Confringentur 2; a Madoka Magica / Fate/Stay Night sequel

Maybe reinforce places around the city so we have places to safely fall back to?
Well there's what NMS said, adding remote artillery or something to increase our attack power since I don't doubt we could do that, finally going through with the familiars to beef up our numbers so that there's less to focus on in battle... honestly didn't think it through much (sorry), but those are three fairly solid ideas. Like I said, my productivity has died down a bit, so I might not be the creative force I usually am, sorry.
I guess I haven't really made it clear, but Lancer and Assassin have been working on familiars already. It's just that it's been happening off-screen, and there's been other things we've had our minds on, so it hasn't really come up how far along they've gotten. Still, and I know I keep telling you this, don't sell yourself short. Even a little can go a long way, as long as it's something for me to work with. Somehow, I make miracles happen, even when there's no one else but you two who see it.

Fun fact, the Poles really do have their own version of Max from Der Freischütz. It's not Polish, it's Slovenian; that's my mistake. His name's Lampert, the warlock marksman. It's basically the same story, except Polish instead of German. And there happens to be an open slot for Archer, if Sidonia is interested. Of course, if that's the case then Sidonia will have to make an open slot for Gudrun somewhere, so we should probably keep our remaining powese servants safe, especially if they might fit into a class Gudrun could be summoned into. I can't remember if that's even been addressed before, but I'm certain that it's new to the Saints. So is Svarog being a deity of blacksmithing, which if you think about it, is probably what Sidonia was already invoking him for, to fix her shard of Dáinsleif. Tried not to focus too much on stuff we've already covered in one form or another, with the exception of mentioning that Chernobog might historically have not been worshiped by the Slavs.

Not sure where to go from here. I might have something more concrete later, or I might not. It'll depend on whether inspiration strikes me and whether I have to be the one who cooks dinner tonight.

It's complicated. Chernobog and Belobog. Crni Bog i Beli Bog. The Slavs have a habit of cursing black fates and black people, not in this context people of African descent, but it can have a lot of different meanings.

Put simply White is associated with light and day and healthy luck, while Black is associated with dark and night and ill luck. As such any god could technically be both Chernobog and Belobog depending on which Slavic person is talking about them and in what context though fewer Slavs would bother to use the name Belobog as it sounds weird at best to not use the name of the God that sent one healthy luck while using a pseudonym for a God that sent one ill luck is a good idea to avoid having more shit piled onto one's plate by the Deity in question and/or by their worshipers.

If you want an idea of how Slavs write about black fates go read The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andric and specifically the chapter that deals with the fate of two gamblers. A Chernobog shows up in that chapter unnamed.

Day 27 Chapter 8
[X] Try asking about setting up defensive measures before Sidonia starts her invasion, so that you have at least some advantage.

"Anything?"

Your question feels futile, and when both Saki and Mirai return replies of "Nothing we haven't already found," you resign yourself to accepting that it was futile. You lean back in your chair, sighing as you stretch your arms. "Well, that could have gone better."

"Honestly? I think we did a pretty good job, all things considered," Saki says. "I mean, there's just not a whole lot of information available about this stuff, and what is there is still that we already know about. The best I could manage to find after we got back to looking was that, apparently, there's a version of that marksman guy's story that involves the Wild Hunt. I'm not sure if that's an indicator of anything or not, but… It's there."

You'd like to think that it's just a coincidence. "That version of the story post-dates Sidonia's lifetime by several hundred years, so I don't think it's anything more than coincidental," Saki adds, "But still, maybe that's something else we should bring up with Akemi and the others." Turning to Mirai, Saki asks "What about you?"

"I tried looking for that one Serbian source Mikuni mentioned the other day, but I wasn't able to find it," Mirai says. "At least, not in Japanese, anyway. So either she was looking harder than we were, or she just got lucky and stumbled across something she shouldn't have." Mirai drums her fingers against the edge of her laptop, musing "Stupid, frigging… Why don't we get her to research all of this, if she's so good at it."

"She probably is, if we're being honest,' Niko says. "If she's the one Akemi tasked with researching this stuff, I'd imagine she's working just as hard as you two are. It just remains to be seen whether she finds anything else new that either of you might have missed."

Three heads nod in agreement with Niko's point, and a silence falls over the common area, punctuated only by the impatient drumming of Mirai's fingers against the table. "So… What now?" she asks. "I mean, we've found about as much as we're going to, I think, so… How what should we be doing now?" Mirai turns her head in Saki's direction, musing "It's not like we have classes to go to anymore, not since the university's shut down while the evacuation order is in place, so…?"

"We make ourselves useful," Saki replies. She turns to you and Niko, and asks, more or less both of you at the same time "Do you have any ideas?"

You turn your head to Niko; you don't, but maybe- "We can start by setting up defensive measures across the city," Niko says. "It's something I had wanted to do in Asunaro once I realised the severity of the situation, but I never ended up finding the time, not with everything else going on around me. But here, if we've still got a few days left and we're strapped for things to do…" Niko's voice trails off, as though the rest of her statement doesn't need to be said. "That's my vote, at least. It's ultimately up to Kazumi to decide."

"No, I think it's a good idea," you say. "We should probably get permission from Akemi before we start messing around in her city, but I don't think she'll mind us wanting to be proactive about setting up defences." You glance over to the clock display on Kaoru's laptop; school isn't over yet. You're hesitant to bother Akemi while she's busy taking care of other, equally as important things, but you know you don't have a choice. When you see three sets of eyes all staring at you, expectantly, you know you don't have a choice. "Just… Give me a moment," you say.

You excuse yourself from the common area and head to Niko's room. Is it also your room? The room you share with Niko? Or is it just Niko's room because you have your own room, even if you're not actually planning on using it? You were asking the same questions earlier in the day, weren't you? That's where you left your phone after your initial conversation with Akemi earlier in the morning, because you didn't think you'd need it.

But something stops you. Wait a minute, you think to yourself. Akemi's in school right now. What am I doing, trying to call her on her phone? Remembering that you are a puella magi, you take a seat on Niko's bed, and reach out to Akemi not with your phone, but with your mind.

"Hey, Akemi, it's Kazumi," you say. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important, but I… I needed to talk to you about something. Do you have a minute?"

"Strictly speaking, yes,"
Akemi replies. "I'm in class at the moment, but I can spare a minute or two to speak if it's important."

"Good. So… Saki, Mirai, Niko, and myself were talking earlier,"
you say; "And, well… We've tried to keep ourselves occupied while we waited for you to be done with school, so we were doing some research. But, we've kind of hit a dead end, and you're not done with school yet, so…" You're rambling; you know it, and Akemi can probably tell by the way you've failed to get to the point. "So, I was wondering, would it be okay if we killed some time setting up some defensive measures somewhere in the city?"

"Yes, that would be fine,"
Akemi says. "In fact, that's not even something I'd feel you have to ask me permission to do. It's valuable work towards the war effort, so don't feel like you need to ask permission If you've got a good idea. Do you have any idea of where you might want to consider setting defensive measures up?"

"Not yet, but… That's something I can talk to the others about when I'm done talking to you,"
you say. The idea strikes you, so while you still have Akemi, you decide to ask "So, um, how's everything going with the evacuation? Is that going smoothly?"

"It's… A bit of a mixed bag,"
Akemi replies. "I'd like to think that Hitomi, Nurse Ortensia, and myself are making good progress, but aside from Nurse Ortensia, we're limited in what we can do. Hitomi and I can't just go wandering off into other classrooms while class is in session, so we have to either catch our teachers as they're leaving for the next class, or find them in the staff office in-between classes. So while yes, I'd like to think that we're making good progress, we're being constrained by our position as students."

"I see…"
You're not so stupid that what Akemi said went completely over your head. You understand the point she's making about not being able to do certain things or go certain places because she's a student. But, not being in school yourself, you feel there's still a vital, lived-experience component to what Akemi is saying that you're missing out on. "Well, I'm glad things are going smoothly enough for you, at any rate," you say. "Keep up the good work."

"Thank you for the encouragement,"
Akemi replies. "I'll be looking forward to seeing the work you and the others can get done before school gets out. If you think you'll need assistance in setting anything up, don't hesitate to contact Oriko and ask if she'll let you borrow Lancer. I'm sure once you explain the situation to her, she'd be delighted to lend her servant out to help you."

"I'll keep that in mind."

"Just… Remember to be careful when you're out and about. Especially in the case of being seen by someone, and especially if you find yourself venturing into areas that might be dangerous, like the sewers. We still don't know the whole of what's lurking down there. It might be more spiders, or it might be something else. So be careful."

"Right, I'll be careful,"
you say. "But thanks for the warning, Akemi; and again, good luck."

"Good luck to you as well, Kazumi."

Akemi is the one who hangs up on you, leaving you alone with your thoughts in Niko's bedroom. She sleeps on the side of the bed that's closer to the door, so right now you're sitting in a Niko-shaped depression. The Kazumi-shaped depression on the other side of the bed is positioned right beside it, as your invisible form holds tightly onto Niko's waist. She's taller than you, but she sleeps curled up on her side, while you sleep spread a~l~l the way out, giving your indents the impression that you're the taller of the two. You lean over, grabbing Niko's pillow and hugging it tightly.

You're still embarrassed that Assassin saw you sleeping with Niko. Was she watching you the entire time you were sleeping, or did she only get up and start reading after Niko had gotten up? You set Niko's pillow back where you found it, and resolve to give the real thing an equally warm hug the next time you see her.

Which isn't that far away, since she's sitting at the table in the next room over. "Hey," you say, cuddling up to your taller girlfriend and giving her a hug from behind. "How's work coming along?"

"It's… Fine, I guess," Niko says. Squirming in your embrace, she asks "What's the occasion?"

"Because I wanted to, silly," you reply. "Do I need a reason to want to hug my girlfriend, especially when she's so warm and huggable?"

Niko sighs, and resigns herself to being hugged for as long as you want. "No, I suppose you don't," she says. "But could you at least hug me in a different position? I can't work when you've got my arms pinned like this."

That's obviously the point, something you won't share with Niko. Saki coughs into her hand; she and Mirai are staring at you. "Well?" Mirai asks. "Stop messing around with Niko and tell us what Akemi said already." She crosses her arms over her chest, and grumbles something to herself that sounds suspiciously like "Why do we need to ask for permission if we're going to be helping her?"

"Because what we think might be helpful, Akemi might see it differently," Saki says to Mirai, confirming what your ears heard coming form her. "But, Kazumi, what did Akemi say?"

"She said she didn't have a problem with us setting up defences around the city," you say. "Actually, she also said that's not something we would have needed to ask permission for, so…" You scratch the back of your head, and add "Mirai was… Kind of right, actually."

Mirai smiles, and she sticks her tongue out at Saki in a playful, almost "I told you so" manner, prompting Saki to say "You put that tongue back in your mouth, or your mouth'll be the only place that tongue goes for a while." Mirai's tongue slides back into her mouth, and you're left traumatised as your brain attempts to compute all of the places Mirai's tongue could go.

Suitably, Niko is the only one of you whose mind right now is solely focused on business. She clears her throat, and says "So, Kazumi, now that… That, is out of the way, did you have any idea of where we should start setting up defences?"

You hadn't gotten that far yet.

Where should you set up defences?
[ ] Around town, wherever you think could use one
[ ] Focus on key areas along Mitakihara's leylines (ask for help from someone more knowledgeable before choosing this)
[ ] Focus on setting them in places that'll box Sidonia in
[ ] Venture down into the sewers and set them up along a path to intercept possible familiar activity
[ ] Ask someone who knows more about the layout of Mitakihara than you do for advice
[ ] Other (write-in)

Not a whole lot to say about this one, aside from the fact that I was surprised by how much longer I was able to make this than I initially thought I would. We're mostly just covering the one thing I should have asked last night, that being, where are we setting things up?

[x] Plan Covering bases
-[x] Around town, wherever you think could use one
--[x] Like Hospitals for instance. They have people there that likely won't be in any condition to evacuate before Sidonia makes her moves.
-[x] Focus on key areas along Mitakihara's leylines (ask for help from someone more knowledgeable before choosing this)
--[x] Akemi already suggested you get her team's Lancer to help you, so do that.

Madoka wrapped up in a suit of teddy bears covered in protective wards: "Um, why am I wearing this?"

Mirai: "Because you technically count as one of the city's leylines. Now hold still!"

It's the battle of the century! Pink versus Pink! I would introduce the battle as a contest of who loves their girlfriend more, except Madoka just broke up with Homura, and we know that Mirai was Kirika-levels of devoted to Saki even before they were officially dating, so I don't think it would be much of a contest.

But you know, you saying this makes me realise that Mirai would probably be a huge fan of Girls und Panzer. It's currently airing (Fall 2012 season) and the main character has a obsession with this weird stuffed bear mascot character that's always getting beat up. I bet Mirai wishes she could have one (or a dozen) for herself.
Good to know that Dmol is canon to Confringentur.

Also I swear that I just came in at the same time as NMS and wasn't trying to mooch off his vote.
Hey, he may not vote all that often, but the information he's given me has done wonders for helping me to formulate a more authentic version of Sidonia's end goals. Without the infodumps he's given about obrezes, Jarilo, the Wild Hunt, etc, we'd be looking at a much, much blander, and much less authentic end boss fight. So, hats off to him for contributing in his own, important way.

Thank you. I'm not comfortable voting most of time because I just come in and read pieces of the story without knowing enough of the context to vote.

Anyways don't sell yourself short Sidonia digging multiple underground passages and expanding on already existing ones is very in character for that part of Europe as both Slavs and Germans/Austrians used to do that for a good part of history as a means of having a place to hide their population, smuggle goods in and out of fortifications/military checkpoints, enter and leave in secret especially if a noble and just use them for sabotage action since they were already there and hidden for view of most people.

See here for a brief English primer on the Lagums, that's the Serbian word for that sort of naturally over centuries developed underground network of man made tunnels and caves, of Belgrade.

Day 27 Chapter 9
[X] Plan Covering bases

Niko clears her throat – a welcome distraction from the fooling around Saki and Mirai are engaged in – and says "So, Kazumi, now that… That, is out of the way, did you have any idea of where we should start setting up defences?"

You hadn't gotten that far yet. "Well, I hadn't really thought about it," and you say as much. "But, Akemi said we could ask Mikuni if she'd lend us her Lancer, so maybe I could ask her where she thinks would be good places to start."

Saki and Mirai, back to business as well after Niko's throat-clearing, nod their heads. "Are you going to step out again to speak with Mikuni?" Saki asks. "Or are you planning on speaking to her right here?"

Now comes the part where you have to admit to being an idiot. "Well, the reason I excused myself last time was because…" You can't say it. "Because I forgot Akemi was in school, so I went to Niko's room to grab my phone. But then I remembered that she was in school, so I decided I could just message her telepathically instead." You give an awkward laugh, and rap your knuckles against the side of your head. "Silly, right?"

Fortunately, neither Saki nor Mirai say anything, and all Niko does is give you a faint smile, leaving you free to contact Mikuni without feeling further embarrassment. "Hey, Mikuni; it's Kazumi. I hope I'm not interrupting anything right now, but I needed to talk to you."

"About borrowing Lancer to help set up defences around the city, right?"
asks Mikuni. "No, I can spare a few moments to speak to you."

"Did you know that because you used your power to see the future?"

You can almost imagine Mikuni trying to hold back her laughter. "No, silly; Akemi-san told me that you might be getting in touch with me about just that," she says. "I don't particularly mind letting you borrow Lancer if you're going to be doing something productive. Did you have an idea of hwere you wanted to start?"

"Ah… No,"
you're forced to say. "I was kind of hoping I could ask you for some advice on where to start."

"A wise move,"
Mikuni says. "I imagine the decision would be much easier to make if you were still in Asunaro." Even inside your mind, you can hear Mikuni humming to herself as she considers your question. "Perhaps the best places to start would be, well, just around Mitakihara, in places that might be vulnerable; hospitals, for example. We're doing what we can to evacuate as much of the city as possible, but for people stuck inside the hospital, that's much more difficult. Perhaps the train station as well. We won't be able to stop incoming traffic the day of, so setting up some sort of protection around the major stations in the area to keep incoming passengers safe. Setting up defences along the city's leylines would also be beneficial. Lately, I've been having a bad feeling-"

You don't mean to cut Mikuni off, but you need to clarify something she just said that you don't understand. "Sorry, but could you please tell me what 'leylines' are? I don't think I've heard of that before."

"Leylines are… Well, how did Archer describe them… Leylines are like veins of mana, flowing under the earth's surface. Mitakihara has some fairly robust leylines, according to Archer, though that could also be because of Kaname-san's influence…"
You try to wrack your brain for who 'Kaname-san' might be. You don't remember hearing about her before. "Lancer can show you where in the city the major leylines flow. I would highly recommend setting up defences around them; I still can't see into her future, but lately I've had a bad feeling that Sidonia might try to take advantage of them somehow, if she isn't already in the process of doing so."

"I don't like the sound of that."

"Neither do I. I hope that isn't part of her plan, but in case it is, we should be fortifying the city's leylines,"
Mikuni says. "So please, sit tight. I can have Lancer at your location shortly, and she can help you figure out a more comprehensive plan of action."

"Okay."
Like Akemi, you'll let Mikuni get back to class; or maybe she's done with class and is fooling around with Kure, you think. No, they wouldn't be dumb enough to do that in school, would they…? But, didn't you hear Saki and Mirai talking about fooling around after classes got out before…? You do everything in your power to push those thoughts out of your mind, and focus on the task at hand. "All right, I spoke to Mikuni, and she was willing to not only give me a few pointers about where we should start, she was also willing to lend us her Lancer servant."

A chorus of "Good"s leave Saki and Mirai's mouths, while Niko asks "So, where did she say we should start?"

"She said places like the hospital and the major train stations would be good places to start," you reply. "Because it'll be hard to evacuate people stuck in the hospital, or to prevent rail traffic from coming into Mitakihara the day of. She also said we should focus on the city's leylines, but that's something her Lancer's going to have to help us with, since I don't know where they are."

"I could have told you, if you had asked."

You turn your head as Lancer's voice comes from behind you. You're surprised to see her; you thought she was training with Kaoru and Umika. "That said, I'm willing to concede that Brynhildr may be more adept at magic than myself, so I'm not offended that you'd ask her." You can tell the words don't leave Lancer's mouth lightly. "Though I'd wager my own skills over hers in a straight fight any day."

Why does that just sound like Lancer is trying to make up for the fact that she just admitted to someone being better than her?

"How do you know what they are?" you ask. "I'd never heard of them before in my life."

"There's a major leyline that cuts all the way through the Isles, south to north," Lancer replies. "It's almost impossible that I'd not learn about them."

"So, you and-" "Brynhildr," Niko says, when you stumble on the pronunciation of Mikuni's Lancer's name. "Right, that, you're going to help us set up defences around these leylines, right?"

"I would have gone with you even if you had not asked," Lancer replies. "I would have liked if my sister could join us as well, but to hear her talk about the way her master has used her, I don't think it would be wise." Lancer crosses her arms over her chest, adding "My sister is the only person to ever best me in combat, and yet they have her working construction duties. I couldn't believe my ears when she told me how badly her skills have been wasted."

"Well, maybe it's because of her class?" Mirai offers up a suggestion. "She's only an Assassin, right? If our Assassin is anything to go by-"

"But my sister is not like Assassin," Lancer says. "My sister says that she was forced by her master into a class vessel for which she is unsuited. Her best summons would undoubtedly have been either the Rider or Caster classes, knowing her. She's been making the most of her situation, but apparently, her master has not been making the most of her."

You'll let that thought sit with you while you wait for Mikuni's Lancer – Brynhildr, and you're probably going to want to call her that to avoid confusion when there's two Lancers around – to arrive. She's coming all the way from Shirome, so you don't know how long it'll take her to get here- "Good afternoon."

That was fast.

Brynhildr appears at the closest approximation your base has to a front door, wearing a dark suit and looking more like a professional office worker than a servant who's seen combat before. Her eyes scan over each of you – you, Saki, Mirai, Niko, and Lancer – before they finally settle on Saki. "You are Sigurd's former master, are you not?" she asks, bowing politely. But maybe getting a little bit too close when she bows. "You smell like Sigurd." Okay, yeah, definitely too close! "I look forward to working with you."

"Uh…" Saki is at a loss for words, and Mirai is fuming. "While I appreciate the gesture, it's actually Kazumi who'll be taking the lead on this," Saki says. "So, please direct your… Self, to her from now on, unless she's otherwise occupied."

"Of course." Okay, that was weird, but hopefully things go a bit more smoothly from here. Brynhildr turns around and bows in your direction, saying "I look forward to working with you. Shall we begin?"

That's all the excuse you need to set off. You let Brynhildr lead the way, since she knows more about the layout of Mitakihara than you do, and closely behind you follows Lancer, with Saki, Mirai, and Niko not far behind. "The leylines of this city run along the river, and the rail line," Brynhildr says. "My master has instructed me, if you have no preference, so start there." Brynhildr turns her head backwards, towards you,a nd she asks "Will that be a problem?"

"No, that's fine," you say. "We'll follow your lead and do whatever we have to, right?" The other four heads following behind you all nod. "So… You said the leylines run along the river and the rail line, so does that mean…?"

"Yes, unfortunately," Brynhildr replies. "Sidonia's workshop comes dangerously close to a major intersection of leyline." That does not sound good at all. "However, based on what we know, it is likely that the location of her workshop is a coincidence, based more on where Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed fell than on any effort to corrupt this city's leylines. Though if that is part of her plan, I have no doubt she will take full advantage of her position."

"Since we're starting from the warehouses on the southeastern edge of the city, it only makes the most sense to work outwards from there," Lancer says. So that's where your team of six starts. Lancer teams up with Brynhildr and the two of them show the four of you the ropes.

"You have to be gentle about setting up defensive applications," Brynhildr says, guiding you – well, mostly Niko, since she's in the best position to actually do something, given her powers – through the process. You watch as her fingers trace the outline of a pattern – kind of in the shape of a fish, if it were standing on its tail fins – into the foundation along the side of the river bank, before Lancer joins her in setting another just like it. "It isn't something you can rush, nor is it something you can be careless about. Your movements must be swift, but precise, in order to achieve the best results. Come, I'll show you."

So one by one, the six of you work your way across the river, working westwards along the train tracks as they cross over the river, and following them into the city from there. "We'll do what we can along the train tracks," Brynhildr says. "Once we come to the largest station, we'll head northeast towards the hospital, then work our way back to the eastern bank of the river from there."

You're making good progress, when "Ah-ha!" You stop, suddenly hearing a voice you haven't heard before. "Hold it right there, girls. We've received a number of reports about suspicious girls wandering around in the neighbourhood." You turn, slowly; it's a cop. "Now, what might the four of you be doing here…?"

Four? You quickly look around you; Lancer and Brynhildr are nowhere to be seen. So they dashed off as soon as they saw a cop approaching, did they? That' skind of mean, leaving you like this.

His voice trails off, as you watch his eyes slowly fix on Niko. "It's you! You're the girl that's gone missing!" Before you have a chance to react, the cop has grabbed hold of Niko's shoulder, and his gaze falls onto you, Saki, and Mirai; "And what were you three doing with her?" he asks. "You know this girl's been reported missing by her parents, right? I'm going to have to ask that you all come down to the koban with me."

Do you
[ ] Go with the cop to the koban
-[ ] Cooperate, and maybe he can help you to prove your identity
-[ ] Cooperate just long enough for someone to break you and your friends out of custody
[ ] Make a break for it
-[ ] Grab Niko and get her out of there as well
-[ ] Let the cop take Niko; at least he'll let her parents know that she's okay
[ ] Tell Lancer to intervene and get you out of there
-[ ] Tell her to make a distraction so you can make a break for it
-[ ] Tell her to hypnotise the cop so he forgets all about you
[ ] Other (write-in)

Bet you didn't see this coming, did you? Neither did I, actually, but the more time I spent trying to think of how to approach this, the more I realised that, for the direction we picked, I didn't really have a good payoff to our journey. So now here's a cop in our face.

The leyline that Scáthach mentions as cutting south-north across the British Isles is a reference to two things- One, the Roman-British roads (specifically Stane, Ermine, and Dere streets) that stretched all the way from Chichester in the south, to the Antonine Wall in the north; as well as to the work of Alfred Watkins, the 19th century English amateur archeologist and antiquarian who is famous for coining the word "ley" (where we get "leylines" from) in reference to his research into ancient Briton stone structures scattered across the countryside into line formations. One of his books, titled The Old Straight Track: its mounds, beacons, moats, sites, and mark stones, from 1925, was referenced in the 2013 Little Witch Academia OVA to show the placement of leylines on the British Isles, which correspond to locations in his works.

And again, how do I do it? How do I keep stumbling into the right things without meaning to?

In this case? Just by doing your research.

Remember this was standard practice in the Holy Roman Empire territories for centuries and also in a good chunk of eastern and southeastern Europe. Even if you didn't remember it consciously you would have picked it up in the back of your head like how you picked up a lot of the character interaction rules for both Fate and Madoka before taking them in your own direction.

[x] Give peace talks a chance.
-[x] Inform the cop that Niko has already been reunited with her parents.
--[x] Maybe the search didn't get called off because of the confusion with the terrorist the past couple of days?
---[x] If he still doesn't let you go, then have Lancer hypnotize him and get out of there.

Day 27 Chapter 10
[X] Give peace talks a chance

You're making good progress, when "Ah-ha!" You stop, suddenly hearing a voice you haven't heard before. "Hold it right there, girls. We've received a number of reports about suspicious girls wandering around in the neighbourhood." You turn, slowly; it's a cop. "Now, what might the four of you be doing here…?"

Four? You quickly look around you; Lancer and Brynhildr are nowhere to be seen. So they dashed off as soon as they saw a cop approaching, did they? That's kind of mean, leaving you like this.

I'm going to have to ask that you all come down to the kōban with me."

"Um, officer, there's been a mistake," you say, sounding unsure of yourself. "She's already been reunited with her parents." Right? She has, hasn't she?

"Yes, her parents called the main Asunaro office and reported that she'd come back some time ago," the officer says. So then what's the problem? Is he just being a- "But then, just a few days ago, she was reported missing again." That was why Niko left the other day to… Go… Oh, right, that was when she was attacked, wasn't it? "This girl's got police all over Kanagawa riled up twice now in the span of one month."

The officer stares at the three of you, his hand still clamped tightly to Niko's shoulder; too tightly; you can see pain on Niko's face as she tries to avoid squirming out of his iron grip. "Now, I'm going to take her back to the kōban with me and give her parents a call, and you three are going to tell me what you're doing wandering around the city being suspicious with a missing girl."

"We're not trying to be suspicious," Saki says, as if that's going to help matters. "I don't know what people have been reporting about us, but we've just been wandering around trying to kill time until our friends get out of school."

The officer stares Saki down; "And why aren't you in school?" he asks. "Furthermore, if you're just 'wandering around', what the heck are you doing wandering around with a girl who's been reported missing, twice now? Did you know she had been reported missing?" Saki and Mirai both shake their heads. "I'm going to need to see some ID, from all of you."

Saki and Mirai reach for their wallets, producing ID cards and handing them over to the police officer. "Um, Saki and I are in university," Mirai says. "But we don't have class until later in the afternoon, so that's why-"

"We didn't know she'd been reported missing," Saki adds, cutting Mirai off before she can say anything more. "I thought she'd cleared it with her parents to be with us. If I'd known that she'd run away again, I would have-"

"Is running away a common occurrence for this one?" the officer asks, jostling Niko. She winces; he's definitely doing that way more than he needs to. "Is she just a troublemaker, or is there something going on at home that she's made you two privy to?" Before Saki or Mirai can speak, the police officer turns to you. "Hey, you there, I thought I asked for some ID. Didn't your parents teach you to obey when a police officer gives you an order?"

Where does he get off talking like that? This idiot doesn't even know your parents!

Then again, you don't know your parents, either. You don't even think the old you knew her parents very well.

"I, uh…" Crap. You don't have any! "Lancer, get us out of this mess, will you?"

"I was waiting to see if this would turn into a hassle, or if you and your friends could get out of is by yourselves,"
Lancer replies. "I suppose it was too much of me to ask that you try to talk an idiot out of being an idiot." You aren't sure if you should be offended by what Lancer is saying or not, but you don't have time to dwell on it; because there she is.

Lancer appears behind the police officer – and holy crap she's taller than him! – tapping him on the shoulder to get his attention. "Excuse me, officer," she says. "But, do you really think it's a productive use of your time to be harassing these young girls?"

"Keep out of this, lady," the police officer says, turning his head around, "Or I'll have you brought up on charges-" The police officer's voice dies in his throat, and he blinks, slowly, before his senses return to him and he snaps "Wait, where did you come from? You weren't there a second ago!" You're pretty sure that's the point, idiot.

"I'll only say this once," Lancer says. "These aren't the girls you're looking for. They're not suspicious, the blonde is not the girl who went missing, and you will let them off with only a warning. Do I make myself clear?"

"Uh… Sure…" The police officer sounds like he's in a daze, similar to the security guard you ran into in the city hall archives when you got caught looking around and Lancer came to rescue you. The police officer blinks, and Niko darts over to your side the instant his grip on her shoulder releases. "Sorry about the confusion, girls," he says. "I guess you're not who I'm supposed to be looking for after all. But be careful next time, okay? It's not good to waste a police officer's time with your shenanigans."

"That's a good boy." Lancer speaks in the most humiliating tone you've ever heard her speak in, as though she's congratulating her dog for not peeing on the carpet. Wait, why do you know what that sounds like? With an equally as embarrassing – embarrassing for you to watch, if not for the police officer being subjected to it – Lancer slaps the police officer on the behind, and says "Now, get the hell out of my sight. If I see you harassing my girls again I'll castrate you."

Eyes still glazed over from Lancer's hypnosis go wide, and the police officer turns and heads off in the opposite direction, and Lancer smiles to herself at a job well done. A job done terrifyingly, more like. Niko, despite being a head taller than you, feels small as she huddles beside you, and you wrap an arm around her, taking care not to squeeze her shoulder too much. God, and that was her right arm, too. "Does it hurt?"

"A little…" It looked like it hurt a lot more than just a little. "I…" Niko looks away as she bites down on her lip. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cause trouble for any of you. I should just-"

"Just what?" Mirai asks. "Just apologise; that's good enough. You didn't mean it, after all."

"I know, but I… I should have been more careful," Niko says. "I was always so careful about covering up before leaving the base back then… I should have known she wouldn't have gone back home after attacking me."

"It's okay," you say, making sure to cuddle Niko extra-extra to push away the memory of being attacked by her. You've never even met Niko's other homunculus, and you already think you dislike her. "You didn't do anything wrong."

"Kazumi's right," Saki says. "We can't always plan for everything perfectly. Sometimes things slip our mind; that's okay, it doesn't mean you did anything wrong. But beating yourself up about this isn't going to do you – or any of us – any good." Saki tries to smile for Niko, but it only succeeds in driving Niko deeper into your embrace. Wait, that's not entirely a bad thing, is it? "Besides, Lancer was there to bail us out, so it's okay."

"I apologise for disappearing on you all like that," Lancer says. "I had hoped the four of you would be able to talk your way out of things. I didn't anticipate that the situation had changed, or that the officer was going to be a brute and an idiot."

Beside Lancer, Brynhildr appears, bowing and looking equally as guilty for her inaction; "And, much as I regret to admit it, but the matter was not my problem to solve," she says. "Had my master been here, my reaction would have been different. But while the four of you are my master's allies, you are not my charges, so-"

"It's fine," Saki says. "You've got to take care of your responsibilities towards your own master first, right?" Lancer nods her head. "Don't sweat it. It all worked out in the end." For how much she beats herself up over her mishandling of things towards the start of the month, that's advice you wish Saki would take for herself. "Now, let's keep going, shall we?"

Lancer and Brynhildr look to you, and Lancer says "If that is what my master wishes to do," as she eyes the way you're holding on to Niko. "However, she seems to have other ideas in mind, at the moment." Well, you do want to cuddle Niko until she feels better, but you also don't want to be the reason everyone else gets held up. "So, what will it be, master? Shall we push forward, or should we call it a day in order to avoid any more unwanted attention?"

The way Lancer's eyebrow raised as she spoke, you had no trouble hearing the words that went unspoken. "Or should we call it a day so those two can fool around?"

Well, it's like you said; you do want to cuddle Niko until she feels better, but you also don't want to be the reason everyone else gets held up.

Do you
[ ] Keep going as planned
-[ ] Pick up and keep moving straight away
-[ ] Keep moving, but only after Niko calls her parents to let them know she's okay
--[ ] Trust Niko to call her parents on her own
--[ ] Take Niko's phone and call her parents yourself if she won't do it
[ ] Stop
-[ ] Just take a short breather so Niko can collect herself
-[ ] Take a long rest; tell Saki and Mirai to go on ahead, and you and Niko will catch up to them
--[ ] How do you help Niko to collect herself? (write-in)
-[ ] Call it a day; school is close enough to being out that you can meet up with Akemi and her friends in a little bit anyway
[ ] Other (write-in)

Bit shorter than usual today, but I ran into a wall right around here and couldn't think of anything else to say for what I'd been given. So rather than push myself to try and fill in space, I'm going to give myself a break and not try to do more than I can manage. Not a whole lot to say about this, except for the fact that we really should have seen this coming. I mean, Hijiri Kanna had to have run off again after attacking Niko, or else she wouldn't have been able to deliver Niko's arm to Sidonia. So, there's that, and it's something we can either ignore, or try to take care of before we go any further.

I might revisit the choices I've given later, so on the chance that I do, don't be surprised if I end up asking if the vote needs to be changed to accommodate.

I'm just going to shut up about my computer situation until it improves, since I think everyone's had enough of that. I'll just be grateful for now that I have loving parents that let me borrow theirs sometimes. Regardless, not much as usual, but it's what I've got.

No no, keep going. It helps kill posts.

And while I'm on the topic of killing posts, @Dmol8, have you ever been to the Belgrade Military Museum?

N/A. That's not how you ask that question. The Belgrade Military Museum is part of Kalemegdan which is Belgrade's most famous park and part of the Stari Grad/the Old City, the historical core of Belgrade. I've been to Kelmegdan a few times, I've seen the outdoor parts of the Military Museum, but I don't remember being inside it. Maybe I was, maybe I wasn't, it's been around at least two decades at this point since I was on Kalemegdan last.

What are you specifically asking about?

What are you specifically asking about?
This one, the part that bills itself as the military museum. If you had been, or if you had not but had an inclination to go, I was hoping you might be willing to share some pictures with me, since the official website is... Lacking, to say the least, when it comes to good pictures of their exhibitions. I'm interested in the WWII stuff, especially the tanks in the outdoor collection. In particular, the Panzer 1 in the outdoor collection is of an incredibly rare variant and the one in Belgrade is one of only two that still exist, so if you had any pictures of that you'd be willing to share I would greatly appreciate it.

If not, that's fine. I just thought I'd ask since you live in Belgrade.

Oh. I don't have pictures of that one. Sorry.

Yeah their site is shit.

Still are these the Panzer 1 model pictures you are looking for?

Edit: Added some more links.
