The results for attempting diplomacy seem pretty stacked in the negative direction...

Negotiate maintains the small lead its had all vote.

[X] He attempts to resolve things peacefully. (20% chance of major penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations, 20% chance of minor penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations, 20% chance of major penalty to Mechanicus relations & minor bonus to Eldar relations, 20% chance of minor bonus to Mechanicus relations & major penalty to Eldar relations, 20% of minor bonus to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations)

Counter point. if this fails than we will have to invade them eventually to secure a Forge world for our own use anyway.

Maybe if we get both sides to hate us enough they will forget about how much they hate each other :V

In all seriousness though based on the overwhelming support for either the Exodites or getting a peaceful resolution we should look at the likelihood of the top vote actually achieving that.

We have a couple of different outcomes with the current winning vote
  • 20% chance of pissing both off to a comparable degree as if we supported one over the other (-- AdMech relations, -- Exodite relations)
  • 20% chance to leave both parties mildly unhappy with us (- Admech relations. - Exodite relations)
  • 20% chance to get an outcome equivalent to what would happen if we supported the AdMech (+ Admech relations, -- Exodite relations)
  • 20% chance to just get the same result as if we opted to support the Exodites (-- AdMech relations, + Exodite relations)
  • 20% chance to make both factions mildly happy (+ AdMech relations, + Exodite relations)
The "attempts to resolve things peacefully" option leaves us with a 60% chance of a negative outcome for the Exodites since 3/5 of the equally possible outcomes involve a penalty to Exodite relations which given no one in thread appears to want to support the AdMech seems counterproductive (Admech have 0 votes in their favor while Exodites votes are close to beating the "resolve peacefully" votes).

Based on this and the fact that Drake and the Federation in general disapprove of the local AdMech's desire to colonize their Exodite neighbors I think we should just support the Exodites.
Soptamorn intends to conquer the world and either purge or enslave the native Eldar so they can import their own colonists. Beyond its general unacceptability for the atrocities being committed, you as both an individual and the wider Federation have been making decent strides in establishing a positive relationship with the remnants of the Eldar Empire. Standing by and letting the Mechanicus conquer Filnedan and crush the local Eldar would be very counter-productive to those efforts.

[X] He sides with the Eldar. (Major penalty to Mechanicus relations, minor bonus to Eldar relations)

That seems like a somewhat skewed perspective. There is a saying regarding compromise in that in a good compromise nobody is really happy but they get what (or something they) want. The proper way to see the "20% chance to leave both parties mildly unhappy with us (- Admech relations. - Exodite relations)" is that both sides have compromised and while they are not happy about it it is acceptable. It is a peaceful outcome and I would consider that better than major loss in relations for ether. Plus we will want to see about getting that Mechanicus mini-empire to join us. I am not saying we do that at the cost of our relations with the Eldar, but I am saying we can come out of this with a win but only if we try for a peaceful resolution.

//Edit: sorry I accidentally had the wrong quote up before.

And that is the only thing about the the local AdMech that they really dislike. I see no reason to blow up that relationship just because be were unwilling to try to negotiate a peaceful resolution.

The exact results of what happens with the specific negotiate results are unknown right now, minor relations with both could still result from war breaking out, Drake is diplomatic enough to deflect blame onto the invaders. We were told try it and find out for a reason.

I'm afraid that this is a try it and find out situation.

Also even if we stop the war NOW doesn't mean the mechanicus won't try and build up their navy to take another shot of exterminating the exodite eldar again this time with a sizable fleet to intimidate us with.

They've already decided that the lives of non-humans don't matter and it's unlikely we'll be able to convince them otherwise over the course of a single diplomatic meeting. Hence, any agreement we make with them (unless we give them certain assurances) will more than likely be a stalling measure.

The AdMech's core position in this situation involves launching an invasion and enslaving/genociding the Exodites while the Exodite aeldari's position is them not wanting to be invaded and genocided/enslaved. Those positions aren't exactly equal in terms of what they demand from the other party (die or be enslaved vs please don't invade us to enslave or kill us).

A compromise that doesn't involve genociding/enslaving the Exodites but results in a lowering of relations between us and the Exodites would probably still involve the AdMech taking some land since otherwise the outcome wouldn't be different from what we would be doing if we outright supported the Exodites.

While invading someone with the goal of just taking some of their land isn't as horrible as invading someone with the intent to enslave or wipe them out it's still pretty horrible and Drake outright called the AdMech's plans an atrocity in the quote I took from the update in my previous post.

And that is the only thing about the the local AdMech that they really dislike. I see no reason to blow up that relationship just because be were unwilling to try to negotiate a peaceful resolution.
That's like saying your neighbor is a nice guy if you ignore their extreme xenophobia and desire to lynch their other neighbor who you happen to also want to befriend.

The Aeldar aren't perfect but we have gotten way more from cooperating with them and I don't considering making friends with the local AdMech enclave as being worth damaging our relationship with them. Aside from them being the reason we have an extra Primarch with us they also bailed us out when we were fighting the Dominion.

While pissing off the AdMech as a whole as a result of this could end up being a big problem since they are a peer to the Imperium we are in a uniquely good position to weather that as we have our own independent industrial infrastructure and academic institutions unlike the rest of the Imperium and we can also bribe them with the STCs that we have.

Fundamentally I do not considering the low possibility of both parties leaving the negotiating table satisfied worth the much higher chance that things blow up in our face.

We could convince them to use one of the numerous other uninhabited worlds around this subsector/sector.
They already have those.

They want this one so they can murder Eldar, it's literally in the post.
Soptamorn isn't just invading the Exodite World to genocide Eldar and claiming such is reductive. Soptamorn wants to conquer Filnedan for its location, resources and inbuilt habitability because in this age of limited warp travel and next to nothing terraforming, those matter a lot. Sure, they intend to genocide the Eldar, but they are doing that because the Eldar in the way. Which doesn't excuse the genocide in the slightest, but it isn't evil for the lulz, it is evil for pragmatic and practical reasons.

Nowhere in the post is stated the genocide is the goal rather than the byproduct. Not only that, but the Eldar have far from clean hands or intentions on the genocide. Eldrad Ulthran might be have been a cool dude so far, but the majority of Eldar would happy commit genocide against non-Eldar to save a single Eldar life. Even Eldrad is fully okay with committing genocide if he believes it will fulfil his goals, it is just that he doesn't believe it will help regarding his plans for Drake and in fact will be counter-productive to them.

Building a fleet that intimidates the Federal Navy is beyond Soptamorn's abilities. You have multiple Glorianas and are both capable and willing to build more. Frankly, the Imperium is the only human faction with the capability to build a navy that intimidates the Federal Navy.

Furthermore, this whole affair will be dealt with now, one way or another.

At the moment all we know is that the AdMech want is to conquer the planet, purge or enslave the Exodite Eldar, and bring in their own colonests. To quote
Soptamorn intends to conquer the world and either purge or enslave the native Eldar so they can import their own colonists.
This strongly suggests that what the AdMech wants is the planet not nessisarily to kill the Eldar. The Exodites are simply deemed in the way and in typical AdMech 40k fashion if you have a xenos population in the way get rid of them. We have a chance to deal with this in a way that doesn't end with us having an additional enemy.

That's like saying your neighbor is a nice guy if you ignore their extreme xenophobia and desire to lynch their other neighbor who you happen to also want to befriend.

So you say we fight them instead of try and be peacemaker and change them to be less

And Ninja'd Thanks @Oshha

Just to be clear, neither side is innocent here. Yes, the genocide is wrong and evil, but the Eldar have no objections to it except to being on the receiving end. The only party involved here who considers genocide to be morally wrong and bad on its own merits rather when it is just being done to them is the Federation of Bladus.

Keep in mind that Mon'Keigh isn't just an oh so charming slur the Eldar like to toss at humans, it's the name of the species we most remind them of, that they genocided back in the 'good old days'.

Good thing we have Terraforming tech.
Unfortunately the negotiate option doesn't indicate that us offering to terraform a planet is a sure shot way of getting them to back off.

Given the RNG nature of the negotiate option it's entirely possible there could be a number of issues that prevent that proposal from being acceptable to the local AdMech ranging from the Federation not having the resources at the time to terraform a planet in an acceptable amount of time for them or that terraforming another planet would take longer than just conquering the Exodite world so the AdMech decide to stick with the faster option.

I am not opposed to the negotiate option but I consider the decently high risk of it blowing up in our face enough of a drawback that I favor just siding with the Aeldari here.

And the Imperium is busy murdering it's way through who knows how many alien species that aren't outright hostile at the moment. While going by canon xenos protectorates do exist the same could be said for the Aeldari who left humanity and many of the other alien species that used to be humanities' allies alone for the most part.

Like Oshha said, the only faction here that actually gives a damn about genocide when it isn't happening to them is the Federation.

Might as well try for peace. could level our diplo If we succeed.
