This is the longest Chui Dao has remained quiet since the day he pulled himself from his sapphire home. There are certainly times where he has stilled or fallen into the Kukuni equivalent of slumber, but for the most part, my thoughts are full of its nearly nonsensical cries. It still resides within the hammer- something tells me that if he were removed, I would know in no uncertain terms- but its cry is absent and its attention elsewhere.
When I try and focus on that quiet place in the back of my mind where Chui Dao resides, I find only a silence so complete that it nearly brings the rest of my thoughts grinding to a halt. Not a single noise or thought answers my attention. There is only a cloying silence that gets deeper the longer I focus on it.
I believe that Chui Dao is alive. I think that Chui Dao is unharmed. But all I know for certain is that Chui Dao is still- and that is worrying.
"If it is friendship that you want, little spirit, then it is friendship you shall have. Though my trinkets are mere trinkets without your delightful presence, each has the kernel of the friendship that you seek within it. Choose one, and know that you have pleased me."
These went smoothly, although we may need to work out a way to get compliance from Zhuan Kun faster.> [APPROACH] In the past, Kong Zhi wandered freely through the village. Perhaps that was a mistake. We will continue the examination as normal, only Zhi will take a different role.
>> The record-keeper for the examination.
> [SMALL] Tell Daiyu and Kun that they absolutely shouldn't stick out or interrupt the villagers routines, just observe them and look for discrepancies.
> [SMALL] If people don't break their routine to get tested, convince Clerk Ni to pretend everything is fine. For our collective safety.
> [SMALL] Tell Daiyu to use Twilight Horizon
> [SMALL] Read Daiyu and Kun into what is going on so far and what you have figured out. Three heads are better than one after all.
Something definitely seems odd here. Chui Dao appears to be in a forced sleep, or possibly beguiled and focussed on something else.> [SMALL] Check on Chui Dao's wellbeing, memories and any kukuni senses that might be helpful.
Lots of interesting stuff here. While the scene was copied from Zhi's memories, the gameplay was not. And the kukuni plays like a novice that only knows one way to win. Erasing the opponents.> [SMALL] Describe to Zhuan Kun the Garden of Beasts game you played with the not!Zhuan Kun. Draw out the game's map, the terrain, the natural wonders. See if he can provide a read on this opponent you faced.
We were unable to get any of these looked into that loop. Something to try again later.> [SMALL] Keep a look out for any clues about where the disturbance to the local anam is coming from, or any sources of Time anam.
> [SMALL] The group should keep an eye and ear out for anything that might be used to date when this loop started.
> [SMALL] If an opportunity arises, ask what message the headman sent to Twelve Fields. Conversationally.
> [SMALL] Is there anything significant about the incoming storm?
Hmm, so going over this again from the first loop. Both the boy with nervous eyes, Lao, and the ringleader, Liyu, should be safe to assume as real people. Their message is that we must find the truth to slay the heretic, however the truth might also slay them because it cannot distinguish friend from foe."Beware my power!" he bellows to his friends. "I- I must muster the Truth of the Moon! It is the only way to defeat the Heretic-in-Silver!"
The ringleader stiffens as if struck by lightning. "Oh no!" she calls out, horror thick in her voice. "Not the Truth of the Moon! Its light is powerful, but it cannot tell friend from foe!"
"Um, I- we… we must flee!" one of the other 'Tides' calls out, his words tripping over each other in their haste to escape. "The Truth of the Moon will surely slay the Heretic, but it will surely catch us as well if we do not run and hide!"
The ringleader swallows and glances around, looking at each of her friends. "Fare thee well," she says solemnly. "And may we reunite under the light of the sun."
I am finally able to put names to faces, faces that seem more alert and engaged than I've seen in the past.
Could be, but if it happens the same way again wouldn't the kukuni have the advantage?I think switching scripts again might make the Kukuni more aggressive. It allowed the Exanimation to happen, even if it didn't count on us being there. If we want to solve the Kukuni's problem to end the loop that way, then that might make it harder.
Random crazy theory, whatever the fuck is going on turned the Weaver lady into pure time Anam to try to kill Zhi, it just did not expect him to be able to cycle time AnamZhi was hit with cyclable Time anam from somewhere. Unless forcing the villagers to repeat the day is generating Time anam, then it is likely that something in or near the village is the source.
I tend to agree; at this point, we really ought to seek help. I will note that the formatting on this vote is [APPROACH] and [SMALL] instead of a vote by plan, so here's the correct formatting for your vote:[X] [APPROACH] Shoubiao's Wake is dangerous, and the wise thing to do would be to retreat. Zhi will attempt to redirect the examination towards Twelve Fields, where a more learned expert may be contacted.
-[X] Tell Daiyu and Zhuan Kun about the time loop and ask Daiyu to use the Twilight Horizon to confirm.
-[X] Attempt to contact Chui Dao and see if there ok
-[X] Tell the clerk that there is a time loop and that we have lost at least 4 days already and that the danger to the testing artifact is too great to risk.
Honestly I'm tired of the time loop.
Also I've seen a lot of comments on how only the headmen or the little girl is aware of what's happening and I have to wonder if you've been paying attention. Everyone in the village knows about the time loop and is aware. Guys remember how the kids played there game and ignored us, the whole interaction with the impossibly skilled weaver lady and what each of the kids who lined up did. They all have a roll they play out and if they fulfill it they get to redo it again and again and again. We've already deduced that if they act outside of their roll they disappear so there's no point in trying to question them. It's not our job right now to save those villagers and it's more likely that a more experienced specialist would fix this. Also I really want to finish this examination escort quest.
Convince the Kukuni to break the loop itself. Likely by giving the kukuni a better way to achieve what it wants to achieve.
A kukuni this powerful likely has achieved some measure of a physical body. Find that body and destroy it.
I think you are right. It could be a joy kukuni that is harvesting those emotions to become stronger. My best guess, reading what others have posted as well, is that the Kukuni is harvesting some emotional response from the villagers. Some emotion the Kukuni doesn't know how to inspire within this village, but knows that a specific day generated the emotion. So it repeats the day without understanding hoping to illicit more of the emotion without realizing the villagers aren't going to generate that emotion consistently when in a loop.
No, Kukuni grow and ascend just as we do. But theirs is a path of many smaller moments, all similar to those that created them. The more the world around them resembles their inner nature, the more powerful they become. The more powerful they become, the more body they add to their spirit. And the more body they add to their spirit, the more they can alter the world around them."
"To defeat a kukuni," Auntie Bi concludes, leaning forward to capture your gaze once more. "You must know of it. You must know of its origin, you must learn of its moment, and thus grow to understand its nature. Only then will you truly find the path to crush any kukuni."
A jaunty tune fills the air as Clerk Ni lets out an honest, actual whistle, paying no more mind to us or the threat than he would a stick we'd ridden past on the road. I stare at his back with wide eyes. The worry and resolve that have been flowing through me since last night vanishes beneath a wave of pure and utter confusion.
The bureaucrat's joy seems to be contagious- though not to us, of course. My companions are just as bewildered as I am, if not more so, and I find myself very bewildered. It is the world itself around us that echoes the Clerk's joy. The spring sun beaming down through the holes in the clouds is gentle and warming, making the Emberflow Abyss shine as if it carries diamonds along with the rubies that fill every wave. A glistening fish the size of my arm leaps from the surf, devouring an unwary insect before falling once more with a breathtaking spray.
The wind is a calming, refreshing breeze that carries the sweet scent of flowers from the White Daylight Fields. A chorus of birds greet the day, the birdsong barely audible over the gentle crash of the waves. The two sounds create a peaceful harmony so complete that if I did not know better, I would say that it was rehearsed
The only imperfection in this otherwise picturesque day lies far on the horizon. Dark Clouds gather over the Emberflow Abyss, each resembling nothing so much as a hungry beast as they lurk near the edge of the world. But even those ominous shadows in the sky seem to only add to the day, as they bring balance to the world with the subtle scent of a cleansing rain.
As I guide Quishu down the path, I pass villager after villager going about their day, each in their own scene of pastoral bliss the likes of which I thought only existed in idealized stories about simple living.
Terror wars with exhaustion behind her eyes. She looks so weary that it is a wonder she was even able to stand off her stool. But her hands don't shake as she brings the needle to the knotted string and presses it between the threads.
"That is what your game reminds me of," the noble finally states, decisively nodding as if everything is resolved. "It is the game of one untested by true foes, a novice who has only ever found a single way to win. They pursue their victory condition to the exclusion of all others without truly realizing there are other, better ways to claim it."
Dunno, two of the kids were fighting and no one tried to stop them. They stopped by themselves though...Maybe we should try to search the village, maybe the kids houses, see if there's some secret dungeon or cave around, my guess is that it's a kukuni of Peace anam, he dosn't want anything to happen in the village, always calm.
I'm leery of approaching the kid directly, given what our enemy said about making our goals obvious. Maybe assign MD to the task?
I'm not convinced that the loop restarting is actually caused by what we've done so far (each loop appears to be roughly the same length of time by what I've read, not that we've been timing it), but fair enough, talking to the Headsman is more or less as good as talking to Liyu because we want to do both. I'm not convinced that pretending to be couriers is necessary, but I can't see how it would hurt.If we want more time to explore the village and interact with them, then continuing the examination or having Liyu go first is the wrong approach. We know that the timeloop restarted when Liyu was tested, so delaying the testing of Liyu is, I think the correct response for this. We want more time in a loop before it restarts. We've identified two things that trigger the restart, so avoiding those two things should give us more time.
