

Well, looks like Homura knows little Waver.

Really now? Well, what do they always say about the world being small? You never would have guessed.

Your name is Akemi Homura. Beside you stands Tomoe Mami. Behind the two of you is her Caster servant, Gilgamesh. He's eying you carefully, as you eye Tomoe-san with equal care. You can only faintly sense Archer's presence in the city; he's positioned himself somewhere far away, with an eye on the overgrown mansion at whose gates the three of you now stand. The sun has just begun its downward traverse, and its rays cut through the western-style wrought iron fence to cast long shadows on the rose garden where your meeting will occur.

This is the home of Mikuni Oriko, and it is here that Kure Kirika instructed the two of you to come after school. Your enemy's wish to maintain the home-field advantage may seem like an arrogant display of power and the misguided notion that she need not fear you, but it gives you some small measure of comfort. That Mikuni Oriko has chosen her own residence as the place of meeting means that she does not intend to fight you here. She may attempt to do so later, possibly even as soon as you are a safe distance away, but for the duration of your talk you and Tomoe-san shall be safe from harm.

Kure Kirika is the one to open the gates for you, smirking as she gestures for the three of you to join her and Mikuni Oriko at a small table in the garden.

"Please, sit down, won't you?" asks Mikuni Oriko, pouring tea for herself and for all her guests. "I imagine that we shall have much to discuss."

You and Tomoe-san take your seats across from Mikuni Oriko, while Gilgamesh opts to remain standing. Kure Kirika joins the four of you in short order, giving her lover a quick kiss on the cheek before being seated herself. Behind them, Lancer has joined the table, though Kure Kirika's servant is nowhere to be seen.

NEW
Major characters unlocked!
Mikuni Oriko - the mastermind behind Mitakihara's magical girl murders. Armed with the power of precognition, and aided in her schemes by her lover Kure Kirika and her servant Lancer, Oriko is confident that she can avert the fate of destruction hanging over the world.

Kure Kirika - Along with Lancer, Kure Kirika is the prime executor of Mitakihara's magical girl murders. The obsessive - and frankly, axe-craxy - lover and cohort of Mikuni Oriko, Kure Kirika displays unfailing loyalty to her girlfriend and carries out her duties without hesitation.

Since the vote was 3-1 in favour of skipping to the end of the day, I was originally going to only do that. But then I realized I was half a post short, and I still owed my boy Jaune some replies as well, so this is how I've made two seemingly-conflicting votes flow smoothly.

A surprise attack against a precog isn't going to work. They have also had plenty of time to prepare, so going for anything at all now won't have any advantages over later anyway. If we are already here to join Mami to negotiate, we may as well listen to the other side and know what they want

Most diplomatic first.

WHOOPS all my alerts stopped coming from this and between that and a load of Happening going on this fell completely out of my head, sorry bout that, wow, and here we are with the talkin'.

Many different concerns about the implications of Waver and Caren and whatnot actually legitimately existing in Homura's backstory, although I guess I suppose it wouldn't necessarily have too much impact if the intersect between Servant things and Meguca thing was only in the metatemporal present, although tbh I'm actually surprised Caren wouldn't have been in a position to pick anything weird up about Homura in previous loops, at least, some of the peculiar ones? Don't know much about Caren, but she'd have to have been informed to keep an eye out for Homura's medical condition, surely, and with later-loop Homura consistently using magic to nope aforementioned condition, it feels like something that'd have come up? At least at some point in the many many loops. Then again, eh, just as likely not, I suppose.

As for presently...

I agree that listening first at present is probably the best course of action- if Oriko and Kirika do truly intend to give us at least passable attempts at sounding like they have terms to negotiate, best let them have the rope to hang themselves in Mami's eyes. And more information- even scraps of it- would be good to have first for figuring out how to actively approach the situation. I expect that Kirika's Servant is either ready to surprise attack us, or on overwatch. I'm curious to know whether Oriko and Kirika feel even the slightest need to let us try and break negotiations first in front of Mami- also, concerned about what they're keeping all those meguca soul gems for, and whether their collection plays into a plan related to something that must be done while we (or some number of us) are still alive (e.g. this meeting) or whether it's for dealing with some situation that comes about afterwards (e.g. Walpurgisnacht, or some Nasuverse-interaction-specific event).

Also, something to note- if we're even thinking about a preemptive strike the moment anything seems off, Gilgamesh must already know about it, and I wouldn't bet on Oriko not having some idea either. Precogs being what they are. With respect to Oriko, if she knows we know about her precog, that means she may be able to bring out her knowledge of our considerations as evidence against us (e.g. "you've been planning how to kill us as soon as you think you can get away with it" or something that we can't lie particularly well about). Additionally, while Gilgamesh has spoken to us about how the meeting is likely to turn out (i.e. in bloodshed and death) and hasn't outright advised us against a preemptive strike- and would probably not disagree personally with the fact it might be a an option- it would probably be better not going into this with the idea that our hair trigger action will be to carpet bomb the place. Particularly not to carpet bomb the place knowing that we'd have to deal with Mami and Gilgamesh as enemies afterwards. Gil won't like that and if we've thought it he might already know about it and be watching us to keep us from going down that path. Gilgamesh would also likely follow Mami's order to try and get everyone to stand down and start talking- and that may include ribboning us and trying to get us to calm down, at which point she's open to being taken out herself by O&K&L. A more defensive reaction- Rho Aias, for example, and anything else we could conceivably pull out- would be less damning in Mami's eyes, and possibly more useful for dealing with an immediate single threat while not losing track of the situation fully.

At least, those are my initial thoughts about the matter; have to see more about how O&K are approaching this situation to have a better idea.

Ah- also, it's not unlikely that Oriko will try and air what she knows of our metaphorical dirty laundry at this meeting. E.g. our own original attempt at a preemptive strike against her, as well as anything her Sight has given her about Homura's loops and actions related to said. Additionally, I'm not sure whether Oriko will attempt to argue about the Greater Good with respect to Madoka and her world-destroying potential (though admittedly that would involve witchbombing Mami, something that I'm not sure Oriko would want to deal with, though it does make for another extremely potent weapon that Oriko holds over our heads), but if she does, we may also want to be prepared for the idea that Mami might agree with her (before self-destructing) about the Greater Good (since, after all, in a timeline long ago it was Mami who flipped her shit about the Witchbomb and concluded that murdering all her friends and then also herself was necessary to preserve the most lives). Gilgamesh can actually probably help with both the Witchbomb and the Greater Good argument, since in the former case, well, he's not liable to just let Mami go and off herself, and in the latter case, Gilgamesh has himself said:

But no matter what choices the world shall make, I have seen the way in which this world ends. Archer, you and your master must emerge victorious if there is to be any hope for the future."

If given the chance, he may be willing to argue the point and/or correct Mami with respect to any misapprehensions O&K give her about the situation. Mami hopefully would trust him enough to listen, even if Oriko doesn't trust his Sight more than she trusts her interpretation of her own.

Doesn't mean we can or should count too heavily on him, since he's got his own thing going, and Mami, of course, but I think Gilgamesh is, interestingly enough, Homura's and Archer's greatest ally in this entire mess of a situation.

But yeah, we should be prepared for Unfortunate Facts about the situation to come to light during this meeting, depending on how O&K decide to approach it.

Edit: Also, while it's totally not a thing, my first random thought about Kirika's Servant was, if non-canon Servants were a possibility, it would be hilarious if we actually had berserker-fied shadow Mordred instead of Berserkerlot. Since Mordred's armor and such is identity concealing too, and it may work on Gilgamesh's sight.

You don't trust the tea being served by your host, but Tomoe-san, if she distrusts it, gives no signal to the contrary. She sips, slowly, with the same care and precision as always. "This is good tea," she remarks, placing her cup down. There's a slight flash of tooth to Kure Kirika's smile, but Mikuni Oriko's face is stony as she silently nods. You don't trust that smile; is it a warning? Have they done something to the tea that would put you or Tomoe-san at risk? Or is she merely trying to throw the two of you off your game by making you think that something is amiss?

"Archer, is there any sign of Kure Kirika's servant?"

"Negative, but if I see anything I"ll be sure to let you know."

"Appreciated. If I give the signal, fire on her first."

"Understood."

The tension in the air is thick. Mikuni Oriko is silent, the look on her face telling you plain as day that she's waiting for one of you to speak up first. You give Tomoe-san a slight nudge with your elbow. She looks at you, and you look back to her. Nods are shared, and she makes her opening statements.

"Mikuni-san, Kure-san, I very much appreciate you agreeing to meet with Akemi-san and I on such short notice. I believe this discussion is one that is well warranted."

"As do I," Mikuni Oriko replies, between sips of her own tea. "I as well, am glad that we could meet face-to-face, Tomoe Mami. If nothing else, I hope we can put behind us the hostility displayed towards Kirika and I by your second."

"Actually, Mikuni-san, that is a matter which I had hoped to discuss with you." So far, there has been no change to Mikuni Oriko's face; so far, nothing has happened yet that she has not foreseen. "Akemi-san claims to have prior experience in dealing with the two of you, and as well has levied some very grievous charges against you and Kure-san."

"I am curious to know the contents of these charges." You notice something as Mikuni Oriko sets down her tea. The back of her hand is rife with smudges, and only a single part of her Command Seal - a spiraling, thorn-studded vine - remains. That's good; she's had to use up two already, putting you and Tomoe-san at a clear advantage over her. Lancer must be harder for her to control than you initially believed, or else she's had her fair share of bad luck recently.

"Akemi-san has charged you, Kure-san, and Lancer, as being the responsible parties behind the recent string of murders in Mitakihara. Thirteen in Mitakihara, six in Kazamino, and one in Shirome." Golden eyes meet emerald, both narrowing to thin slits. "Tell me, Mikuni-san; is Akemi-san correct in her accusation? Are the three of you responsible?"

The silence as all ears wait for Mikuni Oriko's response is deafening in comparison to the soft "Yes" that escapes her mouth when the answer finally arrives.

"Why?" You can see the sadness on Tomoe-san's face, and behind her golden eyes, as she tries and fails to comprehend the reason behind Mikuni Oriko's actions. "What on earth could have possibly compelled you to take the lives of so many innocent young girls?"

"If you would like, you can think of my efforts as being humanitarian in nature."

"Humanitarian? Mikuni-san, you... You are a murderer! You have the blood of twenty children on your hands, and you dare to say that your 'efforts' are humanitarian? Are you out of your mind?"

"Hardly, Tomoe-san. It is with a most heavy heart which I commit to my work. I know full well that what I am doing is brutal, and many would consider it inhumane, but in the end it really is the only way."

"I... I don't understand. What good could possibly come from the deaths of so many?"

Mikuni Oriko seems immune to the pain which colours Tomoe-san as she says, simply, "The salvation of the world." There is no response from Tomoe-san. "Walpurgisnacht is coming, and it brings with it the power to destroy the world if it is not stopped. The deaths of those puella magi, and the many more that will follow in the coming month, will lay the foundation for a plan that will see Walpurgisnacht defeated and the end of the world forestalled."

"More... You've already killed twenty and yet you're planning to kill more? What kind of monster are you-"

Tomoe-san doesn't have the chance to finish her sentence. The instant the word "monster" crossed her lips, Kure Kirika had lunged across the table, donning her battle garb in an instant and pressing her long, claw-like blades against Tomoe-san's Soul Gem. "Finish that thought, bitch, and I'll fucking kill you."

Caster makes no motion to protect his master; his arms remain crossed over his chest and his glare remains stoic. Yet, dozens of golden pools of light have surrounded the table, and from each pool, the tip of a sword or spear is angled towards Kure Kirika. "And if you value your life in the slightest, mongrel, you shall remove yourself from the personage of my master."

Mikuni Oriko stands, placing herself in the center of the conflict. Immediately, Kure Kirika withdraws, and Caster calls off his attack as she removes herself from his master. "I do not think you fully understand the scope of my plan, Tomoe-san; so please, let me enlighten you." Mikuni Oriko turns to her servant, asking "Lancer, if you would retrieve the item, please?"

Lancer says nothing as she turns, departing from the discussion to retrieve whatever the item is. You aren't quite sure you like the direction that this discussion is heading.

[ ] How do you proceed?

Ummmmm wow the heck, that's an opening move there.

Okay so they're starting on a different Greater Good angle than I'd anticipated, huh, but it is a Greater Good angle they're going for first. If they're trying to kill Mami actively, they're making a show of justifying themselves to her first, seemingly unlike with other meguca they've been sniping- and they may not outright be trying to kill Mami, if that's the case.

Notable- the line of argument Oriko proposes

"Walpurgisnacht is coming, and it brings with it the power to destroy the world if it is not stopped. The deaths of these twenty puella magi, and the many more that will follow in the coming month, will lay the foundation for a plan that will see Walpurgisnacht defeated and the end of the world forestalled."

appears to conflate Walpurgisnacht with the end of the world. And yet she is also explicitly targeting Madoka in this timeline- there wouldn't be any reason to do that if Oriko's starter panic vision had been about Walpurgisnacht instead of Krimhild Gretchen (or another Madoka-related threat). We can make the assessment that Oriko is, then, being deliberately deceptive in her opening about what power is liable to destroy the world, unless that's something the Walpurgisnacht of this timeline is also capable of- with the increased power levels, on one hand, it's possible, on the other hand Walpurgisnacht is a Witch that has existed historically and hasn't yet destroyed the world. Kyubey themself would likely be acting against it if it were likely to do so, unless Cubes has already hit Earth's power harvesting quota, which I find unlikely. It's possible that this whole bullshit is Kyubey acting through Oriko to counteract a world-destruction-capable Walpurgisnacht, but that feels like it's multiplying entities beyond necessity. Though we also haven't really had eyes on Kyubey lately...

At any rate, it looks like Oriko is not opening with the Witchbomb, which is interesting.

Also notable- Gilgamesh was not able to respond quickly enough to place a barrier of any kind between Kirika and Mami's Soul Gem when Kirika lunged. I'm uncertain as to how finely his sight allows him to respond preemptively, and likewise am uncertain how KIrika's... time slowing? allowed her to appear to accelerate, or whether that's an innate speed there.

Either way, that means Gilgamesh may be just as surprised as the rest of us if something Happens. Particularly with the various local effects (e.g. Kirika's presumed Berserkerlot) affecting his Sight.

(Alternatively, his Sight showed him that Kirika was going to threaten but not immediately follow through, and so while he needed to respond with equal threat, he did not want to show his hand with regards to his ability to react quickly enough to stop her. Either way, we may not want to rely on Gilgamesh for warning against surprise actions.)

Other things: Does anyone more well-versed in the Nasuverse know if it contains anything that might be able to serve as a soul-powered Witch-killing device? Apparently O&K haven't been feeding their Servants meguca souls as portable snacks for powerups, for all that it's definitely a possibility we still need to be on the lookout for, but a mysterious 'item' isn't reassuring either. Either it's a weapon or it's something that's been behaving in a diagnostic manner and saying 'k dudez we need 20+ soulllls stat for world saving hero justice shit you get me?', and that's not an item that I'm too pleased to potentially be hearing from.

... I'll want to work out a bit more of an idea what to maybe do actively- having both Servants out of sight is not filling me with warm and fuzzies either- but for the moment...

[x] (telepathically to Archer) Ask if he knows of any items that could require souls to power them that could be used as powerful superwitch-killing weapons.

That's not a complete vote, just something I think we need to do. I'll try and add something about lines of argument to prepare for after I finish dinner...

Ah, right- and we were given

That Mikuni Oriko has chosen her own residence as the place of meeting means that she does not intend to fight you here. She may attempt to do so later, possibly even as soon as you are a safe distance away, but for the duration of your talk you and Tomoe-san shall be safe from harm.

which... is interesting to note, and possibly an indicator that Gilgamesh saw the same thing, and was just avoiding showing his hand with regard to reaction time (precog-aided or otherwise). In a meta-sense it seems like an indicator of some level of safety, which I guess is good to avoid hair-triggering ever updoot of this meeting.

On the other hand, I don't remember if it's just PMAS canon and not canon-canon, but doesn't Oriko have Issues with her house, what with her dad and his death and (presumably) finding his body and also the general populace harassing her there? I have not actually read all the Oriko-focused side material that would answer these questions. Hm. Oh, actually, that would just be mean- if that house contains Oriko's Dad's Diary, and Kirika hasn't found (and possibly burned) it yet, flinging that in front of her face might cause at least Oriko to be downgraded as a threat. On the other hand then we'd have an enragement mode Kirika, Lancer, and presumed-Berserkerlot in our faces without Oriko to get them to calm the fuck down, probably. And that's a cruel thing to throw in front of even your enemies. So, uh. Maybe not. @SVS do you have any word on the state of said Diary and the effects it might have, if found? (Probably a bad idea, but I'm curious.) (Not even sure how we'd get it, but then, they're not all home all the time, but then, homes are ostensibly safe, possibly even for them, so it might be a bad plan for practical reasons in that regard...) (Link to the known translation of said diary.)

In regards to the issue of Oriko continuing to live in the house that daddy's money bought, it's more that she's willing to put up with any issues that may arise out of sheer practicality. It's a fairly large place, which means that she can comfortably house herself, Kirika, and their servants, without there being any issues or glaring breaches of privacy- Being especially important when you're planning to save the world by killing large amounts of small children.

And since I haven't had the pleasure of reading Sadness Prayer yet since finding a halfway-decent English translation just isn't worth the effort most of the time, for simplicity's sake we're going to say that the diary is a nonissue. Oriko and Kirika are far from bastions of mental stability, but they don't have any big red buttons we can conveniently press to break them down.

Updated vote for now

[x] Continue letting Mami lead your side of negotiations. It's her that you want convinced of Oriko and Kirika's intentions; you already know how this is going to end, one way or another.
[x] (telepathically to Archer) Ask if he knows of any items that could require souls to power them that could be used as powerful superwitch-killing weapons. Alternatively, items in general that require souls as power, weapons or not.
-[x] Also ask whether he can see any traps on the perimeter of the area; while you suspect that Oriko and Kirika do not intend to attack you during the meeting, on their property as it is, they may have something planned for when you exit. Anything that you can determine ahead of time would be to your advantage.
-[x] Keep him appraised of the meeting, particularly this mysterious item when it's brought out.
[X] Otherwise, remain silent and listen intently while being aware of surroundings. And any potential side effects of the tea.
[X] Interject and speak when necessary (next vote after we know more)
[X] Be ready to timestop if necessary, and dodge Kirika even within timestop. Just because you think they won't attack during the meeting proper doesn't mean you should let your guard down, as Kirika's little show of temper just now proves.

An extension of the last vote, mostly, since we're still in information gathering mode.

Edit: Uh, wait, I've forgot, we... we did lichbomb Archer, right? And- oh. Oh shit, forget the Witchbomb, Mami's about to Lichbombed if Oriko's going to be showing off their presumably-soul-powered-'item'. That's... And I'm pretty sure we didn't lichbomb her.

Heh, I fell into the same sort of trap as Oriko's conflation of Walpurgisnacht with the End Of The World- her mentioning the gemming/death/murderlyzing of all those meguca, and then bringing out a mysterious item in connection to her Grand Plans. They may actually not be connected that way.

And- um. Wait does Homura know the meguca have just been murder-gemmed and not shatter-murdered? I have completely forgotten if that has been given over to her. @SVS was that something she knows? Otherwise she's not even in the position to make my same wild suppositions about soul-powered weapons, which means a change of tract... Sorry about this.

Archer knows the witchbomb, but not the lichbomb. Mami knows neither. Gilgamesh can be presumed to know both. Homura does not know in what state the other girls have been murdered; whether it's just their meaty sacks that have been mangled or if the Soul Gems themselves were casualties to the murdering.

Hm. Okay. Well, then. Bit of a change, I guess, adding some thoughts...

You've never heard of using magical girls to power other magic like this, but in this strange timeline, with its Servants and its more powerful enemies, you're reluctant to dismiss it.)

@SVS, does this work as a vote, within the information constraints as known?

Either of them would have worked, it's just a matter of whether Homura considers human sacrifice as a possibile option or not. The latter of the two is more comprehensive, certainly, but either one will work fine.

All of one vote - well, three votes, all from the same person - in a 24 hour period. But damn is it a big one, and I think I can work with this. Let's do it.

You don't like the way in which Mikuni Oriko asked for her item, and you like even less that neither her servant nor the servant of Kure Kirika are visible. You have a very bad feeling about the way things are proceeding.

"Archer, how are things looking on your end?"

"About the same as before. I saw the almost-scuffle between Gilgamesh and Kure; I'm surprised you didn't give the order then."

"I was strongly considering it, but that's not why I've contacted you."

"Oh? Well, what's the real reason for this call, then?"

"Do you know of any... Items, which would require souls for power? Maybe a weapon of some kind; something that would be useful in fighting a witch?"

"I've run afoul of... Well, I hesitate to call them 'people', but they were using some pretty nasty magecraft that relied heavily on the use of souls; as well, servants can consume souls to gain energy, should they have no other means of obtaining energy. But neither of those things are items, per se. Why?"

"Mikuni Oriko's plan involves some kind of item; she's having Lancer bring it to her now. I was hoping you might be able to tell me what we were in for before it arrived."

"I'm afraid I can't help you there, master."

"What about human sacrifice? I'm not entirely sure that the dismembered bodies were done so haphazardly; it may have been intentional. Can you think of any items that would require a mangled body as a magical component?"

"There was a master in the Fifth Grail War who used the body of another servant as the catalyst to summon his own, and blood and human bodies can be used as components in magecraft, but I can't say I know of any item in particular that would require human sacrifice. Again, sorry."

"No, it's fine. Just keep your eyes open. If you see anything, let me know."

"Will do, master."

Lancer returns as you terminate your call to Archer, lugging a large, old wooden chest behind her. With a resounding thud she plants the chest atop the table, stepping aside as her master takes center stage. "Tomoe-san, Akemi-san; allow me to demonstrate to you my commitment to the salvation of the world." She unhooks the latches, opening the chest up as you and Tomoe-san wait on baited breath.

Soul Gems.

There is no surprise item within the chest, no secret soul-powered anti-witch weapon. Rather, a collection of Soul Gems have been carefully arranged inside individual fabric-lined pockets. Most are intact and still possessed of a healthy glow - they're still alive - but three have been drained of their colour and their jewelled facets marred with many hairline cracks.

"I... I don't understand, Mikuni-san. Why... Why save the Soul Gems of the girls that you've killed? What purpose could they serve?"

"Power," is Mikuni Oriko's reply. And then it dawns on you. "The Soul Gem of a puella magi is a conduit of magical energy that burns brighter than even the sun. A single Soul Gem holds within it a vast amount of magical power. With it, a master can provide a tremendous boost to the fighting capacity of their servant."

Clearly, if the malevolent grin on Mikuni Oriko's face is any indication, that isn't all. "In addition, by stripping a Soul Gem of the unique properties by which a puella magi can be made into a master..." Mikuni Oriko's left hand goes to the cuff of her right sleeve, and she pulls the fabric down to her elbow. The entirety of her right arm, from wrist to elbow, is covered in a jagged crisscross of crimson scars... No, not scars. "... I can obtain a near-limitless supply of Command Seals, with which to provide additional power to Lancer."

"With these Soul Gems at my disposal, there is enough power at my fingertips for Lancer to defeat Walpurgisnacht with ease."

Tomoe-san slumps down in her chair, completely speechless. Her eyes have gone dark, as she frantically tries to blink away the forming tears. You doubt she will be of much more use to you in this dialogue. "Archer, did you get all of that?"

"I wish I hadn't."

"The both of you seem in shock. Rest assured, though my methods seem inhumane, I am actually doing these girls a favour by using their souls in such a manner. Had I left them be, they would have perished, sooner or later, completely forgotten by an uncaring world. But, by serving as the source of power for the plan that will save the world, their names shall be remembered forever."

"Tamaki Iroha, Nanami Yachiyo, Yui Tsuruno, Futaba Sana, Mitsuki Felicia, Minami Rena, Togame Momoka," Mikuni Oriko rattles off a list of names, pointing to a Soul Gem as she recites the name of the puella magi to whom it once belonged. "Momoe Nagisa, Akino Kaede, Tatsuki Asuka, Yayoi Kanoko, Utsuho Natsuki, Miyako Hinano, Yuuki Sasa, Asako Komaki, Hitomi Lina, Saki Minako, Akane Mai, Masumi Chihana."

"I remember the names of each and every puella magi whose Soul Gem I have taken for my own, and their sacrifice shall not be forgotten."

"... That... That's only nineteen," Tomoe-san murmurs. You're surprised that she's even thinking straight right now, let alone that she was able to follow along and keep track of how many names were given. "That's only nineteen... But... But there were twenty girls that were murdered..."

"That is correct, Tomoe-san; I have the blood of nineteen puella magi on my hands."

"But... But there were twenty murders..."

"Correct," comes a most unwelcome voice from beyond the shadows. "Mikuni Oriko is only responsible for the dismemberment of nineteen puella magi. The body of Chitose Yuma was found three days ago dismembered in a back alley in Kazamino. I was not present to see what happened, but I believe that you humans would describe the aftermath as 'gruesome'. Her chest and ribcage had been surgically sliced open and her heart was missing, and her Soul Gem was shattered in several pieces on the ground beside her. I could overlook the broken Soul Gem; accidents do happen when one is so young, but I had been left to question the origin of the three crimson markings that adorned the back of her right hand."

Chitose Yuma... So, she had been a master too, for a short while at least. But how did she meet her end, if Mikuni Oriko wasn't the responsible party? Could it have been her own servant, turning against her? "Archer, how likely is it that a servant would turn against their master?"

"It's... More common than I'd like to tell you. Servants often have their own agendas separate from those of their masters, and if those agendas come into conflict..."

"I see. Thank you."

So, now the Incubator has decided to join in the discussion. That is... Probably one of the worst possible things that could have happened, short of a fight breaking out. "However, I believe that I now have the answer for which I have been searching." And he now knows about the servant system. This is bad.

Well howdy fuck. That's... Unexpected. Hey, @SVS, Oriko was pointing as she was naming; who are the three perma-dead meguca in the box?

But, damn. You did good in how you wrote that up, with the way you began the new paragraph listing the names. The shock of how the heck did Oriko get her hands on them, in specific, worked very well there- starting out with a stack of familiar names that I had not expected to get dragged into this. A special kinda taking the breath away from me- I cannot applaud you enough for the setup for that.

Mngh, if there comes a time when we can recover the box with anyone left intact, we miiiight need to tentatively probe Asunaro or something, to see about making new bodies for this lot. Assuming Archer doesn't have something in his magic marble of tricks, or if Homura doesn't have experience in regenerating a meguca from her gem. (Also assuming Asunaro isn't batshit insane already.)

But, holy crap, okay. So we knew Nagisa was canned- frankly, at least for her specifically, this is probably a better outcome for her (very, very marginally), since she hasn't Witched; if she's among the perma-dead, then at least she never had the experience of Witching (and also learning her wish's mistake), which as far as I know is objectively actually completely awful, and if she's not among the perma-dead, then she's neither experienced Witching, nor, well, death. I mean, the trauma of being body-murderlyzed probably isn't great, but if she's recoverable... Mngh, and as far as we know, gemmed meguca are insensate (evidence: Sayaka, in canon), unless command-seal-swiping causes complications to that state, which could happen...

'Course that leaves eighteen other meguca in various states of THIS IS NOT BETTER going around here.

Nobody is gonna be particularly pleased if we manage to pull them outta that box and back to life. Though they might be willing to team up and murderlyze the faces outta Oriko and Kirika, assuming they're still a problem by that point.

Nasuverse notes about souls say some interesting things- one of which being that, depending on what's happened in this section of the timelines thusfar, the Dress of Heaven could be used to put meguca souls back into their human bodies. Probably. Depending on what else Kyubey has done with them. (... There are some mages that would probably give their literal firstborns in order to get a good look at what the hell the Incubators have been doing that replicates Third Magic in that manner.)

Arrgh, and we do not want to let the Soujus anywhere near this situation if they're in line to turn up- well, actually, baiting the Soujus into going up against Oriko and Kirika, so O&K can deal with the Soujus for us and every other meguca in Japan, might not actually be a bad idea. That would give O&K more ammunition, lose us some moral high ground, and involve making contact with the Soujus, though. Maybe no. Also, Oriko is a precog who would see through that charade in an instant, though she might just elect to take the free soul gems- ah. The Soujus have a collection of their own, nevermind, we don't want to double or more the number of souls O&K have on hand, nevermind that.

... actually, @SVS, since we're also acting as Archer's boss, can we know- which model of the soul are we working with in this setting? In PMMM canon there's apparently a legit afterlife, for both non-meguca, and also meguca- the latter presumably being folded into the former in the pre-Madokami world, in cases when the gem is shattered instead of being a grief seed in Kyubey's possession. This implies the persistence of souls. On the other hand, the Nasuverse appears to be a bit... iffier... about the matter, given souls-as-described-in-relation-to-mages-and-the-Third-Magic as dissolving back into Akasha-or-something upon death, versus the implications of the various gods and their presumably-extant afterlives. So are the

three have been drained of their colour and their jewelled facets marred with many hairline cracks.

literally destroyed souls, dissolved to fuel whatever the hell Oriko did- would a Servant eating a soul be dissolving/destroying them? Or is it more like stripping some magical bullshit attached to the soul that lends it its power, and then sending the base part of the soul off somewhere else? Or like a hydroelectric dam, where you can sort of push the soul along certain channels, and take advantage of some byproduct of the process (i.e. whatever energy the soul has on it)? Do the souls of the dead specifically dissolve back into Akasha, or is there a coherent afterlife, or are coherent afterlives specifically generated by god-level beings?

Just kinda want to have all the context we can have for this.

As for Yuma... this troubles me.

Known Servants are Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, and presumably-Berserker.. Remaining are Saber and Assassin. Sayaka would almost certainly get Saber, and she's still in the running until she contracts- Yuma, then, would have Assassin, which does fit with the previous hint about unexpected-but-when-you've-got-the-rest-that's-what's-left.

First of all- in how many timelines does Yuma contract specifically for Kyouko? Like, is it a statistical anomaly for her to contract for other reasons? We... well, Kazamino was brought up by name here, we have justification, so we'll want to be sending Archer to ask Kyouko whether she's missing a Yuma, I guess- though if she is, she didn't let on in the meeting just before now. It's not impossible, though- assuming we survive leaving this meeting, we should go ask. Uh, sensitively. And non-accusatively.

So, Yuma's been really-really murderlyzed. With

I was not present to see what happened, but I believe that you humans would describe the aftermath as 'gruesome'. Her chest and ribcage had been surgically sliced open, and her Soul Gem was shattered in several pieces on the ground beside her.

as the description. My first thought is Jack- I'm debating asking whether Kyubey noticed whether Yuma's heart was taken, because Jack eats hearts, and they're full of magic and tastiness and whatnot. Possibly the shattered Soul Gem would also be a byproduct of doing the whole Servant-consuming-a-soul-for-power thing. And Jack has previously decided that her master was Not A Good and to take a different one instead- there's precedent. This... doesn't really sound like any of the other assassins, really? Maybe Carmilla? Or maybe Hyde, technically? Certainly none of the Sabers fit, unless we have Gilles de Rais having arrived just in time to flip his shit. But Jack seems like the best thematic fit as well as any sort of precedent at all for killing one's Master- though I'm extremely curious what led to this sort of happening. Unless something else killed Yuma, and Jack just ate her heart/soul afterwards, like, politely. That is an option.

Mngh. But that was an unexpected and very interesting turn-

And Kyubey now has intel on the Servant system. Lovely. And O&K have extra command seals- mngh, I don't remember enough of the specific times anyone in Fate has had to deal with fighting someone with Extra Command Seals Everywhere to think of how to proceed quite yet.

Gonna wait on those answers about the state of Souls and also the names of the perma-dead meguca before trying to come up with a vote.

But seriously, nice job.
