A bit of an omake that struck me...

Hands held behind his back as the Summoning Ceremony continued, Rear Admiral Russel Shepard barely held back a sigh. While the Navy was still summoning ships, the amount that the Coast Guard had been summoning had slowed to a trickle. And now here he was trying yet again to get another ship. Feeling a hand pat him on the arm though, Shepard looked beside him to see Alex, as USCGC Alexander Hamilton liked to be called, giving him a smile. "I got a good feeling about this, Sir."

Frowning, Shepard shook his head. "That makes one of us at least." With a grimace, he sighed. "You know that the Navy has been pushing to be granted use of our Summoning Chambers for a while now. if we don't manage something soon..."

All his Secretary Ship did was shake her head. "We will. If that Professor out west, Crowning, is right then we should have sank enough tonnage of Abyssal Subs for at least some..." It was then that she felt something and whipped her head around to look at the pool. "... Thing..."

Eyes wide, Shepard turned toward the water himself. "Is something coming through?"

Slowly, Alex nodded. "I think so..."

Then there was a disturbance on the water and a woman appeared standing on it. She looked older then any of the other Coast Guard shipgirls and was wearing a dress right out of the 1900s. However, she wore a Coast Guard uniform jacket over the dress as she looked around. More odd though was what looked like a length of board on one arm. Frowning, Shepard furrowed his eyebrows and was about to say something when Campbell spoke up. "COBB! YOU'RE BACK!"

Having spotted the Cutter, the woman's eyes widened. "Campbell...?" It was then that she spotted the Admiral and saluted. "Um... Sir! USCGS Cobb, WPG-181 reporting!"

It took a moment for Shepard to place the name, but once he did he returned the salute with a grin that boarded on the savage. He was just able to hold back his laughter at their good luck. "Good to have you back, Cobb. Ready to kill some Subs?"

With a smile on her face, Cobb, the world's first Helicopter Carrier, nodded. "That was what I was supposed to do, Sir. Now I get to do it."

Yes, I know the rules about Carriers. But this was too good to pass up and unlike other Carriers, Cobb didn't get to prove herself. She was a modification of the coastal Steamboat, SS Governor Cobb and was supposed to carry helicopters for ASW work. However, by the time that she was ready, the Uboat threat had dropped to the point where they didn't bother using her for such, mainly just training. She was finally scrapped because, due to her age, she spent a lot of time in the docks getting repaired. hence, her coming back to prove herself at what she was supposed to do.

Yes.

Poor Sara, poor Sky's hand.

And his wallet. You know Shinano's appetite? Forrestal-class carriers are bigger. And, I have no doubt, hungrier.

Though if the Navy picks up the tab, it becomes poor kitchen staff.

(Not trying to minimize what you've said, Harry. Just saying the pain doesn't stop once the kid's born.)

But don't you only have to refuel a Nuclear powered CV after a ridiculous amount of time? I mean, her appetite for bauxite is going to be INSANE but her fuel cost meh? guess if it depends on if we lump AVGAS in with bauxite (cause planes) or fuel

Forrestals are actually the second last "conventional" supercarriers the United States Navy built. Meaning that they don't use nuclear propulsion to move.

(I really want a USS Saratoga museum. Please make it so.)

Saratoga has already been towed to the scrapyard, and the scrapping process begun.

Any nuclear US Navy ship has a 'N' in the hull designation, like CVN-65 USS Enterprise, CGN-38 USS Virginia or SSN-711 USS San Francisco. Which, by the way, is a tough little submarine. She hit a seamount and made it to port.

First supercarriers period. Which makes Minitoga the second super carrier ever.

Also, the teasing is real.

Not to start modern weapons and abbysals argument again, but question to @theJMPer
Given that there will be land action that uses conventional forces, is there possibility to use Support Carrier to not only field late-war planes, but actually support conventional forces - carry extra fuel/ammo/etc. Or even temporarily deck-park some helicopters.

Interactions between shipgirl and conventional forces seem to go... very strangely. We've been seeing this ever since Jersey's observation plane landed at a real naval base back in the early chapters.

EDIT: Correction, that was technically an Air Force base. It's on the first page, though.

[Checks] Chapter seven.

That whole conversation kicked off after @theJMPer put steel hull heli carrier LHD-6 USS Bonhomme Richard on an op alongside Shinano.

In this fic, shipgirls > everything.

Zoomy base, technically.

Bonnie Dick is there to support her Marines while they storm the beaches of Woody Island.

Steel-hulled ships can compete with shipgirls or Abyssals, but only under the right conditions, and generally not when Abyssal battleships show up.

Based on the way TheJMPer has described things, it seems very likely that steel-hull navies did succeed in taking significant numbers of Abyssals with them in the opening rounds of the war- just nowhere near as many as needed. However, said steel-hull navies are getting worn down by the war very rapidly, and new steel-hull warships cannot be built NEARLY as fast as the war is using them up... or nearly as fast as new shipgirls can be summoned.

Which is why the USN (overall) is significantly undergunned at the moment. Modern supercarrier fleet escort ships might do decently against Abyssals, but the actual carriers were sitting ducks.
