Arc 13 Post 46: Of Dead Nodes
Of Dead Nodes

14th of February 2007 A.D.

"Kemmler's little helper is back..." Not the words you had been expecting to hear waiting in the bus stop right across from a Wendy's and especially not almost in your own voice inside your own head. "Check this out..." An experience that is not seen nor heard felt nor smelled nor tasted unfolds in your mind like an algorithmic flower. You are seeing the world from Iris' point of view, you realize, the Internet to be precise and it is definitely not the Information Super-Highway of cheesy 90s shows it is the constant stream of data packets sent and confirmed, waves of meaning crashing upon the razor sharp shore of nul-space that is a firewall infused with malicious purpose.

There's a flicker of amusement at the brutal intrusiveness of the construct. SUTRA powerful enough to build defenses this layered and strong wouldn't make them this obvious. But as the protections unspoiled Iris realized her target had already fled, that is had never been in the system at all, just projecting from a bio-organic support... not bio... that did not make sense! An Error message you discover feels like a ten minute migraine compressed into a fraction of a second.

"Ow! You could have warned me!" you snap rubbing your temples.

"Oh, sorry," Sophia looks a little embarrassed. "Figured you wouldn't notice, your pain tolerance is a lot better than mine."

"Turns out Anti-Bob was using a Black Court Fledgling as a relay to get into government servers and play ghost in the machine. He's been playing with Gard for some time and we're not sure why, other than him being a petty asshole. The best guess we have is that he's been stalking a bunch of people on Uncle Sam's dime, testing their protections and Gard was just the first one to get the right kind of help."

"What, what happened to the vampire?"
Somehow you manage not to shout that one aloud.

"Oh he wasn't a danger to anyone, starved of blood and mortared into the wall of an office in DC, like a very creepy antenna. Anti-Bob jumped in there through a wire some so-and-so had run through the vampire's skull which is both clever and gross. As soon as he was in there a third party picked him out long distance. And let me tell you Nevernever 'Physics' or not..."

"Not an easy lift,"
you conclude grimly. "Did you call this in to the library?"

"Yeah, that's who found the corpse, Von Trier was not amused, even though I did keep everything that could be traced back to Harry out of it the fact that the bad guys got into a building with sensitive servers, took down a wall and left a 'present' was bad enough. Black Court elders and hacking is apparently worse. Told them to keep a piece of Antenna Vamp for divination purposes, the body was fresh enough that they can do that.."

"When did all this happen?"

"Got off the phone with her ten minutes ago, then you called me and it felt like serendipity,"
she answers with a smile, your smile.

"You know..." you sigh. "It's a lot more fun when we surprise other people."

Dad and Harry had just shown up, the latter looking curious, the latter worried at whatever expression the two of you are wearing.

"So just to be clear we are not about to have Undead Y2K Two: This Time It's Happening?"

"Not as far as I can tell, though I... suspect a bunch of people were a lot less paranoid about this kind of slow probing than Gard is. Whatever this operation's doing besides spying it's been doing for months."

With that stomach-clenching thought you say 'Hi' to Lydia as well.

"The hikers..."

"Fine thralls probably, we haven't tracked them yet."

One good thing about the timing of this, whoever's behind this plot sounds like they belong in supernatural Super-Max.

Before stepping into the Nevernever what do you want to do about the Black Court hacking plot?

[] Warn Lara Raith, she has government contacts, tech savvy and a reason to make getting to the bottom of this a priority

OOC: Good news, you found Evil Bob. Bad News: Evil Bob found the internet and made friends.

Evil Bob is a French air spirit turned nazi collaborator who specializes in necromancy. His internet work is neat, but we're the queen of cyber hell and bitch slapped the teeth out of the only real competition we should have.

I'm all for making this an internet game; let's go to the FCF and ask which Sutra want to explore the wilds of a primitive extradimensional data sphere. If Bob wants to step his peasant ass back into their native realm they should eat him alive.

Edit:

Seriously, we should be making the computer systems in our areas of operation unfair fortresses. Our Sutra have had centuries of development time that no one in this dimension should be able to claim. Challenging them on their home turf should be hilariously, absurdly, file-a-complaint-with-god unfair.

Work around them by other means? Sure. But anything else should be knights in shining armor versus a modern aircraft carrier battle group.

Edit: error

Random Dude: The Internet is a blight on humanity and where decency goes to die. It can't possibly get any worse!

Evil Bob: Hold my beer...

COMMENTARY
So there's a Black Court scourge running around DC. There has to be; IIRC it takes a Master Blampire to make a fledgeling.
Thats something that needs to be addressed with a quickness; Blampires are like a cross between bamboo and kudzu.
You dont want them putting down roots.

The house mouse tells the field mouse there's food in the pantry. Those servers werent chosen at random.
I wonder which 3-letter agency is the silent partner of this particular operation; US govt overflights require a paper trail. It was the CIA and infernalism in the 1960s; who is it this time?

Anti-Bob rises higher on the list of things that has to be addressed.
Learning to use the Internet is new; possessing undead OTOH is something he was able to do back during the Red Room Case when he was running around with Kattrin.

There IS a Garou Gift for reformatting spirits and changing their nature called Malleable Spirit (Rank 5); unfortunately, none of Molly's clones currently have it. Still, Im sure her people can help her kludge up something.
IF we can capture Anti-Bob.

The submarine he possessed in the Field Museum is probably still an applicable focus for him.

Von Trier and the Library know about Sanctuary. So its reasonable for Molly to ask them for a divination focus; they'll assume that she has people for some of this. And its also in the general interest of the White Court to not let Blampires get any influence in North America, especially if Molly is doing the dirty work for them.

The White Court engineered the original fall of the Black Court, even if a lot of other supernatural factions(and some mortal ones) enthusiastically helped to put the boot in once they did.
I cant see a situation where they are pleased at someone apparently trying to re-engineer a return to influence on their behalf.

Undead, the most unethical form of processing power... until Crypto mining rigs show up :V

Now hear me out... undead crypto mining rigs.

Called it, third party working through gov assets. We can decide what more to do after the current mission.

Taking over satellites would be very provocative after this - the government will be on high alert. We are better off launching our own. Thankfully, this shouldn't be that hard. Molly can act as a launch vessel on her own.

Do we want Lara on this? She isn't a friend to mortals and would use this to gain more access for herself. It also exposes the exact nature of our contacts with them to her. She can probably guess, but confirmation has its own value. Politically it throws our connection to them in the Library's face, so it's not ideal.

Too late for this situation, but it occurs to me that we can make anyone using satellite imagery against someone we like really regret it.

Fascination splendors have an interaction vector, not necessarily a proximity one. Looking at the item can be enough in many cases. I also don't see much about size limits beyond the region based ones. So I think we could technically make something that would punish people who look at it with hostile intent to the owner in various ways and set it out to swat orbital spy nonsense.
