The Need to Protect
Damn, a quarter of the way through already. Say, does anyone know what happened to this guy? Sent away in time, given regular training, stasised away until the Geneseed projects are done?

Probably sent towards titan, dead if he made it, dead if he was enroute.

Well, if there is no official omake, then here is one (unless @Enjou objects):

The Need to Protect

Naked, he was; born anew from the fires and pains of the Chapter's training. Fifty Knights stood within the chamber he just entered. So did the Grand Master.

It was an honor for a Newborn. Not every day was a Brotherhood's Grand Master on Titan.

The naked man knelt before the grey-clad demigod.

"Do you know your name?" he heard.

"I do not, Grand Master."

"Do you know whence you came?"

"I do not, Grand Master."

"Does it matter to you?"

"It does not. I have no name. I am of Titan."

These words were spoken countless times before him. But this wasn't an ordinary case.

Because this time, the other Knights didn't know either. Not everything.

***

It had happened decades ago. The ship arrived on Titan. It was one of their fast courier ships, used sometimes when a potential recruit was found during a mission. Not large, but durable. Each with a skilled Navigator. Each with enough warding and shields to handle anything in the Warp.

This ship didn't.

When it landed on Titan, the inside was slagged. The Navigator burned alive from a mix of unholy fire and inhuman strain. In his last effort to serve the Chapter and the Emperor, the man burned and was burned to ash. They couldn't even tell which house he was from. Even the Knights could hardly imagine the kind of Warp calamity that would do such a thing. They could hardly imagine anyone outside their Chapter driving on toward Titan under such conditions. But they could give this nameless Navigator the funeral of a hero.

But one thing was intact in the ship. A stasis chamber, holding a single boy. One they knew to be a recruit.

He was very young. He remembered little. All he could tell was his planet's name, and it could be found in no record.

Ultimately, the Knights accepted he must have been flung through time. It wasn't unusual. It wasn't that important, either.

What was important was him being a good Aspirant. While some had been wary about one who arrived on Titan through such mysterious ways, the training showed that the Emperor's blessing was truly with the boy. Where a thousand failed at the age of ten, he stood unbending despite being no older than seven. He had reflexes worthy of the best Cadian, and he only grew better with training. There was only one problem.

A Grey Knight must have no attachment. Yet this boy kept saying the same words.

"I must protect them."

He knew not who he was talking about, or where he came from, but he always repeated the words that drove him forward.

"I must protect them."

They worked on it. As the training went on, as the pain went on, as the remolding went on, the words became distant. Slowly, they became a memory. Then, the memory of a memory.

And then they became everything. Everything the young man did, it was with the same drive. To protect. But the desire changed. All of Mankind was now what he had to protect, not just a few people. As the body was remolded into something new and better, so was the drive. And like the body, this drive was the best the Emperor could bless a man with.

***

"Do you swear to serve the Emperor of Mankind? Do you swear to lay down your life if He so demands?"

"I do so swear."

"Do you swear to obey your superiors' orders? Do you swear to go where they point?"

"I do so swear."

"Do you swear to protect Mankind from the ravages of Chaos? Do you swear to strike down the daemonic forces wherever you might face them?"

"I do so swear."

And somehow, from the deepest reaches of his mind, a faint memory came.

"...but I'll be able to protect them?"

"Yes. You will be forged anew. You will be His hammer, a weapon made for the singular purpose of striking down the daemonic forces..."

The voice speaking to him in that memory was strange. Yet it was somehow familiar.

"Do you swear to remain steadfast in the face of the False Gods themselves?" the Grand Master was still continuing with the ritual.

"I do so swear."

A Power Armour was brought forward. The man wore one before while he trained, but this was the first time he would wear his Power Armour. This was when he became a Grey Knight.

Everyone waited patiently as the new member of the Chapter geared up. Finally, clad in the finest Mankind had to offer, the man rose.

Turning toward the Grand Master, he saluted:

"I am ready to march forth, Commander."

"Then welcome to the Chapter, Brother Alarion."

(Yeah, I know, cliché, but I couldn't just let the guy die. After all, the Emperor did seem to have some plans for him, despite knowing how little time was left.)

@legioN7 those were suggested back during the lead up tot he first Grand Conclave. Exo-Lances and Ceramantium were not accepted, and if ceramantium ever exists it will be the creation of the Salamanders or Muspelheim and not an STC. And we have the incomplete design data for Neutron Lances, which fill the Neutron Exo-Lance role.
Removed the Exo-lances and Ceramantium. Would the Sabre-Class still be acceptable? I had the general idea that we do not have enough marines to make one a worthwhile resource and time investment, but that Callamus has a few (sub 20) scattered throughout their empire.

No idea what the Sabre-Class is. Are you talking about the Horus Heresy era fast mini-tank? Or is it another thing from Deus Ex Machina? Because all I know is stuff mentioned here, as I never read that quest.

Looking at the timestamps you may not have noticed that I had added that shortly before your post, but no, it's an orbital fortress monastery. The basic idea is that in the Deus Ex Mechanicus quest the players had managed to attract a new Space Marine chapter that was looking to set up in their sector, and they needed to build a fortress monastery for the chapter, the Remnant Blades (Distant Ultramarines successor). The players choose an orbital structure like a Ramilles, but they chose the second biggest one:
Gargantuan
A massive fort with the armaments and defenses to match. Also possesses it's own shipyards. Would take a very long time to build with your current capabilities, but the Space Marines could still inhabit the places under construction. (Cost: [six times the Ramillies-scale choice])

Here's the relevant post on Spacebattles for reference: It's not in any Spoilers, 4th paragraph down.

Even with a miniature Ring of Iron, it took a little over a century to build; players estimated that it would take about 250 years to build it without the Ring.
I added the idea that Callamus built more over the years (no more than 20), and that they hold multiple chapters at once; the quest directly states "A facility of such size, that it is far too large to be utilized practically by just a single chapter.".
It's definitely not something we can really build right now, just for worldbuilding.

Omake: Excerpt from Wonder of the Wilds Publications: Into the Hangya Hills, pt 9

Part 8

After a few tentative moves to confirm that we did indeed have access to the courtyard we began our exploration. The albino tangle-maws made little efforts to impede our access, save for the immediate vicinity of the tree and the fallen statue. It was during this exploration that we made most of our observations regarding the differences between reality and the tree's illusion.

The vanishing entryway into the clifface proved puzzling to me. As far as traps went it was not particularly impressive; while there might be some value into luring someone into walking facefirst into a solid stone wall, it is not a measure I would consider useful this deep into one's territory (assuming that this was the depths of the courtyard builder's territory). On the strength of those suspicions I directed one of the team's archaeological contingent to perform a penetrating scan on the section of cliff face the illusion had covered. Confirming my suspicions, his scan detected a open space less than half a meter into the rocks, with dimensions closely matching that of the illusory entrance.

After a quick conference with the rest of the team we had a plan: Sandeep and Cutipie would scout out the chamber and, depending on what they discovered, would shepherd a select team through for further exploration.

Sandeep's initial observation of the chamber proved fascinating. It appeared to be an antechamber or entrance hall of sorts: it was dominated by the illusions of four arched doorways, one leading back out to the courtyard, one leading deeper into the hill and two side chambers. At its center stood another white illusory pine, above which there was a shaft leading to the surface that admitted air, sunlight, and a small waterfall. Sending a servoskull up over the hill revealed no such opening, but it did discover a small stream that abruptly flowed down into solid rock. Further readings revealed that the airflow in the area of the stream's disappearance was acting as if there was indeed a shaft into the hill at that point. Direct physical exploration of the area of this theoretical shaft found the soil and rock occupying the space to be quite solid.

Based on this we decided on an experiment: the Laughfys and myself would be ferried into the chamber, where the twins would seek to temporarily suppress rather dispel the pine's illusion. As the illusion faded the spill of water slowed and then stopped, before resuming in full as the tree was allowed to resume its activities. This temporary suppression of the illusion also confirmed that the other exists to the chamber were in fact unreal.

While Sandeep began to ferry the magos and archaeologists into the chamber I examined the side rooms. In the illusion they were identical rectangular spaces, perhaps three meters by five, with their back walls dominated by a large fountain and basin. Spigots on the basin directed the flow of water into two channels that themselves flowed into a pair of holes in the floor. When Sandeep became available again we performed a brief exploration of the two, and found the rooms to be as they appeared to be. We were able to determine that the holes in the floor penetrated deep into the ground, terminating in the rushing waters of an underground river. The walls of these shafts were oddly pitted and corroded, as if they had been regularly exposed to some caustic agent.

As we prepared to move through the final door several things became apparent. The first was that the passage connecting the antechamber with the main hall was considerably deeper that the passages into the side rooms. The next was that the level of detail visible through was considerably less: while the general shape of the hall beyond was apparent, the texture and detail of the surfaces within were all hazy and unreal, as if someone had blurred a low poly render of a room.

It was fortunate that we decided to perform another penetrating scan before Sandeep scouted the passage: it seems that while the space beyond mostly fit the dimensions we could see there were a few significant differences. The most important of these was that the floor just beyond the passage was, in point of fact, not real. Instead there was another much larger shaft leading straight down into the underground river. Unfortunately for whomever designed this trap, Cutipie had some experience with a grav-harness.

What we found on the other side of our passage through solid stone proved to be the sort of thing archaeologists dream of discovering.

A question: during the First Daemonic Incursion, without the comms, which cities had their own Deathstrikes available, and if any didn't, was the problem discussed later in-universe?

welp, finally caught up and everything seems to be in transit and slightly on fire. Nice read. With how my allegiances lie, my first thought about the coming ritual would of course be what kind of shenanigans could happen around it concerning minor gods, especially malal, cause I just like the whole idea of a chaotic embodiment of self destruction.

Since I might do some writing practice in the future that could develop into omakes (no promises), some questions about canon:
first, what happened to the "eyes of the emperor" (retired custodes) in this canon. Are they even a thing here?
Second, has the power portfolio of Malal (demons, mortal assets etc) been fleshed out in this thread?
and third, are there custodes that have fallen to the abomination canonically?
edited fourth, what about necoho? Last I checked, that one was still canon in warhammer

thanks for anyone willing to answer and to durin for building all of this

AVERNUS - UNSEEN UNIVERSITY - LIN'S SHRINE

FADE IN:

The UNSEEN UNIVERSITY is a Small Hive, unique among all the cities of Avernus as being the first and greatest Psyker City - But even better known for being the burial site of SAINT LIN, The Last Saint of THE EMPEROR. It is here, in a park meant for child psykers, that RIDCULLY and THE ANCIENT ONE, a veteran Saurus dating all the way from the War in Heaven, are paying their respects to a departed friend.

THE ANCIENT ONE
(Respectful)
"After the millions of years of civil war, I had not imagined that peace would come. Least of all, by a people with but scant centuries here."

RIDCULLY
(Musing)
"His greatest act. Yet, most humans would balk at recognizing it in the slightest."

THE ANCIENT ONE
(Respectful)
"One that will remembered so long as our people exist."

RIDCULLY
"Even in death, he changed the galaxy for the brighter. Only one other time I had seen another like him. The only one who could have healed him, along with the Slann."

The duo stand in silence as Ridcully remembers the time he accepted Isha's Scroll from her hand in Nurgle's mansion.

THE ANCIENT ONE
"The Galaxy changes all the time. Avernus is a demonstration of it. How goes your hunt for Khaine?"

RIDCULLY
(Grimacing)
"Poorly. Twice already he evaded our strikes to end him, even with him in our SIGHT. The Changer has abandoned subtlety to save him, for what reason I do not know."
DISSOLVE TO:

Upon a barren, desolate world, ARHRA, the True Avatar of Khaine, makes his stand. For four Phoenix Avatars have come to end his life, force enough to have victory a certainty. The wheel of fate turns against the Fallen Phoenix, but for TZEENTCH's gaze upon the fate of his pawn. An inglorious amount of power is expended, power enough to rend apart stars, and fate is torn apart, time rewound against the force of five incarnate gods. For Tzeentch has written an edict upon reality: No Pheonix Avatar shall die today.

One again, four Phoenix Avatars descend upon the Fallen Phoenix's forces, victory a certainty as it was before. But now among ARHRA's forces there is a traitor, a daemonhost to an Exalted of Tzeentch. It unleashes itself, and with the force of Tzeentch behind it rends apart a rift to the immaterium, summoning a Daemonic Incursion upon the planet. And in the chaos of the battle, ARHRA escapes once again. Victory for the Eldar is as certain as before, but not over ARHRA. It is over TZEENTCH. An empty victory.

Before the ANCIENT ONE can reply, a HARLEQUIN, agent of CEGORACH, the Laughing God, arrives.

RIDCULLY and the ANCIENT ONE look at each other.

WEBWAY - THE BLACK LIBRARY

The alien wraithbone constructs of the dark and forbidden Eldar Craftworld hidden in the webway, once the sole intact repository of all the Eldar's knowledge of Chaos. This place is known as "The Black Library of Chaos". Strange and emphemeral structures coexist alongside slender Eldar figures and crystalline Eldar statues.

In an unassuming room in the Black Library - as unassuming a room could be to the Eldar - dark and shadowed, the party gathered. Leading them is a HARLEQUIN of the Eldar Clown God, CEGORACH. Gathered with them are some of Avernus' greatest heroes, HE WHO WALKS OBLIQUELY (HWWO), an ancient Border Lion, AREATHA, a living example of a Dark Age of Technology miracle of genetics, as well as THE ANCIENT ONE and RIDCULLY, The Blind Seer.

As the scene begins, the HARLEQUIN leads them into the room, before turning around revealing it's identity to the party as none other than the Eldar Laughing God, CEGORACH.

Harlequin/CEGORACH
(Revealing it's identity.)
"The troupe is ready, the stage is set."

None of the party are truly surprised - Nevertheless, all save for THE ANCIENT ONE show slight surprise.

CEGORACH
(Anticipative)
"Chaos sets out it's play with it's grand ritual. But we shall intervene in it, and tilt the course of it's Fate against it. We shall show them all our pieces played out against them on their stage, helpless to act."

Cegorach leans in, as if sharing a conspiratorial secret.
CEGORACH
(Eager)
"Then, you will strike."
FADE TO:
CEGORACH
(In the background, musing)
"I have called in a.. favor with Gork and Mork. They will be attacking Tzeentch."

TZEENTCH, the Architect of Fate, is facing Gork and Mork. The Architect grimaces as legions of Orks clash against the Changer of Ways' forces. It is losing, pushed back at an uncomfortable rate.

CEGORACH
"Security, of course, is rather lax. Nurgle will discover this. Tzeentch shall as well, but such is the way of things. As always with Chaos, Nurgle will strike at his hated rival while he is being pummeled rather badly by our green friends. His forces will all be committed.."

Worsening the situation for TZEENTCH, NURGLE arrives, with him a great host of daemons.
FADE TO:
CEGORACH
"Then Ynnead and all the Phoenix Avatars shall strike at Nurgle's ritual."

Show a warpstorm, then zoom inside it to the star systems inside, before closing in on a greenish, diseased Daemon World. A Grand Ritual, the likes of which are epic in scope, is being conducted. Countless humans are sacrificed, as are numerous Daemon Princes. The final sacrifice is the greatest of them: an Exalted of Nurgle. In the background, a Craftworld appears, along with an entire Eldar fleet. YNNEAD and the Phoenix Avatars manifest upon the Daemon World, marching upon the centrepiece of the ritual.

CEGORACH
"I shall then.. muddy the waters of speech for Nurgle. And with everything we have committed.. He'll return to save his ritual. After all, there is nothing else we could possibly do, no?"

NURGLE's Forces manifest en-masse upon the Daemon World, his forces clashing with Ynnead and the Phoenix Avatars.
FADE TO:

In the unassuming room, CEGORACH is stroking a Gryinx as he speaks.
CEGORACH
"With all that done, walking into the mansion and breaking out mother shall be rather easy, I should say."
FADE OUT

THE GARDEN OF NURGLE

View begins from the Garden of Nurgle. As AREATHA monologues, slowly proceed in a first-person view to the Poxyards, then the Mansion, through the Entrance Hall, into the Larders and then the Kitchen and finally Nurgle's quarters and the same moss-covered door in the prologue.

AREATHA
(Inner Monologue)
"He Who Walks Obliquely will get us in. Ridcully will guide the way to the door. Then, either I will unlock the door with the weakness Ridcully discovered the first time around. If I can't do it, the Ancient One will bust it down... which would be problematic. Either way, Isha will enter this pocket dimension we're in. It'll take some time for her to expand it. Then HWWO gets us out."

AREATHA is at the moss-covered door, along with RIDCULLY and HWWO. She is focused intensely upon the door, working through it's complex mechanisms. Progress is difficult, even with prior preparations she has brought unto the task, and knowing of a weak spot discovered by RIDCULLY the first time he had come.

AREATHA
(Inner Monologue)
"Everything's going as planned, which worries me the most. Because things like these never go as planned."

RIDCULLY
(Whispering)
"Something's up. I just felt the mansion shift just now. I think someone's come in."

AREATHA
"Nurgle?"

RIDCULLY
"No- Too familiar-"
As if on cue, ARHRA arrives to the scene. AREATHA remains focused on the lock, appearing as if she is near breakthrough. HWWO and RIDCULLY immediately turn to ARHRA, weapons in hand. ARHRA, however, does not attack them immediately.

HWWO
(Growling - Show HWWO's speech in subtitles)
"What the hell are you doing here?"

RIDCULLY
"What does Khaine wish with Isha, Murderer?"

ARHRA
"I will murder Isha, and from her divine blood Khaine will be reborn! With that power in hand I shall shatter this mansion and tear the Grand Ritual apart! And then all of Chaos in time."

RIDCULLY
"That is the dumbest plan I have ever heard."

ARHRA
"It was Khaine who defeated the Nightbringer! Khaine who in ages past clashed with Khorne and won!"
Neither HWWO nor RIDCULLY show signs of budging. ARHRA's eyes narrow. And then he bursts forward to attack, going first for RIDCULLY. HWWO immediately strikes ARHRA in turn as RIDCULLY dodges. ARHRA contemptuously evades, easily holding the upper hand against RIDCULLY and HWWO in the fight that ensues, bloody gashes appearing on the great Border Lion after their first exchange, with RIDCULLY badly wounded as well.

ARHRA is quick, and defeat seems certain for the duo. Then RIDCULLY grimaces, and glances at HWWO. The Border Lion nods imperceptibly. As ARHRA bursts forward for the next strike, his Klaive is met by the AO's shield, the veteran Saurus having exited the pocket dimension. AO gives a hateful look as ARHRA narrowly evades AO's strikes.

ARHRA
"Surely one such as you, oh ancient veteran of the War in Heaven, understands the hard choices that must be made for victory?"

THE ANCIENT ONE
"You do not. You are a fool beyond imagining."
ARHRA is enraged, and furiously attacks the trio. AO easily intercepts ARHRA's attack, and the trio quickly gain an advantage over ARHRA.

ARHRA
(Snarling)
"Fool? Nurgle is coming here this very moment. Cede Isha, or we shall all die! Only Khaine has the strength!"
As if to punctuate ARHRA's words, the mansion quakes, and the formerly placid cloud of plagues act up - The same as when Ridcully retrieved the scroll.

AREATHA
"Got it!"

The moss-covered door opens, and ISHA, Mother Goddess of the Eldar, emerges. With but a glance from the Eldar Goddess of Life, RIDCULLY's and HWWO's injuries are instantly erased. ARHRA, seeing his chance at murdering Isha, abandons his defense to charge at ISHA, suffering blows from AO and HWWO and intense warpfire from AREATHA and RIDCULLY as they desperately try to stop ARHRA from reaching ISHA.

ARHRA
"I WILL BE REBORN!"

ISHA does not budge, does not dodge as ARHRA charges at her, standing her ground as a mother would against a rebellion child. ARHRA reaches ISHA in brief triumph, ready to slay her. And then, in a comedic moment, ISHA slaps ARHRA's face with such strength that the Fallen Phoenix is smashed through the floor of the room and below.

(Briefly pause, show the Heist Group in awe.)

RIDCULLY
"We need to go. Now."

ISHA enters the pocket dimension, but slowly - In the pocket dimension, she is massive, her entering hand filling up the entire space as it expands to accommodate the goddess. An Exalted Greater Daemon of Nurgle arrives, and fierce combat ensues as the clouds of disease quickly grow denser.
CUT TO:
Upon the Daemon World where Nurgle's Ritual is held, the Daemons of Nurgle are pushing back the Eldar forces as they fight desperately. And then there is a pause. A mass withdrawal occurs, and there is no doubt as to where the daemons are being withdrawn to.
CUT TO:

Back in the mansion, The Exalted Daemon of Nurgle is backstabbed by HWWO, then slain with a strike by AO, even as more Daemons arrive and are annihilated by the remainder of the Heist team as ISHA enter the pocket dimension at last.

Immediately, RIDCULLY enters the bag, followed by AREATHA and AO. HWWO stalls the swarming Nurglings and Daemons for the precious seconds to allow them to enter, before grabbing the bag as NURGLE arrives and power-climbing through the warp to reach a hidden entrance to the Webway, entering it as diseased splotches appear on the great Border Lion. NURGLE howls in rage as his foes escape by the barest of margins.

EPILOGUE

In the Temple-City of Itza, ISHA enters, the Temple Guard parting ways to allow her entry to the entombed Slann Relic-Priests within. Isha reaches out to touch one of the mummified Slann. There is a great glow, and the wrappings of the Slann fall off as it takes it's first breath of life once more in uncounted millions of years. There is a great cheering.

CREDITS ROLL

AFTER THE END CREDITS ROLL:

Fade back to Nurgle's Bedroom, and proceed through the hole which Isha had smashed Arhra through. Soon, the viewer sees Arhra in the bottom of the pit, filled with terrible diseases. We see that Arhra, though badly wounded, is still alive, though clearly diseased. The viewer sees the plague take increasing hold over Arhra and his breathing grow heavier as Nurgle watches the helpless Phoenix-Avatar intently.

They are probably a thing, but if they're still around they're likely shacked up with the assassins.

Second, has the power portfolio of Malal (demons, mortal assets etc) been fleshed out in this thread?
Not yet.

We have no idea, we've no idea if there are any left aside from the 10 guarding Cawl.
