Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

[X] You'll tell her that she just got a poor draw. She needs to stick this out, and she can find a sensei that's right for her. Special Jonin are always looking for new talent to groom and you know Yui can get an apprenticeship somewhere!
-[X] And there's nothing wrong with specialization. Gai-sensei has been quadrupling down on Taijutsu since he was in the academy, and if nothing else his ability as a combat ninja is beyond question.

Nice to see this quest back. Too bad the whining about Katsuragi not putting points where I want them to go actively participating and supporting a quest with content they took time to make has also returned.

Anyway.

-[X] There's nothing wrong with specialization, but if she does want to shore up other areas that's a good idea too. She should keep looking for other opportunities, because they are out there, while trying to improve and make herself the best candidate she can. The key is not to give up.
[X] You'll tell her that there are other ways to be a shinobi even if she's failed the genin squad exam. She can still show her skills! Maybe she could be a med-nin, or join the corps! She's not out of options by any means.

you know i feel a the following quote should be used in the next chapter

"I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

I think the quote is attributed to Bruce Lee but not too sure.

Where have I seen this quote last... Oh yeah, now I remember :p
The True Master
Fear not the man who has practiced a thousand techniques once. Fear the man who has practiced a single technique a thousand times.
Unlock Condition: Level any one technique to 'Master'.
Reward: Technique Evolution unlocked!
Status: UNLOCKED

I don't like comparison in "nothing wrong with specialization" subvote, because taijutsu is much broader than substitution. She didn't specialize in something equivalent to taijutsu, she mastered something equivalent to hip throw and that was exactly the problem pointed by her sensei.

A part of me just knows this is Ren's fault...somehow.

I...Live! Flesh and blood and bone! I am alive! Ha ha! I swore I would scratch and crawl my back into the world of the living...and I have done it!

She doesn't only work with substitution, she uses it as a base for being sneaky.
She's fresh from the academy, what other stealth techniques could she have learned without a clan? Realistically, none. Yet her sensei wanted to see more. It's the job of a jonin sensei to expand their genin's repertoire, not the academy instructors'.

To be fair, jonin in this quest are a BIG DEAL.

They only take the best of the best, the most promising, in their teams (and only if they feel like it!), and every single one of their students is guaranteed to reach at least special jounin level, if not outright jonin (unless they die of course).

They're the elite of the village, the top 1% (if not top 0.1%)

Also the team they take becomes pretty much a second family to them, and while they're teaching they can't take any B to S rank missions.

Yui was both unlucky (She had REN in her team!) and, yes, a bit too focused on her one jutsu.

And so she lost her (first) chance to a big name sensei.

She's still a ninja though! Worst case scenario, she'll have to climb through the genin corps while trying to get a special jounin's or an experienced chunin's attention.

She's still friends with some very talented genin and can probably get a few tips and lessons from our teachers if we ask nicely once they get to know, trust and like us.

And if she can impress Asuma, Kurenai or whoever is team 8's sensei, they can certainly put a good word for her.

Short version: she was unlucky, but she has options! This is just a small setback

Also got to consider that it is only her out of her close friends that didn't make it so..... Got to hurt her even more. She's still a kid with all that entails. A mature kid is still a kid. Luckily she got options and friends to help her. :)

I actually wonder if being hyperspecialized was the real reason rather than failing the test on a different basis and then blown off with a fake reason. Like, the Jounins aren't looking for people with super high skills so much as people with potential to grow anyways.
They're testing on psychological traits.

Like, failing the canon Bell Test and then instead of censuring them for lack of teamwork, Kakashi tells them they are too weak(because seriously, he's a Jounin, the only reason they can even beat his shadow clone is that he let them), because he's going to escalate until they learn teamwork.
Or the first part of our test, planning a party. If we had lone wolfed a perfect party? Odds are good she'd have nitpicked it to failing because thats just as far as a Genin could have prepared, and we'd have left it thinking she's an unreasonable ****. And if we had individually come up with a shitty party, we'd have failed because the party was a shambles. If we had cooperated and made a shitty party, she'd probably have passed it.

Or I suppose Ino-Shika-Cho getting a free pass because politics.
