Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
When introducing her kin, Meizhen went out of the way to refer to them fully; Bai Xia, Bai Lao. Other white serpent Bai didn't do this.
[snip]
"What." Lao Keung said.

"What." Bai Meizhen agreed, glaring at Liling's back.
Xiao Fen made a sound not unlike a furiously burning fuse.

"I do not even know where to begin," Xia Anxi muttered.
Meizhen doing her part to unify the Bai via naming them all as part of one clan, lumping everyone together rather than splitting them by caste. Considering the speculation on Bai Lao Keung's disagreements on the disadvantages his castes faces under the current system, Meizhen seems to be working on gaining his loyalty by assuaging his concerns he'll be locked out of gains made by the White Serpents.

And, of course, there's the common enemy method of achieving unity. Notice how Meizhen mirrored Bai Lao Keung's reaction, thereby giving him her backing and approval, and the same bafflement expressed in all four Bai. They're all united!

Her dantian burned in Ling Qi's spiritual sight like a miniature sun, environmental qi churning, digesting into hungry crimson.
Sun Liling seems to have something similar to Ling Qi's stealth/learning/expression cultivation bonus from the Moon, but her favored activity is simply Living. That's one benefit of her spirit-blood.

However, she's also doubled down on her barbarous outer personality, abandoning even the notion that she's a Princess and not just a big stick. The dismissiveness about roads just an excuse for how the jungle is probably working in favor of the Sun, instead of fighting them, but she's probably even more offensive to Imperial sensibilities than before. Given that Sun Shao has given up on the Throne, he probably thinks that's not a loss. Perhaps this might be a good wedge issue to break the Heavenly Peaks' support for the Sun in the Civil War?

Gramps has decided, since we're all doing this imperial unity thing, he's gonna head south too, clear out our bits of the mountains!
Breaking the Cloud Tribes' Compact of the Red Noon, I see, as well as expanding the Jungle. This blocks the escape route west for the Cloud Tribes, further driving them into the arms of the existing Confederations out of desperation; expands the reach and power of the Sunflower Goddess and thus of Sun Liling; and continues to expound on the military bonifides of the Western Territories, weakening the will of the Empire to act against the Sun.

That last part is probably the most important politically, even as the growing influence of the Sunflower Goddess should worry everyone. Sun Shao already has the most powerful army of any individual province — if they're not struggling to pacify the land and can engage in military adventures, they can expand into the other provinces during the civil war. That has to be accounted for in the clans' calculations of who to support.

"...Yeah sorry, trying to figure out what I was looking at, got blocked by the princess' spirit. Who… I'm not sure if they were flirting or threatening, it was kinda both. That was a weird conversation," Sixiang muttered.
So that's how Sun Shao's hiding things. Like how the Moon hid Sima Jiao's image after he met Xin, Sun Shao has the Sunflower Goddess intercede via her fragment to protect her granddaughter.

[] Rare reagents (Begin Forgotten Elixir Quest, complete Part 1 of 4 immediately)
This is the best option, I think. The Hearts Dream Elixer is a breakthrough medicine for use to achieve the Fourth Realm; rare enough that getting them elsewhere will have to be a boon gained from a quest line. Considering that we're going to try to get Suyin to make it, I'd rather start the quest line now, since Suyin will need to do an extended experimentation phase to modify the recipe to work for her as well as under modern conditions. (And, she's getting resources poured into her by the Sect. If she's working on a breakthrough medicine that can subsequently be put to use empowering the Sect's forces, that would only make her even more valuable to the Sect. I like Suyin, and want only good things for her.)

Is it though? I find it hard to imagine that we couldn't manage to get some breakthrough drugs from the Cai.
This is something unique. We found it among the Hui lord's hoarded cache of goodies and he had an enormous variety of treasures. The Cai can help us but remember that as a clan, they're just getting started. Recall that they had to trade with the Bai just to get new arts, including arts for us? The Cai as a Ducal clan are powerful in some ways of course but they are still lacking certain resources.

For people who are thinking "god no not another quest" just because we're technically starting it now doesn't mean we have to keep going. If the Elixir option is voted for we've finished a fourth of the quest immediately. We can pick up the rest when we get closer to the end of Green realm.

yeah, feels like its implying he didn't at all exceed expectations or was even close to trying to exceed them. need way more better results gan.
I didn't really get any negative implications from it. My impression of Renxiang has been that she holds herself, and by extension her direct retainers, to an extremely high standard so meeting her expectations would be considered spectacular for anyone else. Also that she wouldn't want to overly praise or criticise in front of Meizhen's retainers, so would save a more frank assessment for a private conversation.

Sun Liling glanced away from Lu Feng, briefly meeting her gaze before her eyes swept away to the rest of Ling Qi's party, who had noticed her as well. The princess of the west had changed since Ling Qi had last seen her. Her crimson hair held a streak of vibrant green, and the sharp edged smirk she wore seemed more literal than before. The biggest change was to her spirit though. She was a sink of power. Her skin drank in the qi of sun and water in the air, the power of the earth and soil flowed into her feet, visibly so, to Ling Qi's spiritual senses. Her dantian burned in Ling Qi's spiritual sight like a miniature sun, environmental qi churning, digesting into hungry crimson.
And that's just... passive. Just standing around.

Sun Liling with her arts going might not need to dispel constructs and the like, instead just ripping the qi from them and using it to fuel her own spirit. Really quite frightening. I really agree with Sixiang on this one. Let's just avoid her at pretty much all costs. A fight with her is not going to end well.

Question, could some of her arts allow her to rip the qi right from someone else's dantian? Or would that be too close to the prohibitions against manipulating the soul? Or, if it is, do the Sun family care anymore?

Money is almost irrelevant to Ling Qi right now. What does 200 green stones do for her that isn't already possible through with the Cai have planned for us anyway? Fat no from me on this one.

[] Soil Studies (+10 bonus development rolls in fief)
I love a good passive bonus to something important. Strong chance I throw a vote this direction.

[] Rare reagents (Begin Forgotten Elixir Quest, complete Part 1 of 4 immediately)
We have SO SO SO much time before the Cyan breakthrough drug becomes anywhere near a priority. I doubt taking these reagents here would actually help LQ hit Cyan any faster in the grand scheme of things. However LQ was excited when she brought it up so narratively it might be worth voting for.

[] Insight Sharing (+1 Isolation and Ending XP)
This would likely be the most interesting to read and give Xia Lushen the most screen time potentially. Also getting concept XP makes future turn planning easier so this is favorable on two fronts. Isolation is a top three concept and while Ending is not it is part of our connection to Zeqing and Hanyi so it's worth looking at as well.

Verdict?

[] Insight Sharing (+1 Isolation and Ending XP)

I'm happiest with either of these. Drug doesn't make me unhappy, but stones would be such a waste.

[] Soil Studies (+10 bonus development rolls in fief)

I'm a fan of this, stronger rolls mean we're stacking our bonuses so things should almost self assemble :D

BUT

[] Rare reagents (Begin Forgotten Elixir Quest, complete Part 1 of 4 immediately)

This is the sort of thing that would be useful for a bunch of our peers and is the sort of thing that would be a decent family secret and that could come in handy.

I am curious over the potential to turn Sun Liling's practice of constantly absorbing environmental qi into a weakness. Could she be tricked into letting harmful effects past her normal defenses if they are disguised as normal environmental qi?

There must be some serious disadvantageous to the practice of constantly consuming environmental qi based on the fact we have not seen anyone else using such a technique despite the tremendous advantages it can be expected to provide. If this practice didn't come with some kind of huge drawback than we would have seen it before. Even if there are costs that can keep this practice out of the hands of the average cultivator, it would still be seen among the many elite cultivators who could access it thanks to their powerful family, institutional backing, or patron.

Sun Shao has secured his backline by wedding the Sunflower Goddess. He can now project power elsewhere because there's an active Sublime willing to meet any attackers while he's gone. Even the Bai have to wake Grandma Snake first

[] 200 Green Stones

Oddly enough, this is the mystery box option. Money is going to be valuable in fief managment, per Yrs in discord, but we have no clue how. As it stands we have no use for money at all.

[] Soil Studies (+10 bonus development rolls in fief)

A straight up mechanical upgrade in a system that we haven't seen. It seems promising and fits well narratively with how we expect to make money (agriculture)

[] Rare reagents (Begin Forgotten Elixir Quest, complete Part 1 of 4 immediately)

This one isn't really beginning a new quest, we actually did this already with looting Hui Peng's ring. What this does is skip an entire set of updates that would be focused on getting the materials.

[] Insight Sharing (+1 Isolation and Ending XP)

Does this really need a comment? Its a well defined reward for a system we have fully laid out for us.

I prefer the [] Rare reagents (Begin Forgotten Elixir Quest, complete Part 1 of 4 immediately) for its affect on story progression. Soil Studies seems promising too. I am... dubious of the money's value.

The big worrying thing about Sun Shao's actions is that if he is genuinely approaching Cai with the intent to be allies he's setting himself up to lose, and he's almost certainly too smart to do that.

Bai and Sun can't exist in the same alliance, and the central strength of the Bai Cai alliance is that they've got complementary forms of power. Bai has a foundation that has stood since the dawn of time but little immediately applicable strength, Cai has huge amounts of strength but has a bus factor of one and basically no library. Under this analysis the Sun comes out looking almost identical to the Cai: lots of power now, but no breadth or depth and possibly going to collapse entirely in a couple centuries if they're not careful.

So not only would Cai have to look bad by breaking any friendship with the Bai in order to properly ally with the Sun, but she'd just be getting more of what she already has rather than something which covers her own weaknesses.

[] Insight Sharing (+1 Isolation and Ending XP)

As much as I like the concept of LQ creating more exotic cultivation drugs to snort, the insight sharing sounds like it could lead to some really interesting narrative places, and we start the alchemical quest later anyway based on how Yrs phrased the option.

My thoughts on the options
[] 200 Green Stones
This is alot. For reference we are currently getting 6 GS per month from the Cai. Since we will be spending money in building our fief more money will mean less of choosing one development over another. It can also potentially be used for funding further cultivation resources.
[] Soil Studies (+10 bonus development rolls in fief)
While the stones increases the number of developments we can work on for our fief, this will help ensure that what we do work on is of a higher standard/more likely to actually succeed.
[] Rare reagents (Begin Forgotten Elixir Quest, complete Part 1 of 4 immediately)

This will have little effect on us now. However, due to the increasing rarity of higher cultivation resources this is highly useful in preventing us from plateauing as we near and enter Cyan Level. This is probably the best long term effect (if we can ignore immediate needs).
[] Insight Sharing (+1 Isolation and Ending XP)

This is a straight personal buff that has immediate effect. Considering we are establishing our fief near an active warzone this could prove very useful.

Overall I don't think there is any bad choice. I am leaning towards the money and away from the insight, but only leaning so far.

I don't think the money is as important as the other stuff as next turn is the the Auction turn.

We are gonna be selling the tapestry and all the other Hui/Weilu stuff we got from killing Hui Peng so we can expect a rather large windfall.

Honestly I expect selling the tapestry alone to be worth more than 200 GSS. It seems extremely valuable and the Meng are wealth enough. It's likely that we'll get a good sum for the other stuff as well so I think we'll probably be good on the money side of things for a while.

With that being said I'd like something harder to get so:

It will be Money or Soil for me. Basically one of the options boosting our fief building operations which are coming up in the next year.
These 200 GSS (in addtion to whatever we get from the auction) will allow us to repeatedly pick the pricier (read better) option and the open up options to support Yu Nuan. Money is king, especially when you are a common baron.
The soil studies in combination with Zhengui's ash would probably lead to an immensely productive territory. I profess I have a weakness for agricultural mountain civs.

The elixir is tempting, but Cyan is at least two years away and I kinda like the idea of gathering the materials ourselves.
The insights are probably the narrative most interesting option, however I will say no thank you to taking insights from the Bai's foremost chemical weapons expert.

Killing a white when he is far from the sunflower jungles in her home turf is probably beyond even the butcher king.

I don't think his power is tied to the jungle - Bai Fuxi ambushed him in Imperial Peaks afaik and Sun Shao killed them all still. And those were White Bai & support squad. But I wouldn't think he'd attempt an assassination by warning his target in advance about his arrival.

This might be useful, tbh all choices are pretty good at various timelines

This saves time required to find rare ingredients, and that a commodity that can be spent on other things.
