Shepard Quest Mk VI, Technological Revolution

*sigh* Welp, our security is fucked because people wanted to attack. Expect the security network to be completely down at best case, worst case the automated defenses start shooting at us.

At least we cut off the research network.

Anyways. In the future? We aren't getting anything less than 2000 power armored security troops per facility for defense.

At minimum I'd say that we'll lose the ability to coordinate using the security network, not to mention all the automated defenses we have. Oh, plus the sensor network. We'll have to purge the entire network and reboot to a older version just to make sure there wasn't any nasty surprise left. Which will take alot of time. Time that the attackers can use to attack the facility.

Oh, and to double the trouble, our communications to the outside will likely be down.

So, we'll be blind, dumb and deaf. That's the best case. Worst case? We have to demolish our own defenses as they try to attack us.

If they actually manage to steal designs i'm tempted to donate copies of any stolen designs to humanity and the three council races.

Well, thankfully we completely shut down the research networks and sent sweeps through the server rooms, so it *should* be safe. The problem is that if the security network is compromised our defenses are completely fucked.

We can always just pull the plug, you know?

We tried to keep the security network up because it would improve our response ability in case of assault, but we're still kind off... rather well protected even discounting the extras from our automated systems.

[x] You're good

You've got enough firepower to cut though six tanks and several units of infantry. That should be enough.

[X] ...hack the attacker back. (May gain intel on hacker, success will delay hacking)

Base Roll: 18D6E5=>2|ones:3 + Edge Roll: 3D6M5=>2 + Exploded Dice: 1D6M5=>0 = 4 VS Unknown

As you attempt to hack the attacker back though their access point you are distracted for a moment wondering how the hell the access point they are using even works. As far as you can tell it not physically there at all and might be... moving? The investigating teams still haven found anything.

Curiosity seems to not have done the cat any favors this time. This distraction delays your response for only fractions of a second, but its enough. And you discover that you were wrong. This hacker isn't operating on your level at all, the access point they are using is just holding them back. Out matched and a little panicked, you're surprised when the attacker opens another connection and tricks your Neural Interface into running your VR program.

The virtual space loads quickly. The server for this space seems to use as little bandwidth as possible. You load into an open city with tall gray metal buildings. However the style doesn't match any that you know of the blue and green luminous highlights are not something you can recall from any race or location. The presence of small open decks on the side of some of the skyscrapers and other tall buildings stands out as well.

Sadly the low bandwidth means that you are missing most of the art assets. Many objects around you are represented by polygons covered in either red or black and white static . Which sadly ruins the beauty of the city. It probably looks quite nice when the art is available.

You try to calm yourself as you look around. In front of you is a sphere covered by red static. The sphere spins as you hear a voice, "Welcome Progresser child. Flawed as you are, you are interesting to us."

What do you do?
[ ] You put overrides into the Neural Interface for just this reason! Use them! Get out.
- [ ] And shut down the security server completely.
- [ ] And disable any known compromised part of the security server hope the rest is fine.
- [ ] Then go where or do what?
[ ] Who ever this is seems willing to talk so you'll try that.
- [ ] What will you say/ask? (Writing questions and stuff yeah?)
[ ] Explore the virtual space some, maybe you'll find some clues?
[ ] Something Else?

Event notes:
Non-combatants have been evacuated.
Research Server is offline.
Security Server is probably compromised.
Investigating security teams have found nothing.
You have no other information on what is going on.

----
GM's Note: Well that went poorly for you. On the upside... well we'll see how this goes. Anyway all the usual. Oh also you can use the overrides to pop out of the VR whenever you want. A shot and quick update just as I wanted! Yay! Some part of me wishes it was longer, but I felt a vote was definitely needed here.

this mass affect and the speech patterns are wrong for the geth so that means reapers.
(Flawed as you are(that screams reaper so indoctrination ho))

Either Geth...or Reaper, wonderful. :jackiechan:

Defenitely Reaper Geth don't talk like this so that is why we get the fuck out, purge everything, completely replace the system, and throw the infected bits into the nearest sun.

You know its funny but these didn't get mentioned in the vote and thus not in the update. (One version did IIRC) The Alliance Cruiser London and her Flotilla just stopped by to pick up their shipment. So you have maybe two or three. (Built at a rate of ~12 per day)

Ships have been dropping by fairly regularly to pick up Tigers. Multiple times a week often.
The ones we still have would still be in the factory, though, and we'd be literally to dumb to live if our standard security procedures did not include rolling out our tanks if and when the facility is threatened.

On a side note it as entirely reasonable for you to win the hacking contest... you just didn't. The Dice felt like being very mean for some reason.
Also, if we're using SR4 rules, in this case Edge should be used to reroll failures, rather than added dice, though frankly given the importance of the roll (failure means our security is compromised and some of our people are going to die) if it were me playing I'd have used Edge pre-emptively so the 6s would have exploded.

So...

Cool your jets people; didn't we want to meet the virtual aliens? I think this is them.
I'd be interested if they weren't hacking our shit; right now they're an attacker, and have somehow managed to LOL!Nope all our computer security. Once we're no longer being attacked I'm inclined to be more reasonable.

Progressor isn't a Reaper term either, I don't think. VA?

Its not used in canon, but then the Reapers don't talk much in all honesty. Or explain themselves very well. In an objective call I wouldn't say its confirmation either way.

Also to be precise they called you a "Progressor child" don't recall the reapers calling people children all that if at all much really.

Also some quick comments on Reaper related stuff as an FYI, because this got brought up. IIRC I've said this before and I'll say this again.

1) Reapers don't talk all that much in canon really and the ones you do talk to, well.... they're all dicks. So the information there is of limited quality accuracy and depth. I feel free to make stuff up to fill in the holes.

2) I've tweaked the Reapers ever so slightly so they have a semi-constant morality and though process. To run them as a faction I need to understand how they work and what they want. Most of what is in canon is still correct. Though some minor things in the Leviathan DLC and the final confrontation with the Intelligence (Star Child) maybe a little off now. I've tried to keep the alterations minimal though. The critical highlights of turning races into goo and making new reapers using them are still there. As well as the other bits.

So it could be the VA or it could be... someone else!

i rather be safe than indoctrinated

Wait, we're a Tony Stark expy; have to get a quip in first:

[X] "If you wanted to talk, I have a public email address."

The Prothean artifact was never actually delivered here, correct? So there's no way it would be a Prothean VI embedded in the thing that's hacking us.

Correct; all we got were scans from Liara:
"Wouldn't it be easier to send it to us?" you ask.

"There are some legal complexities that make that a little more annoying than it would seem at first. If you think it would help after looking the scans I'll have it delivered, but dealing with the scans is far easier." Liara answers, "The laws can be annoying at times, but they help protect the artifacts."

"I'll take a look then if I get the chance then." you say.
