Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Okay, right now the question is not whether to unleash 700 Exaltations on an unsuspecting world.

Only two are in our power to affect.

Personally, I think two more Exaltations in the world, as allies, enemies or simply independent actors, wouldn't be a bad thing for the quest and might go another step towards altering the pretty bad status quo the world currently has.

And I definitely don't believe that unleashing two Exaltations is enough to put humanity under the Golden Boot forever, like some people seem to fear.

Still, in the short term I'd prefer to stop Sandra from enacting the end of the southern half of the USA via desertification, and I think most questers will agree with that, so we can delay the question what to do with Ra-Bot and his god-battery-prisoner for now.

Edit: Well, that was certainly bad timing.

....
You know what?
I've been asked to drop it for the meantime, so I will.
Agreed. This has been rather unproductive and frustrating.
Silk is the sorceress who owns and runs Club Xanadu, which is a place of power in the city, and the local safe meeting spot for a lot of unaligned magic users and other supernaturals. Not neutral, but safe.
She's the one who is on speaking terms with at least one Rampire. We saw her in our vision, and Arlene mentioned her.

We want to know whats happening with the Red Court and specifically the Dragon, she's a good place to start.
If whatever Sandra is doing requires more magic users like Kattrin's ritual did, asking around her club for regulars who are either dead or missing is also a great place to start.
Thank you.
At the time Molly showed up, at least one senior Whampire had been publicly staked and another(Mayeda) was missing, presumed dead.
And thats just what we know of on the Whampire side.

After something like that, you dont risk valuable operatives blind.
You send mooks with a phone to eyeball the area and get their hands on test sample..

Besides.
A forty minute response time is much better than the several day response time it took the White Council to decide to further look into the Hellgate that opened in Chicago.
Exactly. The city should have been on high alert with two high profile murders and a suspected black court roaming around. The response time was still almost an hour, and with subpar forces. And, besides, it's beneficial to us if they notice us leaving, and investigate - that's the whole point of the diversion hotel room booking.
Conventional explosives against a non-conventional opponent strikes me as utterly useless, for much the same reason that most weapons cant harm spirits. A nuke maybe, but not a conventional bomb.
Dont bring a knife to a gunfight.
So far, as far as we have seen, in most cases, there are no "keyword" defenses. Damage is damage. And, besides, Davy Crocket is a nuke, and we have spiritual nuke equivalents. Should I specify bringing one of those?
I do not like to stifle discussion, particularly if it is something that makes sense for Molly to worry about like letting Exaltations loose in the world, but it might be worth you guys considering the practicalities of the matter. Right now the only way you have to set the Solar-Abyssal pair into the world is to let vast swaths of the continent become a desert and probably the destruction of Las Vegas. Allowing that is not really IC so step one for all plans no matter what you want to do with the Exaltation is to stop Sandra and secure the idol.
Sorry about the way the discussion turned out and went. And yeah, you are right, the way it works right now, there's no way Molly would think about releasing the solar exaltation - it's a failure state. The best case scenario is that next month we get to spend time preparing to release it in a controlled fashion.

In the absence of the Dragon, there is no "the city". Just a set of different factions, often working at cross purposes.
The city's supernatural suzerain was either dead or crippled, there was an agent of a Black Court Antediluvian running around, and thats not counting Sandra and her bullshit.

40 minutes was a spectacular response time, starting out of the blue.
Detection time, scramble time for the minions, then travel time across Las Vegas in city traffic.
It would be spectacular response time for the Jade Dogs too.

Yes there are.

See the climactic battle scene of Grave Peril, where Dresden called up the vengeful ghosts of Red Court victims at Bianca's mansion, and no purely physical damage from any of the Rampires there could touch them. The only person who did damage to them was Bianca, and she was throwing magic to do so.

Damage is only damage when you are an embodied physical being.
If you're not, if you're a spirit, tough luck for anyone trying to shoot you or blow you up or do anything that isnt evoking particular banes of immaterial beings.

And no, you dont want to bring a bomb with balefire elementals into a major metropolitan area.
Thats like, if possible, even worse.

If the alternative is losing a chunk of a continent? Hell yes I want to bring balefire elemental bombs into major metropolitan areas. As I said previously - Godzilla threshold.

We have more than enough time to forestall this.
Even if the Outsider thing was released, we still have the option of shanking/trying to shank it before it can wreck this place.
Or literally calling Winter and Summer and even the White Council and asking for help.

I do not see it as necessary to plan to kill hundreds or thousands of civilians as part of some hard man contingency.

I would stage a rifle company of Brass Court cyborgs into Las Vegas before I'd deploy mundane WMDs in a civilian city, let alone magical ones that involve exposing Brass Court spirits to possibly corruptive Outside influences.
And I dont want to stage a rifle company here.

Having a nuke on standby as a very last resort would be good if we are about to loose since Las Vegas would be lost in that senerio anyways. The problem would be recognizing that fact and not setting off a nuke prematurely because we didn't realize we still had options.

Arc 11 Post 66: Words on Water
Words on Water

13th of January 2007 A.D.

Thankfully Mr Adkin does not have any objection to getting in a disguise which is very fortunate as Tiffany does not even try to disguise his age, instead using a plain black dress, headscarf, blank glasses and strategic use of makeup to make him appear as an elderly woman.

"Not very flattering is it," he chuckles under his breath as he takes a few turns at getting the walk right. "Huh, Eliza was right, you never do forget." There is a wistful look in the gaze behind thick glass.

Swinging by the Hanging Gardens you pick up Mutt and inform Arlene that you dealt with her vampire problem, but there are still worse things afoot in the city. "If you could keep an ear out for trouble that would be..." You are interrupted by a plain green bag light for its size... and filled in turn with green. "Thanks, but that's not necessary."

"In this business Ms. Carpenter you do not meet many people whose interests are wholly aligned, while also demonstrating both competence and speed. I had thought Kenneth was dead, you recovered him inside three hours. The fact that you are running a clandestine operation also makes cash uniquely valuable, no? Transactions could be traced."

A point well made, so you smile, thank her again and head back to the car as Harry grumbles: "That's never happened to me."

Gain ● Resources -> Now at Resources ●●●●

"Wear less grey," Tiffany teases before explaining. "Your loyalties are too obvious Harry. Trying to buy a Warden of the White Council with mere money is akin to flushing dollars down the drain."

"So I look cheap for the asking do I?" you ask, eyebrow raised in askance.

"You look unaligned and lacking certain mundane resources to match the scale of the magical power you radiate," she shrugs, getting a nod from the until then silent Mutt.

"Where to?" Harry asks from the driver's seat.

"It is night, following the pillar of light is traditional," Tiffany's lips twitch into a smile as you throw her an annoyed look. She's not wrong, the Luxor does cast a pillar of light into the skies over Vegas from the tip mirrored apex, thirty-nine powerful xenon lights, the most powerful man-made light in the world, at least when it is running at full power. Tonight is just another Saturday night as far as the casino staff is concerned, blind to the danger that stalks the city, the whole continent.

"A bold choice," Mutt points out from the back.

"We're not trying to hide remember," you motion to your costumes self, hat strings to leather boots. "We don't exactly looks dressed for budget-conscious accommodations."

"I looks like..."

"There, that scowl, keep that up," Tiffany interrupts him. "Aim that at random people in the lobby and no one will doubt you are a bodyguard."

So it seems to go, even at this hour the lobby is filled with people coming and going, either out or into the casino part of the establishment, pockets jangling, smiles ranging from manic to fake-as-cardboard-Elvis. No one bats an eye at your group, though asking for a trio of suites and paying in cash does earn you a second look-over. Mr Adkin being here is probably a good part of the reason why you are not questioned more. Mobsters generally do not bring grandma along if they are planning anything too shady... like say hacking into the casino's systems with a piercing look.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 4/15 (HMP)

***

Finally, finally you get to sink into a bath. For the next hour or so you soak, breathing in the power of the tainted water, but Alas you have other things to deal, people to talk to, warnings to give. Pouring all that Essence back into insight you make the call to: "Hello, Full House Studios, I have a proposition to make to Mr Skavis, his ears only I'm afraid."

Regained 4 Essence -> Now at 8/15
Healed 1 Wound -> Now at 7/15
Lost 4 Essence -> Now at 4/15 (ATB, Occult, Etiquette and Empathy Excellencies)

"Who is this? How did you get this number?" A woman's voice comes from the other side of the call, a touch annoyed, but not surprized. According to Mutt 'Big Correy' is much in demand with the young would be singers dancers and other entertainers of Vegas and that is the way he likes it. That's his hunting ground.

"A friend who plays snooker with Mr Skavis shared it with me." Truth be told you are not sure what the noble art of snooker had done to be Skavis code for 'another vampire of the family'. Technically you are lying, none of the families will claim Mutt, it's how he got the moniker, but this is also the fastest way to get to the boss, he actually cares about those who share his nature, his demon at least as much as he cares about anyone.

After a moment's hesitation the call goes on hold then another voice, smooth as butterscotch and just a little rough around the edges, picks up. There's music in the background, some kind of techno beat that coincidentally emphasises every word. "Ah, good evening my dear how can I help you?"

"I'm afraid you have that the wrong way around Mr. Skavis, I have already helped you, in the course of helping myself of course."

"Of course," of course he laughs.

And with that you are in, feeling a little like one of those sea lions that slip from the shore right into a graceful dive in the ocean you spar back and fourth with the incubus about the precise nature of your 'generous donation' to his cause, a heart yes, but a cold one, a dead one, a particular vampire no longer to trouble him, weaving in mentions of Arlene and the Hanging Gardens, of the temple where he met his end.

"Alright darling, let's say I believe you. No, no I shan't be coy, I do believe you, you put a corpse back in the ground where it can no longer get in the way of business, but as you say you did it for your own reasons, taking out the trash, that sort have no place in the modern world. Unless you are angling for a contract in a similar line of work..."

"I wasn't here looking for him, indeed compared to who my companions and I are hunting the vampire was nothing, a distraction. There are more things under the ground here than corpses that do not know to stay dead."

"A word of warning 'cause I like you, this is Vegas. The lightshow isn't just for the rubes, there's more and subtler fare for those who know the real shape of the world. If you go looking you'll find three pieces of the True Cross, two coppies of the Book of Soyga and the Harp of Dagda neatly stacked right under the strip. Clever people around here know there's more to gamble on than mere money and they spread rumors like a pigeon spreads bird shit. It's worth about as much. Maybe someone sent you here chasing mirages, hopping you'll get lost."

"The RPGs I got shot with tonight sure seemed solid," you drop the lighthearted tone all at once. "I know the woman I'm after is in Vegas and I know that if she gets her way there won't be a Vegas once he's done."

"A takeover?" You can feel him tensing up. "Someone's been stirring up the muck and rabble to hide their own meddling but... Why don't you tell me about this target of yours. I'll see if I can help, in the course of helping myself of course."

What do you say?

COMMENTARY
Smart woman, Arlene.

At the upper ends of the supernatural, getting to off-set a supernatural favor with cash is cheap as fuck. Better than owing a favor that can be called in. Especially since she's had time to talk to Mayeda, and has a better understanding of exactly what retrieving him involved, and what that implies about Molly's general weight class.

Random encounter roll, huh.

Gonna note that the Harp of Dagda was a signature tool of a major Irish god, and the Book of Soyga was supposed to be an occult treatise and spellbook of the English astronomist, mathematician and occultist John Dee. I actually enjoy those little references.

+1HL, and we're now 7/15 Health. *checks stat page*
Molly needs to heal at least +5HLs to reach 12/15, in order to lose her remaining wound penalties
Thats gonna take a while.

We're rolling 20 dice at DC4 vs Big Corey, which would have been Charisma 3 + Etiquette 5 + Excellency 8 + Without Honor 2(ice in bathtub) + Stunt 3 - Wound Penalty 1. Given that Demonic Primacy and Boiling Sea Mastery both proc for a combined -3DC, that means normal rolls against him would have been DC7. And he has Willpower 7. Not bad.

It does speak for his intestinal fortitude that he can perceive Molly's Demonic Primacy over the phone and keep his composure.
I wonder if he'd be able to control his sphincter if we told him that Maeve of the Winter Court sent us here.
:V

Sorry about my part in the exalt debate.

I think it was a relevant discussion because this seems like a policy setting moment for how this will go in the future, but dominating the conversation in an annoying way to the point people started skipping the discussion between story posts was unnecessarily extreme and impolite.

Dropping it till it's relevant again.

None of us want to deal with that shit.
Worth noting that outside of the immediate pressure we've kinda signed our name on this incident. Even if we're willing to ignore concerns of our actions, which we really shouldn't, that on camera anima flare means anyone in the know enough to hear about Molly is going to immediately suspect our involvement at a minimum without any further evidence.

To name one issue, the Library should have that information and their job is to tell congress things of note. If we do anything that earns a congressional hearing they're going to face an organizational obligation to say something. The feds can't openly cite that information, but they can use it.

-[X] STUNT: "Takeover?" you chuckle, and there's no humor in the sound, only the weariness of the one who knows the stakes - "were it only so benign a goal. This, I think, works well enough.

RATIONALE
I dont trust Big Corey enough to tell him about the Sin-Eater, or what its relationship is with the Dragon.
Ambitious Whampire is ambitious after all, and avoiding temptation is probably wise. But it seems to be fair game to be clear about Sandra being an Outsider cultist that wants to burn the city down, since we did tell Little Tommy.

And Lara has made a bloodily emphatic point about the current White Court leadership's tolerance for Outsider bullshit, or indeed the kind of high-profile moves that risk drawing the Court into major conflicts.
Something that the new Skavis leadership presumably agree with.
