At some point, we're going to have to make decisions about whether to keep this guy around. We've seen some things about him, but I think we need to see more.

"Old things choke new things, with hungry roots and heavy leaves," Zhen said. "Without destruction comes stagnation."

"Without renewal, destruction is stagnation too," Gui said huffily.

This reminds me of the time where that stagnation spirit consumed some of Zhengui's hopes and dreams and left him motivvation-less for a while. I feel like that encounter has shifted Zhengui's perspective to be, ideologically, very strongly Anti-Stagnation. Which is something he'd likely already be anyways, considering his nature. But, it's a matter of "I've experienced how awful stagnation is. I didn't like it before, but now? Now it's personal. I'm going to dedicate myself to be the very opposite of stagnation." And for Zhengui, the very opposite of stagnation is renewal. Iff something becomes old and gets in the way, it gets burned and removed to start over, replaced with something new and better!

Of course, the nature of cultivation enhancing power differentials in society means it is probably somewhat less common than in RL.
Possibly, but not necessarily, communal cultivation could be a thing, leading for voting and convincing others to vote for you might be thing that cultivators (or cultural equivalent thereof) do to cultivate.
