Try to survive the Winter: A planquest in Fantasy Colonial America

[X] Ghostnoses [Dog] : These dogs don't bark, they howl, and they howl a lot in Union. It seems they can…smell the ghosts present in the town, and have learned to fear the specters of Winter. The dogs can smell the supernatural.

Step 1: Get the dogs to differentiate between ghosts
Step 2: Have the dogs be trained to follow the directions of a ghost
Step 3: Attach some of the ghost's possessions to the dog with a collar
Step 4: Get new ghost & dog team!
They would make a great scouting team and give the Freed a way to travel around. Basically a service animal for the mortally impaired.

Again this was from a nat100, stop looking for trap options. The spooky name is just part and parcel of being the spooky faction.
There's a difference between "this is a trap" and "this is awesome, but in a way that limits how it can be used."

For example, Sara is awesome, but we've had hints that she's technically undead and just refused to stop living by sheer force of will. She's great, but she miiight just spontaneously combust on 'proper' holy ground or something for all we know. Which doesn't make her a trap option.

The dogs, likewise, might technically be undead, explaining their insane strength and stamina, and not really a problem for us, but potentially limiting their resale value.

Since nobody brought it up cause of the dog discussion we just got a new main heroic figure in our roster from wickerman. And since we've also finished the path of the first walker I'm willing to bet alongside warrior son getting his experience points we'll get the first walker as second New heroic figure. And what would there bonus would be?

The Burned One was described as the patron of fire, hearts, and martyrdom.

For starters, the Burned One probably amplifies the effects of our fire-related actions like the scarecrows and Wicker Man (so a level of defense against the supernatural, maybe greater availability of ashes, etc.)

Hearts combining with the Scarecrows helping deal with nightmares might also be another method of improving Union's internal cohesion, or at least reducing the effect of normally morale-decreasing actions.

Martyrdom sounds like it'd be a buff to things like combat. Maybe reduced morale loss from casualties (combining with "hearts"), or unique/random but positive results when we take losses in ways that can be seen as self-sacrifice.

True but what pantheon is he from European or native is he just amalgamation of both and what would the first walkers buffs have since we are gonna contact him.

True, but thing is, that would be the same of all the dog options. There is no doubt that there is going to be something off about all these dogs. I do not see Half-dead causing us more problems than the others.

He's from the Winter Walkers I believe. Given his location in the first mention of him had the top half of "which Saint/Hero do you call upon for this specifically" was Christian figures and the bottom half was Winter Walker legends, and he was in the bottom half, below the First Dreamer and above the Maize-Mother.
-[] [Figure] Mary, mother of Jesus

-[] [Figure] Saint Francis, patron of animals, herders and preserved nature

-[] [Figure] Saint Michael, the Dragonslayer, patron of monster hunters

-[] [Figure] Saint Lazarus, the Resurrected, patron of the ills and cursed

-[] [Figure] First Walker, founder of the Awake, patron of warriors and protectors

-[] [Figure] First Dreamer, founder of their order, patron of the hopeful and wises

-[] [Figure] Burned one, who sacrificed himself, patron of fires, hearts and martyrdom

-[] [Figure] Maze-mother, who tamed the Three-Sisters, patron of family, farming and cooking

-[] [Figure] Write-In, add a christian Saint or a figure of Algonquin Myth and Legend (the Winter Walker are far more into ancestors worship than any existing Algonquin culture).

Our supernatural fighting abilities and défenses have grown considerably, but we're still vulnerable to infiltration. I also love the « evil-detecting dog » trope, so having guard dogs to sound the alarm pleases me.

That would be odd as we got them from a colonist specific action/task for something done in Europe (I think?).:???:
A major point across the Quest has been how the practices of the Colonists and those of the Winter Walkers synergize in unexpected ways. And the increased union between the peoples of Union I think is being displayed here in a Winter Walker Legend gaining strength from a Colonist action.

EDIT:
-[] Set up Deadport [Fishing] [Freed] [0/150] : There are some amongst the fishermen who think of setting up a small port on our old settlement, to facilitate sea expeditions. Now that the dead have made this place home, some amongst them fear to even go near the Fallen Town.
But Old Seadog insists on doing it, saying he hears on the sea winds old mariner's shanties…
Dead mariners on dead winds, bringing shipwreck to port, away from the depth, this we can promise…

Set up a port, unlocking new sea actions, can bring and repair ships (even if they are not seaworthies)

-[] Make the Galleon Seaworthy [Fishing] [0/75] NEW

What is left of the galleon is not seaworthy. First, we should send some of our mariners to ensure the galleon could painfully, sluggishly travel near the coast to a harbor or one of the coves our scouts have found for repairs.
Can bring the Galleon to a potential docks
Say, a thought I just had. Do you think that description on Set up Deadport means that if we complete Deadport, the Dead Mariners will be able to take the Galleon to Deadport (and so inside the protection of the Freed) on their own?

Though, that is something of a risk, given that it's a /150 Progress action that we'd have to try and finish in one turn. Maybe best to just plop a die or two on making the Galleon seaworthy ourselves, and work on Deadport next year.

Wow, I just binged this quest and I love the vibe.

[X] Halfdead [Dog] : The dogs are small, compared to the shepherd dogs of Europe, with long noses. However, they are strangely strong and enduring, able to run for an entire day and throw on his back a full grown man. The dogs are stronger and more endurant than dogs of their size should be able to be.

having dogs able to endure the hardship during winter and other dangers is a very strong base to build off of.
With enough effort, I can see us working our way to first tame them, followed by an extensive selective breeding process increasing their size just enough to be ridden, or aiming for the trait that allows them to smell the supernatural followed by the ability to harm them.

Yeah I agree I mean otl we did create so many different breeds of dogs who's not to say we can do it again but with more magic. And maybe there's wild dogs out there waiting to be found.

Edit: also we could get help from the shepards to speed up the process cause that's kinda they're thing.

Also @OldShadow what do cats represent to the winter walkers and how do they treat and did they ever see cat like animals near the vinland area cause vikings and cats go together like bread and butter.

Mmm, alright, I've been convinced to go for Halfdead. Bolstering the things the dogs are already good at should give some promising results.

With the knowledge of dog breeding and the tenacity of the human mind to create even better bois we shall create all not the choosen dog breeds with the base of the buff half-life dog. Also what everyone opinion getting Maine coon cats bred sooner or finding in former viking settlements cause If I know anything killing off a cat population is like killing a fluffy cockroach.

The cats are new animals the Winter Walkers never seen before.
They like them, since they are good against vermines, but worry of how well they will do during Winter.
Good good let our little fluffy death machines grow big and many. But seriously cats are one of the most successful invasive species and are one of best in taking out native species otl.

Also did Sara adopt cat or kitten cause I think this image Sara fits more than my previous attempt.

And yes this is Arya from asoiaf and she and Sara kinda are similar.
Yes, Sara look like this, thanks.
She will adopt one of the first kitten when they are born.

This is Captain Jones the Sea dog. When he becomes a hero character and gets better and leads his crew the risen dead to sail the waves again.

Couldn't find a before becoming a hero photo and I know it's not one to one but its davos the onion lord so I couldn't say no to a fellow sailor.

That's cats for you. Managing to survive by worming their way into your heart so they can get free food.

Cats, at least the common house cat, don't really do well with extreme cold. Their fur is apparently just not built for it. Luckily they always try to leech off of the best source of heat they can find. So come winter you'll probably find the cats huddling under the clothes of their favorite human.

Hmm.
en.m.wikipedia.org

Babalú-Ayé - Wikipedia

Babalú-Ayé could be particularly interesting to invoke. Associated with both infectious disease and healing, and even Smallpox in particular.

Could be really useful if we successfully invoke him for this coming Winter. And metaphysically, he's associated with heat (because fevers), which might have an odd synergy with our recent burnings, and general fighting against Cold.

Though, the question is if Orishas are valid beings to invoke as part of the cult.
