Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Still a bad idea to let our mouth write checks we aren't sure our ass can cash.

If we end up in a situation where we can't for one reason or another then we'll make a liar of ourselves.
Notice how Anna Ash's reaction to her friend dying wasnt to declare war, or to scour Chinatown for other potential targets?
They currently have neither the resources, nor the magical, mental or physical preparations for it.
One member's mega warded safehouse does not a supernatural-fighting organization make.
The purpose of the Ordo is mutual defense:
As far as requirements of membership go there is nothing to worry about: being available for common workings, generally protective ones, offering sanctuary to members on the run and, Anna had hesitated mentioning this, fighting when all else fail. From the smile you catch a glimpse reflected in the polished kitchen counter, you do not think there is any doubt to anyone present about your willingness to put an abrupt end to any hunts involving the members of the Order of the Cauldron. Part of you wants to flourish your sword to make a point, but now is not the time to show off.
The shamans are not members, but they are also minor practitioners of Chicago. It's in the Order's core interest to shelter them. Not fight for them. Shelter them. We (Molly and Lydia) are the iron fist that smashes predators teeth in. Ordo members are not, but they can and should provide shelter.

I don't really buy that because while it's possible to argue mutual interests the ordo itself outside of us works by hiding and being too much trouble to go after. Their core strategy doesn't support being expeditionary about this stuff.

The expansion into the paranet was a fundamental change in how they operated, not an expansion of existing behaviors.

Even accepting your argument, Lydia and Molly are both ordo members. They're also the ones best equipped for this task, to the point that the plan for actual members running for cover is to come to hide behind one of them.

Bane is a home security system, not a fortress to break our enemies against.

Edit: dropped extra word

Bane was stated to be enough to stop naagloshii in its tracks. It is very much a fortress. It's quite likely that in terms of protection, the wards at Helen's apartment are right now the best wards in Chicago period, barring divine bodyguards at Carpenter household.

1)Read your citation. Mutual defense, not community policing.
The Chinese shamans are not members of Cauldron, and Cauldron isnt obliged to risk their lives and the lives of their loved ones by putting themselves in the line of fire, which is what sheltering them entails.

Even the canon Paranet prioritized protecting its own members, and this is not the Paranet.

This isnt running off a Whampire or a gang of ghouls or malicious spirits. Its not shanking a Pathfinder cult.
This is a major power of Yomi Wan sending a war party of akuma to town. Anna Ash didnt even realize that was a thing, and as leader of Cauldron, she is better informed than many of the rank and file.

This is well outside the level of danger they were even aware was possible a week ago, and they are not currently invested in the resources or preparations that would make them a hard enough target to reliably see off such attentions even in the short term.
Good intentions dont save you from going splat. Bane administers a safehouse, not a castle.

2) Should?

It is not our prerogative to decide what adults should do. Or to volunteer them without prior discussion of what this involves.
They assume a significant amount of supernatural risk by coming to the attention of Yomi Wan's players, and unlike dealings with many other supernatural threats, Yomi Wan's malice can follow you even after death if you are unlucky.

We dont make that sort of decision for them. We shouldnt make that sort of decision for them.
We wouldnt appreciate someone making that decision for us.

The strength of the wards doesn't take away from the fact that it's an apartment building and no one who lives in it signed up to be targets.

Helen is on board for protecting other ordo members because that was the deal for getting community ward raising support, but she isn't a cop or a militia member.

This is especially relevant because she can't defend herself very well when outside the wards, unlike Lydia, and this is going to take long enough for that to matter.
You're also still thoughtlessly making promises in your vote, which is bad practice with supernaturals.

We should try to avenge them, but if they flee the city I don't want to be obligated to hunt them.

No, Bane oversees a safehouse, not a fortress.
Its first defence is its secrecy, it doesnt control territory, it cannot operate under sustained siege, and its got no facilities for projecting power or supporting people who move outside it.

There is no current assurance that the OPFOR arent able to substitute Chinese- or Asian-American victims with gweilo.
Thats why we told the Order to lay low, avoid Chinatown and avoid going out at night if at all possible.

Cauldron are in the same general target pool of supernaturally-talented victims that the dead Asian-Americans were. They are actively disincentivized against letting Emma-O's supernatural enforcers discover that there's a conveniently pre-sorted group of supernatural sacrifices in the same city in the event that they run out of Chinese/Asian victims.

The general principles for EMTs and airline passengers apply here: dont make yourself a victim in an attempt to save others.

Bane is quite powerful for what he is because he is supping of the same primordial undercurrent Ancient Sorcery works off of, but his domain is still a postage stamp and worse yet he has no fallback, if you are going to use him as a fortress guardian it would make sense to give him some backup.

We definitely should equip curse doggo with fortune armor, and enchanted claw weapons. Probably a backup zombie or two.

I got to admit, I really like our puppy grown of ancient power.
Considering Molly's perception problem we really could use an all seeing eye dog. Might be able to make a few by getting a bunch of dogs then unleashing their inner darkness. Would be better if we had more animal ken, but given they would be creatures of darkness we could likely manage.

Arc 6 Post 11: A Muse and a Meeting
A Muse and a Meeting

2nd of October 2006 A.D.

Death is the act and the reason....you resolve to call Lydia, before returning your attention to the grieving spirit. "I am sorry for your loss" you begin awkwardly, giving the spirit time to compose herself. "But to keep this evil from claiming more lives, I think it would be best to not....startle people into possibly running into the sights of their hunters by showing up unannounced at their door." You pause for a moment, then continue. "Can you get us a meeting with their guardians?"

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 10/12

"They do not love me." Bùshì Tùzǐ answers darkly. "They name me thief and claim my sorrows are of my own making." She shivers head to toe as if with sudden chill, but some deeper emotion is behind it, is behind it equidistant of fear and lust, greed and loss. "Did you ever smoke?"

"Smoke?" you ask bemused, not sure where this is going, but quite sure she is not going to do as you ask until she has this off her chest one way or another.

"Or drink, pop pills, take a ride on the magic dragon, have a dance with the green fairy?" The spirit shakes her head and glances at dad. "Oh never mind you would never say with him here, the God of the Book does not approve, but you understand the attraction at least in theory yes? Give up a bit of your health, a moment of your life so that you might live all the brighter. So it is with those like J who would lay with the seri, other men, jealous men, call them fools. Other spirits call us monsters because we scratch our lovers and cast their lifeblood on the sheets. Do they care that we explain the cost? Does it matter to them than pain is pleasure and the scars are a path to understanding? No, no a thousand times no, they will not understand, they do not believe in my my love of J was more than lust, more than merely using him and being used, for how can a man love the brandy glass, the cigarette, the absinthe?"

"I like her style," Usum purrs thoughtfully at the back of your mind as you do everything in your power not to dwell too deeply on the fact that you are discussing spiritual S&M in front of your martial arts teacher and your dad.

"The others blame you for his death?" you ask gently. "That is why you wanted to surprise them and not speak to them?"

"I want to throw the lurking shadow's head at their feet!" the shape-shifter answers with such venom that it twists her pretty features into a mask of rage. "But sending investigators will do, better than groveling and asking for a meeting, better than being forced to swear vows not to 'steal' their chosen. I do not steal. Mortals give themselves to me and I to them. I don't bring death... not like that... J didn't die because I weakened him, he died because of it... because of it."

With these last words she starts to sob quietly into the sheet she had wrapped herself in.Head bowed she is the mourner for the youth who has fallen into the spring-flooded river, she is the sweetheart weeping for the soldier who will never make if home from the war, the girl standing motionless by the empty sickbed.

Sorrow draws you in, that too you understand in a flash, creatures of the threshold, guardians of the dead yes, but also as caustic to touch for the living in the midst of such strong emotions as lye to bare skin. Luckily I have a hazmat suit, you think, centering your mind upon a throne of brass, in the flame of the soul's purpose for in this moment your purpose is to reach out to Bùshì Tùzǐ and hug her. "Shh... it's OK, I don't blame you, no one blames you and if any other asshole spirits try to get you to bind yourself with vows and promises just because they are scared you are going to steal their shamans they have another thing coming."

Spent 1 Willpower -> Now at 7/9 (IPP)
Gained 2 Essence (Urge) -> Now at 12/12

"Th...thanks, hope I didn't get any tears or snot on you," she says into your shoulder before slowly detaching. "I'm gonna talk to the others, just be aware they're not going to like that you got me as a messenger."

"That is alright, we'll deal with it," you assure her with one more pat on the back.

A twist in space and a racing cat later and she is gone.

Lydia shows up about two hours later heralded by the sound of screeching tires and an only slightly more quiet Midnight. She seems almost more shocked at the idea that a death spirit would be insulted that way than at the murders, though she has no more of an idea than you do at what the servants of Kakuri may be doing killing shamans, particularly since the deaths do not show any of the spacial or temporal patterns of a ritual. Granted you could simply be missing a lot of data points as Brother Divisimar pointed out, but the only way to solve that is to... ask.

Green Tortoise Tea does not seem in the least magical at first sight, nor at second and third, a line of neon-green over a cartoon tortoise that looks like it should be having a race with Bugs Bunny in one of those old timely cartoons its red wood and cream stone display windows flow into the touristy side of the neighborhood smoothly, right down to the pop song drifting out in place of anything more atmospheric, yet this you are told is where you are to meet at least two of the spirit protectors of some of the last shamans in Chicago

"Do you want me to come in with you?" Bùshì Tùzǐ, now dressed in a leopard print pantsuit, of all improbable things asks.

How do you make your entrance?

[] Make it very clear you are powerful and in charge, willing and able to deal with the servants of Kakauri, no matter who they are or how many of them

[] Let dad take the lead, being able to get sincerity across well is part of the job

[] Brother Divisimar has the most real world experience in dealing with shen, let him take the lead

[] Write in

OOC: You guys rolled 10 successes and I had to decide how the cynical shapeshifter would go about spilling her heart to you about the not-quite-socially-acceptable nature of her relationship with the shaman whose life she shortened by her company.

@DragonParadox do secrets of spiritual S&M count as magical secrets for the purpose of restoring Essence?

Reminds me of this.

Might be worth developing a version of maggot mana plague without the mind control. Against the nature of our hells or not.

Edit: @Yog Thats... not a magic secret? It's a secret about their relationship.

I still think that calling it mind control isn't exactly fair. Or at the very least gives the wrong idea. It's just getting to people's heart though their stomach in a more reliable way then average. Giving Pizza to little fairies seems more morally dubious considering the dramatic effects.

While kindness is indeed in character for Molly, it is not foundational enough to who she is in this case to get you willpower back just from this, might change depending on how this meeting goes.

Hmm... yeah I think especially given than it came with some risk if you had missed that perception it should have, one moment.

The mechanisms of it (willing sacrifice, consent, magical power transfer through sex, and True Love between a man and a spirit) might be. Unlikely though. Still, we could probably sit her down with Thomas, and work something out about being burned by True Love. I mean, this here is a practice similar to what Raiths do, from my understanding, only it's consensual, and can be done by those who hold True Love for each other. There's definitely something here to do SCIENCE! MAGIC! with our whampire minions.

Given that we got it from 10 successes, it does really seems like she blames herself and is listening to the mockeries of others even if they're false, because I do think the accusations are baseless, if he had died from actual complications of their relationship? There might have been things to say (though still not the ones said), but there? Killed by a far superior enemy who is killing way more than him? Really baseless hate, probably created by fear in fact, fear that the one who killed her lover would kill their shaman, and blaming her to pretend to be in control of the situation, that they aren't just lucky, that if it came for them they wouldn't die all the same.

If their reaction to us is consistent with that of other minor practicioners they'll definitly buy that we can deal with the Akuma.
