A Little Vice (Trans Magical Girl fic)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
I'm not posting in the thread because I don't want to risk spoilers, but that review is a positively delightful mix of intuiting things immediately that I was surprised by later, and overthinking things that I found very basic (like how the Weirdness Filter works with identities, although conveniently that one will get spelled out in text soon).

It's also a fascinating look into the mind of someone who hasn't been in a constant cycle of dissociation and denial since hitting puberty :V

Chiro/Avaritia is the ship that gets the most negaverse fanfic about it because it has that 'this is obviously terrible for both of them but it could be less terrible if you just changed a few little things or had a teensy little personality shift for Avaritia' energy.

. . . Thanks for writing this.

I decided to reread it after . . . *things* . . . and I understand it a whole lot more now.

Sigh

I guess I'll continue to keep going, continue to try to break out of my prison of self-inflicted agony. It's honestly kinda funny- just because I know what I'm doing, just because I know that I'm being kinda stupid, doesn't prevent me from still doing it. From being scared. Simply wanting to fester, even though I know that it will never end well, because at least I know this pain.

Honestly, I know it's simple. I know that, in retrospect, it will seem silly. No, I *know* that. But it's still terrifying.

Edit:

But . . . Thanks for letting me drown out my nightmares for a little bit longer. It's nice. I think I needed it.

She classed Noir as Sensei archetype. She'll hate him forever and cheer when he gets beaten by being locked in a fight loop. And slowly realizing he's too bad at fighting to break out of it and will be slowly worn down, so his pride breaks and he loses his powers.

Won't you get spoiled here?

Irrelevant unless someone commissions more. Which I guess somewhat might, but I'm not going to avoid any media that someone might ever potentially order.

The literal Fuhrer in FMA.

what

EDIT: for anyone who followed the link earlier, I only just found out that this book is being (or has been) edited for commercial publication. First of all, congrats @Shadell, I might just buy a copy. Second, as most of my critiques of those chapters were of a technical nature, I've added a note to the end of my review clarifying that I've only read the SV draft.

In Full Metal Alchemist there is a side character named King Bradley, who is the leader (titled Führer) of the country of Amestris. He is first portrayed as one of the good guys, but is actually a member of the bad guys.

Not sure what that means in this context, though.

She reviewed that series. Noticed he seemed to have some rebellious streak and was pretty much forced on this path in life, so she theorized he'd defect later.

I was not good at subtext when I first read that. In retrospect the fact that the head of state of a Germanish state was known as the Fuhrer should have been a big hint.

I had an unfair advantage there by watching Brotherhood. The pilot of Brotherhood establishes him having conducted a "war of extermination" right off the bat, making it clear that no, his title of Fuhrer is not just an unfortunate translation hiccup. I've been informed that the manga buries the lede on that one considerably deeper.

I just always get thrown off by the rank Führer first name King thing. It's as bad as when there's a Prime Minister King in real history.

To be fair to him, he did not get to pick his name and "King Bradley" was chosen for him due to being a "name fit for a ruler".

Honestly, I recommend it. It's quite good! (From what I can tell you haven't read all the way through) But, I'd be hypocritical if I demanded that you should if you don't enjoy the beginning (if something doesn't hook me, then I don't bother)

I'd say that it describes certain trans things really well, especially as it goes on.

I wouldn't say that it's the best (nothing is perfect), but it's definitely good. Plus, it let me drown my nightmares a bit so it has my gratitude.

If you're ever looking for more magical girl stuff, then Nowhere Stars is a 10/10. Unfortunately it's stuck in Amazon Automated System Hell (but the audiobook is accessible)

TBH, the section you critiqued specifically had a few wording changes, but the sentiment was left largely untouched and I suspect you'd mostly have the same read on the passages you pulled out, so I don't think it ends up being unfair.

I enjoyed the review fwiw.

I didn't realize just how true "cis people will believe anything about HRT" when a cis man who was a therapist I went to mentioned Facial hair and vocal changes due to it as parts of HRT and thought mental health effects were secondary, cis people are crazy honestly.
