As Multiverses Colide (A Multiversal Crossover, Where Starting In the 90's Things Change)

...Though...
[]The Cards and Blue Cards: You look at the old code and realize something… The Cards that Namco was creating were using… old code that you created, the basis of the Monsters to evolve. Meaning if you modified it, you could… make a super Card that could force digivolution. It was a gamble, and you didn't know if the code was even stable enough. But you had to try, for old-time sake. DC: ???

"The destruction of humanity. They are the ones that make us fight endless battles… that's what my rulers want. They just want to stop the battles, and the cruel gods from beyond."

There was a pause, and Duromon looked at you. "No. I never saw the reason for their hatred of humanity. We would have fought each other anyway, for far more stupider reasons, but they didn't want to, so they blamed the humans. If there was ever a reason to blame you for anything for a mistake, it would be for creating us."
The company denies that the artist even exists, hell they have no payment or paper trails to even think that they aren't paying someone, or hiding the money.

Only the name, Sovereign.

It was more than enough to get you digging, but only enough to know that the company's power output and electrical bills skyrocketed after 1988 when they first released the Digimon card game and the franchise began.

You had questions, possibly, and ideas. But one stuck out to you the most.

What if Sovereign was a link to the digital world, and that's how monsters were constantly added to the roster?

"Every time a game is played, a card is scanned into the calculator or tournament reader, and they are summoned out onto the Barrier, to fight. And then when they lose, they get destroyed and their data harvested until they get stronger to evolve… at least that is how they consider it."

Good god. "And it causes chaos for the entire digital world?"
...Pulling back various bits here, well...

We still got an unclear picture, but it seems things are rotten at Namco. We know they use the foundation of Wild Bunch code for their stuff, there is a possability that their 'fancy calculators' actually directly interface with the Digital world and start what is essentially gladiator fights to the death, someone going by a name that matches the name of the rulers is functionally the gatekeeper, deciding which species gets on the list of who can get called upon and is manipulating the company from the inside to break down the barrier. And of course, to make everything more complicated, the situation is being used as a reason everyone should unite under and obey their leadership, whom may or may not be connected with the predicament in the first place. 😅

America News Snippits May 1991
Wouldn't be surprised if the controversy surrounding the Digimon 'digital calculators' escalate due to concerns about the code foundation raised by hobbyist investigators, while Mr. Pegasus fans the flames to limit it's impact due to their answer, the Duel Disks not being invented yet.

Edit:
America News Snippits May 1991

"Bandai Namco faces even more uncertainty as their card fighter EX devices face increased scrutiny over implications of it's shared foundation with the Wild Bunch Project."
-CNNBC
"Maximillion Pegasus raises concerns over how exactly Namco may have managed to make their calculators work, in response to Bandai Namco's statement about them being critical for play."

"Net Safety becomes top concern as coders highlight concerns about Digimon Card game sharing code from the foundational Wild Bunch Project."
-MSNBC

"Bandai Namco blasted for being tone-death as they respond to doubts by doubling down on their card fighter EX devices, dismissing concerns and incensing the community of pure card players at the perceived insult."
-New York Times

"Sovereign: The Enigmatic artist that doesn't exist, at least according to Bandai Namco."

"Investigations throughout the code base of video games have found nothing. Investigator state,' We have no clue if there is even anything to find. Video games are by design self-contained experiences, designed to give a relatively curated experience. Short of an ill-advised attempt to borrow the code used to make the first digimon, I don't think we'd be able to see if anything even exists by sheer dint of any differences being too small to see.'"

"Reports coming around the world about card fighter EX devices mysteriously changing form. Bandai Namco ensures people that everything is fine even as leaks hint they are as in the dark as we are."

"Bandai Namco: Controversy Magnet. Once again afflicted by controversy, this time, people are questioning if they themselves know the risks of their own game."
-CNN

"Much ado about nothing: The Digimon card fighter Controversy."

"David Xantos, leader of the corporate efforts on internet security calls out Namco Bandai for obstructing security efforts, Namco Bandai retaliates by calling their security efforts no different from Industrial Espionage."

"Congress locked in debates over a theoretical national internet security organization even as tensions and danger mount."

"Some Politicians are calling for a ban on all Digimon games."

"The blue card: A Trojan Horse?"

A/N: another possible USA news omake. And I get the feeling Namco is gonna end up being quite controversial due to the escalation going on.

You may notice there wasn't a rumor mill for last turn.

Technically this is seven Actions, but per the word of the QM…

[X] Plan Damage Control

Plan looks good.

The rumor mill being delayed due to magic elements coming out to play is…

Well, a LITTLE ominous.:V

Doesn't help just how much could fit under the frankly very wide umbrella that is magic.

I have recently just learnt that Psychonauts could possibly exist in this setting
Mainly cause when I looked up which year it was set in, the first result said somewhere between the decades 1980 and 1990, though I could've just been given false information

Edit: Also it got released during 2005 so it fits the release date criteria

Digimon tourney.
Digimon tourney.

Digicard said:
Hey. got an idea. Know those new cards that came out recently? It's set up for defense dominance, enough I am pretty sure we could push for the longest game ever, or at least long enough for the organizers or the hardware itself to lose patience. You know, pop out of our little break for just one game to both experiment and a little prank on the company?
TheRenaQueen said:
Well, I might be up for one game, just...
Not sure if we'd actually manage to just get our match, especially given they may also be aware of that detail.
Digicard said:
That's the brilliant part, because of the exodus from Bandai Namco's behavior, those skilled enough to exploit it, like us whom are not playing 'properly'. And they'd let us have an exception match, given the bad PR and the slump the competitive scene is facing thanks to their own actions. They'd try and drag us back in, but I think we can handle that.
TheRenaQueen said:
There is one problem though. I never bothered to buy a new reader after the incident changed mine, and I really would rather not risk using it.
Digicard said:
No need to worry about buying one, I am sure they'd be happy to lend one. After all, the world has been waiting quite a while for us to meet in a tournament.

"In a major Publicity stunt, Bandai Namco convinces retired champions Tina Butler and Harry Ludwig to hold an Expedition match."

"In an unexpected turn of events, two Digimon Card Game legends come out of retirement for a game against each other."

In the outskirts of New York, is the venue where the tournament, and most importantly, exhibition match is to be held. With the system hooked up on the big screen so the viewers can watch the simulated action along with the two tournament veterans squaring off in the stage. The contestants in position, the hardware activates and the simulation begins with a Renamon and Armadillomon appearing on the field.

"Tina opens aggressively with a speed card as Renamon charges in."

Tina makes the first move by sweeping a speed card into her device, on the screen Renamon takes off, using the speed to get in close. But Harry counters with an iron defense card, leaving Renamon to retreat before Armadillomon can punish the aggression. Armadillomon then retaliates by curling up and effectively turning himself into a bolder, ready to use Iron defense and a freshly deployed speed card to it's fullest. Tina quickly uses a halberd card, allowing Renamon to block the rolling armadillo, leveling the playing field as the Halberd and effects of Iron defense destroy each other. Tina deploys an attack card and Harry a defense card, as Renamon tests Armadillomon's defenses with thrown sharpened leaves, to little effect. Seeing that there is no effect, Renamon closes the distance, as Armadillomon does the same, trading blows as the two human duelists start to get into a rhythm.

Harry deploys a wing card to give Armadillomon mobility while Tina deploys a spear card giving Renamon a reach advantage. A short-lived stalemate as a speed card boosting Armadillomon allows her to break through Renamon's guard and deny the spear, only for Renemon to force Armadillomon back with the help of an attack boost card. The duelists start to get into the zone as Harry pulls out a spike card, providing a ranged option while Tina uses a stamina card to bolster Renamon's energy. Armadillomon puts the new ability to use, with both sides trading shots, with Harry pulling an accuracy card to better deal with Renamon's mobility while Tina brings out a shield card, continuing the stalemate as Renamon's acrobatics are less able to dodge while Renamon can use the shield to provide some cover. In the background, a certain official notices something and rushes to the nearest phone, while the two Digimon probe each other, while the tamers try to tip the odds through cards. Then, the stalemate is broken with the Iron defense card coming out, and a metal clad Armadillomon rolls her way to Renamon, who narrowly dodges the first run by with a speed card boost, followed by getting a hammer card which was used to stop the rolling metal armadillo, but broke from the force generated by the card boosted attack. By now both humans are fully in the zone, focused on the cards and the fight while the two digimon refuse to disengage, fighting in close quarters. Renamon's martial arts and Armadillomon's shell makes for an even engagement as the speed of card deployments increase, with boosts, weapons, and armor preventing either side from taking and keeping a sufficient advantage.

Until, so engrossed in the duel, the two humans at the same time pull and scan their blue cards that they left in their decks, activating their hidden function as a Namco official, just after getting off the phone with their superiors rushes into the room.

Outside the venue, a group of guards stand watch. Not the usual kind given the short time period and other concerns led Bandai Namco to recruit a merc company to handle event security.

"Why did we bring a rocket launcher again?" Bill asks, double checking the Rocket launchers condition very carefully.

"Rule one in the business, prepare for anything, double when we are dealing with unusual stuff. And with the controversy surrounding it, protecting a Digimon card game venue qualifies. It's better to have it and not need it than to not have it and need it." Hudson states.

A van drives up and a bunch of people in the almost stereotypical black suits and sunglasses come out fully armed. The outfit responds by preparing for a possible fight.

"May I ask what brings you to this place? Don't think you-" Hudson get's interrupted mid-sentance.

"We need access to the building. This is a secret government operation way above the pay grade of mere mercenaries." The man whom seems to be the leader of the squad states, brooking no arguement.

"We are security for a PUBLIC EVENT, there is who knows how many cameras filming what is going on in there. So, you have a badge or what?" Hudson replies testily, wondering what they are trying to do, while Bill notices something going on with the van.

"You can let us through, or you would at best be arrested for impeding a very important investigation, or dead." The man states plainly, clearly intending to fight his way in if need be.

Bill, identifying that the van somehow has a hidden flack gun in it, chose to destroy it before they could use it, and had the means to do so. And thus, the explosion of the van set off a firefight between the security and a mysterious group.

"So NOW Bandai Namco are actually BOTHERING to do something. In front of all of these cameras, with the world being made aware of what you had been dismissing as baseless concerns, being shown as reality. Your company ignored the rumors that were circulating, even as you used code from the Wild Bunch for your 'fancy calculators'. You didn't say ANYTHING when Task Force Shield first formed, you loudly dismissed concerns as irrelevant and baseless when Janyu Wong called out the UN member nations for ignoring the possible dangers. When people insisted on worrying, a public statement was made DEMEANING us for actually caring for what could put people at risk, and at how exactly your tech worked." Tina and Harry are visibly furious, with Tina vocalizing her frustrations while the official could do little but try and look sympathetic. Meanwhile, a Renamon and an Armadillomon are standing there, seemingly looking awkward and confused at this whole thing.

"When the Blue cards appeared, you done nothing. When a bunch of your tech mysteriously changes, INCLUDING my own, you dismissed all concerns and insisted again and again everything was under control. AND NOW you actually care! Time and time again, the company has been too busy trying to dismiss any concerns and cover up problems that could at best be said to be caused by laziness, and at worse by outright malice. I quite frankly don't trust that you won't simply try to shove this incident under the rug, to continue the company policy to hide and deny that anything could possibly be going wrong. So no, I will not co-operate with your request."
-Excerpt from the film covering the Incident

A/N: General idea is basically, the handling of the whole Digimon related stuff has negatively impacted the card game as many veteran players dropped off for a while, between the uncertainty and unknown risks. And basically, a duo tries something, but ends up causing a very PUBLIC incident in an event which the company meant to reassure people of the sport and the systems safety, a group with the means to identify such events charge in, not knowing of the event they are crashing and getting into a fight with unusually armed guards due to mercs being hired between the time crunch and the theoretical possibility of fighting Digimon. While the event itself, the staff didn't think to check the deck, or realize the potential of blue cards, while the one in the know found out too late, and found him/herself doing damage control with two very unamused new tamers whom added gasoline to the fire as one start to vent at the man after a poor attempt to try and talk them into getting the two Digimon to follow him somewhere.

No clue how much of this could be canon. But had an idea and typed it out.

Edit: Fixed some spelling and grammar.
