As well as what ever else they have cooked up through not being like the Admech, remember those Melta guns.

Yes, but those meltas are not as irreplaceable as the Men of Stone STC - research into improving weapons we have designs for is one thing, but researching what is likely the most powerful "safe" AI that humanity has ever created without the STC would be nearly impossible.

Yep, but for now the present, which at this time is killing all the demons, so get back to work and make more Omakes :D.

I'd DIMY, but I have to revise DAMN BY BIOLOGY EXAM :(

So instead I have to rely on the professionals.

The Stone Guard
Omake for defending the MoS STC. Had a bit of trouble with it, because the guards themselves likely don't even know what it is that they're guarding, beyond Important. Plus, you know, goddamn crazy Mechanicus.

The Stone Guard

If there was one thing the Adeptus Mechanus as a whole was united in loathing, it was Chaos. The way it stood as anathema to the perfect order of machine. The way it took and twisted the holy engines that they worshiped in their service, to create something that while sharing similarities to the sacred forms of the machines, nonetheless remained wrong. A mockery of what should be.

In fact, it was in part because of this, rather than just their lesser reverence for the Emperor, that they had survived His death virtually unscathed. After all, their older members were well used to seeing a beloved spirit fall, only to be replaced with a twisted mockery that tried to continue to demand their service and worship.

It was in defiance to Chaos that they gathered and built up their great machines, clawing and scraping for every inch of progress. And it was in defiance to Chaos that many of their members were willing to embrace reform, even giving up historical freedoms, to deny the newest of the Ruinous Powers access to their minds and ways of thought, despite millennia of tradition crying against it.

For this reason, the Skitarii garrisoned to guard the vaults of Dorthonion stood resolute at their posts. Although battle against their hated foe raged above, the god-machines walking and smiting down all that drew their ire, regiment after regiment of tech-guard and Skitarii marching forth, they knew that the most important element of the battle could well be here. By their actions, they would fight to preserve their stash of the most restricted of the sacred STCs, and should the unthinkable happen, and they be overwhelmed, destroy them. For while they would gladly sell their very lives to preserve the scraps of progress made under their watch, they would never allow the holy secrets of the Omnissiah to support the wretched demon-spawn that opposed it.

Clearly, however, whatever it was they were guarding was of great interest to these foul daemons. Several waves of corrupted tech-priests, now lost to the Omnissiah's grace, had already fallen trying to access this vault. Truly, they were grateful for the foresight of Fabricator-General Britton, who, several years ago, had organized sweeping upgrades to the facilities guarding their treasures. Furthermore, they had been granted access to many a sacred relic weapon or armor to assist in its defense. That they were so effective in holding back those few corrupted that made it to this level showed that this task truly had the Omnissah's blessing. Still, though, they prayed it would be enough. For while so far none had even gotten close to breaching their defenses, the minions of Chaos were nothing if not persistent.

But here they stood, solid and defiant against all attacks. A guard of stone.

Think we should make some more omakes for Saren since I think he might need them.

Idea of maybe taking one of his experiments as a mount or something?

The New-Model Commissar
So, I was thinking about how shit the whole situation is for the average guardsman/woman on Avernus--we're looking at pretty bad casualties, mental attacks from fucking demons, and traitors--and that got me thinking about Commissars. Naturally, this lead me to wondering what Avernus would think about the (unedited) Commissar Cain. I mean, he was a self-proclaimed coward, and certainly tries to stay out of the fighting most of the time, but he does follow the Avernus code of not taking stupid risks, using what you have, and being willing to innovate. Plus, I really think his preferred method of morale management meshes quite well with our own.

Thus, the following omake was spawned.

The New-Model Commissar

Upon the formation of the Trust, a great number of changes were made to the standard operation of an Imperial world and army. The Revelations of Saint Lin required a fundamental shift in how humanity as a whole must operate.

No longer could the menials be allowed to toil in ignorance, knowing nothing but they they must work or die. No longer could men and women be used as human waves in the battlefield, knowing that they must follow orders or be shot. Manpower was far to precious to be wasted so, and the threat of the Abomination was insidious.

In Avernus, of course, these messages had been recieved before the Revelations even occurred. After all, it was a world so deadly that each life was an irreplaceable asset, boasting a Governor and Administratum head who both strongly believed in uplifting morale, productivity, and the standards of living through vastly improved access to medicine and education. Within the military, extensive training and supply for every soldier was already the norm, and innovative tactics were whole-heartedly embraced. And the Ministorum was headed by Lin, who had already strongly emphasized the uplifting and compassionate aspects of the Imperial Faith before his sainthood, and would accept nothing less going forward.

And so, when the time came for Avernus to figure out where the Commissar should fit in this new organization, they immediately dismissed leaving it like the old job. Blind faith was nothing more than a hinderance in this new galaxy, and while proper discipline remained vital in the military, there was no room for the traditional "charge or die" style of motivation used by the traditional Imperial Commissar.

In response, they began to investigate the unedited historical records of highly successful Commissars, as well as interviewing those from the better regiments, trying to find examples of better ways to achieve the goals of the Commissar. When he heard they had been investigating perhaps the most decorated and successful Commissar in Imperium history, Commissar Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium, Klovis-Ultan supplied the (highly classified) annotated diary of the illustrious figure. Despite deriving much amusement from the distortions between the public record of his exploits and his private views, it was from his example (combined with that of the Phase Tiger's) that the idea of a new style Commissar was modeled.

A new-model Commissar was meant to improve the performance of a regiment not by strictly enforcing discipline, but through attention to detail and improving morale. Rather than threatening to shoot any who flee combat or are overcome by terror, they are to be trained and equipped so that they may rally the troops and lead by example. Training includes diplomatic and social elements too, as there are innumerable examples of armies being saved from disaster not through strength of arms or tactics, but through the lucky coincidence of having access to individuals skilled at avoiding stepping on the toes of the locals. De-escalation strategies are also emphasized to avoid unnecessary friction.

Furthermore, training involved a significant section on methods to overcome traditional methods of breaking an army's spirit--including everything from de-fanging scare tactics to inspiration in the face of overwhelming odds to psychic attacks.

For the first time, today, this type of new-model Commissar was being tested on Avernus itself. Never before had so terrifying an invasion come. Never before did each guardsman have to worry not only about the enemy in front, but also the enemy behind his back. Worse still, like all demons they made great use of direct mental assault.

It was here that the Commissars proved their worth. Alternately fearlessly leading their men into battle, bolstering their strength of will, and identifying suspicious behavior from those who had been lost to the corruption of Slaanesh and would soon strike at their backs, the Commissars ensured nary a unit broke. Rallying the brave defenders of Avernus, they gave it their all. For each Commissar knew that their actions were always the most important when times were most desperate.

Edit: cleaned this up. Commissar Cain accepts no less!

Commissar Cain is a hero that all Commissars and heck even humans in general should strive to be like.

I can imagine if Cain ever visited Avernus he would always be freaking out but fit right in considering his fighting skills.
