Chapter 121 - Familial Bonds
"Determination," you begin absently, putting whatever vague knowledge in this subject you have to use. "Strong character. Somebody I can hold a decent conversation with. It's not as though I've ever given it much thought."
Thinking on it, most of your coworkers fit that description fairly well. You're not sure what exactly that says about you. You don't think you have romantic feelings for any of the Sephirah, but as previously mentioned your family has a very poor history of recognizing these things. Your solution to this inadequacy has been to completely divest yourself from the issue up until this point.
Perhaps it's less to do with your feelings and more your selection criteria. The original team who would later become the leadership of Lobotomy Corporation were all selected by your parents for a number of characteristics. For all their faults, they chose well. What else could a person really ask for out of a relationship? It doesn't really say much in the end.
This answer, vague as it continues to be, is apparently satisfactory to your children. Yuma mentions that she would just want somebody who can cook, everyone laughs, and the conversation moves happily on. You don't give the subject another though.
It's really not your thing, after all. You prefer to be the one working to meet others' needs, not the other way around.

As everyone prepares to sleep and you prepare for your nightly patrols, you pull Mami and Kyoko aside. Yuma, ever curious and eager not to be left out, is very obviously listening in through the door to the living room. You leave her to it, casting Sound Of A Star up towards the ceiling and letting its radius enclose the living room, curving noise inwards and outside her hearing. Mami and Kyoko exchange a glance and then look to you for explanation.
"It's just to keep this conversation private. Yuma's always eager to be included, and while that's not a bad trait to have, I'd prefer she stay uninvolved in serious matters." you say. The kids nod, accepting the answer.
"So, what do you want to tell us?" Kyoko asks.
"We'll be making an assault on Kamihama in a few days. The three of us, Sayaka, and Homura. As much as I want to wait, the Abnormality will only become more entrenched the longer we delay. Thus, we'll be making by our attack soon."
"Of course." Mami replies, not a hint of hesitance or caution in response to your command. It's both heartening and worrying how readily she accepts what you ask of her. Most children of her age are eager to strike out in the world on their own, to be independent. Not to mention the fact that you're calling her into what will inevitably be a life-threatening battle. You are glad to have earned such trust, but you're not sure if you deserve it to such an extent. If anyone can deserve that level of trust, really.
Kyoko, on the other hand, shows a more reasonable hesitance. It's buried, yes, hidden behind a more vague and general uncertainty and nervousness that has been pervasive to her demeanor since becoming a Distortion, but it's there. Years of surviving alone, no doubt, reminding her that this course of action carries a grave risk to her. That, and perhaps memories of her previous encounter with an Abnormality other than you.
Whatever the cause, it's clearly not enough to outweigh the need to remain here. You can practically see the nervousness over the danger she might be put in warring with the fear of alienating herself further. Like a tiny flame, flickering back and forth in the wind. In the span of a moment, the burst of anxiety is buried and Kyoko's expression falls to one of acceptance. Even so, she does manage a question.
"Why tell us now? Did you only decide today?"
"I've been considering it for a while, but you are more or less correct." you answer. "Though, that's not to say things are finalized. I do still want to accommodate everyone's schedules, after all. That mostly means clearing things with Sayaka, since Homura doesn't do much outside of business."
"Perhaps she should." Mami muses. While it's a good idea, Homura herself is unlikely to be interested. Unless Madoka were to get involved, in which case she'd tag along just to keep an eye on the other girl. Perhaps it would be a good idea for all the kids to take a day out. They need more of a break from all this. "What about Yuma and Madoka? They will not be present, will they?"
"Of course not," you affirm. "They'll stay in the Library the whole time. Hitomi too, if possible, as well as any nearby family members. I'm not taking any chances with the possibilities of hostages or spite targeting."
"That is good to know. Kyoko and I will be sure to prepare ourselves." Mami says, glancing over to her red-haired sister sitting quietly beside her. "Is there anything else we should know?"
"There is one thing." you say in a low, drawn-out hiss. This will not be pleasant, for you to say or for Kyoko to hear.
"The Adult Who Tells lies, the Abnormality in Kamihama, has started raiding graveyards for parts for her minions." you spit. Mami's demeanor becomes a noticeable degree colder, the gentleness and benevolence in her elegant posture vanishing into an austere conviction. Kyoko is the opposite, barely-constrained anger simmering just beneath the surface. "That's not it, though."
"Kyoko, your family was among the bodies stolen."
The room temperature does not rise. No, instead it becomes colder. As if all the heat in the room was suddenly swallowed up all at once. Mami lets out a stifled gasp as she looks to her sister, visibly shaking with clenched fists. Kyoko takes a deep, heavy breath, then exhales slowly. Flickering tongues of fire scatter from her mouth, curling through the air before fading into mere embers hanging in empty space. Another deep breath, another cloud of ashes.
"Are you alright?" Mami asks softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kyoko remains silent for a few seconds, slowly breathing in and out. You can hear the sound of glass grinding against glass.
"I'm fine." she lies.
Push her to be more open?

Just to clarify, "push" doesn't mean being too forceful in getting Kyoko to open up. If selected, it will be done gently and carefully. The question is if it should be done at all. X has long since graduated from the Ayin School of Social Interaction.
Kyubey's been rather absent recently, hasn't he? What is he up to?
Eh, it's probably nothing.
