Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

@BronzeTongue what about Lydia's actions? I suggest just copying Uju's into it. And if the words are of no use can you take them away? I just want to kill him and move on to the next one, plus I'm a firm believer in the saying "the villain died from talking too much".

Good point on Lydia. I'm going to just copy it into my plan, but if anyone takes issue with that ping me and I'll revote it as a separate v2 plan.

As to the dialog, I added it for flavor and we usually get some leeway with that because exalts work on rule of cool to an extent. I also sort of envision it as something we said while in the process of getting up in his face since the rest of the plan specifies going straight to murder. So I think it'll be fine.

I think Molly would care IC.
Her thinking him a bad person is not the same thing as her judging him as must die by her hand. And I've always read her as being careful about getting cavalier about casualties. Bad habit to cultivate when you wield that much power.

Besides, unintended consequences are very much a thing when you get careless or impulsive; we just got a reminder of that with Charles and Eleanor and his daughter Connie that we didnt know existed IC.
Never mind the platoon of ghouls that Charlie Boy canonically pays for in Oklahoma that we dont know about IC.
For older Vampires I'm generally willing to err on the side of murder, even if some might have unforseen consequences.
The White Court did not survive the fall of Rome and the two millenia to date by being solely social manipulators.
They may have a preference for social work, and not have the sheer martial edge of other vampires, but they have enough to be terrifying if they actually ever cut loose and damn the casualties.

None of them we've seen are the equal of Constantine Raith, who could allegedly pull Ebenezar McCoy's ranged life-ripping trick
But thats not the same thing as being helpless.
We are right now, barely come out of the starting-phase, ready to take on a dozen Whamps with a mix of backrounds, including at least one elder, the Lady Skavis.

I am very confident that their martial prowess will mean little to us in a year or so.

For older Vampires I'm generally willing to err on the side of murder, even if some might have unforseen consequences.
Personally I'm of a measure twice cut once mind here. I wouldn't risk our life or mission success for it, but elders hold significantly outsized influence in their communities.

Most of the time we'll probably end up offing an elder doing stuff we don't like, but it could be a significant issue if we accidentally off one that isn't particularly objectionable or could be induced to clean up their act.

I'd say it doesn't matter much now, though in fairness the whamps are kind of screwed by their specialty.

They really shouldn't be able to take the more esoteric vampire powers, in canon they're limited to things closely related to their mental and emotional specialties unless they're also a magical talent.

Not that they can't be dangerous, but all their best tricks fall flat against IPM. A similar tier of red or black vamps would be a lot more dangerous to us.

It's like trying to play as a high level mind/illusion specialist in DND. Everyone hates mental fuckery so much that they let individual effects that trump whole schools pop up and become a core part of play as soon as you're powerful enough to cast them.

They get away with it because DF doesn't have canon mental defenses equivalent to mindblank, it's a real fight every time.

I'd call that magical talent channeled in unusual powers.

As in, the Whampires who can do more than physical enhancement and mindfuck all had the potential to be real Sorcerers or even Wizards, and by becoming Whampires that potential turned into the potential for exotic disciplines and bloodmagic.

And the since the Whamps with these powers are more likely to rise high and live long than the regular ones, we see proportionally more of these powers among Elders.

Given harrys willpower isn't exactly normal. Honestly think dp might be lowballing what his willpower stat should be.

The thing is those are incredibly rare, in run of the DF Thomas is the only one with even a flicker of potential. The court was starved for such talents; that's why Constantine searched for someone like Harry's mother in the first place.

Getting weird stuff in their mental domains or making deals for power or service from entities with desirable abilities is one thing, but the full suite of elders shouldn't all be able to violate the basic rules of their type.

Also worth noting that they lost a lot of lore when their millennia old elders fell with Rome. Lore on how those guys twisted their powers or practiced Pari flavored magic would probably have significant strategic value precisely because of this issue.

Well in WOD a vampire learning an out of clan discipline is possible but super hard. And basically requires a trainer. Only elders have the contacts, and spare XP to do it really, over the much easier to raise clan powers.

Talent isn't that rare.
Wizard-tier talent is.

Thomas has enough talent to use even a normal spell, without it being twisted by his hunger into something else.
If we take the previous assumption, that would mean he has a lot of potential for going into esoteric Disciplines, he's just too young and lacking in teachers to have actually done so.

Not sure how it's modeled here, but for canon DF it basically comes down to special target fledglings.

Turning a talent or a wizard for red and black court vamps translates to the getting equivalent potential in weird magic beyond their base abilities.

For whamps this basically means luck of the draw at birth, except magically talented whamp children are even rarer than human ones per capita.

This doesn't stop them from making deals or getting clever, but an even powerful vamp might eventually break into increasingly flexible mind magic without ever gaining any ground in thaumaturgy or evokation.

Any talent beyond the scope of their hunger is rarer than a comparable human population. That's part of why they fear human magic so much.

It's not just a weapon for the Kine, it's a weapon they can't easily match. With a thousand years to work with even a tiny talent would stand head and shoulders above almost
any member of the senior council. They have to respect them anyway because as powerful as they can get they're almost always locked out of broad swathes of crazy powerful abilities.

Having that flexibility is why Wizards matter as a faction at all.

Which I have to admit, can be incredibly annoying when you want to go for illusions or any mind magic, when your design includes everyone and their mother being flat out immune to something, maybe it's time to go back to the drawing board and rethink some things, even if you have to cut said magic school entirely, it's not like it would make an actual difference in gameplay, except nobody would try in the first place and run smack dab in a wall....

Arc 8 Post 29: A Breath Drawn
A Breath Drawn

13th of November 2006 A.D.

As the white king continues with his speech, you began to draw on your newly deepened well of power. The essence running the your body, mind, and soul almost felt like waking up; as the world opened up before your eyes and her mind warded itself in the primacy of your soul for a moment your couldn't think of a time you'd felt more alive. Watching the crowd, and Madrigal in particular, with your awakening senses you sees as much as hears the climax of the speech. First the shock, then the fear and anger, followed by resolve.

Ordinarily, for as much as an arcane sense can be called ordinary when you peer past the skin, though flesh and bone into spirit you see the surging colors of emotions and intent, haze or halo. Bending all your mind and will upon the White King you see something different, colors poured into shapes and instinct into meaning. His pallor deepens to to a waxy hue that more befits a corpse, his fine black locks a tangle fit for tats and worms. His clothes are different as well, invoking the air of nobility that might perhaps have been familiar to Alexandre Dumas, nor better yet Cervantes, a corpse-Quixote turned parody of power. But this is no mad honorable knight, cruelty thwarted in every line of his fave, in every gesture.

Lost 4 Essence -> Now at 11/15
Lost 1 Willpower Now at 7/9

A puppet is he but one bound not by mere strings, but chains of steel and gold about his wrists, his throat, bindings of power and desire leading to the seat to his left. There sat Lara straight and attentive of her 'sovereign's' words. Don't think about what it means, don't think about what it means... sadly that is rather like not thinking about a pink elephant only grosser.

"It was likely an reversal of existing dynamics. Their power is their hunger and it is shown in feasting." Usum offers, in what he seems to think it some kind of improvement to the situation

Skin-crawling revulsion has a way of distracting one in a way of distracting one no matter how sharp your senses had grown, but it is imposibile to miss the shifting of the crowd, silk and denim, cotton and leather, all whisper like leaves in some dark forest when the wind suddenly shifts from the north.

"There are dangers all around us, not all obvious, many not so, traps and snares waiting for the unwary or the greedy, baited with rancid meat. Mistake me not I have seen it once before and it was the ruin of empire, turning blades on whichever back as nearest, each seeking to climb upon a mound of corpses and drowning in an ocean of blood. Let us not be coy I speak of course of the leech-things of this new world, the so called Red Court. Often have they begged of us to follow in their war against the White Council. Lady Malvora..." he chooses seemingly at random from among the watchers with a causal wave of his hand. "What spoils the promised us. Our needs are complementary Duke Ortega claimed, we had but to remove this one final obstacle and our dominion would be one to last ten thousand years. Some called us indecisive, timid... even weak." Chained monster or not it is pretty impressive how he drops his voice as he speaks with heavy, deliberate intent and just a pinch of malice. "I know the treachery of a mad beast when I see one, even when it pretends to be tame. Behold how they sought to ensnare us."

The doors of the hall slam open striking the walls before the advance of a pair of ghouls flanking a youngish vampire whose pallor likely owed more to fear than to his nature. "Mr Black inform the court what you discovered of the financial dealings of the conspiracy with the leech-things"

Lara has not been sitting on her ass the last three days, you admit grudgingly impressed. She had taken the list of names you send her and discovered an entire network of Red Court sympathizers within the White Court many of them linked to enormous payments in cash land and mortal pawns.

"And for what were all these payments given? Why to attack an ally of the court, new-found, rare in perception and puissance..." With this flattery he motions to you. "But it was far, far more than that." With an instinct for the dramatic fit for the stage he plucks a list from the lands of his... computer person maybe... and tosses it at the feet of Lord Skavis and his heir. "A list of all the magic users your plot already killed behind the mask of religious fanatics..."

"Uncle please..." Madrigal starts. "What is this, would you really side against your own flesh and blood, against your own people to keep a hateful peace with those you know despise us?"

That is when you recognize him... that is when you recognize one of your favorite directors. What the fuck? Does everything you used to love have to turn to shit and memories of monsters? Was he in on the whole thing at splattercon? Lara found links to the Red Court, but do they go deeper?

The Sight Discounted by 2 XP -> Cost 13/15 XP
Regained 2 Essence -> now at 13/15

His manner does not match his words, his feet are shifting ready for a lunge.

What do you do?

[] Start empowering yourself now (you obtain the pre-battle buffs on turn 0 as planned; but you might seem like you are eager to fight due to the obvious transformation and dent some of the justification Lara is looking for)

[] Wait for him to actually make the lunge before you start to glow

[] Use Mind Hand Manipulation to stop him mid-air you do not like how quickly he made the choice, he seems more steeled than despairing

OOC: Yes that was Molly's native sight starting to stir since you rolled nonsense for that Chakra vision on a very important target, To be clear it is not just having 15 successes, it is having 15 successes where it matters.
