Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Again, that assumes a basic level of assistance having been agreed to. Which I'm disagreeing with.
This is a diplomatic meeting, to not provide aid when an outsider attacks the meeting, even if they are targeting individuals is really only acceptable when there exists some kind of open hostility between groups, since anything less calls into question the very idea of having meetings in the first place. And since it's clear from the scene that the Shishigui are here on behest of one of the cloud tribes, it would require open hostility between the clan that brought the dwellers, and the Twelve Star confederacy, and that's not present in the dialog.

The Cyan and his 12 stars friends plan on fighting with the Empire in the near future anyways, and represents a major threat to Ling Qi and friendly forces. Plus, they really want the stone. They gotta get fucked up.

Shishigui however holds the stone right now and can move it with ease. So they also gotta get fucked up.

I'm fine with any of the above options for Ling Qi. Securing the secondary objective will be good, if possible. Otherwise, fighting alongside CRX as her left hand will be good too; its what they came here to do.

You have yet to prove they are aligned
I'm not trying to?

I'm saying that gambling that they aren't has no basis and is a terrible risk to take because the possibility that they are is just too great.

I've established my perspective, and you're not really undermining my points so...?

Again, that assumes a basic level of assistance having been agreed to. Which I'm disagreeing with.
And theres no reason for you to.

But even setting that aside, you can't really deny the risk that I've established.

And so long as that risk remains, your position is ludicrously dangerous

Yeah. Ganking/team fight tactics 101: focus fire on priority targets in order to eliminate them and reduce what the enemy can do to you.
Only if your all-in is guaranteed to work.

Which regardless of anything else, I've established is distinctly not the case

Except that if he can shield the shishigui then he can shield himself, so there's no difference there.

Unless your argument is that allowing him to potentially focus on defending one place could leave us worse off than tying him up with Guan Zhi's attack and leaving the Shishigui open to Renxiang's?

Sure there is.

There's like

Two or three times as many greens hed need to burn qi protecting as compared to the Shishigui group

We know from Ling Qis own techniques that that stuff gets expensive the wider you spread your defense arts to cover

If it's even possible for that kind of coverage in the first place

Well, you haven't undermined my points either. I have seen no reason to assume that the cyan can protect others. Nor I have I seen any reason to assume that he would be willing to. I would in fact argue that plan breach is the safest plan out of all plans suggested because it tries to get as much damage as possible onto a target.

"I think so," Ling Qi said. She had been preparing for such missions for awhile now. She smiled wistfully. "I am the wind thief after all."

Cai Renxiang raised an eyebrow, as if asking for an explanation. Ling Qi didn't give one. The heiress shook her head. "...I suppose it is enough that you are confident."

"Lady Cai's belief in this one is an honor," Ling Qi said dryly.

"Failure is forbidden," the heiress bore an unamused expression. "Do not betray my confidence."

Ling Qi hummed, not worried by the ominous words. She could feel the thread of emotion weaving through that mechanical statement. Hidden from the other disciples warming up for their part in the assault. "Naturally, am I not your left hand?"

"Indeed," Cai Renxiang said, perfectly serious. "I look forward to your success."

"And I look forward to not being on the business end of my Lady's techniques for once," Ling Qi said lightly.

Cai Renxiang smiled faintly, turning away without a word.
I like how from an external perspective its looks quite formal but internally it's back and forth teasing.
It is nice to see Renxiang slowly lighten up with Ling Qi.

I'm not trying to, really

I'm saying that in the absence of the certainty in your argument, you're advocating an unacceptable risk

You could be right

Or I could be right

But if I'm right shit goes Really badly if we go with your preferred option

Whereas if you're right and my preferred course of action wins chances are we lose out on a golden ending to this whole affair...which I dont really see as plausible for reasons I've already laid out

The risks of failure from your approach are pretty genuinely awful, whereas the risks from my approach are just suboptimal.

"What are defensive Arts again?"

"You mean like TRF and SNR?"

"Never heard of em"

War is about risk. You have said nothing nor shown nothing that puts this plan above the risks of other plans.

I don't like the idea of futzing around with the Starstone. We have no idea if we can actually transport it, only guesswork. Meanwhile, the thing will be difficult to move if the Shisigui earthbender gets wiped out, and if the enemy tries to grab it and run it'll slow them down and make them vulnerable, both to attack from the rear and our perimeter guards.

I'd much rather eliminate enemies, we can grab the starstone after we wipe people out.

"Let's leave the potentially hostile Cyan with something like over a dozen backup dancers ready to.support them to respond to our own forces with initiative and impunity"

That you don't think that's a serious risk means you've got an awful.lot of confidence in Guan zhi, I guess?

Why wouldn't I? We've already seen her hold out against a cyan with plenty of green support.

Fundamentally I disagree with your idea of using an alpha strike to "tie up" an enemy force. An alpha strike is meant to destroy a target. Not doing that leaves two foes with unknown damage. I would rather try and get the enemy down to one undamaged force.

The mission given to LQ is to kill/capture everything within the area of operation, and seeing as two of the groups wants the Starstone... at a minimum securing it will force them to stick around longer, or preferably running off with it in a very visible manner should keep them within the area of operation longer. Furthermore if Ling Qi managed to run off with the Starstone it should split up the formations of our enemies, and this should hopefully lessen their ability to mitigate damage as a group meaning they're taking more damage as individual cultivators, which makes them significantly easier to take down for our reinforcements who are notably lower cultivation level than our opponents meaning they need to work together.

Besides if Hany/LQ can pull a duet to convert* all the moisture in the air from the thunder storm into enough snow for Zhengui to sled down... the fact that we're running off with what the cloud nomads view of a religious item means that we can get an epic battle of the bards due to the other hard being noticeably pissed. For extra credit doing a visibly ice lady thing has a slight chance of making the faction associated with them hang back if they culturally consider kinship important, and well punching an Xuanwu plus Battle of the Bards sized hole through the front line of the enemy should give an opening for the reinforcements to more easily get into the battle proper allowing them to an opportunity to show off to CRX, which is likely our win condition to force them to get out.

Admittedly the more likely outcome is Ling Qi just entrenches around the Starstone as her practice with Wang is well suited for at least keeping the CN away from their target, but the callback to Hanyi talking about how fun sledding is would be hilarious to read. :V

*Turning the opposition's ritual to your own ends, and pulling double duty by weakening whatever it is designed to do is totally the Grinning Moon way to do things.

I agree with @Katreus that attacking the lower realm forces on the rim isn't ideal. Besides probably dumping the small chance of the third faction just leaving, it's tactically questionable.

The yellows are spread out among the entire circumference of the caldera. This makes striking a decisive blow against them super difficult. Ling Qi's attacks absolutely trump a Yellow's defences, but they don't take effect all that quickly. Trying to wipe out the Yellows doesn't even really take advantage of Ling Qi's mobility, because she'll be restricted by the pace of her slow-acting attacks. And things like her Domain isolation effect is a) slow and b) only affects a small number of targets; it's more suitable for targeting commanders than grunts.

There's also the fact our own Green allies are going to be charging over one of the edges of the caldera soon. In total, it just doesn't seem a strongly impactful use of Ling Qi's time.

I'm not sure anyone backing the plan "grab aggro from as many targets as possible without assuring a kill on any of them" should be talking about confidence.
???

That's the point of artillery.

Killing the chaff. In the absence of being able to block the attacks in their entirety, masses of chaff on both sides will either be eliminated or badly drained of Qi from protecting one another from the attacks

In the case of the Cyan Barbarian, burning through energy to defend their minions from.Guan Zhis own strike should prove far more ruinous to their reserves than it was for us to block Ji Rongs final attack.

Thatll tip things significantly in our favor.

The more that needs to be defended, the more qi gets spent in the defense, and that makes the resulting melee far more advantageous towards us.

You can't guarantee deaths, so burning reserves and offing chaff in the collateral damage to even the numbers out is ideal for seizing the advantage

Otherwise there's a very real.chance of us having to.fight something like 20 enemy third realms supporting that Cyan barbarian

Those greens were rather distracted dealing with Ling Qi and Ji Rong

And when more showed up Guan Zhi proceeded to bail with the two of them, which lead to that Dream sequence we all got to enjoy
We had three greens chase us. That was hardly the full extent of the greens in that fort.

Pretty sure she battled that cyan and all the greens, yellows, and reds in that fort for one or two minutes while we escaped. Interesting that that is the length of time that reinforcements are expected to arrive in this time as well.

Moon Sempai was fighting the dancers I believe, so not all the greens. The Cyan and the Houndmaster and maybe a few other greens?

She was retreating as well after the first two exchanges with that Cyan, so I genuinely dont see why you think her sticking around to fight to the death while outnumbered again is a good idea.

Especially when we dont know how the two Cyans stack up against one another

Again

You're gambling without any real basis
