It Belongs to a Museum

Does anyone know if necromancy can be used to interrogate the old dead or if their souls are no longer available?
It just seems quite interesting to me when, in addition to all the usual tools of a historian who is trying to compile facts, we will have the opportunity to address an eyewitness directly.

Given that even limp-wristed* Amethysts can get up to Morr-or-less sanctioned informational necromancy with Knock of the Departed, I bet real dharrific Necromancy would make it, quite literally, a skill issue.

*Gotta get in the mood early, y'know?

I'm deeply facinated with High Elves and their interactions with the younger races, but it also sounds fun to be in the background of whatever kind of spice happens in Boney's 2520s. and i'm not interested in the Vampirate option.

If I thought it had any chance of winning I'd be voting Tilea and the Southern Realms - it's always been an interesting part of the Old World which functions by (as far as I can tell) cartoon logic, where there are always 11+infinity mercenary companies with their own fun schtick and all of the Machiavellian loony-tunes antics they're engaging with somehow doesn't immediately end with them being overrun by Skavenblight, which is literally right next door.

But sadly, it's like 200 votes behind, so I went with Elftown.

The auto tally only counts the most recent post with votes though, so you need to add everything you want to vote for in a single vote, either by making a new post with all of them or deleting the most recent vote & just editing the new votes into your previous post.

I'm guessing 'divided loyalties already explored these people' is also why there's no Dwarf option, or at least part of it :p

That and there's a fundamental incompatibility. Dwarves would rather fund a revanchist expedition than an archaeological one, they'd rather be using their heirlooms than putting them on display, their cultural splinterings are few and the ones there are are shameful or inaccessible or both. They're deeply suspicious of sharing information and would look at differences between the practices of the past and the ones of today with shame rather than interest. The archives of their most prominent population centers go right back to their arrival in the Old World. There's one big Moby Dick for Dwarf Museum, Karak Zorn, and that's one arc and then you're done. At best it'd end up as Dwarf Trophy Hall Quest and that's just a lot less interesting a concept.

Depends on the circumstances of their death and the relationship they had with their Gods.

It's a bit nervewracking for me, because the close-on-the-heels second place option is my least favorite of all the options

I just don't find the elf stuff that interesting. I think I'd me more into it if it was heavy on the Marienburg Dutch Republic agains the world vibe, but the voting option made it seem much more from the viewpoint of the elves and I don't think of them as very interesting archeologists.

This has convinced me to approval vote Tilea.

So, I can see three real ways to make 'Dwarf Museum Quest' work (though probably not in the way that would make them useful options for this quest or for Boney); the first two about doing non-Dwarven archaeology while tiptoeing around guild/cult/clan secrets and grudgelore, and the third about the diaspora.

Firstly, I could see a literal DL spin off where Belegar makes a different decision with the vaults of 'no way are we going to consider the Skaven, the Tomb Kings, Nagash, the Beastmen, the Orks, the Vampires, etc etc as the rightful heirs of this stuff' - like, 'it would be shameful for us to claim it as our wealth, it would be shameful for us to be bad custodians and get rid of it, it is dangerous and useless to us just sitting there and we do need wealth and prestige... hey, maybe a museum? None of these people had strict secrecy contracts with us... and there are no heirs...' and then having to go do various kinds of non-Dwarven archaeology to back justify that 'yes of course this is a legitimate thing' while also using it to do various soft-power and tourism income type stuff.

Second would be the nightmare mode version of this, where a Dwarven High King founds a museum as a way to try and do 'carved in stone type diplomacy', with the targets varying based on what era it was in, while trying not to start any blood feuds with the Dwarven Kings and Queens along the way. (For a blatant example, a wing dedicated to the life of Sigmar to try and push some particular agenda with the Church of Sigmar etc).

The Third would be Imperial Dwarves trying to build a museum to Dwarf stuff, and would involve a lot of 'trying not to get smashed by the Karaz Ankor or the Cult of Sigmar'.

Vampirates are the ones located the furthest away from anything I would consider of actual historical note, and they seem limited to the dregs of society and a small subsection of the monstrous population for visitors besides.

But something about them excites at least someone's imagination (such as maybe getting to pretend to be gratuitously British in a setting where that niche is usually outcompeted by the elves, to use one post as an example).

We can let the wheel spin a few more weeks before casting judgement on whether we enjoy whatever emerges from the character generation. Quests start with the enjoyers they have and build more if the story goes well; few are widely loved by all from the start.

One of my main objectives is to prevent an ironclad agenda. Altdorf is a nexus of competing spheres of influence, Sith Rionnasc has ten flavours of backers to choose from, Sartosa comes with a very broad remit, Tilea gonna Tilea, and Harkon is a one-man argument, and from playing along with one of those numerous options the institution can gather together the contacts and influence to do whatever it is the players actually want to do. The nature of institutions to self-perpetuate and steer themselves towards their own goals rather than following the trajectory they were founded to follow is something I want to explore here. But none of that really works with a Dwarven King breathing down your neck.

That said, 'Hill Dwarves' would be a backing option for Altdorf, Marienburg has the Foogers, Sartosa wants to build bridges with Barak Varr (Red Brokk of Barak Varr was one fifth of the Grand Alliance, after all), and most of Tilea is at least Dwarf-curious, so there's a lot of opportunities for Dwarven exhibits, just not for it being within the Karaz Ankor.

And if nothing else, being a pirate museum backed by Luthor Harkon means we have access to one of the oldest vampires in all the world. Fun vampire facts from his ancient mind!

That and we may yet gain access to a Rotting Promethean Leviathan as a museum mascot. Always a bonus!

I voted for them because I find the concept of the Vampire Diaspora to be fascinating and would love to see Boney provide some worldbuilding focused on it. They had some interesting tidbits in their main quest when dealing with the Liber Mortis and Sylvania that I would like to see expanded.

The Vampire Diaspora is a vast topic that covers several millennia of history and is spread across the majority of the Old World. I don't believe our protagonist would have any difficulty finding of subjects of historical note to investigate.
