Nacli or Charcadet, since that gives us more time to train. Gimmighoul is the funniest option, though.

Points for Gym challenging:

1. We HAVE to start the Gym process either today (to fight Katy on Wednesday) or tomorrow (to fight Katy on Thursday)
2. We WANT to pick up our new party member before the Gym fight fires, meaning today, Tuesday, or if we start the Gym ball tomorrow, Wednesday.
3. Every available Pokémon in Heights and Ruins has some form of type advantage over Katy except Pawniard, Yamask, and Woobat (neutral, although Woobat has supereffective STAB). Of the latter two sections, Combee and Shroodle have some form of advantage, where everyone else is either neutral or weak against Bug.
4. Exploring or shopping will benefit everything we plan to do here that ISN'T Gym or Pokémon catching so we really ought to fit in one.

We can both Shop and Explore today and get the Gym and Catching balls rolling tomorrow without screwing ourselves.

If we want to be aggressive and don't want a sidequest-locked Mon, I recommend Shop+Catch

If we want to be aggressive and do want a sidequest-locked Mon, I recommend Shop+Gym Leader

Eesh, though, +10% success odds on all our tasks is really good, especially since in the example back in the informational, failing on a Mandatory gave a Wound, which is something we really really want to avoid if possible given our tight schedule and Roland's adorable face. I think I'll probably vote for Shop+Explore.

"Oh thank granmo—god you're here." A haggard looking Erika walks up to your group.
This line is really fun if you know anything about Emma from Cold Steel, who Erika is filling in for narratively.
In Cold Steel, Emma's grandmother is something called a Divine Beast, one of seven divine creatures sent by the god to protect divine treasures. In this case the implication sort of means that... Erika was adopted by a legendary pokemon and thats what she means by "granmo- god" which is really funny to me.
The most striking one is a mural of Emperor Rodrigo atop his Imperial Rapidash, wielding Durandal, his Aegislash.
I loved it when Emperor Roland Rodrigo whipped out Durandal and Furioso'd all over the enemy.
You weren't surprised at not beating Theodora but Elise is surprisingly good at card games herself.
Protagonist benefit. Elise is save-scumming for perfect Triple Triad wins.
As your instructor finishes, Missy emerges from Miss Leaf's shadow. She makes her way over to your group before diving into Elise's shadow. Your classmate rubs her hands together, exhaling to keep them warm.
Oh come on! Protagonist benefit twice in a row! I thought we bonded Missy~
[] When In Rime: You briefly explored Mesagoza during your first week in the city. Cortondo is much smaller in comparison, you could probably spare a couple of hours seeing the sights, visiting the locales and just exploring to your heart's content. -1 AP
I think we'll want to do this regardless of what we spend the other AP on. Reducing the DC of all side quests is kinda amazing.

[] Cortondo Cart: You've kept it on the down low but you haven't bought any supplies yet for the Field Exercise. You just didn't have the time to spare while in Mesagoza to buy any. Aside from things like exploration equipment, rope, and other Trainer essentials, you'll probably also need some healing items. The local stores have some selection of TMs but there's much less variety than in Mesagoza. And they're much more expensive here. -1 AP

I agree on doing full prep today by going for Exploring and Shopping, but why can't we fight Katy on Friday? The exercise proper is from Tuesday to Friday, so I'm not seeing a reason why we can't start the process on Wednesday.

All right, let's see here...

Well, first of all, the chapter itself.

"You must be Ostia's guardian." Leaf says in a neutral tone. Elise seems confused, while Theodora does that face she makes when she's unsure of something. Raifort gives a little smile at your teacher.

"Indeed I am, my name is Raifort Arasia, you must be Leaf Midorikawa." There's tension in the air. Leaf's shadow is writhing, meaning Missy is agitated. But why?

You take a second look at Raifort, and you catch it. It is near imperceptible. It is only your familiarity with Missy that allows you to see it. Raifort's own shadow writhes. She has a Ghost-Type with her.
That pokemons a Gengar, but didn't feel like editing to put it in this quote. It's amazing that this woman isn't a villain the games, but unless she's red herring even harder here she's definitely evil. She has a Malamar on her team for gpds sake!

As you comfort and calm down Ostia; Elise and Theodora immediately barrage your instructor with questions.

"...Look, like it or not—I don't, for the record—she's Ostia's legal guardian. I barely know anything about her. Surprisingly little paper trail for a lab researcher." Leaf mutters that last part under her breath. Elise looks unsatisfied with your instructor's explanation while Theodora is outraged.
Well, I'm glad it's known among some of Class VII that Raifort fucking sucks as a guardian, and if we thought it work CPS would've been here weeks ago.

Trainers, young and old, greenhorn and veteran, scramble to head out from the urban settlements and back into the wild. To train, journey and eventually battle across the region. While taking the railways between cities isn't explicitly forbidden, for regular trainers there's a taboo to their usage.

Using Airships and Trains is seen by most Trainers as contrary to the spirit of a Journey. Just one of many reasons why a lot of them deeply resent Mesagoza students. The glares are out in full force today. While Mesagoza residents look at your group with a mix of pride, affection and nostalgia; a decent number of people with Pokemon have nothing but disdain for you.
That would be an issue for the trainers who pride themselves on roughing it through the woods, yeah. It is sort of a class privilege thing I guess, even if we ourselves aren't nobles. It's understandable-

It's even starting to get to Ostia, who's fidgeting. Elise is meditating, Rin placed on her lap, while Theodora is seemingly thriving at the looks of hostility given her way. You try your best to shrink away from the looks people give you.
-but they're bullying Ostia, and that isn't fucking allowed. Mariana remember their faces so we can find their names later. We got a List to form.

"Oh thank granmo—god you're here." A haggard looking Erika walks up to your group. She hands Group 1's tickets over to Elise before explaining what happened before you arrived.
Sakamander already mentioned the Trails side of things here. But yeah, most likely a pokemon of sufficient power and/or influence that her people swear to this grandmother figure instead of god (presumably Xerneas, Arceus, whatever).

Also that poor group, already running the sane ones ragged.

Unfortunately for the two of you, even with you and Ostia openly colluding, neither of you were able to triumph over your opponents. You weren't surprised at not beating Theodora but Elise is surprisingly good at card games herself.
Protagonist-chan please stop cheating. Or at least give us some of that Save/Load goodness.

As your instructor finishes, Missy emerges from Miss Leaf's shadow. She makes her way over to your group before diving into Elise's shadow. Your classmate rubs her hands together, exhaling to keep them warm.
Hm, I wonder if we can do that with Roland? I know he's a lot more physical but surely it's possible? Also making a note, find a way to stay warm or get used to the ghost chill. Just in case we manage it or get more ghosts.

If Mesagoza is a city of the past and future of the region, Cortondo falls squarely onto the past side of the divide.
Oh geez, Paldea and time based themes? I wonder why that could be.

Ostia's grip on your hand tightens, as if sensing your nerves. "It's okay Miss Mary, lots of people just like staring. Most of them don't mean anything by it." Why are you getting lectured by a child? You chuckle, feeling like you've lost control of your life, if you even had it in the first place.
Ostia is great. I'm glad they know that Mariana is a neurotic mess and needs help with anxiety some or all of the time.

She leads your group upstairs while Alcremie takes over the front managing the customers. The room she provides your group is a pretty spacious one: it has four beds, a bathroom and even an old TV. You and your friends settle in and put down luggage, with Ostia even testing the bed. They give it their certified fluffy rating.
Ostia is adorable. 10/10. No notes.

Well, right now I'm thinking When In Rime is a necessity, a 10% decrease in task difficulty is big. We should do this now. The second choice is a lot harder. I'm thinking we maybe do the gym sign-ups tomorrow? We have time. Then again, doing it today means having more AP for tasks tomorrow. On the other other hand, getting medical supplies could be good, on the other other other hand, why get potions if you never get hurt? Just don't roll badly 5head.

  • A Tinkatink Guild had recently moved into the Heights bringing it into conflict with the local Pawniard Battalions. Led by a Tinkatuff and a Bisharp respectively. The two species have been feuding and fighting for the past few years for territory and resources. The former require rich minerals for their weaponry and the latter need the same for sustenance and the maintenance of their blades. However…

Interesting conflict here. Type wise the two groups are net neutral, with their shared Steel Typing negating any edge they'd have over the other.

Stat wise, is very much in favor of the Pawniard line. Not only do these guys just have more raw stats, they're also hefty Physical attackers while the Tinks are more speced into Special Bulk.

One the other hand, Tinkatinks evolve way easier than Pawniard do, so being able to Field potentially more Tinkatuffs could be enough to swing things in their favor.

Although, that However implies something has recently shifted the balance of power between the groups.

"Well, take care then, Ostia. You have your instructions." Ostia nods glumly at that.
Well that's not ominous at all!

Personally I think we should do both prep actions today, lowering all the DCs is obviously worth it, and we'll want some potions around for the rest of the week. Probably not necessary to buy TMs here though, we can get those back home if we get more cash.

I think one of the prep action plus catch Nacli/Charcadet/Aron to have a 2 mon to help out with the gym.

So, if I'm reading right, the earliest we can get Tinkatink is day three? First day (Now) we can't do the quest to resolve the conflict, second day to actually resolve it, third day to catch a Tinkatink impressed with our knightly showing in resolving it, fourth day to have Tinkatink beat up a bug or two.

It's a tight ship, but even if we picked something earlier like a day 2 Charcadet I doubt we'd have time for a training action anyway. Not between the Gym sapping AP and the actual quests we have to do while we're here.

Reducing the DC for that action is basically a no-brainer, since failing to deal with the Tink/Pawn conflict would just break any hope of that plan. On top of also just being bad from an action economy standpoint. We only have so many options here and we need to get our AP's worth.

"Yeah, you should travel the region the way Xerneas intended. Riding a Prehistoric / futuristic dragon motorcycle!"

Oh come on! Protagonist benefit twice in a row! I thought we bonded Missy~
"You tried to distract me while the tyke-bomb I'm supposed to be watching ran away. You call that bonding?"

"I mean, Magi Mis. Magius?"

It's nice to know that she's possibly out and proud in this world. Though I do wonder exactly what she is.

Frontrunners: Koraidon (With her counterpart among the local Gnomes equivalent being Miraidon, one of few actually local options even if it possibly completely ignores the canon for what this duo actually are), Entei (Fire type Beast), Cresselia (Psychic is also a valid type for Roselia, putting Darkrai amongst the not-Gnomes to match how Argres is consumed by darkness), a Latias (To capture for our dragon/psychic team! Because Pokémon that can pull off a good human disguise are rare, even amidst Legends), and Diancie (Fits well with Erika's Carbink as Celine)

Well, I'm glad it's known among some of Class VII that Raifort fucking sucks as a guardian, and if we thought it work CPS would've been here weeks ago.
She just has those abuser vibes. Just one look at her and you know "Yeah, she abuses her non-binary child and we should all hate her."

Honestly, with how the Tinkatink line has been presented in this quest, I'm kind of partial for waiting to catch one. I personally think Aron and Charcadet are cool too. I do think we definitely need to buy healing items if we're going to wait until the end of the week for the gym though.

Assuming that we only have two AP today because we took a train ride, so we'll have 3 AP for the next three-four days (can we confirm if it ends Thursday or Friday), and since we know Mandatory Tasks don't cost AP...

I'm thinking today...
[] Plan: Last Minute Packing
-[] When In Rime
-[] Cortondo Cart

  • Lowers DC of all Mandatory and Optional Tasks for Tuesday and Wednesday by 2
  • Increases Bond with Elise and Ostia
When In Rime's reward is a no brainer, I like the 10% boost. On the Bond side, I've been hoping to interact with Elise more to see if she's anything like Rean and his black hole of harem-drawing denseness. You also can't go wrong with talking with Ostia more.
  • Lowers DC of all PROW Rolls during the Field Exercise by 2
  • Current Pokedollars: 33,000
  • Increased Bond with Erika and Manuel
  • Allows the purchase of healing items as well as some Simple and Advanced TMs
  • Healing Item Cost Range: 3,000 - 10,000
  • Simple and Advanced TM Cost Range 15,000 - 40,000
The PROW DC lowering could be important, I'd rather not be hurt so this would be good. I'm not sure how much I'm willing to spend on healing items but we'll see when we get there. Probably not even worth bothering getting a TM but I guess we'll see.

Anyways.

As for the next few days? Again, assuming three AP per day.

Champ In The Makin' can be done tomorrow or maybe even the day after if Friday is a thing. Which'll leave us with 2 AP again for basically the rest of the FE.

For the next few days, assuming we go for the quest-locked pokemon and don't just leap for Charcadet or Drilbur, we'll be doing their quest. Which I'd estimate to be around 2 days likely and 3 at max.

Leaving us with 1 AP for the next few days, which means Optional Tasks or whatever comes up. If we never change a lightbulb on one of the Routes are we even a Trails character? So we're doing that at least. Other than that, we're free.

Keeping in mind if we don't go for the quest-locked pokemon like Tinkatink, Pawniard, or Combee, we can just grab a pokemon for 1 AP and be much more free with AP over the next few days.

I'd just prefer to do When In Rime and Cortondo Cart day 1 while we have the time. I like lowering DC"s.

I'm honestly torn over Aron (mega evo), charcadet, nacli, or teddiursa

As for action, exploring and shopping for the dc reduction is good even if all we get is the cheapest healing item

[] Shopping and catching
-[] Cortondo Cart
-[] Going into Tall Grass (Badajoz Ruins)

My proposal would be catching Charcadet and getting some healing items. If we catch a pokemon (any pokemon) they may be injured, either due to proving ourselves in battle, saving them from something, finding them wounded, etc. So if we want Charcadet to be in fighting shape, we catch them early.

This means starting queuing for the Gym tomorrow, leaving us two free AP for optional exercises and further prep.

The average strength of Pokemon in these biomes is probably 1st badge, with Badajoz Forest around 2nd badge level. Zero badge only feels likely for very young pokemon or the first stage of Types like Bug.

Based on the narration of the other quest locked pokemon, we get them at quest completion if we want I think. Less going hunting for one with permission and more one of them joins us after being impressed with our handling. Think Ash's Bulbasaur and Squirtle.

So day 2

That seems like wishful thinking to me. The option would not have "unlocked by mandatory/optional tasks" next to it if you did not have take it seperately from the mandatory/optional task.

I also think we should be careful with our choice of pokemon, though that might just be my preference due to not wanting a large team and constantly swapping between them and collecting them
