Examine: Void Abacus- The Void Abacus is one of the most complex pieces of technology that Archmagos Tranth has ever seen. Despite that he thinks that with some time and effort he should be able to reverse engineer it from the examples that he has found. Given how important any increase in FTL speed is this could be vital to the survival of the Imperial Trust.

Time: 1 year
Chance of Success: -200% (-34% after bonuses)

Cost: 32,000,000 Thrones, 79,000 Advanced Material, 8,900 Exotic Material
Reward: Gain Blueprints of Void Abacus , lose d6 Void Abacuses.
Decode: Roskilde Star Chart- The Roskilde Star Chart shows the location of the hidden shipyard Roskilde, where the Deus Class Superdreadnought was being designed along with several other massive naval ships and stations. However it is heavily encoded and will need to be decided before you can find the exact locations. Fortunatly the encryption is far weaker then that of a Data-Jewel and Fabricator-General Scott tells you that it should be possible, especially with the assistance of the Sphinx and Ridcully.

Time: 1 year
Chance of Success: -150% (-9% after bonuses, failing reduces success cahnce by 15% of margin of failure)

Cost: 32,000,000 Thrones, 79,000 Advanced Material, 8,900 Exotic Material
Reward: Decode the Roskilde Star Chart.

@Durin
1. Can we use two slots in the same year for the above actions to get an artificial double down bonus on them?
2. If yes, will doing so for the Void Abacus cost an extra d6 of them?

So after a tremendous amount of fiddling, and deciding to discard the proportional weapons split between classes since they all add up to 100% or 100.5% I'm assuming that proportional split is just to indicate what weapons are targeting what ships.

This is how many Waagh level 2 (since Waagh gives +20% armor per level it will vary with level) Ork Ravager/Savage/Onslaught escorts can be killed per turn by 10 of each of these sizes of battery at each range. I'm not sure how many escort class weapon mounts can fit in place of a cruiser mount, but they likely aren't effective since you'd need more than a 2:1 exchange ratio to make them better at any point. Brute and Hook ork escorts have slightly more armor, which will heavily skew it towards cruiser weapons, and slightly towards short range weapons.

Short ranged weapons predominate at short and medium ranges, which in any direct confrontation will be most of the range the escorts operate at. For harassment operations where you try to stay at the edge of the enemy ranges the long range weapons will be more effective, though you still won't be able to inflict very much damage.

I will likely try to compute survivability against typical ork escorts next. Perhaps for the sake of sanity using an average of the weapons of all ork escort types evenly.
You're doing His Work.

I thought that we have limited numbers of Void Abaci.

EDIT: YEP!

Explore Ruins: Deiphobe-- Deiphobe has the most extensive ruins of any of the moons of Cumea and as such Archmagos Tranth would like to being his explorations there. Due to the condition of the ruins and how wildly scattered they are it will take most of a decade for him to explore them.

Time: 8 years

Cost: 39,000,000 Thrones, 390,000 Material, 39,000 Promethium, 7,900 Advanced Material, 890 Exotic Material
Reward: Explore ruins of Deiphobe, chance of STC schematics, chance of archeotech chance of ??

Complete
+12 Void Abacuses (+60% Navigated Warp Speed reaching 1.75LY/day, +100% unnavigated Warp Speed reaching 0.5LY/day)

That's why I'm asking. I don't want to potentially burn through all of them on the first try. Better to do it in multiple tries, so we can get Ridcully's cheating bonus several times.

So I've now finished math for calculating the effect of the average ork escort ship against one of our escort cruisers. Since they used approximately equal numbers of each escort last time I just averaged their weapons loadouts.

This represents how many escort cruiser the hypothetical 'average' ork escort can kill per turn. You'll notice that the 'average' ork escort gets radically more effective at close range. While even our short range optimized cruiser weapons only increase in effectiveness by about 25x as the range changes from extreme to short, the orks weapons increase in effectiveness by a factor of about 48x. This is because ork close range ramming and boarding attacks have much higher armor penetrating than their longer ranged weapons. Which follows the conventional wisdom of ork weapons being short ranged.

Unfortunately this isn't really all that practical to take advantage of. An extreme range continuous engagement with the escort cruiser using long range batteries only will eventually beat 10 ork escorts in a 1v10 battle and still have over half health, but it would take 38 space combat rounds (6 hours), and none of our engagements last that long. (If you spin out to infinite length it could defeat up to 12 this way and be barely alive.) Though because of the way damage degrades combat performance gradually a series of smaller engagements where it destroys say 2 escorts at a time will dramatically improve results since it can kill 2 in a 1v2 in 5 rounds and take only like 2-3% hull damage.

A short range engagement using an escort cruiser with only short ranged weapons on the other hand is utterly brutal and over quickly. It can only take on 4 at a time, but the battle is over in less than 2 rounds with it at 1/3rd health. Against 2 ships it can kill both in 1 round with 75% health left.

Comparing this with a Squire Frigate we get that a squire can handle 1 ork escort at short range in 4 rounds with 31% health remaining. Any more than that will defeat it. At Long range (because at extreme range squires and orks will take forever to accomplish anything either direction) it takes 6 rounds for Squire to kill 1 ork escort with 86% health remaining. 20 rounds to kill 2 with 31% health remaining, and it can't manage more than that without losing.

Obviously fractionals can apply here, but these rough estimates give some idea of how battles will go.

@Enjou can we do Fanning the flames instead of wellspring? We need to keep those orks busy for as long as possible.

We seriously neeed to do a fannnong the flame action. It has been a decade since the last time we one.

Also consider dropping some actions to mentee the Alpha taking her trails.

Those actions are for the important psyker hunters, though. The corruption isn't on the level of the Chaos Incursion.
The Daemonic Incursion taught us to put everything we possibly can into preventing cults from growing. I really hope that I won't have to say "I told you so" in the future.

@Durin
1. Is Aria supposed to loose her learning bonus when she became a grand master?
2. What are the chances of the Trust and the orks missing a subterranian and sentient xenos species on one of the colony worlds? An idea I had probably won't go anywhere.
3. Do we know when the Border Lions stopped harassing the abomination forces?
4. After the fight do the Trolls seem slightly more open to additional help from us? For instance giving them the abilities of a tech level 1 or 2 civ?
5. What exactly killed Callahan? I can't remember if he was on Avernus or Mar Sara and I don't remember him dying during the fight on Avernus...and if he was on Avernus wouldn't he have been in Aradia?
2. pretty low, non existent if they have a civilization
3. when the last Angyl was banished
4. diplomacy
5. he was killed in the defense of Dis
@Durin - how long will these Lessons Learned actions be available?
this turn and next turn
Ok, thanks. One more question:

"failing reduces success cahnce by 15% of margin of failure" indicates that failing makes things harder on subsequent tries. Is this supposed to be something else to indicate it gets easier, since the Data Jewel action says sustained effort should work? Because I'm not sure how it'd get harder, since we should be able to just copy the encrypted data before doing anything with it, and work off of that without doing any kind of damage.
you can't copy the data without partially decrypting it, and it is cheating that makes it get easier along with near successes
@Durin 1. What determines the proportion of damage from a weapon type hitting each size class of ship (escort, cruiser, battleship, dreadnought)? It varies on each of the sheets so it isn't static. Is it determined by narrative structure of the battle? Or off sheet somehow?
a mix of both, in general the higher the AP the higher the proportion goes to larger ships
@Durin
1. Can we use two slots in the same year for the above actions to get an artificial double down bonus on them?
2. If yes, will doing so for the Void Abacus cost an extra d6 of them?
1. yes
2. yes

I don't think we should examine the void abaci now. Our success odds are just so bad that.. we should leave it to later.

Actually lot if not most fantasy setting tend to at least partially explain now their magic works because setting having at least illusion of a consistent rules (as opposed to just a random authorial fiat) makes it much more immersive.
The rules are consistent. Ranged weaponry is less effective at every scale than you'd expect in our world. The problem is that since its not obviously magic people think that its mundane.
And yes many settings follow rules, but thats not the same thing as justification. We know the rules of bending in Avatar but there's nothing to justify what makes those rules the rules. How did Bending shift from something people where given by magic turtles to something that you where born with, why do people only bend one element? What does chi actually do?

Chapter Five Canon Omakes: The Lady Commodre Syr Rotbart Comes Home
Omake - The Lady Commodre Syr Rotbart Comes Home

Home.

At least that's what Syr thought as she departed the transport shuttle. Helguard standing ready to escort her and her Naval escort to the Guber National Palace. It was her yearly visit to Avernus and despite the trauma caused by this planet she relished the opportunity to return.

In Mar Sara, Syr squared off with some Ork Kroozers and Battle Kroozers above the planet and even briefly led a maneuver to shield escorts from heavier firepower from the Hulks. It was rough and the equivalent of 24/7 fighting led to her squadron becoming knackered. A dehibilatatimg symptom of exhaustion that led to errors which led to deaths. She can still remember the screams from one compartment as the hull was breached and they ran out of air in order to load another salvo for firing. May they all rest in peace knowing Victory was achieved.

But the worst of the fighting was when her friend Commodore Greta Gertville of Vanahiem was flanked on both sides and handed a full broadside on both ends. Her ship barely held together as she sounded for emergency evacuation...she and many others did not get out before a Battle Kroozer decided to just ram her ship and bisected it. Crude and Cruel the Orks were but Sy made sure that ship didn't leave the battlefield intact. In fact, they're still floating around as debris.

As she makes her way inside the palace and walks through the halls she notices that the world is somehow quiter now. No screaming or sounding of macrocannons. No bursting of eardrums from ship captains relaying statuses. Just the sound of her own thoughts and the foot steps behind her.

"It has been awhile young Commodore." The commisar greets "Am I glad to see you alive and well. Heck, I should expect no less from the Heir of Rotbart himself."

The guards quickly move in between Syr and Commisar Dalve. 'Shit there new...this is going to be awkward.' Thought Syr.

"Halt Commisar! The Lady Commodore has no meeting with unregistered guests. Your rudeness will be met with a court martial!"

Salve only smiled as the Navy Rates pointed there rifles at the Commisar. Syr tapped there shoulders to get them to relax. She didn't want broken bones out here.

"It's fine Ruslag. Commisar Salve has been infiltrating this Palace on behalf of my Father since I can remember.

He's just here to greet me after a year from home"

"How honored I am to hear those words from Lady Syr herself. I'll make sure to remember them when Ajax sends the Lifeguard chasing me out again. Speaking of which..."

We all look up as a red alert sounds and sliding metal doors shut off our hallways. Dalve nonchalantly puts on a gas mask and moves toward a speaker.

Seems Ajax is still as serious as ever in making the Palace impossible to infiltrate. Not that the Phase Tigers or Sepat know the meaning or limitation. Shit she wishes she had joined that outfit at some point. It would be nice to go where she pleased.

"Ahh! Right on time Ajax you finally caught me. It only took you 2 hours less than last time although I did give you advanced notification so I think it's fair to add a penalty yes?"

'Oh Commisar. Your words will never stop burning that poor man.' Thought She as she allowed a slight smile.

(Hours later)

In the guest wing the Rates pour her some tea and milk. After recent exercises in extreme infiltration she liked the idea of a relaxing drink. After all, she was literally surrounded by rates, Helguard, and a cheeky Commisar.

"Lady Syr" said her old maid Felicia "The Governor will be shortly. He is just about finished being given a intellience brief by Chief Arbiter Oakheart and Lord Inquisitor Klovis."

"Very well. Please put the room stereo at white noise. I'd like a hear an enhancement from its volume."

The Maid Felicia goes slightly and walks over to press a button to drown the room with white noise. It was a nice day so far to be fair. For an Avernite that is.

Some time later the door opened revealing Governor Frederick Rotbart the Great of Avernus. Arguably one of the chief archiects of the Imperial Trust and a man respected by all and loved by most.

"Hey Dad. Dis you finish your paperwork?"

Syr however only sees her old father though. Even if the Juvenat made him look like a 40 year old man he was always going to be Syr's old man.

"Haha yes of course Syr" he opens his arms for a hug. Behind him on his left is Ajax scowling in the direction of Salve.

She stands up and quickly goes to embrace her father and gently kisses him on his cheek.

"By the Emperor you have no idea how much I thought about you."

She kisses him again as he hugs her deeper. They both slightly tear up as Ajax quickly gets in between the other guests and the Father and Daughter. The maids as diplomatic as ever hurry the Naval Rates and even the Commisar to exit the room. Leaving only the two and the Governors Own of Fresericks retinue.

"I love you so much Syr.."

"I love you too daddy." As she kisses his other cheek. "How is our home? I heard Saint Lin survived the ordeal thank the Emperor."

Leaving the embrace Frederick nods slightly as he ushers for a drink of wine to be brought over.

"Casualties were high and the Orks did us no favors. We even saw more Avernites die against the Orks then against the Abominations Crusade.

Course that means nothing compared to the literal battleships they rammed into my city. Damn traitors got so despeate that they threw way there honor to kill Saint Lin. Not like I had anything to say about it..."

He mused.

Syr shook her head. "I guess the despeate and the cruel have much in common. I have stories to tell you dad. But ,uh, I might get promoted again see..."

End

I like your plan and will probably just ditch my preliminary one. That said, a few comments:
  1. Economic Focus: Thrones is fairly iffy this turn, as it boosts the whole-turn production and our anti-cult measures are going to tank production in Dis, one of our largest population centers. Part of the reason I went with the Educational Review. Yes, it doubles down on the Review fairly hard, but the low-ish bass success chance means that's not much of a waste.
  2. Double Down on Cheating is almost only more valuable if success is impossible (or nearly that) on the current attempt. For the Roskilde decode, 2d20 from the Sphinx and 1/5 of the Cheating expected success gives us an expected +49 to that roll this turn, giving it a *base* success chance of 40%. With DD and rerolls that's actually substantially more likely to pass than not. That and the DD on Cheating only gives us an extra +4% to future actions.
  3. Finally, I would argue for Xavier researching the Hellflame Coral Power over the Temple Cats simply due to his own specialization. Yes, Ridcully actions are worth more and Xavier does have a generic research bonus, but the action is only a year long and the specialization bonus on that sort of thing is quite sizeable.

A mechanical question: Taking over an action for someone else (moving the action from military to personal or visa versa) moves the remainder of the action into the new slot. Does it take time in the former slot for the handover or is it instant? If it takes time how long is it?

I ask because Enjous plan moves such an action.

@Enjou

Changes I would make:

1. DD on Wellspring of Power. Remember, Ridcully's odds of success on the action Is Not Great.
2. A DD on Power Melody is worth considering. (I'd suggest delaying it to Y3, and researching the Illusion Pine or Hellflame Coral power.)
3. Admin. Reform is an action that should have as many bonii stacked on it (as practical) whenever we try it, because of DC increases - In leiu of that, I suggest taking more Education Reform actions. Or just more Economic Focus (Thrones).

Change all of the Arbite actions to dealing with cults. The lesson we learned last time is to put absolutely all our effort into crushing cults. Having two slots do anything but hunt cultists for two full years is unacceptable.

Given we haven't been put into single year turns, I don't think this outbreak is intended to be nearly as bad. It's contained to two cities, one of which has an extra bonus against cultists due to it being the capital. Saint Lin is also inside of that city, and will be actively working to purify those who were most exposed. We also have all the bonuses we've accrued since then. I imagine the militia armories are going to be locked down from the start of this, until things get back to normal.

Though we can always ask. @Durin - is this cultist outbreak expected to be as bad as that from the daemonic incursion (relative to it being in only a couple cities), or to be less of an issue?

1. Done.
2. The DD's are needed for the AdMech research due to low chances of success.
3. I believe we've only done it once, so the success chance is still 35%, which is better than Education Reform's 10%. Or are you concerned about Throne cost? (still waiting on someone to math out costs for the plan, by the by - I'm too busy to do it)
