Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

So why can some beings have beyond 5 dots and we can't? Like I'm not even talking gods and super demons we saw a white court vampire with beyond 5 dot stuff.

You're basically capped at 5 dots until your 'power stat' goes over 5*. For Wan Kuei, their power stat is Dharma, and they need to be at least a century old to get it at 6+. For us it's permanent Essence, for which the same applies. Dharma and Essence are not too dissimilar, as both represent enlightenment. Elder White Court vampires presumably have something similar similar. It's possible that the Red Court has something like VtM vampires, whose 'power stat' is 11-their Generation.

We have Excellencies instead.

* unless you're an infernalist, like the akuma.

Final note on the akuma because there is only so much I can say without spoilers, expect it to be strong, to take strategy and allies to deal with, you have gathered allies and have the start of a strategy. Do not get discouraged, Molly is not fighting this thing alone... and remember there is distension in the ranks of Kakuri, maybe try to use that. ;)

Ok, we have roughly 3 hours till down. Assuming that we spend most of that time in a bottle of bleach recovering essence, we can probably recover ~ 10 motes. We have 6 available now. Once we start the fight, as long as mooks are around for us to kill, we should have plenty of essence thanks to Murder is Meat. So we have roughly 6 motes to spend total.

[X] Plan: using what we know v 0.2
-[X] Get Harry in an attempt to turn the ley line trap around
--[X] Make him take Mouse with him as a bodyguard
--[X] Call Thomas and ask (not order) to also go with Harry
-[X] Using TTC make portraits for all the opposing forces, distribute them to your allies, including SI.
-[X] Ask Murphy to gather evidence for you to use as Crown focuses.
--[X] Use the evidence gathered to ask two questions: "how do the forces under lady Eiko's command (insert the list of forces gotten from previous question) fight" and "what are the weaknesses of the Kakuri's Will on Earth"
-[X] Using J's fake body and Lady Eiko's photograph learn the identities of would-be traitors in her midst, and a way to contacting them without notifying loyal Kakuri forces
--[X] Contact them just before going on the attack. In exchange for turning on their comrades, and bending the knee, without surrendering their souls, you'll extend your protection and guar them against Kakuri's wraith
---[X] Excellencies as appropriate
-[X] Get Bùshì Tùzǐ to safety, it might give away the game, but making sure she does not get another visit from the Akuma is more important
--[X] To the Last Station
-[X] Enough playing around, go straight to South Works as soon as the sun is up and clear out the enemy
--[X] Spend as much time as possible dispersed in a bleach bottle while travelling to restore your essence levels

Added two more questions. How the forces fight, and what is their heaviest hitter's weaknesses. Added Thomas to Harry's protection detail. Harry should have our super coffee, so should be wide awake now. That's 6 motes spent. We ask the questions about the factory when we get there.

What other allies do we have that we can call upon?

Hmm... Lydia can raise zombies. Maybe use that?

We need to know its strengths as well.

For example if this Greater Akuma had a high Hun before converting and has Internalise 7, Steel Soul, if we give it time it basically give itself a massive scene long Excellency to every Attribute. Internalise 7 is something it can learn itself, not something that takes a valuable Treatment or less valuable Investment to raise. That would mean we have to hit it by surprise, or it could be throwing a thirty dice pools around with a minute to power up.

Similarly, if it knows the example Yin Prana 8 discipline level, Touch of Rust it can corrode metal objects to rust to recharge its Chi with a touch.

How would you formulate the question? We are running into "way too much essence to spend, way too little time to do it, and not enough foci". I gathered "strengths" under "how do they fight"?

Just ask what it's abilities are. A lack of ability is a relative weakness. We know what the baseline weaknesses of a Wan Kuei are.

More broadly, the big thing is what I said before, lots of Wan Kuei abilities take some seconds to activate. To kill this thing we want it to be backstabbed by its own minions mid-ritual. We don't want it to be wearing its armour, have activated high level disciplines, or anything similar.

We want to be meeting up with them ahead of time and talking them into it. A prepared Greater Akuma would go through its minions like a hot knife through butter. If it discovers its in combat when the grenades start going off and the bullets start to fly its in much more trouble.

A few wooden golems would be nice.

If we're willing to wait a bit we could also try making some better guns/armor and bringing a few of the Jade dogs.
We have 3, maybe up to 9 hours until we have to attack, most likely. We definitely want to attack before noon.

Golems... Do we buy wooden statues, or do we make them? Probably buy, since that saves us motes. Lydia has no easy mote regeneration like we do - would it be more worthwhile to have her spend motes on golem making?

What the abilities are is very different from "what weaknesses does it have?". The first one is more about strengths. The second about how to best kill it.

My expectation is that it has no absolute weaknesses beyond the few universal Wan Kuei ones it retains, which we shoudl already know from our background knowledge of them and of Greater Akuma.

The only thing it will have is relative weaknesses, things it's not good at or limitations on its abilities, which we'd know by learning about them.

For example, knowing that its abilities don't include a surprise negator. Or knowing that it uses lots of smaller powers that need to be activated one by one but stack into something absolutely monstrous if given time to charge up.

Or knowing that it's massively empowered by being around lots of metal. Or knowing that it can laugh off attacks from metal weapons if given a chance to activate the right powers.

Or worse, if it knows Yin Nihilus, anyone that's not Molly that gets close to it will just drop dead.

There are lots of (implicitly) scene long disciplines that it can activate that have varying costs in Yin chi (which it can trivially recharge if it has Touch of Rust) that are incredibly deadly if stacked.

Nice update!
Also, for a note, that's an unusually kuei-jin heavy enturage. generally there would be more bakemono and devil children (born bakemono) then kuei-jin. Though, kuei-jin are easier to transport if they get fed Yin chi. Bakemono are probably local.
For all of them a single word, a single dark fate: bakemono
For setting where "free choice" is such a big thing it's funny how many beings/things can use you as a hell condom.
We have Excellencies instead.
well, Wan-kuei also have 'excellencies' of a sort (quite a few WoD splats do). 2 actually, demonic Kiai and Iron Soul ('good' discipline). Good thing is neither of these are thematically Kakuri.

On the other note, in general, Wan-Kuei sould be more unpleasant opponent for Knights then western ones. For a simple reason that they would be more likely to be good swordsman.

Ok, so, changes:
1) Moving the assault to 12:39 PM (that's solar noon, it's unlikely to help much, but might a bit). Hmm... We have an Order of Cauldron member who's gift is weather magic. @DragonParadox from what Molly knows, would she be able to make this day very, very sunny? At least in the area around the mill. Every little bit help.
2) Changed the question about the Greater Akuma to "what are its abilities"
3) Chaged the foci for the questions about traitors.
4) Added brewing healing potions if we have time

Internalise 7, Steel Soul, is basically an Attribute Excellency. It's also comically powerful in some circumstances, as it doesn't cost Chi or Willpower, just charge up time.

Basically, the Wan Kuei spends a turn concentrating and rolls their Hun trait, and for every success they get that number of automatic successes to spend on any action in the next two turns. That means the next turn they can use Steel Soul again, and charge up an arbitrary number of successes for when they finally take action. Automatic successes don't reduce the pool you roll, and with them you can exceed your total pool (like rolling all successes and spending a Willpower).

Even better, the second effect of the Discipline power is that you may instead spend those successes to get a bonus dice to an attribute for the rest of the scene. So once you've built up a big pile of automatic successes you then use them to boost an attribute.

So, if you have warning that enemies are incoming, you spend a few minutes in meditation, boost every Attribute to have comical levels of bonuses, and then spend the rest of the time until they arrive build up a massive pile of automatic successes to launch an alpha strike the moment they walk in the door.

This reflects certain martial arts novel tropes so is probably semi-deliberate, although not uncapped in the way it's written. Personally I'd say you can't go above the vampire's Hun rating in bonus Attribute dice or auto-successes available to increase a roll.

Yes, it's good, but lvl7 is so high only someone old and powerful would have it.

On the other hand, Iron Soul is only lvl4 and while it costs willpower, it's prerequisite is Blood Yoga which regenerates WP. The whole tree is pretty good. WP regeneration, mind reinforcement, ranged attack and excellencies.

I don't think we can ask how to contact that traitors. We need to ask what barriers are there to contacting the traitors without them being caught.

If we have enough foci/time we also really need to ask why they're turning traitor, and, ideally, ask what their plan to succeed is. That makes it much more likely that we can turn them. Knowing who the leader is of their plot would also really help. Matters are very different if it's Lady Eiko, or the Will of Kakuri, or one of the random lesser akuma.

Greater akuma doesn't have will of its own, as stated in the update. It can't rebel.

I don't think we have enough foci. Even for what we are already attempting. And we are definitely constrained by the rate of Essence recovery.

Why not? I mean, the result is likely to be a phone / ICQ number.

Also, at rank 6, the ability to feed directly from the dragon lines as much as you want without hurting anyone or damaging the fabric of reality.

As a side note, It's also possible the best purchase for a Dharma 6 century old Wan Kuei who hopes to win at Iris Bulb Commerce to make. You need Internalise not to get screwed over anyway.

It's funny that the Yama Kings deliberately make it possible to win at Irish Bulb Commerce and not have to sell any of your soul, to deliberately encourage you and others to keep at it next time you're in trouble. After all, they're confident you'll mess up one day...

Greater akuma doesn't have will of its own, as stated in the update. It can't rebel.

I don't think we have enough foci. Even for what we are already attempting. And we are definitely constrained by the rate of Essence recovery.

Greater Akuma do have free will and they can rebel against their master if they choose to. They're just reformatted not to want to at the point when they are given their treatments, and have to obey any orders their master later gives them. That doesn't stop them changing their mind later based on their experiences or magical mental effects. Emma-O can order them not to rebel and to act as if they were still loyal if he can communicate with them, but if they're incommunicado he can't do that.

One of Emma-O's greater akuma has rebelled before. It's very hard for them to rebel, and very likely futile, but it's not automatically so.

Each CCTV of a different traitor should be a different focus, and if we're learning secrets like this it should be essence neutral if we spread it out.

Why not? I mean, the result is likely to be a phone / ICQ number.

A barrier/obstacle might be that they a bound ghost sitting on their shoulder eavesdropping that we need to bypass somehow, for example.

You are conflating cause and effect and drawing erroneous and unfounded conclusions based on zero evidence. Again. In canon Infernal exaltations reacted to a simultaneous release of the whole of celestial exalted host (if I recall correctly, abyssals were also in black vault) as a result of a great ritual.

That they didn't similarly react to one exaltation being unearthed, then spending a lot of time chained, so the echoes of its unearthing fade, and then exalting one person, is not at all evidence that Black Vault isn't there. In fact that Emma-O, who, whole hubristic, is not stupid, is convinced that there are more black seeds out there, is a tangential evidence that there are other jnfernal exaltations buried deep in the NeverNever and, from there, that Black Vault is also there.
1)Molly Exalting was a significant magical event in its own right.
As was her activating Shintai for the first time
It is my opinion the other Exaltations would have noticed.

2)Usum as a coadjutor predates the Yama Kings. Hence he was being interrogated/tortured for ancient occult secrets.
The canon demon coadjutors of vanilla ExWoD dont; they came from the Thousand Hells, and were explicitly called to the shards by the shards themselves when they were ready to leave.

3)Vanilla ExWoD has 100x Abyssal Exaltations floating around and only 20x Infernal Exaltations. The Abyssal shards werent imprisoned in the Black Vault like the Celestial shards. They werent buried under Yomi Wan like the Infernal shards. They just stopped after their deathknights were captured/killed, and restarted after other they felt other Celestials restart.

We would be seeing the global impact of like a hundred Abyssal Exaltations a week after Molly Exalted.
Its been three or four months and nothing. Its not conclusive, but its suggestive. And if thats absent, I have no reason to assume thar the other stores of Exaltations exist in this setting either,

This is not vanilla ExWoD.
Informing her that we are planning to murder a USA citizen (I am fairly sure naagloshii qualifies) is more problematic than informing her that we are working to prevent an act of international terrorism (poisoning of leylines) and a theft of a nuclear weapon equivalent (our exaltation) by a rogue state (Kakuri under Emma-O).

In both these cases we are acting as either vigilantes, or independent nation states. Only naagloshii is small potatoes compared to akuma operation.
I dont think it does. Broken Seeker has no legal identity, and possibly not even a human form.
Killing one may or may not leave a body.

Eiko et al otoh are literally physical enough to check into a hotel with their entourage, which probably contains mortals as well.
Physical enough to enjoy whiskey. And many of their crimes arent actually demonstrable under mortal law.
This is all legally based on the opinion of one minor after all.

Thats my point. Vigilantism isnt actually legal in the US.
Not trusting her to recognize her own and her people limits and acting to the best of her ability when informed of the situation is the very definition of infantilizing her.
No it isnt, no more than it would be for a federal cop to make that decision for a state cop in a federal matter.
Or a battalion commander to make that decision for a squad leader.

She doesnt have all the information pertinent to making the same decisions we do.
And critically, she cant have, because it would expose capabilities we want to keep secret, incriminate Molly, and make Murphy party to crimes state and federal.

COMMENTARY
Hah. Saw that movie on a big screen :) Spawn was PG13 and released in Aug 1997.
Assujing they saw it the same year, Molly would have been 9, Daniel 8. Or they could have seen it in a later year, of course; some theaters show older movies.

Got to Tuzi. Guessed that was going to happen.
Now we have four people at risk; three mortals and Tuzi. Sigh.
Gonna need to move them before sunset.

So.
Eiko. One greater akuma. Seventeen lesser akuma. 4 bakemono. J.
Thats 24 people. Five of them mortals, at least one of whom is a minor. Divide and conquer I think.

Kakuri's WILL? Ah, a True Anathema.
Finally something worth getting out of bed for; an appropriate playmate we'll have no compunctions shanking. So far gone it doesnt have a name any longer. I guess thats who has had J for a while now.

If its living in abandoned buildings, that suggests its too altered to even try to pass for human in daylight.
So we're probably looking at, minimum, Crimson Tiger General Treatment:
+4 Demon Shintai Aspects(permanent, unconcealable)
4 points to distribute between Str and Stamina,
4 points between Brawl and Melee,
3 levels to distribute between Demon Shintai and Black Wind.

Potentially Saint of the Godbody Treatment as well, which is just 8 levels to distribute among the Shintais, with the exception of Demon Shintai. Those are the two Soul Treatments that cant be hidden.

Thats in addition to increased Attribute and Ability cap, increased Chi capacity to 30, immunity to Obligation, Immortality and no Free Will. And the ability to regain power however they wish to feed, whether flesh, blood or draining chi. I guess it is probably why all those lesser akuma still look worn; I doubt its comfortable to be around, and if its draining chi from around it.....

We have been assuming Eiko's in charge.
There's an even 50:50 split that its whatever this new dude is. Basically if Eiko's a Forsaken of Emma-O, this could be Shaidar Haran or Moridin. Or it could just be a dumb brute. Jury's still out.

Still female though, because Emma-O's fetish.

But if there's an unseen boss, we have to pay attention to what we got from the lesser akuma Aoto.
Because that vision of a factional split among the akuma between those who want to break free and those who want to serve could well involve Eiko.

There's a potential opportunity there.

South Works

South Works - Wikipedia

Former steel works shut down in the early 1990s. Soil contamination preventing redevelopment.
Might count for Transcendent Lord of Flies purposes.
And there's water for BSM and taking a fight underwater, out of sight.

Located in South Chicago. South Chicago is a working class, lakefront neighborhood, 75% Black, 20% Hispanic.
$28k median household income, crime at 400% national levels. Odds are people have gone missing around here recently as well, but either have faded into background crime stats or just not been reported.

Notably well outside Chinatown.Citation:

South Works is in the South Chicago community area, which is numbered 46 on the map.
I dont know if their Dragon Line fuckery aimed at Chinatown would extend here.

Probably wont. But we need to talk to Harry to be sure.

It's literally one exaltation vs. several hundred exaltations + a major ritual. More than two orders of magnitude difference. Molly getting her kingdom might be on the same scale. Molly exalting and using shintai? Nah. Like, we have evidence that mystically sensitive people in the same city didn't notice our shintai.
Broken Seeker has no legal identity,
That's a very big assumption right there.

This question doesn't actually give us a way to contact the rebels, even if the barriers exist (which is not a given). Better to simply ask how to contact them.

Also... @DragonParadox - the demolition workers. Do they have explosives? And do explosives count as environmental damage? Because causing a big boom, and tanking it via active TLF might be a strategy.

They do have explosives, but no they are not environmental, not unless some place explodes constantly, like some alien planet that had regular gas explosions or the like.

Also, we need to be careful in case one of the opposition Wan Kuei knows the five dot Feng Shui power Chi Ward. That allows warding a location so that it's impossible for any supernatural creature to enter or leave it in any way while the ward is still up, explicitly no matter how strong they are. As we don't know counter-magic, that could either trap us inside or keep us out.

Kakuri's WILL? Ah, a True Anathema.

I'm not sure that Emma-O will have been able to capture any mortal Bodhisattva on the edge of becoming a Buddha here, so may not be able to grant Saint of the Godbody. He's also very Yin, so I'm not convinced at all about Crimson Tiger General rather than Graceful Reed Angel Treatment. As this is a delicate ritual and it's a treatment that can be applied simultaneously with others, I'd expect the other Treatment to be Beatifically Enhanced Tutor Treatment.

Also remember that they'll have a full set of Investments as well as the much more expensive Treatments, it's a waste for them not to.

Note that, as I say, 'no free will' doesn't actually mean no free will. It just means very constrained ability to act on their free will. Greater Akuma can politic against each other and scheme for advantage in the courts of their masters. They can even defect or betray their masters if their personalities develop in that direct after their treatments and they don't get caught and ordered to act differently.

Usum directly states that it has no will of its own in the update. I trust him.

Usum may be wrong. Remember his occult knowledge was very out of date, so he may not have heard of Tashimoto Hanko. He may also be operating on the same definition of free will that says that Mab doesn't have any.

I don't think the Crown can tell us how to solve our problems. Only facts about existence like what the difficulties with contacting them without being caught are.

Current working opinion, with 1 as the most important:

OPINION
[???] Investigate the body, you might still get something useful out of it
[2] Get Bùshì Tùzǐ to safety, it might give away the game, but making sure she does not get another visit from the Akuma is more important
[3] Stake out the Hotel, maybe you can get your own chat with Lady Eiko before things get... uncivilized
[LAST] Enough playing around, go straight to South Works as soon as the sun is up and clear out the enemy
[1] Get Harry in an attempt to turn the ley line trap around

Basically we arent done shaping the battlefield.
If we're playing with a True Anathema-equivalent, we need to be on our A-game.

Most important would be to get Harry to start working on the Dragon Line thing; both because of reversing the ritual thing, and because True Anathema allegedly love to feed by draining the local geomancy as a spite thing. So its entirely possible to poison it.
He has Bob and Little Chicago to help him work at a distance.

Then transport Tuzi to Last Station.
If we can make the time, by around 9am we should visit the morgue and take another look at the dead body.

After that visit Eiko in her hotel suite around 12pm.
She isnt Incarna, and there's a good chance Demonic Primacy might work on her. At best we turn her, at worst we decapitate a chunk of the local akuma command network.

We look to hit the akuma in roughly 12 hours, around 2-3pm.

Writeins would probably be
1)Calling the other shen to move their humans(I have reason to believe their hideouts at X, Y, Z have been compromised. Move them).
2)Visiting Father Forthill to bless as much holy water as can fit into the containers in the bed of Michael's truck.
3)Rendered Villain Dispersal in between to recover Essence
4)Have Charity or Daniel call you out sick at school :V

Holy water doesn't effect Wan Kuei, unless something has been changed here. Greater akuma can freely feed on poisoned chi, so we're not going to have much look trying to poison the dragon lines.

We really, really, really need information, need to split the enemy part so they fight each other, and the element of surprise is probably crucial.

We need to bring our A+ game here, and treat the opposition like a dug in superior force.

After that visit Eiko in her hotel suite around 12pm.

She may count as an ancient vampire though.
