[x] Keep up the search; it's only two more locations

Thats a girl-kyubey thing tho

Kyubeys don't have genders... I think. Clearly it's just a human-Kyubey thing, that has left such concepts like gender behind, relegated to the realm of the depressed lesbians and weeaboo fightan' ghosts of the thread.

Day 9 Chapter 9
[x] Keep up the search; it's only two more locations

Your master has left the decision up to you as to whether or not to head home. You've already defeated a witch and secured her Grief Seed, so even if you were to head home right now, your mission would still be a success. But there are still two more locations you wanted to check out, so you're going to do just that. No sense in only doing a half-assed job.

The next stop on your list is the large highway overpass just north of your current position, the one running alongside the river. Even at this hour of the night, it's got lots of traffic, and with it being so high up and so close to the river, you can easily imagine that it's the sort of spot where the more suicidally-inclined might choose to jump. It seems like a sensible place for a witch to make their lair, unlike, say, putting one right next to the Goddamn cotton candy machine.

Actually, that too makes a disturbing amount of sense. The witch cast its net where small children will frequent, knowing that they would be helpless before the power of its attraction curse. It's a good thing you took care of it when you did.

Thankfully, the overpass is clear of witches, but it's a location you'll want to remember later on, you think. That leaves only one place left to check. Rather, you suppose it isn't so much "one place"; while it wouldn't be impossible to case the entirety of Mitakihara's uptown before sunup, it would be time-consuming on a monstrous scale. Instead, you're going to make the best observations that you can while passing through Uptown on your way back to your master.

There are a few skyscrapers you can easily hop between that give you a good enough view of the majority of Uptown as you work your way back to your master. So far, everything seems to be in the clear; no witches, and no sign of either Lancer or Berserker...

It appears you spoke too soon. As you scan Uptown from atop a skyscraper to the north of the hospital, you can see down below the distinct armoured form of Lancer, with her long, snow-white hair spreading out behind her like feathered wings. She's holding Gungnir in one hand, while giving her master a bloodstained Soul Gem with the other. Their bodies are positioned in such a way that you can't quite make out the identity of the girl the pair have just mutilated, but with how uncomfortably close the pair are to your master's apartment, you have to check to make sure the worst hasn't occurred.

"Master, are you there?"

"Yes I am. Did you need something?"

"I found Lancer and her master standing over a fresh kill. They're far too close to you for my comfort, so I just had to check to make sure you were safe."

"You aren't strong enough to defeat Lancer in a close confrontation. You should withdraw immediately."

Your master says that, but from this height and this distance you should be able to take them both out with a precision strike.

Do you

[ ] Disobey your master and attack

I shall serve
"... Come forth from the circle of binding, guardian of scales!" Mikuni Oriko finished her chant, right hand held stretched out as three sigils burned themselves into the back of her right hand. Her gaze fixed firmly ahead, she waited for the smoke to clear, revealing to her the form of the hero whom she had summoned.

That figure was tall and pale, a fragile appearance in stark contrast to the ornate purple armour she wore. And her voice was soft, yet firm as she spoke the words "Servant Lancer has answered your summons. Are you my master?"

Those words... Words that Lancer had not spoken in what must have been a lifetime. The memory of that man, Nigel Sayward, who had been her master in the First Holy Grail War... But the person before her was not the master that had summoned her last. Rather, her master was a young girl, with warm, emerald eyes and long, ash-white hair. Beside her stood a second girl, with eyes like fire reflected through amber glass, and chocolate-brown hair that fell only to her chin.

"I am," her master replied, stepping forward and introducing herself as "Mikuni Oriko, and this is my partner, Kure Kirika."

"Am I to assume that I shall serve two masters in this War?"

The first girl nodded, holding her right hand out as she spoke the words of command. "Lancer, by my first command, I order you; you are to follow without hesitation any order given to you by Kure Kirika as though it were given to you by myself." As her Command Seals flashed red and the first of the three thorn-studded vines faded, Lancer felt the power of the order wash over her.

Normally, such a vague command would be impossible to enforce, and likely it was that her master knew this. But behind those words were such a strong sense of conviction, that Lancer could see no reason to disobey it. "Very well. Master Mikuni, Mistress Kure, what would you have me do?"

Blood. As the daughter of the chiefest of all the gods, Lancer was no stranger to the sight of spilled blood. But the machinations of her master and mistress always lusted for more, more, more. It started with one, a single girl they had identified as being a problem to their plans in the future. Lancer had eviscerated her without hesitation. Then two, then three, then seven, all in the span of one night.

Tonight would mark the twelfth time since Lancer was summoned that Gungnir would be stained in the blood of a puella magi. The girl had put up a better struggle than most, and by the appearance of Command Seals on her hand, she had come quite close to summoning the last servant of this War. Allowing the Saber servant to be summoned would put her and her master at a disadvantage, and she had been ordered to remove the offending sigils before Saber could be summoned. Soul Gem, stock of Grief Seeds, and Commands Seals alike, Lancer delivered to her master.

"Lancer," her master said, gazing up at the heavens. "Prepare for battle. We have company."

While we do need to kill them, we can't go against them alone right after killing a witch. And sniping won't work since they also detected us. (IC, we need backup, especially when they have an excess of command seals to summon Berserker or empower themselves). However, there is a chance of them following us and fighting Homura at our home, so we need to contact Caster and Mami as soon as possible in that case.

Your master says that, but from this height and this distance you should be able to take them both out with a precision strike. ... Or, maybe following her order would be the wiser course of action. She knows these girls and what they're capable of better than you do, and on top of that, you're pretty sure that Mikuni just spotted you. Even without her precognition, any chance you had of surprising her vanished the moment she had visual contact. So now it's time for you too to vanish.

You assume spirit form and do your best to double back the way that you came. On the likely chance that Lancer and her master give pursuit, you won't be leading them directly to your master's apartment.

"I've got bad news. I'm pretty sure that Lancer and her master spotted me."

"Where are you right now?"

"I saw them taking down another puella magi only a few blocks from your apartment. I'm currently heading east away from the hospital in an attempt to lead them away from you."

"Do you need assistance?"

"Unless you've managed to figure out how to make your Projections stick and can use them in combat effectively, then no. I know you mean well, master, but right now your presence would be more of a hindrance than anything else."

"... I meant, do you want me to contact Tomoe-san and have her send Caster over to assist you?"

"Contact her, yes. She should know what happened here."
You've beaten your retreat as far eastward as possible, and are now standing atop the tallest building you could manage to find by the river's edge. You've got your eyes trained on Lancer and her master, and fortunately, they don't appear to be making any moves to give pursuit. Rather, they appear to be... Oh, no.

"I've contacted Tomoe-san and relayed your report to her. She and Caster are on their way to take care of things."

Do you
[ ] Tell your master to have Tomoe-san and Caster retreat; they're about to wander straight into a trap
[ ] Place your faith in Caster and say nothing; even if they've set a trap, Lancer can't beat Gilgamesh
[ ] Other (write-in)

[X] Tell Homura to warn Mami that team Lancer are readying themselves for them.
-[X] Provide fire support to disrupt any ambush attempt

Gilgamesh may be strong, but he's not infallible. Depending on the trap, they may be able to keep him busy with one servant while another ganks him. No need to take this much of a risk. Without Caster, we're thoroughly fucked.

EDIT: Vote changed since Macros is correct. Taking out the precog as soon as possible should be prioritised. Any time we give them will only tip the advantage their way. Counter-ganking them might be the best idea. But then again, precog means they might know of our counter-gank and counter us in turn... I hate fighting precogs.

While I hear you... I'm not sure we can afford to delay a confrontation again and again. Let's face it, we'll never get a favourable battleground, not against someone with precog. At some point, we'll have to take a gamble, or risk finding Madoka or Sayaka dead while we were busy elsewhere, and hoping we can engage in a battle without taking risks strikes me as too optimistic.

Now, a case could be made to try to wait until Homura is better at Projection. Problem is, we don't know how long that would take - and if we play our cards right, she can still be useful on the battlefield right now. Sure, Servants are a bit too resistant to her damage and Kirika is immune to timestop now, but with Mami's ribbons, we can put our whole team in timestop, which would still be a pretty big combat boost.

Good point. Maybe we can try to get Rider and Sayaka as allies instead of being passive?

Well, Kyoko and Rider as allies would be good, that's for sure, but it's hard to make it happen. Ideally, what I'd hope for is that Archer tracks down Assassin's location, then we sick team Kyoko on it, provide support, and hope it creates enough good-will to make her willing to help.

Problem is, of course, it depends of a lot of things over which we have no control.

As for Sayaka... well, I think we can count her as an ally right now. Real question is, do we want to risk her contracting? I mean, on one hand, she seems to be in a good mental place right now. On the other hand, historically she fares really poorly as a magical girl. If she ends up summoning Saber, it might help stabilize her... depending of which Saber she gets. If she summons someone she's utterly disapproving off, it can go really poorly really fast. Now, most Sabers are rather upstanding citizens, but correct me if I'm wrong, not quite all of them.

Now obviously, your definition of "upstanding citizen" will probably vary a lot depending on historical context and who's speaking. Your average Christian in 1st Century Rome isn't going to be calling Umu upstanding. The average Briton in the 5th Century would probably call you daft if you said that Best Girl was upstanding, and depending on how you leaned you might not even think Seibah was upstanding either. And while we're still in 5th Century Britain, you can say what you will about his qualities as a knight, but as a person Lancelot was utterly vile and you can't really fight that.

But yes, generally, you are correct in that Sabers are usually the most upstanding class of servant. They're the traditional "hero" archetype, complete with the cool magic sword and literal shining armour.

Also, you're probably right considering that Gilles can be summoned as a Saber.

Gilles as a Saber is who he was when he was Maréchal de France and leading armies alongside Jeanne. Sure, as a servant he's tormented by what his future self has done/will do, but the hero of the 100 Years War is not Bluebeard, not yet. He's still an upstanding citizen by pretty much any account, unless you're English.

Now obviously, your definition of "upstanding citizen" will probably vary a lot depending on historical context and who's speaking.

I didn't meant that in a literal sense, you know... (plus, I suspect Sayaka's definition of upstanding citizen is heavily influenced by Rule of Cool anyway) :V

Well, you did say "correct me if I'm wrong", so I took that as an invitation to put on my Glasses of Supreme Pedantry (patent pending)

Why isn't there a 'roll your eyes' tag again? :eyeroll:

Anyway, vote. Okay, I'm going to support a riskier course of action for now.

[X] Tell Homura to warn Mami that team Lancer are readying themselves for them.

You know it occurs to me that the Saber who would be best for Sayaka's personal character development is probably rather different than the Saber who would be best for keeping Sayaka alive in this very specific circumstance during which she is also an inexperienced meguca and we're fighting the O&K coalition and there's no actual Grail War specifically, and suchforth. Not that I'm certain which Servants would specifically fit either of those roles at the moment, but like.

Whether she's better for Sayaka's character development or for her overall survivability, hopefully you all enjoy the Saber that I've chosen to be her partner in the 2011 Murder Death Kill should we ever find ourselves crossing that threshold.

Now, what's the best way to approach writing this battle? A pair of omakes, each depicting one half of the battle as told from Mami's and Oriko's perspectives, or a long-take from Archer from the perspective of him performing overwatch?
