Mechanicus is a powerful faction. We shouldn't compromise our morals, but if we can shoot for an off-chance of successful resolution without pissing them off, I think let's do it.
There's a good 40% chance of massively pissing them off ala

"What the actual fuck you don't want us to murder the hell out of the space elves?"

The negotiation option isn't actually better unless you're feeling really lucky.

[X] He sides with the Eldar. (Major penalty to Mechanicus relations, minor bonus to Eldar relations)

Eldar exodites living in maiden worlds usually mind their own business.
Mechanicus wants to genocide them, and replace them with their abominations.

No reason to compromise when one side is clearly in the wrong.

The Mechanicus is not just another human polity. Not anymore

If we gain more eldar protectorates we might be able to start becoming a known safe haeven for the eldar and possibly attract a craftworld. The eldar have a lot more to offer us than these cogboys and going in hard on not murdering them because they are nearby and look really murderable could have really nice benefits down the line.

[X] He attempts to resolve things peacefully. (20% chance of major penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations, 20% chance of minor penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations, 20% chance of major penalty to Mechanicus relations & minor bonus to Eldar relations, 20% chance of minor bonus to Mechanicus relations & major penalty to Eldar relations, 20% of minor bonus to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations)

Hmmmmmmm

We're going to need to do the learning about Eldar action next time it comes up, if this sort of thing is going to keep happening, seeing as this is twice now I'm fairly sure it will.

I mean, if you consider a 80% chance of stopping the war to be 'really lucky' then sure. The only real difference is if we upset them and if we do how much. I for one view stopping a war with millions if not billions of deaths worth the possibility of pissing them off in doing so.

That's quite a sizable leap, nowhere in any of those outcomes does it say that we peacefully defuse the situation only who we might piss off. Just because we got a major or minor dipolatic bonus/penalty doesn't mean we actually succeeded at preventing the war.

I think assuming that just because it doesn't explicitly say we defuse the situation to mean that we can't to be a sizable leap.

You're the one assuming that because we gained a minor diplomatic bonus in some of the outcomes means we prevented the war. It's possible we could piss both of them off while preventing violence from occurring, it's also possible (albeit unlikely) we could get a diplomatic bonus from both of them and the war still occurs.

No, I'm assuming that every outcome but 20% chance of major penalty to both Mechanicus & Eldar relations prevents the war, that some of the options have a relation bonus just shows that we were biased to one faction or in the best case cause them to make up (even if it only a little bit). I even explain that in one of my previous posts on just the last page.

Just because some of the options have a relation bonus doesn't mean we stopped the war from happening. The vagueness of the diplomatic option doesn't mean your extrapolation of it is correct.

@Oshha can you settle this for us, do the outcomes with diplomatic bonuses mean we succeeded in stopping the war?

I'm afraid that this is a try it and find out situation. Drake won't know how likely he is to avoid war, however, the only option with a chance of avoiding war is attempting to resolve things peacefully. Picking a side means siding with that faction in the upcoming conflict rather than attempting to avert the war.

The way I see it, trying to resolve things peacefully only has a 20% chance to get a worse outcome than picking a side a fighting, 40% chance of similar relation impact as picking a side and fighting and maybe stopping the fight, 20% of minor relation loss but almost definitely stopping the fight, and a 20% of improving relations with both and avoiding the fight.

Looking at it this way I see the 20% chance for a worse result to be worth the benefits.

There's enough death and destruction in the universe. Attempting to seek peace is worth the risk.

You can't have your cake and eat it. "Resolving things peacefully" how? Give them a slice of the world, either the mechanicus back off, or the exodites get genocided. And frankly siding with the mechanicus when they want to genocide a exodite world because of their greed is going against the federations values.
