If our husband is Laenor we'd still need a man as a side piece or else have a childless marriage. "Keeping it lesbian" with Laenor as a husband just means we'd need to have a polycule made up of the man who is married to us, the man who is the biological father of our children and our lady love. The obvious solution being to keep it lesbian outside the marriage.
Lots of gay royals in history grudgingly conceded to having sex with their consorts to get an heir (the Andalusian queen who cross-dressed so the Caliph would have sex with her comes to mind). I'll admit that this plan rests on us being able to convince Laenor to consent to that in exchange for mutually looking the other way for our extramarital relationships. edit: Rhaenyra ideally with Alicent to eliminate the possibility of secretly bastard children that happened in Canon. If our husband is Laenor we'd still need a man as a side piece or else have a childless marriage.
I think there's a chance Laenor might actually be infertile as well as uninterested. Doesn't the show have Rhaenyra and Laenor talk about they'll first do their duty before satisfying themselves with paramours of their choosing only for them to still not have any children together?Yeah, but how butch does Knight!Rhaenyra need to be for Laenor to decide that he could hit it from behind?
What if we wear the top half of a suit of armor?
This is true, but canon shows that Laenor isn't one of them, or at least not to an extent sufficient to produce children, hence the whole Strong bastards scandal.Lots of gay royals in history grudgingly conceded to having sex with their consorts to get an heir
Fence-sitting because the alternative is to dive headfirst into an unhappy marriage or plunge our father into an unhappy marriage to birth a future usurper.
Decisively making terrible choices isn't smart, it's just quick.
Two things:Even if you think Laenor is this great match, what's the point of matching Viserys and Laena?
Basically no advantage to marrying into the Velaryons twice. If we're going to marry Laenor it feels like crazy favoritism for our dad to also marry Laena as the gap between houses is already bridged.…
Unless us having bastards from a man other then Laenor will be taken as an insult to house Velaryon and casting us down a chance for a second child of Laena to inherit Driftmark. We already see this happen in play to some extent in canon with Vaemond.2) If Viserys marries someone from another Great House and has a son with her, then that house will be on the son's side without doubt. Whereas, as I have said, a Laenor/Laena double match will ensure Driftmark's loyalties are, at worst, divided. It is actually hedging a risk!
Also, we cannot trust on some fantasies of a Dornish match. Viserys will remarry, and if it isn't Laena then there is a very high risk it will be Alicent, which would be very much worse for us.
My opinion on the idea of marrying Laenor is that while he's a great political match, he's awful as far as our finding love ambition goes. It seems weird to pick the option that involves idolising loving marriages and them marry a man that doesn't have even the slightest bit of interest in us.
Viserys will remarry. We cannot prevent that.We could instead tell people to PUMP THE FUCKING BREAKS. Pushing for marriage, regardless of who it is, will ultimately weaken our own claim. Force the realm to grapple with a female heir for a while, allow Viserys to mourn, and then marry when everyone has had more time to consider the politics.
Our potential girlfriend marrying our father very much IS worse for us.I honestly think a match with Laena will be even worse for us then a match with Alicent. At least with the latter our step mother doesn't come mounted on Vhagar.
That is exactly an advantage of it. Repeat after me:
We will not find love in a political marriage
We will find love. But our marriage will be a completely separate affair to it. Thus, him being gay and not even interested in us, and possibly helping to cover for us, is a great bonus for our aim.
Our potential girlfriend marrying our father very much IS worse for us.
