Yeah, that area. To me it always looked looked like another funnel should have been there, or something.
EDIT: Apparently the whole "Izumo is an aircraft carrier" thing got resparked.

Some older designs of warships looked like they should have something in the boat handling spaces. The older battleship designs with midship turrets probably influence that idea, compared to the later battleships where everything seems more compact.
The open space makes sense for its purpose, but does make the aesthetics seem asymmetrical. On civilian ships you would see things added to fill space or make things look different. The Olympic class liners of the White Star Line only needed 3 funnels, but a 4th false funnel was added to the design to imply more power. On warships, that would just be a waste of money.

Compare for example, Texas to West Virginia, then both of them to Washington.

Attention everyone.

Historic Aviation magazine (wait for the irony) has a 1/535 scale Missouri for $30 USD made by Revell. Get your nearly 2 feet long Mo because I haven't seen one this cheap since last summer.

The same kit is in stock at my local Hobby Lobby for about the same price. One of the few ship kits they stock. I'm not impressed with Hobby Lobby's model selection at all.

Don't buy it. I have it as the first ship I tried to make, key word try. I gave up 25% cuz my low skill, 25% no desire, mostly due to the 50% because it has not been updated in over 20 years. I posted a while ago about this in passing but to give you an example, the bow isn't even right. It's a hybrid clipper and what it is actually supposed to be. Hell, the turrets make me cringe.

Look at the bow. Look at the turrets. Look how short the turret protrusions (I refuse to call those on the model rangefinders) are.
