Everywhere you look to or visit has become a hub of activity. The new sewers are being laid into the ground at break-neck speed, construction crews racing against each other to build the most kilometers of the newly designed system. Canals within the interior of the Island become wider and cleaner with every passing day. More water is transported into the interior to better regulate the rice harvests and other crops. In contrast, your specialists within the drinking-water treatment plant report that the water has never been cleaner! It is a good thing to do, even if you have to acknowledge that the latter part only indicates how bad the water had previously been. Nevertheless, diseases have gone down, and that alone makes the effort worth it.

Repair of the damaged Foundry starts and ends with little fuss or dangers, especially once the dangerous chemical remnants have been cleaned away. (Whose idea was it to make live tests of the Iron Tiger Fuel without any lab tests anyway?) New ovens and smelters are put in place where the old ones have been damaged or destroyed; walls are patched up, reinforced, or entirely built anew, with furniture and safety railings re-installed again. By the end of the effort, workers are already starting their shifts again while new paint is being applied, and iron once more begins to flow in, with iron coming out.

He can only hope that the chemicals won't ruin the soil beyond usability.

Not one of them moves even a muscle, though you are more than capable of seeing the silent terror and shine of sweat they try to hide. "NOT TOMORROW," you continue, glaring at each person for a second each, enough to make them avert their gaze in fear, "NOT IN A WEEK!"

The door opens as a young woman in the uniform of an agent steps into the room, a packet of binders held in her arms. You ignore her for now, continuing to scream at the useless waste of flesh before you.

"AND NOT IN A YEAR! STEEL FOUNDRIES DON'T EXPLODE! THEY, AT WORST, MAKE A FUCKING MESS, BUT NOT LILAC FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS!" With heaving breaths, you sink back into your chair, the anger and fury still visible on your face as you very much try to reign in your emotions while you gesture for the young agent to state why your guards let them inside.

"W-we got them," she timidly says after a moment.

Every head in the room snaps to her face, including yours, as you had been too busy thinking up a storm about who could have blown up the foundry. "What?" One of the SP-Men says, a sentiment echoed by nearly everyone within their mind.

The agent shifts uncomfortably under the gazes of her superiors superiors superiors superiors and Great Leader before laying her folders onto the table. "The autopsies and witness reports have finished after we completed the investigations to the several break-ins into armories and stores we had been alerted to the night before the explosion. All of the people within the foundry were those deemed politically unreliable or disruptive, with most of their conspirators being currently being rounded up as I speak. We have enough evidence to convict everyone, including statements, recordings, manifestos, and declarations the dissident groups had prepared to issue later today."

All of you stare at her for long enough that she starts to fidget uncomfortably, everyone trying to comprehend what she had just said.

The headache gets only worse as you read the literal kilos of evidence she had handed out.

Yong found his footing sure and true as he made his way up the steep, winding trail. Yet he reminded himself that the same would not be true for his temporary wards.

For today, he was serving as a guide.

The small trail of researchers and students trudged along in his wake, leaving miniature puddles of sweat along the path as they clambered up the trail then paused in moments to catch their breath. What they were here for, he knew not, exactly. Something about finding natural vents and whatnot, that the mountain hid such spots that would help power the nation.

It was a volcano, they insisted. But unless it erupted, Yong thought, it would remain a mountain to him.

He wasn't completely unaware, of course. As someone who'd recently left the army for making a self-sufficient living in the mountain's raw wilderness, he still carried the hard-earned lessons of his past career. While not quite the gray-haired visage of a general, he wasn't exactly the young spy man he used to be. His boundless vigor and fiery energy had slowly given way to the surety if a man who thought out his next moves and efficiently carried them out with minimal energy needed.

This calm had served him well in drilling new recruits as a sergeant, and the stern demeanor he cultivated brought the discipline needed in his kids' lives. He took great pride in watching them find their way in the army, some of them being orphans or coming from less fortunate or ideal families. But the Great Leader's rise to power had heralded a great change, not just for the nation and her people, but Yong as well.

It was time to move on.

He'd left his thirty-year career the day after the Speech. While his old colleagues had worried for the timing, he'd told them he sincerely believed that they had a great future ahead of them, but that he wanted to greet that future with a fresh start, on his own terms. And certainly not with the thirst for belonging he once had as he joined the army at the young age of 16, after leaving the orphanage.

Not all of his friends understood, of course, at least not all of them. But they had accepted it.

Hence why he now led this panting, heaving, physically unfit troop of academics up the mountain, after hearing their whole spiel about doing their part of Guangchou. They may not be soldiers, but they were patriots, in their own way.

And just like that, he'd made up his mind. Maybe one day he'd rejoin the army, when the nation and his people needed his strength, his experience… to fight off traitors and dissidents from within, or opportunists and would-be conquerors from without…

But until then, he'd guide people up and down the mountain, witness its beauty, its natural wonders. And as for this group, maybe he'd even lead them to the pair of hot springs he'd found sitting quite near each other. One for the men, the other for the women, to help them relax and appreciate the work they'd put in making the trip.

But only after they've worked up quite a sweat.

You chant that mantra in your head as you make the short trip to your children's room. Their cries growing louder and louder a sure sign as any that you're coming close to your destination.

It has been exactly 5 days since you temporarily banished the staff charged with seeing to your children's needs. You'd told them you wished to care for your children personally, at least for a few days. And with the exhaustion and birthing pains your wife went through, you'd also insisted that she let you handle the kids while she rested up in bed.

Even as Jing Mai quickly regained her strength within days, something the doctors claim is unheard of and grounds for a new medical study, you stubbornly insisted on maintaining the arrangement for at least one week. Your wife, of course, could see to and visit the children during the day, but seeing to their needs and demands at night and in the early mornings was your sole purview.

As you enter the room, you head straight for the cribs. Over the days, you'd grown used to their needs and wants. Rather than hunger, at this time they simply wish to be held. And that's what you do. Lifting your daughter and placing her in your non-dominant hand, you lift your son with your dominant one, carrying them both to the simple yet sturdy chair placed near the corner of the room.

You sway them both gently in your arms, mumbling soft nothings to them as they grow quiet and calm at the sound of your voice.

It's times like these that you wonder all the things your father left unsaid. All the things he couldn't do or say or express to his one living family and child. About life, about the future, about anything, really. You wonder if he ever felt the same way as you do as you watch your infant son and daughter fall asleep to your gentle lullaby.

You wonder about your mother. Where is she? Is she still alive? Does she love you? DID she love you? What would she say to you now? All questions you think you may never have the answer to.

But not your children. No.

As you carry them back to their cribs. You set your mind to the future. You imagine all the things you would tell them as they grow up. All the praises you'd give them as they accomplish their dreams and goals. The encouragements as they face their trials and tribulations. The commiserations as they feel defeat and failure. And your gratitude as they succeed at the one thing you've ever expected of them, for coming into your life.

"Sweet dreams, my darlings. Sleep well, knowing your father loves you very much."


Note: Too corny? Was listening to this while writing all three. Also, Yong may be single and an orphan, but the army was the family he'd never had. And as strict as he may have been, he did see his recruits as his kids, in a way.
