Confringentur 2; a Madoka Magica / Fate/Stay Night sequel

Day 4 Chapter 3
[X] Plan Madoka Gets Some New Bling (Asking Kirika Edition)

An embarrassed "Eep!" escapes Madoka's throat as Sayaka pushes her towards you, encouraging her to "Come on, Madoka, out with it. I'm sure she'll understand," as she gives you a sly wink. Oh yes, Sayaka is definitely up to something troublesome.

"Um, Homura-chan I... I was wondering..." Madoka stumbles over her own words, until another encouraging push from Sayaka prompts the words to come to her. "I was wondering if you'd let me wear your Soul Gem for a little bit," Madoka says. "Sayaka-chan says Kyouko sometimes lets her wear hers when it's just the two of them, and I kind of wanted to know what it felt like, so..."

"Of course I'll let you wear it," you say to Madoka. You made your wish for her sake, after all; why wouldn't you trust her with all of yourself? While Madoka smiles, you remove the silver ring from your left hand, carefully passing it over to her. "Archer, I'm about to do something that's either really romantic, or really stupid. Can you please watch over Madoka for me, in case the Saints try to do something?"

"What's stopping it from being both?"

You don't have an answer to give to Archer, so your silence will have to do. Gently, Madoka slides the ring over her finger. The result is instantaneous. As soon as your Soul Gem is seated on Madoka's finger, your entire body is enveloped in a radiant warmth. If you didn't know any better, you might have thought you had come down with a fever. "It's so warm," she says, holding her hand out so you and she can admire how your Soul Gem sits on her finger. You have to force your mind to calm itself as you see the silver band on Madoka's finger. It's not hers. She isn't a puella magi in this timeline. Madoka is safe. "What does it feel like for you, Homura-chan?"

"Warm," doesn't begin to describe how it feels for you. "It's... A very intimate sensation, almost like you're hugging my soul." You wonder if this is how Kyouko feels when she lets Sayaka wear her Soul Gem. You're sure Oriko and Kirika are already intimately familiar with the same sensation.

Madoka nods her head, saying "You look a little flushed, actually. Do you feel alright?"

"I feel fine."

You must not look fine. In fact, you must look worse than Madoka made you out to be. "You're looking rather flushed today, Akemi. Maybe this time you've finally come down with something serious enough to warrant being in my office?" As always, Nurse Ortensia's words to you as you enter her office take their typical form. This time, at least, her words have more merit than most.

"Actually, I feel fine." A little warmer than usual, sure; you feel like you could conjure the full might of your Isa rune in the nude, and be completely unaffected. But aside from that you feel fine.

"You don't look fine." A turning page directs your eye to the corner, where you see Assassin reading an equestrian magazine, but a different one from the one she was reading yesterday. "It's the best I could do to keep her from getting bored and making a scene," Nurse Ortensia says as she hands you your pill and a cup of water. "If a handful of horse rags and a couple of monthly subscriptions keep her from making me waste Command Seals, then it's money well spent."

"I hope you don't mind me asking, but why equestrian magazines?"

"In life, my horse and chariot were my most prized possessions," Assassin replies, not bothering to look up from her magazine as she responds to you. "Were I summoned in the Rider class, they would have been my strongest Noble Phantasm, but that one-" Assassin, not deigning to respect her master with even a courtesy glance her way, points to Nurse Ortensia with her foot. "-decided to force me into this worthless class vessel instead. If I cannot have my horse, I can at least admire the horses which are beloved by others."

You nod. You aren't much of a horse person yourself, but you know how it feels to be denied the thing you love most dearly. Returning to Nurse Ortensia, you say to her "I was actually hoping you might be able to tell me about homunculi. You were surprised to hear that Hijiri Kanna was one, but not surprised that such a thing was possible, leading me to believe you've at least heard of them before. How much do you know about them?"

"Only what the Church has given me. They're not uncommon; any decent mage can make one, even if it takes real talent to make one worth talking about. Most have pretty simple personalities; kind of like the one Tomoe is keeping, no? She doesn't seem to know much, and doesn't seem capable of much beyond answering some basic questions. Whoever created her must not have been very skilled when it came to crafting a personality." Nurse Ortensia shrugs, adding "If you want to know more, why not ask Tohsaka? She probably knows more than I do."

You weren't planning on asking. You care more about knowing what the deal is with Hijiri Kanna specifically. Hitomi is the one on whose behalf you were asking. "Well, thank you for what you were able to tell me," you say.

With your body turned towards the door, Nurse Ortensia doesn't see you tug at your shirt collar as you exit. But Madoka does. "Are you feeling okay, Homura-chan? You're still pretty red, and-" Madoka places a hand on your forehead. "You're so warm, too. Do you think you have a fever?"

"I'm fine, Madoka. You're just... Very warming to my soul, that's all."

"Well, if you think you're okay..."

"Are you sure you're feeling alright Homura?" Sayaka asks as you sit down at the cafeteria table with the others. "You've been, like, really red all day."

You want to sigh. Your classmates have been asking you how you were feeling all morning. But you don't sigh, because you know Sayaka - just like all of them - are just concerned for you. "Yes, Sayaka, I really am feeling fine."

"Alright, just checking." Sayaka, despite your protests, continues to look on you with concern. "It's just, Kyouko usually doesn't get as red as you." As Madoka did when you exited Nurse Ortensia's office, Sayaka touches her hand to your forehead. "Or as hot. Seriously, you're like, burning up."

You do your best to put Sayaka's worries to rest, but you know they'll probably return later in the day. As Madoka sits down beside you, you ask her "So, what did Amy send you this morning?"

"Oh!" Madoka takes out her phone, showing you the gibberish Amy's absentminded batting of your phone had sent to her. "I thought you were having a stroke or something, but once you told me Amy was texting me instead I thought it was kind of cute." You don't see it. Then again, you can't make heads or tails of Amy's gibberish. "Do you think she'd like to text me again some time?"

"Maybe." You force yourself to swallow; Madoka's lips look so soft, so kissable, but you don't want to cause a scene by kissing her in public. Not that you could cause a scene in private, either, seeing as you're still unable to bring yourself to kiss Madoka with any more passion than usual. But maybe there's someone who can help you with that. "Hey, can I ask you a question?"

"I'd prefer you didn't, since I'm trying to have lunch with Oriko, but fine, ask away."

"Sorry."
You knew Kirika doesn't have much time to spend with Oriko, between her after-school job and her abundance of homework. You should hav eknown she wouldn't like being disturbed during one of the few moments she has with her girlfriend. "It's just, you've got more relationship experience than anyone else I know, and I was hoping you could help me."

You can almost see Kirika's eyes roll, but to her credit she says "Okay, I'll share my secrets with you. Come on, tell Big Sis what's wrong. You and Pinkie have a fight, or something?"

"No, nothing like that. I, um, lately I've been wanting to..."
This was a terrible idea. Kirika was the one who traumatised you in the first place, after what she said to you that day in the cafeteria. Why are you going to her for advice, when you know she'll just do the same to you again? "... Move our relationship to the next level. I know you and Oriko are... Much further ahead than we are, so I was wondering if you could share some relationship insights with me."

"Well, that kind of depends on what 'the next level' is for you two. Are you thinking you want to go all the way or something? I need to know what I'm working with."

"Well, I..."
Oh gods above, why is this so embarrassing for you to just come out and say it? "I want to use my tongue when we're kissing. What was it like the first time you and Oriko did that?"

Several long moments pass before Kirika is able to respond, with a single word. "What." It's not a question. "Are you freaking serious? You and Pinkie have been together for eighteen months now and you two still haven't made out yet? Gods above, Homura, are you a lesbian or a dying sloth? Because at the rate you're going, you're slow enough to be the latter."

"I've just been trying to respect Madoka's boundaries. She hasn't brought it up, so I haven't tried to press things with her."

The exasperated sigh Kirika unleashes on your mind is loud enough to break glass. "Listen Homura, you... You're going about this all wrong." Well, that was the reason you went to Kirika for advice in the first place. "You're trying to overthink something you don't need to overthink. The first time me and Oriko made out, we just kinda... Did it. We didn't sit around and talk about wanting to kiss, we didn't wait until the other person was comfortable with it, we just read what our bodies wanted to do and let it happen naturally. That's what you're missing. You're overthinking this stuff. You don't have to talk to Pinkie about wanting to kiss her or anything like that. Just read the mood and wait for the right moment."

Part of you wants to protest. Back then, you had tried to read the mood, but every time it looked like you and Madoka would kiss, her skittishness at giving away her first kiss got the better of her. What proof do you have that more passionate kissing would be any different? "Maybe that kind of thing is just easier for you, given how well your Element and Origin are attuned to love-related stuff."

"Maybe you just need to not be afraid of intimacy."
You aren't afraid of intimacy. You're just traumatised by the things Kirika has told you about adult relationships, and by your own experience having to hear your parents' adult relationships in the room across from yours. Right? "Look, take my advice and start learning to read the mood. Or don't, it's up to you. I'm just been dating the same girl for over two years, what do I know?"

Do you
[ ] Accept Kirika's advice
[ ] Reject Kirika's advice

Do you bother telling Hitomi what you learned from Nurse Ortensia?
[ ] Yes
[ ] No

You've been feeling warm all morning. Are you sure you're alright?
[ ] It's probably nothing; keep doing what you're doing
[ ] Maybe you should take your Soul Gem back from Madoka now
[ ] Maybe you should go rest in the nurse's office

Stopping here for a few reasons. One, this was getting long and I don't like giving you guys eye-stabblingly long blocks of text. Two, I never got an answer from @Enetious to a degree of specificity I was comfortable with, so I'm stopping here while I wait for him to get back to me. If he gives me enough to work with, I can go back and rewrite our conversation with Caren to be more specific, because as it is right now we don't have much worth telling Hitomi. Third, Madoka is really warm. Maybe we want to do something about that.

Hmm, maybe having what is essentially a walking leyline hold our soul for a day wasn't our smartest idea?

Hmm, maybe having what is essentially a walking leyline hold our soul for a day wasn't our smartest idea?

Eh, but it was so cute/romantic/heroically idiotic.

I'd be for yes, yes, and take it back, but pay it with a kiss. Maybe try to lose ourself in the sensation; stop thinking, try to feel what's right.

More than a bit difficult for little Miss Overprepared, she who would make a fine Archer.
Also, maybe try to communicate with the Pink One, she of the overflowing empathy?

[x] Plan: Feeling Fine
-[x] Accept Kirika's advice
-[x] No
-[x] It's probably nothing; keep doing what you're doing
--[x] Tell Madoka you're fine.
---[x] Airily giggle for a reason totally unrelated to your current condition.

I'd be for yes, yes, and take it back, but pay it with a kiss. Maybe try to lose ourself in the sensation; stop thinking, try to feel what's right.

More than a bit difficult for little Miss Overprepared, she who would make a fine Archer.
Indeed. That's a rather tall order you're proposing, Homura just going with the flow and doing what feels right, instead of what's been meticulously labbed out by the people living inside her head over dozens of repetitions of that exact same scenario.
Also, maybe try to communicate with the Pink One, she of the overflowing empathy?
What sort of communication are you proposing? Do we have something in particular we want to say to Madoka? How do we say it? Spoken word, writing it down, smoke signals, semaphore flags, hand signs, caveman grunting? Maybe we just fling our poo at her like a monkey and hope she understands? They're all technically forms of communication, so you have to be specific, or people who think the worst of me will do what they do and expect me to give us the worst possible scenario for a given value.

Alright, Enetious has been gone for 24 hours. I hope this doesn't spell the worst, but we are going to need some more votes from the gallery if we want to keep moving. @PlaguePaladin, maybe offer us some advice on how to cure the imbalance in our humours that's clearly got us burning up. @Swedish15, maybe if you're not too butthurt at the Saints for blowing the church you could come down and bestow us with your wisdom. @WanderingTwix, if you've gotten a taste for the good stuff, maybe you want to try contributing again. @UNKNOWN01, maybe you want to be known again. Maybe someone else who hasn't contributed would also like to give it a try. I hear it's really fun.

I was early morning late night gaming with friends.
We do.
Do you bother telling Hitomi what you learned from Nurse Ortensia?
I'm not really sure what we're telling her. It's not like Ortensia gave us much info. Anyway, it should be fine to tell her. It's courtesy. We just have to make sure her BF doesn't die so she doesn't go evil trying to make a homunculus clone of him
You've been feeling warm all morning. Are you sure you're alright?
I'm not sure if this is dangerous, but it's clearly something, because as Sayaka said, Kyouko wasn't this red from having her soul gem worn by Sayaka. I'd go for taking the soul gem back, to play it on the safe side. Maybe at the next opportunity, we could have Archer analyse our soul gem while Madoka is wearing it to see if that gives us an answer? I guess he is watching us, so we could do that right now? Eh.

[X] Plan Love is a rollercoaster
-[X] Accept Kirika's advice
-[X] Yes
-[X] Maybe you should take your Soul Gem back from Madoka now

I'm not really sure what we're telling her. It's not like Ortensia gave us much info. Anyway, it should be fine to tell her. It's courtesy. We just have to make sure her BF doesn't die so she doesn't go evil trying to make a homunculus clone of him
As I said, Enetious's answer didn't give me the degree of specificity I was looking for, so all I could really go off was "she knows their general behaviour" and "they don't have much of a personality". I was hoping he'd stop by to give me a better answer, but here we are. I also feel like your struck-out portion is a subtle aside directed at me specifically.
but it's clearly something, because as Sayaka said, Kyouko wasn't this red from having her soul gem worn by Sayaka.
As NMS said here,
Hmm, maybe having what is essentially a walking leyline hold our soul for a day wasn't our smartest idea?
Madoka is a walking leyline. Kyouko isn't. Might have something to do with our more severe reaction.

I also feel like your struck-out portion is a subtle aside directed at me specifically.
That was referring to that little back and forth by people about Hitomi being the villain for Confringentur 3... which I can't find for some reason.
Madoka is a walking leyline. Kyouko isn't. Might have something to do with our more severe reaction.
Yeah, probably. We should clearly have someone else give their soul gem to Madoka. For uhh, science. Yeah. :V

That was referring to that little back and forth by people about Hitomi being the villain for Confringentur 3... which I can't find for some reason.
Oh. See, I took the whole thing of "Hitomi making a homunculus of her dead boyfriend" to be an aside directed at me for my use of the FMA'03 OST to flavour what the Saints are doing.

@PlaguePaladin, maybe offer us some advice on how to cure the imbalance in our humours that's clearly got us burning up.
Well going by Humorism, we clearly have an imbalance of the Red Blood humor (flushed skin, warm body, heightened emotions). Sayaka and Kyoko never had this problem because Kyoko has Fire as an element and Sayaka has Water as an element; these correspond to Yellow Bile and Phlegm respectively, which cancel each other out. This is because Yellow Bile has warm and dry properties, while phlegm has cold and moist properties. We need to find someone with an element of Earth, corresponding to Black Bile, which might cancel us out.

Or we could stop having Madoka wear us.

Yes, I researched Humorism just for the sake of this post. Humorism is kinda gross.

So question: why is it important that Hitomi knows more about Homunculi? It sounds like something we should be sharing with Mami instead since she's the one that's housing one.

Also is it weird that my first thought of Homura being warm is "The Saints are tracking our Soul Gem turn it off turn it off!"

So question: why is it important that Hitomi knows more about Homunculi? It sounds like something we should be sharing with Mami instead since she's the one that's housing one.
Hitomi is a mage, and she expressed an academic curiosity about the creation of artificial life. Then Enetious decided we should ask Caren what she knows, but now Enetious is maybe gone again, so who knows if that will ever be picked up again.

[X] Plan: I made this on the spot! (Alternate Title: Let's communicate with our friends and girlfriend!).
- [X] Accept Kirika's advice
- [X] Yes
- [X] Explain the situation to Madoka in a calm way, to make sure she doesn't feel like this is her fault and feels bad about it, and then ask for your Soul Gem from her.

Kanna may end up developing emotions ala Sieg, so it could be useful for Hitomi to know about Homunculi down the line; besides, Magi do Magi things!

PD: Also, Yes! I'm known again!

[X] UNKNOWN01

Eh, less butthurt, more sleep deprived, and I'm gettting called in to work early today. But @UNKNOWN01 thankfully shouldered the duty admirably.
@NMS - why deny Hitomi the knowledge? We need our sequel opponent to be at her best.

Day 4 Chapter 4
[X] Plan: Let's communicate with our friends and girlfriend

"You're overthinking this stuff.

You sigh; you wonder if Kirika can hear your internal sighing the way you can hear hers. "No, you're right," you say. "I guess I am overthinking things. I just... Don't really know how to let myself go with the flow, after all this time."

"Well, you'd better learn how, 'cause at the rate you and Pinkie are going, you'll be in your twenties before you're ready to go all the way."

"I'd rather be that than be our parents. You're lucky you get to live with Oriko most of the week; you don't have to hear them in the room across from yours."

"Damn right I'm lucky. I worked my ass off so I could go to school in Shirome with Oriko. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a lunch date I was in the middle of. I'll see you later tonight."

"See you later tonight."

"What was that, Spooky? Ya say something?" Kyouko is looking at you as you exit your mental conversation with Kirika. She and everyone else at the table, that is. First you're looking unhealthily flushed, and now they think you're talking to yourself.

"Sorry, I was just talking with Kirika for a moment," you say, hoping your friends will believe you, and won't think there actually is something wrong with your health. "I must have said that out loud when she ended the conversation."

"Yeah? So what's Crazy got ta say about this whole thing with that Hijiri girl?"

"We didn't talk about Hijiri Kanna," you say to Kyouko. "We, uh... Talked about some personal business." Kyouko nods her head before returning to her conversation with Sayaka, leaving you free to address Madoka; hopefully you'll be able to put into practice your sister's advice. Read the mood, Homura; read the mood. "I think I would like my Soul Gem back," you say to Madoka. "You haven't done anything wrong, but I... Well, I guess I am feeling a little warmer than usual."

"Of course." As soon as your Soul Gem is removed from Madoka's finger, the warmth enveloping your soul breaks, and you feel your temperature returning to normal. As you take your Soul Gem back from Madoka, she says "You're looking much better already, Homura-chan."

"I'm feeling much better, too," you say. "If you were hoping to, um, wear my soul for a little while longer, then I guess I'll have to find some way of paying you back for the lost time." Hopefully Madoka accepts your payment; a kiss, though the mood isn't right for trying anything more intimate than that. This 'reading the mood' thing is going to be difficult, isn't it?

Madoka smiles, accepting your payment in full. "If you can make the time, I'd also accept payment in the form of a date," she says with a smile.

"I'll keep that in mind." Conversation around the table becomes noticeably lighter once everyone has some food in their mouths. Archer has been experimenting, hasn't he? you think as you make decent headway into the day's lunch; grilled chicken skewers are typical lunch fare for you, but the marinade used today is different from the spicy one Archer usually makes. It's exotic, is the best way to put it; a flavour whose origin you can't quite place. It is quite good, though, so you won't knock points off for unfamiliarity. "Oh, by the way," you say to Hitomi when a free moment finds both yours mouths. "I asked Nurse Ortensia if she knew anything about artificial humans like Hijiri Kanna."

"Oh? What did she have to say?"

"Not much, unfortunately. Nothing on how to make one." Understandable, but disappointing for Hitomi all the same. "She said they often have pretty basic personalities, because it takes more skill than most non-specialised mages have to craft convincing personalities. I don't know what Kanna Niko did to make Hijiri Kanna, but Nurse Ortensia seems to think that she didn't do a very good job, so I'm assuming she's met more competently-made homunculi than her."

"I see," Hitomi says. "Thank you. I don't suppose the information will be of any use to me, but it's enough, and Tohsaka-san will be by soon to answer any questions I've got."

You nod. "I'll let you know as soon as she arrives, assuming she doesn't get in touch with you first."

Getting your Soul Gem back from Madoka was enough to return your colour and temperature to normal, quashing most of your classmates' attempts to inquire about your health. You say most, because it hasn't stopped all of them. "You can head home early if you're not feeling alright. I won't hold it against ya."

The moment you go to take a drink of water in the middle of practice, Mochizumi-san is on top of you. Not literally, of course; and you know she's only asking because she cares about her team, but still. "I'm fine," you say, setting your water bottle down on the bench. "Really. I've been feeling a lot better since lunch ended. I'm good to go."

"Alright, but let me know if you need to take a break."

You nod, returning to the line to resume your practice. You steady your breathing as you ensure your feet are positioned correctly. With bow and arrow in hand, you raise your bow to its starting point above your head, and slowly lower the bow to eye level as you draw back. Taking another deep breath, you steady yourself as you adjust your line of sight, until the target twenty-eight meters away is positioned for a perfect hit; and then someone breaks your concentration.

Your loosed arrow flies wildly off course, piercing the grass off to the side by the track as Kyouko's voice delivers the bad news. "Hey Spooky, ya free ta give us a hand? That pink bitch is back, and she brought friends."

Do you
[ ] Head out yourself, immediately
[ ] Send Archer; you can't get there in time
[ ] See if Tomoe-san can back them up in your stead
[ ] Let them deal with it on their own
[ ] Other (write-in)

Question: If we say to head out immediately, would we also call Archer to come?
