Lets also not forget that a moderator just posted in here not more than 2 days ago, either. So they are watching.

And Thor? You're directly arguing/pushing a topic(s) that the author/OP of the thread has told you numerous times to stop it. I HIGHLY recommend you pause in responding here, and go look up the forum rules on that very issue.

I kind of feel bad for delaying @Whiskey Golf because lewd ideas

But then I remember that he's the one who inspired me to bully all the ships in the first place

I BLAME YOU WHISKEY FOR UNLOCKING MY DEPRAVITY

Hey, question to anyone on the brain trust behind this story, is there going to be anything special happening on Halloween? More specifically, Samhain? I mean, I understand that this isn't a 'every supernatural being from mythology appears' story like Harry Leferts and that to summon new Ship Girls you need to sink Abyssal Girl tonnage but classically on Samhain the barriers between worlds are gone. It's believed that on Samhain there is s chance that you can slip into another world and get stuck there. Not just between life and death, but other realms such as the Fae.

Granted, I can see this working both ways in that Abysmal can more easily appear on Earth also.

As an omake, there could be a few fun shenanigans. But we're in mid-December in the story right now. So unfortunately the ability to tap that event has passed.

But I'm imagining some wackiness on Halloween myself. I'm partial to seeing Jersey decked out as John Matrix and Wash as a stereotypical ninja. With all the destroyers decked out like minions.

... Oh my god that would be ador-

I- I mean. (Coughs.) That- That sounds like an acceptable plan of action @Old Iron! Yes of course!

No I am not fidgeting or squeeing. That would- That would be improper hmyes.

Maybe an encounter with the legendary ghost ship the Flying Dutchman in the main story? I wonder how the various ship girls would react to see that ship appearing. It would certainly get into the holiday spirit of things for Halloween, but then again it's probably not the best idea, as mariners consider the Flying Dutchman one of the worst omens you can get, and a portent of doom, but then again for who? The Good Guys or the Bad Guys?

Please do not discuss modern weapons versus Abyssals unless you are me, someone who's written a canonized Omake, someone who puts lots of thought and effort into their posts (Wiskey or RDfox), or someone with actual experience with the thing in question (Breakaway25.)
Sorry for quoting an old post, but whiskey quoted it as part of the present debate, and I had to clear something up for my socially addled self. I hope JMP isn't saying that only these...eight people can discuss that in thread. I mean, other people are capable of putting effort into their posts. And I kind of liked the discussions where lots of people got to weigh in. I get the general idea of the post, but I'm wondering how restrictive it is. Sorry if I'm hugely missing the point or something, I usually suck at reading social cues.

The main thrust is "don't try and break the rules of the universe." Also, don't mil-wank. Just... look at what Thor does and do the opposite of that.

I think those are meant to be more examples/standards of quality, rather than hard-and-fast limits.
EDIT: Poi'd.

Hm.

If I were writing a Kancolle Britain, a project I'm not really up for...

Samhain juuuust might be the day the Abyssal shades of the Spanish Armada return to wreak havoc along the Channel. And yes, Abyssal sailgirls manage to be scary. They're numerous, and they're eerier than normal, and they keep just fading when you think you've got them in your sights.

And suddenly all those sailgirls the British keep summoning* don't seem so pointless... it's time for one more night at the opera.

I do not feel up for writing this. :(

*(In my headcanon, anyway, it's their version of getting a blimpcat; they've got a loooot of old sailing ships who keep accidentally appearing when they meant to get a WWII warship)

The big problem is that 'rearming' shipgirls with weapons fundamentally different from what they had in real life doesn't seem to work very well.
So equipping them with sonar or ASW weapons would be hard; at most they could spot surfaced submarines. And they'd be slow and (without some kind of second-order leveling effect) unable to survive a gunnery action against a surfaced submarine's deck gun.

Which is why I favor the idea that the sailgirls seem utterly irrelevant, or nearly so, until suddenly they turn out to be very very valuable, only they're effectively fighting a separate and parallel war to the one waged by the steelgirls.

The main thrust is "don't try and break the rules of the universe."

Subject as always to Rule of Cool / Narrative Needs.
Example1: Shinano on USA-Japan convoy duty due to resources, except when she's on Bonins escort because she needs a Crowning Moment of Awesome.
Example2: Leveling Effect means B-52s can't hit a large stationary target with precision munitions, because Jersey needs to see her DD get Kill Ordered. Leveling Effect later on means B-1s can accurately drop dumb bombs on a moving ship, but they don't do much damage; because Big T needs *her* CMoA.

In both cases the leveling effect caused the air attacks to be 'reset' to the effectiveness comparable attacks would have during World War Two, when low-level attacks against warships tended to cause at least minor damage, while high-altitude attacks usually didn't.

Meh... high level bombing against stationary targets the size of Habbakkuk in clear air worked (B-29s, Lancasters).

The general rule is narrative needs: whatever helps cute battleships do cute battlethings... plus Taffy 3, and Shinano; but those are close enough to BBs if you squint.

Well, it's basically established that carriergirls would upset the paradigm if they were present in sufficient numbers... so the narrative need is served, not by nerfing carriers, but by not having them appear.

That was kind of my point. If carriers were present in quantity or quality (as in, fleet carriers) it would be highly disruptive to the basic paradigm because carriers WOULD have that effect. The author has confirmed this.

For this reason, instead of 'changing the rules' to nerf fleet carriergirls (as missile cruisers and B-52s have been nerfed), he simply removes the fleet carriers from the narrative altogether.

To me, this is a different literary approach, and one that I appreciate.

Note: A bit of a comparision between some proposed ships of the USSR, particularly their fast battleship the Sovestky Soyuz and an Iowa class inbound, if you are well informed about the two ship classes don't read the following section but simply skip to the end, but if not go right ahead, as bias free as possible, stating just the facts

Still, I would certainly love to see Jersey go barrel to barrel Sovetsky Soyuz class, Kronshtadt class, or Stalingrad class ships, particularly the Sovetsky Soyuz class as it's pretty much the USSR's version of an Iowa class Fast Battleship, four were laid down but weren't finished due to WWII kicking off. Mainly because, we get to find out how well USSR's proposed and even laid down battleships but never finished would stand up to an Iowa class, as a matter of fact let's compare a Sovetsky Soyuz class and an Iowa class, I mean the Sovetsky Soyuz class would have had pretty good armor if USSR Naval Armor Production was up to snuff. Armament is about the same nine 16in/50 caliber shells, but the Soviet one is much faster in the muzzle velocity, hurling a 2,443 pound AP Round at some 2,854 feet per second which is rather insane for a gun of that size, but it fires a lighter round and suffered from dispersion problems due to low quality powder and shells -not sure if the Abyssals would have fixed that issue-, but it's secondary battery has a metric ton of dakka, sadly it's sorely laking in the AA department. On the flipside, Jersey is faster, has better armor -while I do realize that both an Iowa class Battleship and a Sovetsky Soyuz class have pretty much the exact same thickness of armor an Iowa class has Special Treatment Steel which makes it's armor better-, arguably better main battery firepower, a larger AA Battery, twice the range, more manueverable, Radar GFCS meaning she's more accurate with her gunfire, the absolutely incredible Ford Mk IA Gun Fire Control Computer meaning she can correct her fire better.

Bottomline, depending on how the Abyssals modify a Soviet Sovetsky Soyuz class Battleship, an Iowa class would either stomp one into the ground or they would be about even in terms of capabilities, with the exception of first salvo capability and fire correction capability that would go to the Iowa class, but a Sovetsky Soyuz class is bound to be just as tough as an Iowa class, it certainly has that capability, but it's Secondary battery is even more potent., at least it seems on paper when compared to an Iowa class Fast Battleship, compared to a Yamato class not so much, needless to say, you are in a destroyer or a destroyer girl and you don't have real long range fish, making a torpedo attack on this thing would be suicide.

Hell if you compare a Sovetsky Soyuz and an Iowa class side-by-side via Shipbucket, they look very similar, three gun turrets mounting three guns each, two funnels, somewhat similar looking bow, somewhat similar looking conning tower, aircraft catapult mounted aft granted that's where most ships mounted their aircraft catapult. The only differences is the Sovestky Soyuz class has four anchors forward, more turrets with it's secondary armament adorning it's sides, different funnel design, little shorter Conning tower, and a few other things, most notable is that the Sovestky Soyuz class is a few feet shorter than an Iowa class Fast Battleship, but it is wider and has less draught than an Iowa class.

Comparison ends here

Besides Jersey did say this about sinking Panzerschiffs "Since when is killing Nazis ever the wrong option?" I wonder what she might say about shooting at Abyssal Communist Ships? That is one question that sort of needs answering. Not to mention, it would probably be a rather badass fight between the two, particularly if the secondaries get involved, with shells filling the air between the two ships with such intensity you could could figuratively speaking walk on it from one ship to the other.

Also, to tell you the truth, while Aircraft Carriers are awesome in terms of force projection, nothing says "Speak softly and carry big stick" like a Battleship does. Because when it comes to bombarding your enemy their is making him hide in a fighting hole aka Foxhole and making him want to be anywhere but that Foxhole when under bombardment. Not to mention, they also look better, particularly in the WWII Layouts where they look like they can where they want within reason, do what they want, and simply not give a fuck.

Methinks such comparisons are better suited to a thread more dedicated to it when not directly related to BelBat.

In news more directly related to BelBat, I am making progress on the next chapter. This chapter may contain: EPIC SUMMONING because caps lock for cruise control, Mutsu's boilers finally hitting their operational limit, Arizona declaring her secret love for redacted, HIei being Hiei, a ring of legendary and supreme power being discovered, or Yamashiro deciding to join the Army!

Disclaimer: The events described may differ in the final product, both in content and number.

You know what? I'm giving Thor a like.

YES, his post was kind of a digression, but it's broadly in line with the topics of discussion to talk about a ship that might make an interesting match-up for Jersey. Especially one that pushes her "FUCK COMMUNISM" buttons.

His post ain't perfect, but if he was like this all the time, I for one wouldn't have problems with him.
