Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

[X] See if you can get your teachers for approval to work on this instead of reviewing old stuff. Prove you know it already, if you have to!

[X] No, you'll pack up and head to class right now. You haven't missed a day yet and you're not starting now!

While skipping even just infrequently to work on this sounds tempting, it would probably hurt our chances of becoming Rookie of the Year.

Kakashi's Rival by Vermeer (canon)
@Vesvius here is Omake number two.

Kakashi Hatake was confused. This was not an unusual situation for him, especially when he dealt with his old friend and 'Eternal Rival', Maito Gai. What was unusual, however, was that Kakashi let his confusion show in his eye. The sight before him puzzled him greatly, as Gai, the famous Taijutsu master, Dynamically Entered the training grounds Kakashi had occupied, with a pair of blades in either hand. Using the eidetic memory of his Sharingan, Kakashi knew that the the last time he had seen Gai purposefully carrying a sword on him was 10 years and three months ago. That had been before Minato-Sensei died, during the only challenge between the two rivals that involved swordsmanship.

"Kakashi, I challenge you to a duel!" Gai's voice boomed with his usual cheerful energy, as a slight hint of smugness in his smile let Kakashi know that he had noticed Kakashi's confusion.

Well, that wouldn't stand. Kakashi erased any signs of confusion in his eye and pulled out his Icha Icha novel to "read". Still, despite reaffirming the nonchalant persona he knew would annoy the other jounin, Kakashi wouldn't bother pretending to be too busy to pay attention. After all, it had been a while since they had last genuinely competed and his rival currently held the lead in the number of victories between them.

That was unacceptable.

"I accept your challenge, Gai." Kakashi continued after a moment and decided that he couldn't forgo messing with the man completely. "Jan-Ken-Pon then?"

"So why the swords? They aren't exactly your style." Kakashi started lazily. The Green Beast had thrown him one of the swords he had brought to the training yard and the two of them had since started circling each other. Neither had yet to initiate the fighting, each waiting for the other to make the first move.

Naturally, Gai answered. "To grow the Flames of Youth means to fan every ember, no matter how small. What kind of teacher would I be, if I asked my student to develop all his skills, when I don't do the same for myself?"

Ah. So this was about Daisuke Satomura. Kakashi had heard a lot about the boy from Gai, but had not yet chosen to meet him. According to his friend, Daisuke was a prodigy not unlike Kakashi himself, but Kakashi wasn't sure if that was his old friend's typical exaggerations or the honest truth.

"So, young Daisuke has taken up the sword then?" Kakashi asked and while he waited for Gai's response, he initiated the spar with a quick charge towards Konoha's very own Green Beast.
His sword, a short tanto resembling something he had wielded back in his ANBU days, whistled through the air towards Gai's gut. Few inches from its target, it was blocked by a swift slash down from Gai's longer katana.

Gai spoke, turning his deflection into a slash at Kakashi's throat. "Yes, he has shown significant potential with the sword. Perhaps even more than his potential at Taijutsu. I want to nurture this ember within him. "

Kakashi hummed in agreement, as he nimbly dodged the blade swiping at him. Gai wouldn't have been his first choice for a kenjutsu teacher, but for an Academy Student who was only just picking up the sword, the man was more than sufficient. Still, Gai was perhaps his only friend, and Kakashi would definitely offer his help.

"Do you want me to meet Daisuke and give him a few pointers?"

At that statement Gai widened his eyes in surprise, and his sword, which he should have pulled back, lingered just a single moment too long. Kakashi pounced on that opportunity. At the angle Gai was holding his sword, there was a slight opening for Kakashi to strike at Gai's side. Though Gai was able to pull his sword back in time to block Kakashi's strike, he made a fatal mistake, as he placed himself off balance. With a quick flick of his wrist, Kakashi easily disarmed the unbalanced Gai. Gai's sword clattered to the ground and Kakashi held his tanto to his opponent's throat.

"Point to me and I do believe that means we're tied again." Kakashi cheerfully called as he lowered his sword.

Gai didn't seem to hear the last statement, as he seemed lost in thought, contemplating Kakashi's offer.

"Perhaps in the future, Kakashi. It won't be too long before I teach Daisuke what little I know about Kenjutsu. I shall take up your offer then!" Gai boomed grinning widely, his right hand folded in his signature thumbs up.

Kakashi smiled under his mask. "Until then, let's tune your own kenjutsu skills up. Rematch?"

Gai answered by laughing exuberantly and picking up his sword. "Rematch, double or nothing. This time you won't distract me Kakashi!"

They both got back into their stances and threw a kunai into the air. When they collided with the ground, they both charged in, swords flashing through the air.

Alright, we're Chunin level is Genjutsu, Kenjutsu, and Taijutsu so far. We only need 150 more EXP towards Ninjutsu to get that up to Chunin level as well!

And woah, @Katsuragi , that's good, if also rather menacing.

Pretty good, though I don't see Kakashi actually offering to teach some kid he's never met before, even if they're Gai's student. At most I imagine he'd do what he does in the omake, and help Gai brush up on his own skills so that he can better pass them on to Daisuke.

That's why he is offering pointers not teaching. Very different amounts of commitment.

Edit: to expand, in my mind, giving pointers is like a one time meeting where Kakashi gives some advice. I think Kakashi would do that much for Gai.

I don't know about that. Kakashi has always seemed like the sort to give someone a subject to work on and then let them figure it out. Like with tree walking or wind release: rasenshuriken.

@Kkutlord I'm willing to invest 50 XP in whatever your going to be investing in, whether it be Tone of Discord or Ninjutsu.

Quote me for whenever you tag Vesvius, so that he can invest mine too.

@Vesvius: I'd like to put my 60 XP towards Journeyman Ninjutsu.
Heard!
40 exp in tone of discord @Vesvius

Very nice! Take 60 XP and canon, though Kakashi bet the pointers vs. Gai's bet on something stupid in the rematch and won. No pointers for Daisuke.
Our adorably creepy writer.

Awwww. She wants to murder us all in our sleep for how her body was treated. Take 150 XP.

Also, here's a tally!
