Select up to 2 action
[x] Work to coordinate more closely, if cautiously, with the 504s

After we seized the farms the Dragonflies are very unlikely to deal with us in a peaceful or trusting manner.

Military
[x] Train Soldiers - Selecting the better candidates from the militia, train them up to your standards, creating a squad (10) of Soldiers (Light Infantry). REPEATABLE (Repeats are individual votes, label as x2 or x3)
[x] Forest expedition - There might be a relic of the old government out there, holding clues as to what caused the starbombs to fall, being politically useful, and also being a piece of lost technology that would be really useful for your labs to get their hands on. Also, it might be a useful training exercise for your troops. WARNING: This option will be forever lost the next time a Firestorm or Great Firestorm disaster affects through the area
[x] Down the line - You've sent expeditions to Shattersaw and have something of a permanent presence there, but you've received little contact from anyone further out. It may be a good idea to send an expedition out there to find out what is going on

We can always use more trained soldiers. If there's something potentially useful in the forest we should try to grab it before it gets burnt beyond usefulness. While we're stretched pretty thin we could use information from further afield.

Economic
Pick 2 options
[x] Expand farms - Fill up the rest of the building you are using with hydroponic equipment, expanding your total food production to be able to feed up to 3000 people (from 2500)
[x] Build militia weapons - Cheap and easy to make, chemical slugthrowers are the mainstay militia weapon, and you could build up to 300 more with your current resources

Make sure we have enough food for our people. Let's make enough weapons to arm our militia, even if they are basic weapons.

Security
Pick up to 2 options
[x] Census - Armin will have teams take a proper accounting of your population and set up a system to keep it updated, reducing the risk of infiltration. Will have future economic benefits
[x] Spy Network - While the skill sets are different from police, spies are a kind of investigator and having a network in place could potentially help avoid subterfuge in the future

Let's take steps to improve our internal security and prevent more spook shenanigans against us.

Research
Primary Project - Local Building Materials LOCKED IN
Secondary Project - Backup Fusion Reactor Design (0/200)

For the research centre, the assignment would be to
[x] Primary Project

Focus the research centre's efforts on our research into Local Building Materials to make sure we finish developing them this turn - the sooner they are available the sooner we can construct more buildings. Also start research on Backup Fusion Reactors so that we can build them before we shut down the full-size reactor to research ho to build it.

Once the spy network gets built, we should use it to find the anonymous soldier who sent us that letter and give him a medal. It's good practice.

No, it's not. It's necessary if the Tree Smelter that we currently have ever breaks down, or if we want to construct additional smelters.

Interesting clarification.

I should decide between Improved Tree Sap Processing and the Plasma Reactor Research. I see you went with the tree sap...

Erm, why do people want the tree smelter, exactly?
Its quick with only a research cost of 100, and it lets us build replacement parts for one of the two complicated components to the sawmill. The other component is "Dandriss Grade Lumbermill Saw Design" which costs 400 research. The backup fusion reactor starts us on a longer term research path.

Yes. The way I see it, if we can harvest not just construction materials but also food from the trees, it will reduce our reliance on hydroponics. Which, in turn, means we'd require less power, machinery, and so on to feed our populace, freeing up those resources for our efforts to maintain our technological base as much as possible.

You are fully recovered (action penalty removed) and better yet, your population is now working smoothly enough that you now are at +1 action a turn.

Frankly, I don't see much we can proactively do that will improve the situation with the 504 or the Dragonflies; letting them screw something up by being evil bastards should give us a proper opportunity to be more proactive down the road.

Air power will potentially be huge down the road, so we should take the opportunity while we can. Actionable intelligence is critical (as well as finding out what assets the Dragonflies and possibly the 504 have outside of Shattersaw), and we have no real reason not to up our count of proper soldiers.

Economic

Food is king. Regardless of what else happens, we will be screwed if we don't have enough of this, and in a position of strength if we have surplus to offer/trade down the road. Also, we should salvage what we can, while we can, as the return from this will only diminish over time.

[X] Investigate the Dragonflies - Try to spy on and examine the Dragonflies, learning more about who they really are and what their goals are beyond 'domination'

Census is just a good thing to have, and while I like the idea of a general spy network, and investigating the 504, either of those could result in unnecessary diplomatic troubles right now. We're already on hostile terms with the Dragonflies though, so we don't really stand to lose anything by trying to scope them out some more.

Given that we've decided not to use the Sap purification thing while it's still dangerous, getting it to the point where it isn't is fairly important, and could be a big diplomatic/PR deal down the road.

While getting people to think of things as 'back to normal' is a good thing, being a single woman gives a lot of potential political options. I favor waiting a turn until we get some returns from our scouts heading down the tracks to check other settlements, to see if there's possibilities there.

This is basically Lord's Fire's list, trading improved sap for more emphasis on building materials. On this death world, being able to build is just as important as food for survival. Let's cue up the construction tech so we can install it ASAP.

Establishing the your directives for the year, you set out to begin the next round of training in preparation for the expeditions you are setting up. Despite calling them 'light' infantry, you actually find your newest trainees more valuable as garrison troops since they can used prepared fortifications where your regulars use their armour.

Occupied/Total
Prisoners: 205/205
Labourers: 1145/1147 (Militia: 398/408)
Artisans: 200/270
Academics: 110/139
Soldiers: 30/60 (Supplies: 100) (Standard infantry 40, Light Infantry 20)

As all your infrastructural projects start coming together, you also start organizing the logistics of your exploration of the communities further down the line from Shattersaw, to try to find out what exactly has happened down there. The nearest location is Glenshade Manor, an administrative suburb of Shattersaw for the upper middle class. When the rail line had been working, it had been an easy hour long commute for anyone who couldn't just submit their work electronically, but now it was a grueling three week long hike. The van did make things significantly easier in that while its power cells didn't have the range to make it much more than a third of the way there and still get back, it did mean that a supply cache could be set up, reducing the amount of food that needed to be carried.

20 Soldiers + 1 SAW
29 academics
70 artisans

Finding yourself with a bit of a labour shortage, you find yourself bringing along mostly specialists. On the one hand, you won't be able to bring much stuff and the academics don't really like having to haul things, but it at least gives the ones without a full job something to do and if you find something interesting they will be there to help figure out what it is.

Rolled 37

Reaching the station, you find no guards posted there, and in fact no signs of habitation. Moving in further, you find what appear to be barricades, no longer manned but shuttered from lack of personnel, a thin layer of dust starting to accumulate and what evidence of people having been here last showing that the left rather than entered. The whole area is quiet and dead.

Proceeding further, you find that the shopping centre around the train station has been radically remodeled, the planters full of Terran trees and bushes meant to liven the place up now turned into what appear to have once been attempts at garden plots and are now overgrown with a riot of useless decorative cultivars that have since died from insufficient watering. It looks like their original flowers became weeds.

Searching the dead settlement, you make a beeline for the community centre, and quickly enough find what is left of the population, which is to say their bodies. The last of them seem to have succumb to violence, their skeletons showing signs of violence, but the vast majority of the bodies are gathered in great communal rooms. Rather grimly, your academics point out that the majority of the thousands of skeletons found show signs of tool marks. They were eating each other.

A grim reminder of how quickly things fall apart without a study supply of food.

Rolled 75 + 18 + 20 = 113
Solid success

Further exploration of the 'cooking area' finds something rather curious that it takes your academics the rest of the day to figure out before they give you an explanation: these people had also been attempting to extract edible food from the trees, but their attempts at purification served to concentrate the heavy metals in the local biology. Worse yet, from the signs of things they probably turned to cannibalism early due to the neurological issues associated with what they were eating making them considerably more violent and prone to poor decisions. They do report that they have gleaned some information on how not to take the sap purification process next.

Rolled 38 + 18 = 56
Improved Local Sap Purification 56/350

You now have to figure out what to do with this place. There's plenty of physical salvage since everything is mostly intact, but more than that it is intact enough to set up comfortable living - although your forces are spread a bit thin to defend it. There is of course the issue of people being rather spooked by what went on here. You're not sure if many would want to settle here.

You of course have plenty of time to make up your mind and you can even change it, although if you leave it alone others from further down the line might come in if you just leave it for now.

Your decision for now is...
[] Allow open settlement
[] Leave it for later salvage operations
[] Seal the area as a grave as best you can

[X] Leave it for later salvage operations

Also we are going to have to go recruiting or try and automate stuff people. We have no free laborers left.
