Engineers

Kibe Koume, 26, Office Manager
Tiny & angry, Kibe went to school in Albia, picking up the language, the religion, and a fuckload of swear words. Speaks Albian.
Mechanical +2, Ballistics +1
Office Manager: If Kibe is not assigned to a team, the Office Stress is reduced by 1.

Sakane Jun, 26, Second Team Leader
A soured patriot, Sakane is married and has a young child being raised gender-neutrally. His two brothers who fought in the war.
Structural +2, Aerodynamics +1
Team Leader: If there are any additional projects, Sakane will lead them.
Joinery: Sakane has training in the traditional Akitsukuni carpentry art of joinery, creating complex self-supporting joints with no fasteners or glue. When working with non-monocoque wooden spars or ribs, +1 Structural.

Tezuka Kenji, ???
A stoner with occasional flashes of insight. Nobody really knows what he does, but he's probably useful?
Aerodynamics +2, Chemical +1
Flashes of Brilliance: Each natural 10 rolled by any team Tezuka is assigned to gives +1 forward to the next research roll.

Hasegawa Morio, 26
A hopeless nerd with a photography habit, mostly on account of developing his own film, Hasegawa seems to do nothing but work and stack card houses, but somehow has an incredible attractive boyfriend. Speaks Gallian.
Chemical +2, Ballistic +1
Silent Workhorse: Hasegawa can work on two different projects at once for no cost to Office Stress, providing they use different stats.

Kawamura Yosai, 25.
Serially successful womanizer and incredibly attractive, Kawamura doesn't seem to have much of a personality outside of seducing women. Well, except for that time he seduced Asuka, which nobody talks about. Speaks Dyske.
Structural +2, Electrical +1, Social +1
Easily Distracted: If Kawamura is working on the same team as a female or non-binary employee, the team is at -1d10.

Koide Hatsu, 24.
One of the few female graduates of an Akitsukuni engineering school, Koide is brilliant and incredibly driven, but her first job at Akibara was both humiliating and exposed her to an abusive coworker. Her father is a rich businessman with factories in Joseon, and she's engaged to Ken from Castles of Steel. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +2, Structural +1
No Sleep: If you let her, Koide will work herself to death. She can work a second project for no Office Stress, but all her stats will be reduced to 1 for the routine.

Kobayashi Ayao, ???
Disowned heiress of the Kobayashi family, all Kobayashi wanted was a career and to be a modern woman. For her trouble, a cousin threw acid on her, scarring her face, neck, much of her torso, and her left arm. Despite appearing serene and above it all, she's actually an avowed communist activist and baseball player.
Aerodynamics +2, Social +2

Adachi Ren, 24
Adachi learned chemistry from her father, one of the most famous chemical engineers in the country, rather than through formal schooling. She's married, has a kid, and takes spirituality very seriously. Yes, you did the math right, she had Yuki when she was 17. It's 1912, folks.
Chemical +2, Electrical +1
Young Mother: Adachi will cause double Office Stress if she has to work multiple tasks.

Uyeno Sei, Ballistics Engineer, 31.
The oldest member of the crew, this is Uyeno's second career. Her first was as an officer in the Imperial Navy with specialized technical training: her very promising career was cut short by her transition. Her work in a naval arsenal on machine-guns landed her the job here. Briefly dated Satomi (the age range is a bit creepy but again, 1912), she's missing a piece of her ear and is deaf on that side, from an exploding cannon. Recently returned from Varnmark from experimental surgery, she's known for her skill navigating gendered bureaucracy.
Ballistic +3

Mi Kyung-Jae, 23
A recent graduate of the Imperial College of Heijo, Mi is from the recently annexed territory of Joseon. For those keeping track at home, that means he's a Korean national living in Imperial Japan in 1912. We haven't seen much of his personality because he's rightfully terrified of everything around him. He has a specialty in endurance engine design and modification. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +1, Chemical +1
Endurance Engines: Mi has an excellent understanding of metallurgy and tolerances. Any engine he works on gains +1 Reliability if a 16+ is rolled.
Pulsejet Wizard: Mi is now one of the world's leading experts on the pulsejet engine. He can be given his own project to custom-craft pulsejet engines, and he gives +1 to any pulsejet-related project.
Joseon National: Mi does not have security clearance to work on any top-secret projects.

Miyoshi Shigeri, 23.
A non-binary person and admirer of Asuka's work, they were in an support role in the Army before joining the company.
Structural +1, Mechanical +1, Aerodynamic +1
Mechanic: Miyoshi has some experience repairing and refurbishing aircraft. They get +1 if assigned on the clean-up phase.

Other Employees
- Ohara Satomi, 22, Mr. Ohara's niece and the company test pilot, Ohara is a general lesbian disaster. She's good at flying planes, driving cars, and kissing girls. She's bad at being patient, being respectable, and sticking to literally anyones conceptions of gender roles. Deeply in lesbians with Coralie D'Amboise.
- Fujkikawa Sotatsu, old, modelmaker. He's an old man and toymaker and we don't see much of him because he locks himself in his workshop a lot. He's friends with Kawamura?

Assets
- Engine Test Rig (Allows engine tweaking and optimization.
- Wind Tunnel (+1 Aerodynamics)
- Rapid Prototype Lab (+1 Clean Up)
Expanded Cast

Akitsukuni Industry
- Homura Mohoko: Head Engine Designer for Kobayashi. First female engineer in the country. A lot of sex appeal.
- Okumura: Head of Akibara aircraft design.
- Yamanaka Hajime: Kobayashi engineer. Young and eager.
- Igarashi Masazumi: Kobayashi engineer. Reserved and experienced.
- Admiral Akibara Toru: Imperial Navy Admiral. Maximum nepotism. Maximum douchebag.
- Lt.Cmnd Akibara Shinzo: The above's son. A hottie but very forward.

Character Families
- Matsura(?) Mizuko: Asuka's sister. Was paralyzed in an accident in Asuka's first flight. Lives Elsewhere and is married now. Can't forgive Asuka, even though she's tried.
- Adachi Motoki: Adachi's husband, an accountant. Legally blind.
- Adachi Yuki: Adachi's 7 year old daughter and wannabe pilot. Very adorable.
- Yachi's Brother: Exists.
- Sakane's Wife: Exists. Drives him a bit crazy, but he loves her.
- Yachi's Brother's Wife: Exists. Is statistically likely to be pregnant.
- Lt. Coralie D'Amboise: Gallian pilot in exile. Satomi's girlfriend. 25. Accomplished bisexual duelist. She flew in the war for a single day, and for her troubles got a hole blown in her cheek and had her left arm paralyzed.

Akisukuni Army & Ex-Army
- Lt. Torio Tanaka: Yachi's former observer as an enlisted man. Was jumped up to fly Ducks and lost a leg on his first mission. A trained painter, married to Torio Saya.
- Captain Amari Shiro: A Dragonfly pilot who ended up flying as Yachi's partner. Kind of delightfully twinky. They sorta slept together at one point, which wasn't great. He lost his previous boyfriend in the April Offensive and turned his plane into a shrine. He was shot in the gut and is still recovering.
- Major Izuhara: Logistics officer, Imperial Army, this bespectled officer stood up to the Caspian Crown Prince and accidentally kicked off the Akitsikuni-Caspian War. The guilt was so much that, after almost a year of running Army procurement, he shot himself in a phone both.
- Captain Nakai Sekien: Army scout pilot. First person to drop a bomb from an airplane, later head of the Duck Squadrons.
- Captain Teshima: A Desk pilot that fought with Yachi. Lost an arm in the process, took over for Major Izuhara after his death. Seems cheery despite it all.
- Captain Nashio: A real piece of shit dude and probably a rapist, he's also a war hero as the second-highest scoring ace on the Akitsukuni side. He was a young shitty kid in way over his head but it's no excuse.
- Lt. Kinjo: Kind of a dumb lump and Nashio's friend, one of the desk pilots. Dead at 19.
- Lt. Okazaki: Yachi's friend from before the war and pilot, he died in a spin in his dragonfly. His death probably hit Yachi the hardest.

Westerners
- Rose & Antoinette Sears: Pioneers of flight. Sisters. Black in 1910s not!America. Yikes.
- Timina Guasti: Famous aircraft designer from Otrusia. Likes big planes and green.
- Prince Protasov Vasilyevich: Crown Prince of Great Caspia. Real dick. You gotta hand it to him though, a decent flier.
- Count von Zeppelin: Invented rigid airships. Runs a successful airline business. Damned impressive.
- Bennhold: Aircraft Engineer. Experimenting with metal aircraft.
- Aileen Middlemiss: Albian reporter for the Artimis Times. Well meaning and oblivious.

[JK] Go start a car company. Screw making planes, the way of the future is cars!

Props if anyone makes that connection.

Tandem Amphib (find some D frog name)

This plane assumes best case tandem pod math (each engine gets its power rounded individually, so each one has 12.6 rounding to 13 power, 26 in total @open_sketchbook please confirm this is right). My goal was to mostly keep up with the faster designs over the home islands as an amphib while maintaining enough range for the colonies on a single engine.

  • Con: Not the fastest plane in the world. No crew luggage allowance. Not so great toughness. Max range involves spending time at 140-150 kph
Appearance/layout details for @4WheelSword:
Shoulder wing equal area tandem plane. The wings are considerably narrower than other entries, and the fuselage is a little shorter. The rear wing is just ahead of the rudder, and the forward wing is just aft of the midpoint. The tandem pod is above the rear wing on struts with a radiator attached. The landing gear is a hybrid float.

(con) we don't know if there's a spark here.
(pro) we share a common and important life experience and bond over it.

leaning towards these? Though it's mechanically optimal to go all con or all pro...

I should probably make sure these things are possible given Caproni and stuff. But yikes!

EDIT: also, why are people ducking out of the thread? I don't understand.

I've been operating on the assumption that they would round down to 12, because most things in this game always round down.

Otherwise that looks pretty neat. Did you account for the extra cost of engine starters, though? 2-3 per engine depending on starter type iirc.

Yes. Yikes indeed. But if we go with the set of rules I suggested, then I've got something with really nice numbers. I've even got a kind of silly technicality to argue on the two wings requirement, not that I expect it to convince anyone who is inclined to hold us too it too closely.

I did not, I don't see them in the rules, but I may just be blind. What are my options?
They're in the Engine Builder 2.0:
  • Electric Starter, 3þ/円: Uses 1 electrical charge to start (and therefore requires a battery and some way to charge it)
  • Pneumatic Starter, 3þ/円: Adds a 1 Mass Air Tank to the Vital Parts list. Loud.
  • Pull & Spring Starters, 2þ/円: Requires the operator to spend 15-30 seconds cranking a flywheel or winding a spring before starting.
  • Shotgun Starter, 3þ/円: Requires a special blank shotgun shell. Reliable, but requires keeping track of and loading the shells.

REBELLION IT IS THEN :V
[X] we share a common and important life experience and bond over it.
[X] we didn't get a fair shot at it last time. we deserve another chance.
[X] asuka feels like this is cheating on yachi.
As mentioned earlier, this is what i feel is most true to what i've gotten from the story, as well as being some of the healthier options, and i think thats worth the fact that its basically begging for a tie, with 2 pros 1 con :V

Edit: also, random thought while copying those over for voting...i feel like theres something thematic about these bullet points all being bereft of capitalization and the like, but i'm too sleepy to get farther than "huh that exists" mentally :p

EDIT: also, why are people ducking out of the thread? I don't understand.

As the self-evidently wisest and healthiest exemplar of voter behavior(/s), perhaps I can shed some light. If we don't vote on the scary, messy thing that we don't fully understand the consequences of and might blow up in the faces of these characters we've become emotionally invested in, we can dodge emotional responsibility for it and focus on feeling sad and disappointed instead of guilty and ruminate on how we should have voted/argued differently if it does go badly.

That said, Imma go ahead and shoot myself in the foot now, because humans are big balls of self-contradiction.

[X] we share a common and important life experience and bond over it.

Damn it. Don't you hate it when there is no clear best option, the choices are tearing you in two directions, or you cant see a solution that equals make everyone happy? Whats that you say? Nuance? Pish Posh! This is the internet, we always get what we want!

*ahem*

Being serious, this is hard. But this is what I am going for:
[X] We share a common and important life experience and bond over it.
[X] Asuka feels like this is cheating on yachi.

Are we allowed to only vote for 2 of the three? Cause I am that conflicted, and cant think of a good argument to write in at this time.

The landing gear is a hybrid float.
I made the above design better by adding an extreme negative stagger shoulder wing above the forward wing (grabbing both the inline tandem and the extreme negative stagger biplane bonuses), lowering the tandem wings to mid wings and redistributing the wing area with 14 span, 12 area for both tandem mid wings and 15 span, 14 area for the shoulder wing.
The reinforcements went from 1 metal, 1 wood and 2 truss to 1 wood and 3 truss.
With the most pessimistic assumptions on tandem pod engine power it drops 10kph speed in both dual and single engine modes.

    • With one Streamlining optimization: 220kph at sea level (150kph single engine)
    • With one Lightening optimization: 10 fuel uses (2 full+ 16 single engine)
  • Pro: All Wood, Amphibious, bathroom, cabin heat, flight stress 1, positive stability (but not too high!), 29 strain, engine Reliability +3,.
  • Con: Not the fastest plane in the world. No crew luggage allowance. Not so great toughness. Max range involves spending time at 140-150 kph, not much benefit from lightening.
Appearance/layout details for @4WheelSword:
Mid wing equal area tandem plane with an extreme negative stagger shoulder wing above the forward mid wing. The wings are considerably narrower than other entries, and the fuselage is a little shorter. The intent is to break the plane into 2 sections behind the rear wing for fuel, 6 sections between the rear wing and the main wings for passengers and 3 sections in front of the main wings for cargo and pilots. The tandem pod sits above the plane just forward of the rear wing on struts. The landing gear is a hybrid float.

Hrm. On the one hand I want to tactically vote to maximize chances of a sweep for either pro or con, but on the other hand - despite the clear overarching tendency toward pro - I really do want to see the "Asuka feels like this is cheating on Yachi" point addressed, since that question is pretty clearly still up in the air in terms of the boundaries of their relationship.

Eh, hell with it, sacrificing all on the altar of optimization is for the planes half of the quest.

[X] asuka feels like this is cheating on yachi.

Not sure what other points I'd like to vote in at the moment, but this one definitely seems important.

I had hoped to receive rules clarifications before revealing this, since it combines tandem and biplane wing rules in a way that was not originally intended (even though there is an acknowledged need for support for combining them in some way). Going to go ahead anyway, though, because it is pretty special. It also currently uses the same farman + booms+rearward engine trick as the Dagon (though this isn't essential), uses the wing bridge of doom thing that so horrified everyone, and answers a question no one had ever asked: "what do you get when you cross a Blériot III and a Savoia-Marchetti S.55?" Not going to lie, this is weird as hell, quite possibly weirder than the Dagon, but the numbers are really great and it meets all our requirements. It is the fastest we have seen, and in economy mode it blows everything else out of the water on range. And yes, I claim that it does have just two wings. They are clearly just bent into a big, flat hoop and joined at the ends for strength. Perfectly normal single wings. Obviously.

I'm tentatively calling it the "double-hoop" because I think the marketing department wouldn't approve of more evocative names like "dreadful", "danger-bridge", "derangement", "death trap" and "daftness". This thing is actually pretty safe in game terms, bridge of doom aside, and there's probably a case to be made for most major elements of this design, at some point, in some other very different context, but taken together no one who has any buisiness designing an aircraft would ever think of designing this.

So far as I can tell, the key thing here that got me such good numbers was being able to make the wings skinnier by having more total wing length to play with. The exotic configuration just helped to mitigate the various disadvantages quite a bit and allow for the center-line thrust the single engine efficiency mode called for.

    • With one Lightening optimization: 110kph stall, 19 fuel uses (39 on one engine)
  • Pro: Not made of paper, bathroom x2, cabin heat, under budget(if only just), positive stability (but not too high!), generous Strain/Toughness, engine Reliability +5, crew luggage allowance, fastest plane (if I recall the record correctly), center-line thrust, ideal control range covers entire flight envelope, economy mode with 2100km+ estimated range, weird as hell, bridge of death can double as a smoking area :V
  • Con: Can't get to Flight Stress 1 even with optimization. Based on rules of tentative legality. Flight attendant must cross bridge of death. Unrealistic and hideous. Some people who value the literal truth might think it has more than two wings, and thus doesn't meet our basic requirements. Weird as hell.
Appearance/layout details for @4WheelSword:
Fortunately, the worst of the weirdness is hidden behind the booms and can't be seen from the side, so this will look a bit less awful than it actually is. This is a twin boom plane, the booms of which are narrow passenger cabins with their own bathrooms and luggage compartments. There is a section in between and protruding ahead of them at the front center which features the cockpit, all the fuel, and a pusher engine, with the radiator just beneath it. The two booms are connected by a pair of long, very thin sets of closed biplane wings with a slight negative stagger, which I am picturing joining in a rounded curve rather than a straight vertical line, the bottom ones as a low wing, the upper ones as a parasol. The front set of wings features an in-wing nacelle on the parasol wing with the propeller above the cockpit section, as well as a terrifying foot bridge that provides connectivity between the three sections of the plane. The single vertical stabilizer is held in the center-rear farman tail style, anchored to the booms on either side in a way that helps brace them properly. Wood struts hold it together and strengthen the wings. The landing gear is a fairly standard taildragger, but with a rear wheel on each boom.

I am not even vaguely qualified to comment, turbovirgin that I am.
So I'm just gonna watch lol

Editing to add actual commentary and not get infracted for chan behavior:
  • Holy fucking shit.
  • Like, damn.
  • What the actual fuck.
  • ...if- IF- engine overspeed is the fastest speed we can fly safely, rather than the slowest speed we start taking Wear at- I'd vote for it. It does everything we want and more.
  • I'm not happy about Flight Stress 2. This plane is begging for control rods.
  • But that ship has sailed.
  • It's still the best design so far in actual performance. And in budget.
  • Holy shit.
  • You absolute madman.
  • I love it.
