Vote Closed: Winning vote: 1000 Dimensional Travel
Well, that was a thing. As I said, I didn't expect such a debate about Dimensional Travel. I'm not sure but we may have beat the record of voters at once. 18 for DT, 15 for SI, and 1 for MB.
The first thing is that I want to soothe some people's worry. Alex won't go gallivanting all over the multiverse right the instant he gains the ability to do so.
I have a number of plans starting with the next chapter, and I have no intention of disrupting them with that. Furthermore, I want to have access to Creature Acquisition before going anywhere. There's no point in going to Pokemon or One Piece if I can't bring back some new creatures. It would make it easier anyway.
So I want your opinions on how we should handle it in the quest.
As written Dimensional Travel works like this:
-Dimensional Travel: Once per month, you can teleport into the original dimension of one of your creatures. You appear close to a member of the same species as the chosen creature. You can also teleport back to your original dimension with the same once-per-month limit. |
And just to be sure that we're on the same page here's an example:
On July 1st, 2011 Alex traveled from the Worm setting (Earth Bet) to the Pokemon Setting (Unova). He arrived there it's also July 1st in that dimension (for simplicity's sake).
He cannot use Dimensional Travel again before August 1st, either to return to Earth Bet or to go to another Dimension.
He decided to return to Earth Bet on the 5th of August and he arrived there on the same date.
If he wishes to travel once again, he must wait at least until the 5th of September.
So that's the situation, and I do not wish to change the rules of the Celestial Menagerie but considering how I've been writing the quest I fear that this would be impractical.
I have a number of ideas, some or all of them could even be combined, and you can propose your own. But this is not a vote I just want to exchange with you. And by the time Alex has the opportunity to travel through the multiverse the situation in the quest may have changed drastically making all this moot.
Option 1: One day in Worm equals One month in any other dimension BUT Alex's power still functions on the Worm timer. So Summoning 3/day becomes Summoning 3/month, and so on.
This would sharply limit his options and prevent him from coming back with a month of Material Extraction backlog.
Option 2: Alex cannot take anyone with him when traveling to another Dimension, not even by stuffing them in the Orb's dimension. This would prevent all forms of evacuation of Earth Bet.
But in exchange, Alex can travel freely between the two Dimensions, and no others, during this one month.
This would allow him to remain active as a Protectorate Hero and just visit the other Dimension for a few hours each day.
Option 3: Alex is automatically recalled to Worm after one month in another dimension and cannot go back to that dimension before he visits another one. So this means a minimum of three months before he can go back.
This would make each visit even more meaningful with a clear time limit at the risk of things happening in Worm that he cannot participate in.
Option 4: Nothing, we keep the normal rules. Like option 3 it means pushing back Dimensional travel until Alex gets a break in his duty, maybe even all the way back to after Scion.
Neither this one nor Option 3 are my favorites, I would like to use DT not as just as an epilogue or season 2 but I could understand that reasoning.
Option 5: Something else?
No matter the options that I ultimately choose, I promise that no visit to another Dimension will last more than five or six chapters. He won't go there to fix all the problems or even any problem in that Dimension, he's not an SI. That does not mean he won't help if encounters a problem but for Alex traveling Dimension will be mostly about gathering more strength and maybe searching for a solution to Scion if at that point he becomes aware of it.
