Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

The latter, the sun needs to rise in Chicago for her to have Faith. Also a reminder that everyone bar Molly still has gills at the moment.

I thought she was using Flesh 3, not Flesh 5.
Ah well, whatever works.

Didnt realize you were representing it as gills. Just thought that Lore of Flesh 5 was supposed to be as bullshit as Lore of Beast 5, which is its benchmark counterpart for animals. Either way, Molly doesnt have to spend WP to make it permanent for (Lash's Faith)days, which means it will remain active all through this mission.

Everything Lash does has to be biologically feasible, even though that biology does not have to be Earth-like.

Lore of Flesh 5 said:
• • • • • SHAPE FLESH
The demon is capable of transforming human flesh into any shape desired. Mortals or fallen can become monstrous creatures straight out of legend.

System: Spend one Faith point and roll Dexterity + Medicine in a resisted roll against the target's Willpower (difficulty 7). The player decides the form she wishes to create, along with its relevant physical capabilities, and the Storyteller determines the number of successes necessary to make the form a reality.

These successes can be generated as part of an extended roll over a period of days (one roll per day) as the demon "tinkers" with her creation. As a rule of thumb, assume that each success confers or removes one Physical Attribute point or physical feature. The effects of this evocation last for a number of days equal to the character's Faith score, or they can be made permanent by expending one temporary Willpower point. Devourers can use this evocation on themselves or others, as long as they can touch a subject.

Torment: Monstrous demons' alterations are invariably warped by their Torment, creating grotesque deformities that transform victims into walking nightmares.
Such a hideous metamorphosis causes the victim to gain a temporary derangement and to suffer a level of lethal damage each day as a result of the intolerable strain placed on his body. Mortals who witness these creatures suffer the effects of Revelation.
Compare to Lore of Beasts 5, which is the same thing for animals:
Lore of Beasts 5 said:
• • • • • CREATE CHIMERA
The Devourer is capable of manipulating an animal's physical body, enhancing its capabilities or mutating it into a hideous, fantastic creature that combines characteristics of numerous different animals.

System: Spend one Faith point and roll Intelligence + Animal Ken. Each success allows the Devourer to add one point to a specific trait, or to alter a specific feature of the animal's physical form. The laws of physics and the conservation of mass do not apply, so if the Devourer wants to make a winged tiger, she can. Too much change too fast can put a tremendous strain on the animal's psyche, though. Total up the number of trait points and alterations that have been added to the animal and make a Willpower roll for your character. If you get more successes than the total number of modifications applied, the animal comes through the process unharmed. If the roll fails, the animal becomes dangerously unstable. The Storyteller determines the specifics of the animal's altered behavior, and in the interests of creating tension can make the Willpower roll on your behalf, keeping the result secret until the animal's true nature manifests. The effects of this evocation last for a number of days equal to your character's Faith score, or can be made permanent with the expenditure of one Willpower point.

Torment: Monstrous demons invariably infuse their creations with the taint of their own Torment, creating pain-maddened, murderous beasts. No Willpower roll is necessary to determine the mental state of these creatures. They are invariably deranged, rabid beasts that exist only to kill and maim the living.

Hmm... the Lore of Beasts System has some interesting implications. I did not read that one since Tiffany does not have any of that lore, but it would seem to indicate she can go further than I thought. Still given that she is rolling medicine I'd say biology provides if not rules than at least guidelines.

Doesn't seem to be a big difference between the current write ins. I like the way this is frazed better though.

On the balefire elementals; it might actually be worth playing with them outside of the nuke use case at some point.

It's pretty speculative, but Molly's nuclear hatefire isn't the same as the pure Yami Wan stuff she was using previously and it's a pretty key part of her themes at the moment.

Primordials aren't just big spirits; they're sapient laws of physics. Not in the singular either, but as an internally consistent and complete definition for how an entirely independent universe could work top to bottom.

Molly is at best a larva of a larva in this regard, but she's still technically on the path.

I wouldn't be surprised if balefire or something like it was her first new concept. Inspired by existing reality sure, but taken from mixing things like what happened with Lanka to something as fundamental and distinct as gravity. Similar looking, but distinct in same way Malfeas' green sunlight doesn't behave anything like the light we're familiar with.

If I'm somewhere close to correct that could be exploitable.
"You look unaligned and lacking certain mundane resources to match the scale of the magical power you radiate," she shrugs, getting a nod from the until then silent Mutt.
That and she's probably trying to get us in a good enough mood to relax on the technicalities of our deal. We agreed on dead vamp for information on Sandra, and being able to hunt down two vamps we hadn't heard of before and seemingly do whatever we wanted with them in the domains of two different maybe-gods says something about the anticipated difficulty of the task.

If I was her I'd be sweating the consequences of coming up dry. A number of supernaturals seem perfectly reasonable and polite right up until you short them. She doesn't really know Molly that well right now, so it'd be hard to tell what she's like.
Ambitious Whampire is ambitious after all, and avoiding temptation is probably wise. But it seems to be fair game to be clear about Sandra being an Outsider cultist that wants to burn the city down, since we did tell Little Tommy.
Might also be good to mention in vague terms that she's a wanted woman by some big fish in such a way to make it ambiguous how many exactly are involved.

Even if the Outsiders aren't a dealbreaker you'd have to be stupid to work with someone who's being hunted by fish big enough to hire Molly after they've been found out.

Hearing something to the effect of "I'm the nicest face she's going to see for a while, followed by Maeve" implies things that should shrivel any ego.

At the upper ends of the supernatural, getting to off-set a supernatural favor with cash is cheap as fuck. Better than owing a favor that can be called in. Especially since she's had time to talk to Mayeda, and has a better understanding of exactly what retrieving him involved, and what that implies about Molly's general weight class.
The funniest thing about all this is Harry, who is just now realizing that his near-poverty lifestyle is really mostly because of his own preconceptions and that, should he have put his mind to it, he could have been far more rich already, to the point where money don't matter.

I love the stunt, it's very evocative. I'm honestly voting just for it.

It is funny, but this isn't the first Harry has heard of this. He's being grumbly because his cases usually really screw him over in one way or another but he lives the way he does on purpose even if he doesn't frame it that way.

On a scale of 1-10 Harry's complexes register as "Military-Industrial". :V

Oh yeah, Harry knows he can make more money, but at the same time in his whole carrier no one just handed him a bunch of money with a smile, it was always a bribe to compromise his morals somehow. Of course part of what he is missing is that he is not as uniquely terrifying as Molly, certainly not as much as Molly Tiffany, Lydia and himself together.

Yeah, if I could pay off the supernatural force concentration equivalent of a godslaying squad, I too would cough up the cash real quick.

You might send off the aspiring hero with a bag of copper coins, but if he comes back with the demon lord's head and the most jacked companions in the realm, you bet your ass you're showering him with gold and land and princesses, if only to avoid him just taking it by force.

So what you're saying is that he's become numb to the horror.

I think we're losing our touch guys. Going to need to get him to help us break physics or something later to instill the proper state of confusion again.

Thats actually a very good point.

Molly does go around radiating Big Archdevil Energy. If you are someone knowledgeable who just met her less than 24 hours ago, made a deal with her and arent sure if you can deliver, the fact that she is well-spoken is not necessarily reassuring ; Nicodemus Archleone, for example, is infamously well-mannered even when prepping to cut your throat and drain your lifesblood into a bowl.

I wonder if Arlene would have even let us into the Gardens if it wasnt for Lydia and Dresden being in our warparty.

We havent mentioned that to anyone outside our circle.
I dunno if Winter, or Maeve, would want that mentioned publicly before getting their hands on Sandra. Its not reputation enhancing for an Outsider cultist to still be on the run.

The funniest thing about all this is Harry, who is just now realizing that his near-poverty lifestyle is really mostly because of his own preconceptions and that, should he have put his mind to it, he could have been far more rich already, to the point where money don't matter.
Nah. Harry isnt a rube, he knows he could be making a lot more money if he wanted to.

In his very first book Marcone tried to hire him as a purely magical consultant for a lot of money, Lara and Mab have both made their own plays, and an oracular spirit literally made it her payment to ask him why he chooses to live in a hole in the ground with no power or heating.

I mean, since Summer Knight, Lily has essentially subsidized his housekeeping expenses, because as part of her gratitude she has assigned brownies as his housekeepers, and they have done everything from his laundry, sweeping and cleaning to restocking his cereal and pantry without his saying anything, or providing money.

He just has enough of a messiah-complex, and is something of a spendthrift when he actually comes into monetary windfalls, being more willing to spend it on magic shit than investing.

I mean, River Shoulders literally paid him in solid gold for a while when his scion son had issues..
And when he became a regional Warden commander and started drawing another paycheck in addition to the PI thing, he threw most of that money into crafting Little Chicago, not into financial investments.

Like @BronzeTongue says, Harry's complexes are military-industrial, and affect his priorities.
That doesnt change until he has other people dependent on him paying their bills.

It's not even just the arch devil energy, though that doesn't help.

Even the nice ones can have a hot button about this sort of thing, and many entities are psychologically different enough from humanity that they have issues fully understanding our motivations but experienced enough to mask it.

The net result being they seem safe until you trip a flag you didn't know was there and they very much aren't. That's why sticking to the etiquette is important.

That's fair, I was thinking about that after suggesting it. My initial thought was that everyone who matters already knows what's up because Winter had been communicating with the Dragon and has been active in the area around the city.

Maeve seemed to think just driving Sandra out of the city in any direction would be enough to take her despite how slippery she's been so it seems reasonable that they've got something significant in the works.

On the other hand, the city being surrounded by winter death squads would probably have gotten a mention by now if it was that obvious.

Harry runs his life like a quest protagonist or TRPG character all money goes to magic items or other equipment. Cost of living is kept as low as it possibly can be without it inflicting stat penalties.

Arc 11 Post 67: Pieces Rolling Downhill
Pieces Rolling Downhill

13th of January 2007 A.D.

"Takeover?" you infuse the word with all the skepticism of a teenager. "No. She's a party planner, and more into....immolation. Prefers rains of blood to reigning, if you know what I mean." You shift a little, moving some of the ice in the bleach solution around you before you lean back into the sides of the tub, the phone in the crook of your shoulder."You're aware of the.....uninvited guest that the old duke smuggled into the Chicago soiree last November? She's a big fan. Huge."

The line goes dead, not even breathing for a full minute, then, voice a touch shaky but still filled with smarmy charm: "Look, I don't know who sent you, something tells me I don't want to know, but if you want my advice get out of Vegas while you still can. There's either going to be a wizard's war, or the bloody fairies invading or God knows what else."

At the mention of God you raise an eyebrow unseen, he's the first incubus you have ever heard to invoke the Lord's name and he does not seem to be doing it in vain.

"Maybe my friends and I are the cavalry, ever think about that?" A bit of the previous lightness slips back into your tone. "There are rules and the powers that do don't want to break them if they are still standing. You know why?"

"Yeah," the word stretches out over two syllables, he's got a system down. A pity for him at the moment you have even better ears. Big Corey knows less about the high level wheeling and dealing of the Dragon than he wants to let on, though likely more than the latter fellow might prefer. "Cards on the table, I'm going to take a little vacation to Hawaii tomorrow and lets just say I'll be taking some of my best and brightest with me, employee motivation. So if you need hands on the pulse and guns on target you aren't going to find them at Full House, but I'm willing to share some of what I heard."

"Do tell," you encourage, your impression of his competence spiking higher, not only does he know its time to run he has the good sense to follow the impulse instead of going down with the gleamed up ship.

"When the Reds took the tunnels they didn't get off scoot free, rumor has it a lot of them got tangled up in Orpheus' dreams and nightmares. He was a sorcerer who'd wrapped the place in glamors and illusions, used to be his turf. They broke the cardinal rule of killing a sorcerer, took him head on so they got his death curse right in the kisser. Now this is just me speculating but if you really wanted to ruin someone but didn't quite have the power to make them gouge out their own eyes what better way to do so than to make them scared of their own shadows. By bet is the Count got the worst of it, so he's keeping most of his people under his eye and also prepping for Domesday."

"Or he's dead," you point out.

"He's not dead." If nothing else Big Corey seems to believe that.

"How do you know?" you press. "Maybe they are having a Mexican Stand Off down in those tunnels."

"I like you doll, but I'm not about to share all my sources with you over a bathtub call."

Of course he could hear the water, you sigh inwardly.

"Nice city you have here, no really it looks pretty, but I would rather not be here, not under these circumstances. I want to deal with bloody Sandra and go home. I have no interest in gossiping or playing power games. I just want to know where the fire is so I can put it out. If the Count is dead that means one thing, if he is incapacitated that means another."

There is another moment of silence, though shorter and you can still hear his breathing for this one. "Charon, you know who that is?"

"Yes," you keep your answer short, no need to tell him where you had found the vampire.

"He knows when people die, he's been asked five times since this whole mess started if the Count is dead, five times that I know of and the answer was no every time. My bet is mind fuckery. Is your girl Sandra good with mind fuckery?"

"Apparently," you sigh.

"Well there you go, maybe she has a hand in it. You got a description?"

"I can do you one better, I'll send you a picture."

Alas he does not recognize her and neither do any of the people with him, though you do get a promise to keep asking around his people to see if anyone knows anything about Sandra. That leaves one more question: "Why are you leaving? Signs in the wind?"

He laughs mockingly though wthether aimed at himself or another it's hard to tell. "Maybe, though not seen my me. The shit-flinging Wyldfae have skipped town. That's never happened, not as long as I've been around nor any of my assoaciates. Anything's frightful enough to get through their addled skulls is reason enough to start walking and you've just confirmed the wisdom of following."

Darn, Wanderland's not here... there goes that string to pull. "Alright, good luck." He's been helpful enough that you mean that just the tiniest bit.

Regained 2 Essence -Now at 6/15

"Good hunting," he answers.

As you end the call you glance at the time: 02:12. Harrowmont probably isn't up, so the question is is it worth waking him up in the middle of the night to interogate him or should you wait for morning when he'll probably be more inclined and capable of giving clear answers?

Even if we can't rely on any material support from Big Corey, we at least got some solid information out of him.

Would now be a good time to call in more outside help? Of course, we have our Hell to call upon, but we could also send the Archive a heads up as easily as scribbling a note to her. There's got to be some True Venators in the area she could direct to provide assistance, given the nature of the threat here.

Yeah, sometimes you gotta make a stand and defend what's yours, but when multiple individuals at Molly's level start congregating and looking like they're about to throw down, you get out of town and hopefully the state, minimum.

I'll still put good odds that our killsquad is enough to take on whatever monster's waiting in the wings, but it makes sense for the ants to scram even when it's a dragon fighting a tiger; you might know who's gonna win, but no matter what if you stay you're gonna lose.
