This one seems like it has a higher chance of making sure scary duchess lady isn't disappointed. The other choice may be on average more interesting for Ling Qi personally, but this is an important mission, and we can't fail. We have to prioritize here.

What exactly do we get out of knowing about their current their homes? We may get some more info on Koliada and their environment but it doesn't sound very relevant for bringing that up ourselves vs getting to know what they were like as a people.

Like sure their home is a harsh winter wonderland but that ain't exactly news to us, we get to know what they were like personally with the second choice since the blade will remember the blades they self mutilated on the mountain's they called home before packing up and heading south.

Even though their changed we can see what their relationship with the Empire and perhaps the Weilu was like, if it was antagonistic or more cordial and lean into what they like/respect as a people.

I would say the problem is that whatever they were when they left, they might not be anymore.

But a society is shaped by its environment.

...I'd say that's more along the lines of the ruling clan's primary spirit alliances aligning with the province ecology tho

He very well might. He's getting continuous one-on-one direct training by what I'm guessing is the equivalent of an Elder. And as a beast he's certainly not at the soft cultivation cap of his species, so he'll be prone to intense gainz.
There's also whether he could wrangle a one-on-one. That's what it effectively was last time, after all.

Isn't this just a matter of stretching the definition of people? It's not like the spirits can't change their environments, like a tree spirit creating more trees or a river snake spirit making sure there would be more rivers.

It's not like the various spirits themselves are limited or unthinking, and according to Yao the Fisher legend we do have an example of a spirit artificially rearing humans to suit themselves.

His core problem is that he's basically an unbloodied whelp atm. His mom's doing her best to get him into shape so he won't be as much of an embarrassment but until and unless he faces true adversary of the kind LQ faces regularly, he's gonna lose to Zhengui alone, let alone LQ.

The problem I see is that we can already learn from the lands of ice by talking to them, on the other hand, the first contact is very important and knowing if they have already had relations (positive or negative) with the empire, would give us information on how we should approach them...
