Not to sound like a spoilsport, but the whole use of eidetic memory, when mistaken for photographic memory, feels unpleasant. It takes away the room for human error.

Eidetic memory (/aɪˈdɛtɪk/; sometimes called photographic memory) is an ability to vividly recall images from memory after only a few instances of exposure, with high precision for a brief time after exposure,[1] without using a mnemonic device.[2] Although the terms eidetic memory and photographic memory are popularly used interchangeably,[1] they are also distinguished, with eidetic memory referring to the ability to view memories like photographs for a few minutes,[3] and photographic memory referring to the ability to recall pages of text or numbers, or similar, in great detail.[4][5] When the concepts are distinguished, eidetic memory is reported to occur in a small number of children and as something generally not found in adults,[2][6] while true photographic memory has never been demonstrated to exist

[X] You'll have them sit down and talk about their problems.

Basically, this is a giant miscommunication, and it needs to be cleared up.

How would he know how to make these things?
Were ceiling fans a thing in canon? If not it wouldn't be too hard to "invent" a crude steam engine since tea and therefore teapots are a thing. Especially if bikes and bike chains are a thing. Mother, of course, will be the easiest to convince since we are her golden child, brilliant and smart and destined for greatness, of course. Might write up a few attempts at omakes dealing with fumbling through the concept.

For the record, the Discord isn't a secret cabal nor do know more then the average quester. We just talked about it earlier. I do believe that we should have the debate about eidetic memory here in thread.

So to start it off. The concerns can be boiled down to this. Remembering everything means remembering all the bad shit. Especially things that will fuck you up. Which is common in our line of work.

I think the most important point that was skipped is that the GM said that the trait will fuck us up.

The discussion we had here was basically speculations, assumptions and an argument that it was a cliche in Gamer fics... which doesn't mean much to those who don't read Gamer fics.

[X] You won't. This goes deeper than you thought it would. You'll just let them sort it out in time.

Ignoring it is a valid tactic. We have just a few months for Rookie; and if we fail we get a penalty. Just before we're dropped into missions. There is no need to court failure here. These girls anyway sorted it out in canon on their own with no help.

How would he know how to make one? I'm guessing that the majority of his former memories are gone or have faded by now, and honestly I don't think it'd be that great an idea. The world of Naruto already seems to have plenty of modern devices, and Snow Country already has that shit covered.

I'll remind people that perfect recall could potentially be a near-Sharingan level tool for duplicating jutsu, since a significant part of the jutsu is knowing the seals used, the name, and the intended effect. If we see someone perform the seals, call the name, and see what it does (especially given the inexplicable habit many ninja have of explaining, mid-battle, their secret signature techniques to their enemies) we are better than halfway towards learning the jutsu ourselves.

Quest Acquired: King of the Classroom!
To be rookie of the year, your skills need to be the unquestioned best in the class! That's no easy feat considering your competition. But if you can prove the then the honor, the glory, the prestige of being number one can all be yours!
Success Condition One: Demonstrate your skill to your teachers in 8 of the 12 following fields: Bunshin no Jutsu, Chakra Control, Genjutsu, Kawarimi no Jutsu. Henge no Jutsu, History, Mathematics, Ninjutsu, Outdoor Survival, Shurikenjutsu, Stealth and Tracking, Taijutsu.
Success Condition Two: Demonstrate competence in at least 3 skills or techniques not taught in the Academy. (1 Currently Demonstrated (Kenjutsu))
Skill(s): Many
On Success: Gain title 'Rookie of the Year', gain Achievement 'What Does It Take To Be Number One', Gain Reputation with 'Konohagakure', ???.
On Failure: Penalties vary depending on degree of failure.

Ok. so Success Condition One doesn't look too hard. We should be able to complete it by getting:
  1. Bunshin no Juts to Intermediate
  2. Henge no Jutsu to Intermediate
  3. History by getting Intelligence to Superhuman
  4. Math by getting Intelligence to Superhuman
  5. Genjutsu to Journeyman
  6. Ninjutsu to Journeyman
  7. Chakra Control to Superhuman
We would have to get Survival, Shurikenjutsu, and Stealth and Tracking to Journeyman to get any of those completed for this quest which I think is a bit too much. The 7 above are the closest ones we have to getting the next tier in the skill. So any of the 6 of the 7 listed should probably be the ones we should focus on. The harder part is probably the second success condition:

Success Condition Two: Demonstrate competence in at least 3 skills or techniques not taught in the Academy. (1 Currently Demonstrated (Kenjutsu))

Of the Jutsu Schools there is only Fuinjutsu: Untrained (000/100). We would probably need to get that to at least Adept before that may count. We could maybe also do Charka Sensing. We have Senses: Simple (450/800), but we would probably need to to be in at least Above Average or higher. I think it may be better to try to develop our own techniques or learn jutsu outside of class and then get them up to Intermediate. Maybe develop some Genjutsu. Something like Kin's technique, Bell Ring Genjutsu but without the bells would work wonders with our sword. Maybe have it be produced from us hitting our sword and producing a sound from there?

You cock an eyebrow and wait. Since Sakura is probably the smartest of all of you, you're going to assume she's not talking about actual intelligence, which means she's got more to say. Sure enough Ino continues a few moments later without prompting. "I mean, look at her! Look at how much she could do! She's got good seal speed, she's freakishly smart, she'd be a natural at so many things if she just tried!"

"I mean, like put yourself in her shoes. She's pretty high in the kunoichi rankings based just off her big ol' brain! But she doesn't have any real skill in anything practical. If I were her, I wouldn't be sitting around just working more on book work! I'd be branching out, finding more things to be good at! But she won't! She's happy with what little she's got instead of actually applying herself!"

So, somehow we have to explain to Sakura that Ino is just trying to help and that Ino is maybe being a bit too pushy about this? Tell Sakura that Ino thinks that she has the potential to be a truly great shinobi and that that is why Ino is always needling her about branching out. Maybe remind the both of them of their friendship and the good times?

In contrast, his reaction to you couldn't be more different. Once he's done greeting Ino like a soldier gone for many moons, he turns to face you. His easy smile vanishes, replaced by a business-like expression that makes him look like the trained shinobi he actually is. "Daisuke," he greets you.

"Yamanaka-san," you respond, bowing slightly. "It's good to see you once again."

"And you," he answers, responding to your near-lie with one of his own. "Are you planning on staying for dinner? I'm certain that we can set out an extra plate for you."

"Yeah, that'll be great!" Ino chirps, ignoring the subtext, and the fact that neither of you have taken your eyes off of each other since he greeted you. "I think Mom said she was making lamb tonight with a fresh berry sauce! You've got to stay for it!"

Lol. This was pretty great. Ino's dad having trouble with her daughter having a friend that isn't Choji or Shika is pretty funny.

Success Condition One: Demonstrate your skill to your teachers in 8 of the 12 following fields:

Bunshin no Jutsu -
Independent study
Kawarimi no Jutsu - done
Henge no Jutsu - Independent study
Shurikenjutsu -
Independent study

Chakra Control -
Ask Mizuki or Iruka for advanced exercises, pressure them, either we experiment on our own or they'll help. We should be quick to pick up the tree walking.

Genjutsu -
depends on Ino (see Success Condition Two)
Ninjutsu - Ask Gai for Body Flicker Technique
Taijutsu - done

History - Sakura in exchange for Tai-jutsu
Mathematics - Sakura in exchange for Tai-jutsu
[X] Ask Sakura for help in Math and History in return for helping her improve her Taijutsu and Kawarimi in order for her to show up Ino.
Ino would already be happy if she sees Sakura practicing something and would stop pestering her.

Outdoor Survival -
Maybe we can offer a simlar trade like Sakura's to Kiba?
Stealth and Tracking - Maybe we can offer a simlar trade like Sakura's to Kiba?

Success Condition Two: Demonstrate competence in at least 3 skills or techniques not taught in the Academy. (1 Currently Demonstrated (Kenjutsu))

- If Gai is willing to teach us the Body Flicker Technique, maybe we can offer a trade with Ino.
She learns a non-clan-technique or Gen-jutsu from her father and teaches us while we teach her the Body Flicker.

Let's take a look at how much XP we need to get Rookie.

Using the precedent that Replacement at Intermediate is good enough, I'll assume that raising a ninjutsu to Intermediate is the requirement (since it is not much above 500 XP).

We're currently 150 XP off from Transformation Intermediate and 190 XP off from Clone Intermediate. This also unlocks us an Achievement, so it should be prioritized. Cheapest way to get 2 more skills to level required. Whatever else we do, we shouldn't miss this.

Now, let us look at Shinobi Arts. Here, we probably need to be Journeyman, as Journeyman level Taijutsu is the only real qualifier. There could be come other req like 1000 XP in the skill but I don't think so since Ken has 950 but counts for the other requirement.

Ninjutsu is 380 XP away from level up, and Shurikenjutsu is 350. Genjutsu is 400 XP, but Genjutsu is kind of crap and more expensive to boot. The rest we can ignore.

Chakra Stats - we have no benchmark here, so I suggest first working on the above two categories (since we have firm benchmarks for what to aim for). Control and Reserves are 320 and 380 XP away from next level. Don't bother levelling Senses now, it is too low level.

Skills - we have no idea what the benchmark is. I recommend raising Survival by 60 XP to the 400 XP mark - this will let us confirm what the benchmark for Rookie is, and is also really cheap and useful. After this, we should reconsider.

....

Holy fuck, this Achievement is gonna be XP intensive as hell. This is already more than a thousand XP total. We need to do it now, or we'll eat a penalty later. Let us go forth and try our best!

Uchiha's aren't really the paragon's of mental stability that I think we should model our character after. If there are negative sideffects to perfect recall, then it should really be avoided. Also, the Sharingan allowed the user to copy the chakra flow of the technique and how they molded their chakra. Knowing the seals doesn't do jack if you don't know the how the rest. All I see it being possibly good for is memorizing maps or enemy documents that we aren't supposed to take with us. But being a ninja we should have been trained in memorization techniques already, and I think Superhuman Intelligence can take care of the rest.

I don't think we necessarily have to get to journeyman, since the teachers see the end result and not our character sheet. It comes down to what we can prove. This is good, I think, because if we get bunshin and henge to intermediate, the teachers will probably think that we're good at Ninjutsu enough to check it off. Especially if we get superhuman chakra control or another technique.

Also @Vesvius the Achievement states we need to show significant skill in History / Maths, but we don't seem to have a skill for those*. Is it covered under Academics / high INT?

*I actually think this should be a separate skill. Ninja have pretty good mental math feats. Temari was able to look at Shikamaru using a wall's shadow and rapidly calculate its range down to the centimeter, for one.

but Genjutsu is kind of crap and more expensive to boot.

Genjutsu isn't crap and it is more expensive by maybe 50 xp, so not much at all. Honestly, I would argue that Genjutsu would work extremely well when combined with our Kenjutsu. We can cause sound based Genjutsu that causes our enemies to hallucinate by pinging our sword. Tapping our fan on something and casting a Genjutsu we can make an illusion that misdirects where we actually are. Genjutsu definitely isn't a crap field. Most of the ninja population likely more susceptible to Genjutsu than Ninjutsu. Genjutsu can be used to trip up our enemies and distract them while we rush in and butcher them with our Kenjutsu and Taijutsu. It is the best way for us to close in on an enemy.
