Rotten Luck
Omake: Rotten Luck

Tormod watched the chronometer tick up, second by second, with the grim certainty of a condemned man.

He was not alone. Valria sat next to him, watching the chronometer with the same grim certainty. Roommate Sarah lounged on the couch, checking over her ordinance. Danaan stood off to the side, idly palming then sheathing a knife. Jessica floated nervously overhead. And of course, there were the ever present Governer's Own.

The tension in the room had been growing since the morning and yet nothing happened as the clock ticked ever upward. There hadn't even been a spider attack since they had convened to watch the ticking stopwatch.

"Maybe the pie eating contest counted," Danaan started. He fell silent under Tormod and Valria's glare. "Yeah, I know, I'm sorry. I just-"

Tormod smiled sadly a shook his head. He understood. Valria accepted it. Both turned back to the chronometer.

It showed 31532395
It showed 31532396
It showed 31532397
It showed 31532398
It showed 31532399

Red warning sigils flashed on their HUDs.

Warning: Abomination Daemonic Incursion Predicted! Polar Emergence ETA: 1 hour

The last number immediately began to tick down.
Valria hit the stop switch. The chronometer halted on 31532402.

Tormod began to laugh. It was not the laugh of a happy man.

The first three months had been fine. He had enjoyed the peace and quite, had even been able to relax a little.

During the fourth and fifth months he had begun to worry. He wasn't used to such a long stretch without some minor incident. It was true that he had gone years between major incidents in the past, but there hadn't been anything. Not a coin landing on edge and requiring him to adjudicate a psyker karoake match, not a single civilian tripping and requiring some death defying stunt to save them. Nothing.

Valria tried to calm him down, tried to convince him that his decision to avoid the madness was a contributing factor.

By the sixth month Valria started to share his concerns. Her personal luck might not be as bad as his, but such a stretch of uninterrupted normalcy was unnatural to her as well.

The seventh, eighth and ninth months were characterized by a sort of manic tension as the pair and their friends found themselves waiting, waiting, for the pin to drop. It was during this time that they engineered the pie eating contest. It had been a wonderful bit of absurdity, but noone, not even Danaan, really believed it had worked.

In the tenth, eleventh and twelfth months a grim acceptance had settled in. They knew when it would come.

And so they had gathered this morning, in this room, to watch the clock they had started at the end of their last adventure. The only real question had been whether it would hit when the count hit one year exactly, or if it would wait for one of them to be foolish enough to breath a sigh of relief.

Looking at the clock, showing one year minus an hour, with alarms blaring and emergency sirens beginning to wail, they knew.

@Durin

I still think we should push forward the Astartes. They are the fastest to replace super elite, and could have a big impact on thinning the numbers of the enemy here. The knights are going to be slower to replace.

Yes there's value in reserves, but by making a bigger impact early, more of our other forces will be around to fight the enemy later. Plus it's really our heroes that need to survive in good condition to face the exalted. Astartes just aren't significant against a first circle.

Just FYI, your votes are messing up the tally, and making it seem as if everyone voting for Plan Incursion A supports using an Eldar favour, which they don't. You should switch to Plan Incursion B instead if you want to have an Eldar favour.
I suspect that's actually their point in doing so.

Compared to the other plans I'm pushing forward the Astartes to 2 because they're replaceable and I want them to have a major impact. Nulls I push forward to 3 because they're very good against demons but far less replaceable than Astartes. Helguard putting back to 2 because I feel like the Helltroopers and PDF forming the front line while Helguard plug holes is their natural use, plus the Helltrooper and PDF has been expanded already while the Helguard hasn't, so they can't absorb the losses nearly as well.

Really iffy on the major favor since we'd be getting less than a minor favor worth of forces. Hopefully it only costs us a minor though.

Probably too late to start a new plan, but really wanted to move the super elites forward.

Yeah, I'll add my voice to putting Helguard on higher priority for a bit @Shard . It makes sense to use them fully if you spend Major favor and get yourself a great Helguard replacement in the face of Wrath Hosts, but otherwise, I'd keep them in reserve until next updates.

[X] Plan Incursion D

My only complaint is the possibility of spending a minor favor instead of a major. Just use the dang major. Not as good as we hoped but it is still a very, very powerful host that will lay waste to everything below 3rd sphere, decimate 2nd and 3rd and inconvenience 1st.

[X] Plan Incursion D

Wow, didn't realize it'd mess up the votecounter that bad. Good to know for the future.

here is a post I put down yesterday for the reasons I think we should use the major. Please go read it.

[X] Plan Incursion B

I would point out additionally, as I said in the quote above, that durin has stated that if the eldar get here too late to help, they will stick around to help "clean up" and protect us while our forces recover.

This also leaves the possablity that the eldar will send more forces for a major, just most will not get here for the battle itself and will instead get here to help protect us while our forces recover. But even if they don't, we still have all of those reasons above for why even a reduced-payoff major favor in this case is STILL worth it. I have left a question for durin as to the possablity of this.

not sure which vote-type this quest uses.
also, seems like enough people have switched their votes that it doesn't much matter that it got screwed up.

Addendum to Witch Burning
Addendum to Witch Burning

You admit to regret a bunch of things in your life. Most recently, you regret asking for a cup so late.

The data-slates are lying on your desk, various reports and forms flashing on their surface. Drops of coffee dotting their surface. It was really not a good moment to hear the news.

Abomination is coming. In less than an hour the skies will turn into some nightmarish shade of gold, and the spawn of chaos will flood the cities. Amongst them? Salem. The city you were responsible for expanding, which you failed to fully equip in time.

You take one of the slates, and switch to a relevant section. Yes. You can see the streets right now, demons bearing down on them. Not a single Void Shield to halt them, not a single round of heave fire breaking through their awful screams.

A patient falling into piss-filled sewers while suffering from immunodeficiency, as sever worms are wriggling into his flesh. Right, just like that scarless moron from PDF. And this time, it'll be least partially your fault. You furrow your brow, wondering about plugging some of those holes with extra artillery...

Your musings are interrupted by a Blink Spider being flung into your office, a knife sticking out of it's abdomen. Before you get the chance to draw your pistol, it's already littered with holes. A moment later, you see your assistant entering the room, panting with exertion. Damn things seem to really like her, considering that this is fourth time this week.

"Mr Gros! We have orders from the Governor!" She said with rather strained voice, trying to maintain professional calm she's supposed to show. You won't blame her for that, considering the situation at hand. You yourself started puking quite hard when Pink Skies hit, and air is already tense... you may have to give her a paper bag for this.

"He's quick as always. What is it, half an hour since the news came?" You chuckle at Big Man's speed. There were moments you had to get your own assistant, just to keep up with him. "Alright, give it here." You ignore the spider guts and minor crack on the slate. At least she got to you in one piece, unlike your last assistant, bless his soul.

You skim through the orders. Simple stuff- take designated transport, move to this place, take command of those troops. Guess there's more to come, but every minute counts. Transport is already waiting, you guess. Even so, you can't help but worry about the hive... but there's something you need to do before all that.

"First time, eh?" You grin at the frightened girl, putting a hand on her shoulder. You can see her shaking, even if she tries to hide it. "Think about all the bragging rights you'll get after surviving it. Got to tell you- it always feels great to see foreigner's face when I tell them about the incursions I've been through." She smiles an uneasy smile. You hope you'll see her after all of this. You have yet to properly taste the coffee she makes.

Both of you move through the office. Everyone is running, shouting or trying to save the work they have to drop in a hurry. A little taste of natural disorder you'll face on the battlefied. You keep wondering about the triage the poor soul at Salem has to perform. There are a number of streets they can safely abandon, since they sit in middle of finished sections...

"Susan, give a query to the the high command. I want to get in touch with Salem's commander." There isn't much you can help with, especially with Rotbart hammering out the details as you speak. Still, you are pretty sure that right now, nobody on Avernus knows this city better than you do.

You may not be there for the operation, but it's still your patient, dammit!

Isaac Gros- our head of Administratum, designer of unfinished Salem's defenses and former Head of the Department of Health.
Rotbart is the military genius. Isaac just wants to give an addendum, accounting for unfinished details.

[X] Plan Incursion A

There is a lot of overestimation of the enemy, especially because there are all the clues it is underestimating us.
There's no overestimation. Look at what happens when an Incursion doesn't target us. Now imagine what happens when we are targeted and an Exalted is gunning for one target.

We had every sign an Incursion was about to come and failed to prepare adequately. If we did maybe we possibly wouldn't have to spend the favor. Let's not double down on past failings and instead use our lifeline to avoid catastrophic damage.

um.....no? in the last invasions we never had to deal with a exalted greater deamon, the first-circle will be headed towards Dis. That guy ALONE can smash entire hives, armys, defenses and all.

if we are LUCKY, we can take it down with HEAVY losses to our army and heros. We REALLY need Avernus-wildlife to take care of the thing for us.

For the Emperor!
For the Emperor!

He was failing. He!

Jerahmeel the Exultation of GOD!

He could not fail. And so, he blocked the strike from the cursed lizard as yet another of his worthless servants fell, as he set forth a blast of holy flame to scourer these infidels and heathens from his sight like the wretches they were, but they simply blocked, dodeged away or worse cut his power in twain!

The worst part was that he could see it, he could see the blasphemer, the avatar of sin staring at him with its baleful eyes and monstrous aura. He had run the wretch from his hole and broken it forth into the pale light of his God, but then at the last moment that damned abomination had dragged him away while the lizard and the Oakenhearts engaged him. It was driving him insane, he could feel the whispers that clung to the abomination's being the false blessing of one touched by the Imprisoner of the Truth, clashing with the commands of his lord to kill, to burn to obliterate the IMPURITY!

Rearing back spitting his hatred he caught the next stab from the filthy xenos and threw it back, his wings rearing back into the air as he prepared to discharge his holy duty as the saints of Old always had, casting his prayers forth to the heavens as he did so, so that he might be martyred in the service of his God.

As a trillion guardsmen did for twelve thousand years across the Imperium, as did a billion space marines in the darkness, a million priests in their incense filled cathedrals, light years away from battle so too did he scream the ancient battle cry of the Imperium as it marched towards its doom, unthinking and unquestioning, violating its very foundational principles, sent to his death by a cruel unfeeling monster and doing so utterly willingly.

"FOR THE EMPEROR!"

Oh shit guys, they've got the Imperium's secret button of doom. Suicidal charges!

Yeah this one's too short, but I can't think of much else to say.

Yes, I've red what happened in the others invasions. But this isn't a normal invasion and, considering their best scenario, this invasion is going to be a lot weaker than the others. It is only because we are the main target that this is going to be a bigger deal than the others. Also, our troops base roll has got at least a +50 from the last battle we fought.

I don't see how your concluding that this invasion is weaker.

and even if it is, that exaulted ALONE is enough reason for us to need help because we don't have anything that can deal with that monster that won't hurt us for centrys. We could end up needing to throw our entire set of hero-units at the thing and end up losing HALF of them.

our armys will do about as much as what they did with headcrusha.
