Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Now that we have our feet under us I kind of want to repay all the people who helped save us from the winter court.

  • Mom and Dad are likely already covered. I consider Molly not running away like she would have more than enough.
  • Dresden gave up his debt to the summer lady. I want to make sure he is well compensated.
  • Karen Murphy got demoted. I don't know how to get her job back, but it seems like a worthy quest.
  • Tomas didn't give up much, but he did put himself in danger. We should definitely see about making him our minion as a reward.

[X] Yes, trade diamonds for 50,000 Dollars from Lydia now
-[X] Assure Lydia that we'll make up the difference with more diamonds later if this batch sells for less than its appraisal value.
--[X] And let her know we have a spare night or two, you know, if she wants something sparkly for herself. It's not like it costs us more than some time, and she has helped us plenty.
-[X] She has a contact for selling diamonds... could she also facilitate buying gold? You always wanted to try your hand at making jewelry.

Its not really an ethical issue since we absolutely can cover this. If for some reason she can't get anything off of these at all we'll just make something else to a greater value to make up for time wasted as well.

You know... She is having trouble emancipating because she doesn't have responsibilities...

What if she went into business with us? I bet we could make a killing selling jewelry. Not just loose stones, but full on artistic gold and precious gemstones done extravagantly. She can likely get us an in to get the raw supplies we need (gold, platinum) and she gets to have a responsibility she can take to the lady she is trying to get to agree to her emancipation.

And we can help her with that too. It would be an excuse for us to meet the lady and diplomacy her, maybe sneak a cyber demon onto her phone and look for ways to make Lydia's path easier.

I have exactly zero doubt that we can't turn $1000 dollars of gold into $100,000 dollars of jewelry, and we can do it above board with an accountant and taxes so it's actually legitimate. We could even spin it as mundane. Make some brass stuff. She has a way to have seen our skill because she is dating our brother. Maybe we tried a piece with real gold on a lark and she passed it to an appraiser, and when it returned worth way more than we put in we realized there was a business investment opportunity. Molly just happens to be a once in a generation genius when it comes to jewelry making.

100% legitimate above board legal income. That has a lot of value.

For the low low price of a couple of nights work a year to bring in six figures, with the option to put in overtime to make more money in short order.

Actually, yeah, the more I think about it, the more that going into business with Lydia seems like a good idea. After all, we have been thinking of using our superhuman crafting skills to make money for basically the entire thread, the only thing standing in our way was finding the contacts to sell our stuff for what it's worth. Lydia is perfectly placed to do that, and going into business would help check all of the boxes needed to help Lydia emancipate. And we would have an excuse to meet that bureaucrat as Lydia's official business partner, and hit her with our social Excellencies. After all, Lydia can only use her magic on Manipulation rolls, not Charisma ones like we can, and that's a big part of why she's struggling with those rolls. We can probably bulldoze this lady in social combat.

But that's how it helps Lydia. It helps us by giving us an easy way to turn our crafting abilities into large amounts of money with a relatively low action cost, and that's honestly enough for me to spend an AP on this idea next turn. We are coming up on the next turn vote, after all.

Our crafting time very quickly should become too precious for mere money. It should be spent on either making wonders for our party members, including Lydia, or earning something beyond mortal currency, unless it's obscene amounts of said currency. Which is why we should move from gems to art pieces. My proposition is knife and maybe sword making. There's a large collector market for those, and we could most likely make genuine (or close enough) damascus steel, which hasn't been fully reproduced as of yet. Art quality knives, swords and other tools made out of damascus steel and with precious gems in them should easily go for hundreds of thousands and more. There are probably a lot of middle eastern rich guys who would gladly buy those.

Ok, but we can always stop. Right this moment it would be a way to make bank, and getting that initial pile of a million dollars sounds really useful to make a whole lot of mundane problems just go away.

We can start the enterprise now, and relegate the actual gem-making to the Hell-demons or Mollyclones later on. Right now it is as much as a way to earn the monies as a way to help L.

I don't even think we should rely on gem making for the mundane side of things. Once we get going we can just get raw stones and cut them ourselves. Ideally our mundane income should have a mundane explanation. We want that paper trail showing material in to material out. It would also greatly cut down the time it takes to do the crafting because we don't need to crush carbon into diamond.

We don't even need to specifically make jewelry. We could have Lydia figure out what we can make to sell for the biggest profit given the contacts she has. It's not like we have to worry about explaining our magically omni-disciplinary crafting skills to her. She can easily find the best market to sell mass-produced masterworks in for maximum profit. Then we just make whatever she tells us will sell for the most.

You misunderstand me. The issue is not that she'll notice per se. The issue is how she'll react. NWS is a targeted charm that would be affecting Mab. She would be in her rights to consider this action to be an attack, or to incur a debt from us to her. Excellencies affect us. There's no debt there. Active targeted charms affect Mab, incurring obligations and opening us to retaliation.
I dont think this is plausible.
If it did, Mab's glamor in our first encounter would also count as an attack, and it didnt, and wasnt meant to.
Neither does fae glamor in general.

Hell, we didnt use the Crown in that scene because we decided it wasnt worth the risk of letting her know we could do that, not because we thought it would count as an attack.

Rici sounds like he's a mob lawyer. Or something else.
And the story has been deliberately written to prevent us actually meeting him.
Hmm.

50k for 33 carats of jewel quality stones, with no heat? No sign they were obtained via criminal activity? Not great.
Not terrible, but not great either.
It sounds much better when you realize that's ten thousand dollars per stone.

Still an unsatisfactory rating in my opinion.
We should probably look for better deals elsewhere, instead of making him exclusive.
Maybe Thomas.

Checking 2007 tax brackets, an income of 50k has a liability of 25% federal + 3% state, meaning a tax burden of max $14,000.
So we have $36,000 to spend.

You know... She is having trouble emancipating because she doesn't have responsibilities...
Not deprived, existing home, old enough to care for herself, unwilling to go into a care home, existing legal arrangements for her welfare. The DCFS case officer probably has like a couple dozen more cases a lot more urgent than a upper class kid pushing for legal emancipation three months before she would legally qualify under Illnois law.

The rest is Lydia just being a teenager and venting to a friend.
Her father only went missing six days ago, on July 22. Its July 28 now.
Legal shit has always taken time to get in motion.

Actually, yeah, the more I think about it, the more that going into business with Lydia seems like a good idea
Not particularly. If we want to see her DCFS officer right now, we could just go along as her friend. Thats all.
And she's Resources 4. She doesnt need money, and being in business is not a requirement anyway.

School attendance frankly benefits her more here, but with Academics 3 she's got Masters degree level knowledge.
High school isnt going to benefit her much unless the intent is just socialization.
She should be looking to university courses for certification to match her knowledge.

And thats the sort of thing that impresses family court judges.

No there arent. There REALLY arent.
There isnt a large market for high end melee weaponry, as a look around Google will tell you. Expensive swords are valued for their antiquity, not their crafting quality.

The market for jewelry and precious stones is much larger, by several orders of magnitude, because men and women both buy jewels and jewelry, for themselves and each other.
From rappers and athletes with jewelled grills to high end bankers with jewelled rings, tie clips and watches.

From middle class women with diamond engagement rings to socialites wearing ten years salary around their necks.

Only a subset of primarily Western men buy expensive melee weapons, and thats for themselves. The market is tiny.
Jewelry otoh is an actual industry that shows up on global economic balance sheets and involves millions of people yearly.
The global jewelry market is estimated to be worth ~$270 billion in 2022.

So I have been reading about the Kue-Jin and that prophecy of the begining of the sixth age which tells us all about the new replacement of the August Personage of Jade (aka God) which is thought to be one of the Yama kings and that all the context of infernals World of Darkness/Exalted crossover is to obtain that throne and began the sixth age. And I just thought that if the prophecy is true Molly might be the best option for heaven. Not only her nature as a creature of hell fills the prophecy but also she is technically a baby primordial to be born meaning that she will also have enough power to fill the role she is given. If you count also that she is not Evil and follows the will and religion of the Christian God and you have the best possible candidate. Lucifer is probably very pissed at this moment while Michael might be having a party in heaven.

Ah, no you have 50,000 to spend after tax, Lydia is not going to make you do your taxes to find out how much you can spend.

I assumed that Clippy is encrypting our communications. It would be very easy for it to do. Did we forget to arrange that?

It's just we hack so many other people it seems like common sense that we should should be following basic data security on our own devices.

QUESTION
OOC, would you prefer us to leave Signore Rici alone? Instead of have the cyberdevils poke around?

Because I dont see a need to make you do worldbuilding for a side character if they are not significant or if you have no use for them in the narrative going forward.
I ask because between Dresden, her Crown and cyberdevils, Molly has pretty good information resources.

Neither does fae glamor in general.
AoE effect vs. targeted effect. With AoE effects, like Demonic Primacy of Essence, it can be argued that we are not targeting Mab, but it's that she entered the field of effect on her own. With Naked Wicked Souls, we are making a deliberate attack on Mab/s privacy. It's something to consider.

There isnt a large market for high end melee weaponry, as a look around Google will tell you. Expensive swords are valued for their antiquity, not their crafting quality.
If you look at 10 most expensive knives in google, you'll see that modern knives go for as much as 2 million. Market size is hard to find (or at least I wasn't able to do so), admitedly, but you have to understand that high end knives, swords, etc, are, essentially, a type of masculine jewelry. There's a large, if not particularly publizied market there, same as with custom firearms.

Now, I am not saying that jewelry isn't more profitable. It probably is (but only if we start passing our jewels as natural, which I have moral qualms about). But that's all it is - profitable. At least melee weapons can be used when needed.

Please do not take it as me opposing making jewelry, at least in some quantities.

Ah. Fair enough.

  1. You guys can totally poke him, just be aware that if you do any hacking into private files he may well be upset. Just because he is Lydia's ally does not mean he is Molly's
  2. Speaking of Lydia, she has been added as a companion on the front page, the question marks are for her armor which you guys have not had the chance to see in action so far
