Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

Did I miss something in the omakes or story? Why are people acting like Mariko, a child petulantly angry at us, is a psychopath? It's surreal to see people get so upset over and invested in a children's feud.

[x] You may not like one of them, but you have a team now. You should make the best of it. Go find Kiba and Mariko, and have lunch.

I think ya'll are making a mountain out of a molehill. Let's give it a bit, see how the team shakes out.

"Team Seven: Uchiha Sasuke, Hyuuga Hinata, Uzumaki Naruto!

Looks like Ves is a shipper for Hinata x Naruto

"Team Eleven: Satomura Daisuke, Yokota Mariko, Inuzuka Kiba! Your instructor is Yuuhi Kurenai!

AHAHAHAHAHAHA! God, we knew this was coming! Hell, I think someone mentioned it before!

[X] There must be some mistake. Go talk to Iruka-sensei now, and try and change his mind! He's always listened to you in the past before. This time will be no different.

I think we might have an half-decent shot of convincing Iruka since, as people are apparently forgetting, WE HAVE A PERK THAT EXPLICITLY SAYS TEACHERS WILL GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO HELP US.

I disagree with going after Ino because it's prioritizing her feelings over Dai's. He should be the most upset right now and not her.

Also, if we do stick with this team, I'll feel incredibly bad for Kiba. He's stuck with 3 Genjutsu freaks. Poor kid's gonna be traumatized from all the Genjutsu to the point that he'll be instinctively shouting, "Kai!"

All of that pointed to two genjutsu specialists so of course put them on a team with one of the best if not the best Jounin genjutsu specialists.

Ahhh, just think of Mariko's inferiority complex when she realizes we're infinitely better at the one thing she takes pride in.

It'll be great.

Ours feels like a team meant to fail.

Of course, Insane difficulty, remember? Time to die horribly.

eeeeeeeeeee

WE GET TO TEACH AKAMARU KENJUTSU IN HONOR OF BEST GIRL, SIF!

I love this team so much

Thank you, Based Ves-kage!

Glad to see someone's looking at the positives.

Yes we can. There's no need for Daisuke to do anything. Remember we never had to become a ninja or even graduate, and we have an achievement for failing the exam as well. Failure in this quest isn't a game over. Hell, it's debatable if even death is a game over.

Inoichi kinda hates us, so I don't think that's a good route.

Well then, I'm interested on how you think we can get Mariko swapped since teams are locked in upon Jounin acceptance unless there's a death in the team and I'm also interested on how you think we can just get to Chunin easily. After all, you can win the Exams, but it doesn't mean you automatically make Chunin.

I very much doubt that teams are locked permanently. If a team doesn't start working well within three to six months, I suspect that there are mechanisms by which transfers can be made - keeping a dysfunctional team together would not make sense, and would endanger the lives of the team. It's just likely this never came up in canon because there was no need for it.

Her best in that situation was literally her worst!

My god, you actually are literally incapable of understanding context and basic tactics.

Anything she did was going to have the same results Mate. Thats my point. It would end up doing nothing, and then with her genjutsued. Anything. I got the context, genjutsu against a genjutsu master, stupid, duh, poor tactics, blablabla, it doesn't matter, at all, and that's it, the end, you are calling the stupid card over and over, when it is irrelevant in the most litteral way possible.

She tries taijustu against him, he predicts her, cuts her of and genjutsus her. End.

She tries shurikenjutsu against him, he predicts her, dodges or blocks it, points at her and genjutsus her. End.

She tries ninjutsu against him, he predicts her, it hits an illusion, cause she is already genjutsued. End.

She tries genjutsu against him, he predicts it, reverts the genjutsu and she is genjutsued. End.

She does nothing at all, he looks at her, genjutsued. End.

She runs, he either lets her or not, Asuma is genjutsued, she might be genjutsued anyway and be doing nothing at all. End.

If she's willing to flat-out attack us in class, then clearly she either doesn't care about her self interests, is not thinking about the consequences of her actions(Which Iruka didn't help with), or her only/overriding self-interest is to get rid of/attack Daisuke. I'm not sure where you're getting the idea Mariko is sane.
I'm not sure where you're getting this idea she isn't sane. She didn't randomly ramp up to attack. Daisuke started the escalation.

Honestly her behaviour is more than a little crazy. A feud between children does not linger for 6 years. It takes a week maybe a little longer and then something more exciting or important happened. To take a simple disagreement and make it into a major thing, like she did by trying to ostracize us and Ino , shows an amount of malicousness that is not normal. To make this into an even bigger thing by trying to sabotage the grade of another student while the teacher is present raises even more warning flags...

Jeez, I'd expect this level of thread meltdown for Ino's death or something (everything was on fireeeee and things are calmed down already nvm I guess we're fine now right?). I mean apparently we spent most of the time as an 'uneasy peace' with Mariko, we have no idea why she doesn't really like us. We don't like her because she doesn't like us for some nebulous reason and things have just gotten worse over the last year or so.

I do still have no idea why our teacher did nothing when she interrupted us though and yelled at us so clearly something more must be going on right? Maybe Mariko has an evil twin who's possessing her...?

...Clearly, you didn't fully read what I said. I said that Daisuke can't be seen as trying to deliberately fail after just becoming ROTY. There's a bunch of reasons why(Which you'd know if you read all the comments in the thread rather than cherry pick), but Daisuke can't be seen as deliberately failing.

I very much doubt that teams are locked permanently. I'd say there was need for it considering how fucked up Team 7 was. It was only thanks to Sasuke leaving that we effectively got the same thing.

I'm not sure where you're getting this idea she isn't sane. She didn't randomly ramp up to attack. Daisuke started the escalation.

*Blinks in shock* No. No he didn't. Where did you get that idea from? This all started from the moment we sat down with our friend Ino for lunch and Mariko immediately went antagonistic towards us and eventually we moved away from her and Ino followed which then put Ino on Mariko's shitlist. We didn't do jackshit besides sit with our friend while Mariko, from that moment on, was deliberately antagonistic to us our entire fucking school life. And then when Iruka said that the class should treat us with the same respect that they would give him for our presentation, Mariko was a deliberate disrespectful little shit and then after when we essentially called her out for it and acted as Iruka would've, she escalated into near-attacking us with a jutsu! I don't get where you think we escalated things!

[] You may not like one of them, but you have a team now. You should make the best of it. Go find Kiba and Mariko, and have lunch.

I'm fine with this or Ino. Both have good reasons, but different focus.

I'm hyped as hell for this team. With how much Vesvius and thread commentary could make people hate Mariko through just a few scene snippets, I'm ready to see how Mariko, Kiba, and Kurenai fare in the next few dozen updates. (And Akamaru!)

Edit: Actually, I'll go with Ino. I think that'll be more interesting story update to read. At the potential cost of better team relations. But I'm fine with that for now.

Wow people are really getting upset about Mariko.
I really don't think it's going to be that bad guys, we just need to work through things.

Remember Naruto has to deal with Sasuki, who actually tried to kill him for real.
We have damn high social stats, so if we can't fix this then what are they even for?

It's not like Mariko is a major threat, we just need to let her release some of that rage.... the squirrels maybe?
If you guys are still worried? Then just put some xp into detecting poison or something. It's not like she can take us in a fair fight

I CALLED IT! I knew Mariko would be in Dai's team. As soon as people started talking about how much they disliked her this was fated to happen. Time to start to know her, I guess. Right now Daisuke barely knows anything about Mariko, other that she's Ino's family and she doesn't like him. Got to correct that. Plus, her and Daisuke will get along eventually. For sure... Maybe... Probably not.

[X] You may not like one of them, but you have a team now. You should make the best of it. Go find Kiba and Mariko, and have lunch.

I just made another omake so I'll drop it here rather than making a new post. It's a continuation of my last omake about the assassin and it follows Danzo's perspective.

Rule #25 of the Leaf's Ninja Code

A shinobi must never show their tears. A shinobi must never reveal their emotions. To reveal emotion is to display weakness. A shinobi must never show any weakness.

In recent years, your Village has known peace, and certain ninja had let this dull their blades. Hatake Kakashi, a man who had once been the most promising of ninja, who had risen to the rank of Jonin as a mere teenager of 13 had been content to stagnate, to rest in his accomplishments. Konoha no longer ignited fear in the heart of their rivals. Legends like Namikaze Minato, the Sannin, Hatake Sakumo no longer filled the ranks of Konoha shinobi.

Nowadays, their place was filled by others who hold the potential to equal them, but have not yet attained the right to stand side by side with these larger than life figures. Maito Gai had mastered the use of the Eight Gates and was revered as the Leaf's premier Taijutsu expert. Were he to unleash the Eight Gates, none would stand in his way. Hatake Kakashi, despite never fulfilling his potential, still stoked caution in the hearts of the Leaf's rivals. Recently, a new Jonin had arrived. Yuuhi Kurenai, a Genjutsu prodigy unrivalled within the village.

The shinobi of the Leaf had not yet recovered from the Third Shinobi War or the Kyubi Attack, but it would not be long until then. Another year and another 84 graduates from the Ninja Academy. Promising youngsters graduated and amongst this year's crop, three stood out.

"Your suggestion, Danzo?"

You look back to your old friend. He has grown old. Wrinkles adorn his face and he is tired. Thirteen years ago, he was forced to take upon the Hat again unexpectedly after his Successor died to save the Village. The Uchiha Massacre had aged him even further.

"Do you truly care for my suggestions, old friend?"

In the last five years, never has he followed one of your suggestions for team placements. You do not truly know why you are still here. Nevertheless, you release a sigh upon receiving after a beat of silence when the Hokage and the other two Advisors wait for your reply.

"Uchiha Sasuke, Satomura Daisuke and Yamanaka Ino under Hatake Kakashi." Eyebrows are furrowed and doubtful looks are directed at you. Still, you persist.

"I see no reason to persist with this notion of balancing our Genin teams. Should we not pair our brightest talents together, to allow them to grow at their own pace, rather than holding them back with those beneath them?" Honestly, pairing the Yamanaka heiress, with Nara Shikamaru? A slacker who ranked second to last would only force their teacher to focus his attention on him rather than the talented kunoichi.

"Yamanaka and Satomura are close friends, if Umino's reports are to be believed. Furthermore, Satomura is one of the few who Uchiha Sasuke respects and does not look down upon. Fostering the three of them in a team together would allow them to progress quickly to higher ranks and take part in this year's Chuunin Exams."

"Umino Iruka wishes to group Satomura with Inuzuka Kiba and Hyuuga Hinata. To be frank, I am willing to follow his recommendation."

You chafe under your Hokage's words. To place one of your most promising ninja with a heiress who is looked down upon within her own clan. The girl had yet to master the basics of the Gentle Fist and was according to reports, a shy wallflower more suited to a civilian life than that of a shinobi.

"To place Satomura with such teammates is to stifle his development. He must grow strong before the Land of Iron grows bold once more."

You rub your fingers against the grooves of your cane, allowing yourself some time to control your temper. Always, Sarutobi persists in grouping promising students with those who will hold them back. You do not shy away from his disbelieving stare.

"The Land of Iron would not be so bold to incur in our wrath again. It was not long ago that they defied us. To do so again would invite greater repercussions than merely a stern warning. They surely do not wish war upon us." Homura asserts. He lifts his bowl of tea and takes a sip, meeting your gaze, waiting. He knows you too well, aware that you mustn't have brought up the issue if you thought otherwise.

"Whenever you live, there will always be war. Peace is merely an illusion, a brief lull in hostilities, a time for each country to recover from their losses and prepare for the next conflict." This is an opinion you've made clear before, but is not shared by your leader.

"I received a report this morning. One of my agents was approached regarding the boy and offered five million if the boy met an unsuspicious death. A paltry sum to be sure, which leads me to believe this offer was not made by the Land's ruler or any lord of significant stature. However, it is still a matter that merits caution. The boy must be taught properly before the Land of Iron's more significant nobles take an interest in him once again."

You finish your delivery with a sharp clack of your cane hitting the floor to punctuate the utter belief you possess in your words. A thoughtful silence fills the room where none of the room's occupants dare meet each your eyes. Sarutobi releases a sigh and meets your gaze.

"You know nothing further about the persons behind this?" He enquires. You slowly shake your head and wait.

"I shall take your words under consideration."

It is as you expected. Sarutobi will discard your opinion as he has done so many times before. You ignore the rest of the conversation regarding the team selections. You hold no interest in them if your opinions shall not be heard. You rise sharply out of your chair once the matter has been solved and bow to Sarutobi before abruptly leaving the room.

The rhythmic tapping of your cane on the wooden floorboards brings a sense of calm to your mind and you halt upon sensing an approach.

"Danzo-sama. The report, as you requested."

The Root operative bows and delivers a thin report that must hold no more than ten pages into your hands. You quickly open it up and are greeted with a drawing of a short obese man, with balding hair and a scraggy greying beard. It seems the man who wishes Satomura Daisuke's death is nothing but a minor lordling in the north of the Land of Iron. Most likely he thought the boy's demise would bring him the favour of some of the more important nobles who shared his fear regarding the boy's threat.

"Date Retsutoka, what shall I do with you?"

While Sarutobi may be reluctant to instigate conflict with another country, he is your leader. He must always be above suspicion. He is the leaves bathing in the sun while you are the roots growing in the dark. You will do what you can to protect the Leaf. Should the day come where your Village's actions come to light, you shall be the sacrificial pawn. You shall shoulder the blame and Sarutobi shall remain the Village's Professor. A dutiful, kind old Grandfather who was led astray by the Shinobi of Darkness.

That time has yet to come. Right now, you have a problem to take care of.

Never have I wanted Danzo to have more power and sway in Konoha than I do now *sobs internally*.

[X] Ino does not look happy. She needs you now. Go find her before she gets too far away.

Honestly, I don't think Kurenai will be that bad of an instructor for us. She may not be as acclaimed as the other Jonin sensei, but try to remember all the moments in Naruto that shows Jonin like Kakashi, Asuma, and co not really instructing their students or having a lack of interest in doing so, while Kurenai has been shown to be attentive to her Genin in the brief moments we see of her. Even though she most certainly lacks experience and the tactics of a Jonin in the manga/show, we can probably learn and train a lot better from her than the other Jonin sensei.

Kiba I can see becoming a good friend in the mid/long run. Him and Daisuke have bickered, sure, but never to actual hostilities as our other teammate has. Kiba also becomes a whole lot more mature and mellowed out within the next few years as well.

As for Mariko, well...
Relationships
Yokota Mariko: SO. MUCH. RAGE.
I just.... Iruka saw her coming at us with outright hostile intent, intending to use a jutsu to assault us in the middle of the Academy. She hates us with all her being, she has a massive inferiority complex which makes getting along with her effectively impossible without Pinnacle-level social stats, and will hate our guts as long as we're good friends with Ino. She's been outright rude in the Academy towards us in front of the teachers, including Iruka.

This is also a reason why joining our team immediately will ultimately fail as an option at the moment, because we lack the Willpower and social stats to effectively get her to not lash out at us and have her and Daisuke fight with one another as a result. The going to Iruka thing will just be barking at a brick wall essentially, and we're not kitted out with the proper social stats either to deal with him. The only vote that'll procure results as Daisuke is right now is the Ino one, and I'm definitely not against spending time with our friend before this whole mess starts up.

[X] Ask to speak to Iruka so that we can get Mariko's actions over the past 7 years and her attack on us officially documented so that they can be used as evidence in the future.

We cannot convince them to change the teams, fine. We can force them to document so that they know we are serious and have reasons beyond just not liking the psycho bitch. When it eventually comes down to it, being able to present evidence rather than it just being he said she said will be important.

Oh, it's probably noteworthy to point out that this is likely at least partially a result of our difficulty setting choice - Very Hard/Insane mode has consequences! Who would have thought?

...I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish Danzo had gotten his way for once. At least we can deal with Sasuke, even if it means having to deal with Itachi later.

Screw it, changing vote.

[X] There must be some mistake. Go talk to Iruka-sensei now, and try and change his mind! He's always listened to you in the past before. This time will be no different.

[X] You may not like one of them, but you have a team now. You should make the best of it. Go find Kiba and Mariko, and have lunch.

We have Kiba. Honestly, the good in that beats out the bad in Mariko!

We're the no-clan outsider. And as a bastard to the Iron Daimyō, our loyalties are even more suspect. As much as we want to kick up a stink over this blatant bias, we can't.

Uh, guys, I think it's a really bad idea to go eat lunch with Mariko. She's not gonna forget anything over just a single lunch, right now she will start shit, Daisuke is stressed, his best friend is in a rage/panic/hurt and he is not gonna be in a good headspace for this. An unsupervised lunch will end with Daisuke breaking Mariko's teeth or her attacking Daisuke. It won't give us ammunition, it won't help team dynamics and it won't help Daisuke right now.

Furthermore, how is Ino going to feel? This ain't just a 'she can deal with it'. This is her having someone she's spent every day with since she was a little kid separated from her, there will be a drift unless both work very hard to keep the relationship, and it will not be as close as it once was. She realises this, realises her childhood dream of being with the person closest to her in the whole world has been shattered.

And then she'll physically see that, instead of said best friend trying to comfort her, he went with the person who's tried to make her life miserable since she was five out for lunch.

That will only further enhance her worries of them drifting, made worse by who she'll see Daisuke chose over her.

When the cards were down, Ino choose to stick by Daisuke, over her friends and over her connection to a cousin, she choose to help him and now she needs him more than ever.

It's not fair if we just hurt her more right now.

[X] Ino does not look happy. She needs you now. Go find her before she gets too far away.

Gonna shut this one down right now. No. Just no. For one thing, no write ins on this vote. For another... what has she done to you over the past seven years? Be mean to you when you were seven and tried to use a jutsu once? That's the equivalent of a light shove.

[X] You may not like one of them, but you have a team now. You should make the best of it. Go find Kiba and Mariko, and have lunch.

People. please calm down. It is a bit harsh to say the administration is incompetent because they put us with Mariko. There is a perfectly logical explanation for it:
They are hazing the new jounin. Kurenai must have pissed someone something fierce. Either that or they saw how bad Mariko and us got along and decided to throw a puppy at the problem to see if it fixed it. Also, Kibe might not gawk as much at mother if he is busy having hots for teacher!

Seriously though, I am unsure if them giving her this team is a show of how much they trust her (she has us) or if it shows that someone does not want her to teach. Then again, in canon they gave her the offspring of three clan heads and in filler she trained another clan heir so... yay?

Also, Kurenai is not that bad. She is the only jonin in canon that we know actually trained her team: Asuma is only shown playing games with Shika, Kakashi teaches only if they would die otherwise and we only see Gai training Lee. Though to be fair, we do see his team train in the same grounds at the same time so he probably does train them all. Anyways, out of the 3 jonin we see this year, she is the one who seems to focus the most in training her team.

More concerning though: In canon, we hear that Hinata's problem is that she is nervous; according to Kurenai this leads to her doing really well in practice but to screw up on missions (to the degree it was noticeable and worth commenting on by the time of the chunin exam so... yeah). Between Kakashi not promoting team cohesion beyond the bell test and her been in team mission escalation, we might see an even worse performance than fanon Sakura! Though at least Naruto does not seem to have as much animosity against Sasuke.

Blinks in shock* No. No he didn't. Where did you get that idea from? And then when Iruka said that the class should treat us with the same respect that they would give him for our presentation, Mariko was a deliberate disrespectful little shit and then after when we essentially called her out for it and acted as Iruka would've, she escalated into near-attacking us with a jutsu! I don't get where you think we escalated things!
I was talking about the history presentation. She wasn't paying attention, but she also wasn't the only one. Daisuke singles her out and threw chalk at her, that is the beginning of the escalation there.
