I don't suppose he's begun to study the problem of what to do about the New Gift yet? He said he'd get to it come winter, but a lot of time so far has been preoccupied with negotiations with the Dornish.

Alternatively, this would be something we'd know if we'd chosen to speak with him, and should not be answered for that reason.
He said it's madness to do anything to the New Gift in winter.

The North in general has plenty of land and resources the problem is that they don't have the population to take advantage of it all. Not surprising considering how deadly the winters in the North are. So they end up losing some part of their population each winter. If they're lucky, planned well, have enough stock piled and the winter is short they may not lose quite so many people. Still they regularly lose people and the stories in the North have lot of cannibalism in them for a reason. There a tradition of the old walk off into the wilderness at the beginning of winter so that the they aren't a burden to their families.

[X] [Otto] Agree to let Otto marry off Alicent in Ten Years.

Yeah, screw Otto. There's a point where we're doing too much, and this is it. Hell, in ten years it's entirely possible we'll be Queen and/or Otto will be dead.

Well, somebody better pick up that phone...

…because I fucking called it.

Fuck, thanks for this QM, seriously, I needed this today. In fact, excuse me for a second while I post the appropriated reaction:

Okay, right, got this out of my system now on to the vote…

[X] [Otto] Give no ground. You've done huge favors for Otto and will continue to do so. Is he really going to spit on your goodwill over a letter?

We, by this asshole admission, have done immense favors to House Hightower. Fuck we have gone out of our way to help his family and he fucking dares to ask for more?!

Fuck. No.

I know for a fact that I'm losing this vote but I don't care, this Rhaenyra is supposed to be Defiant and this Thread is in seriously need to grow a fucking spine and stop accepting everything people ask of us with their heads down. Otto needs to be put in his place.

As for the other vote…

[X] [The City] Take in a Magic Show
[X] [The City] Shop The Markets

No particular logic, just think it would be cool to see some magic or find some cool items.

Um What. What. "we gave an important role in a newly founded organization--aka read: hasn't actually provided a profit yet, this is the 'hard work' stage--to a cousin; have fun wrangling the Velayrons!" and "Hey please set my son up for a promotion after Daemon's dude inevitably fails," are far far far from the apocalyptic disasters you're framing them as. Okay sure sure lets say we bend over, where exactly does that leave Otto? Will he be able to siphon enough money from the RTA to someone hire a warlock into hatching Green dragons? (lmao no, if that could be done with money it would've already been done) Is his son's hypothetical leadership of the Gold Cloaks going to be used to launch a coup to install the Hightowers as ruling monarchs? (okay sure making sure Goldcloaks aren't buyable by potential coup plotters is important, but uh part of that means installing people who want to work with us in power so.....)

No this isn't "free." A letter is gonna have people wondering why we're courting the Hightowers so much, but "in charge of the city w/ the continent's single university," and "hometown of the biggest church," are kinda self explanatory? Worst to worst balance it out by also wooing the Vale et al more too. One way or another Rhaenyra needs a coalition at some point. She wants to do stuff that isn't sitting on her dragon all day burninating the locals.

But honestly why the hell are you freaking out. If I read your reaction while having no idea what the actual update was, I would've though Otto's request involved killing someone. Or doing something genuinely morally reprehensible like idk sabotaging trade routes to a neighbor's land, subjecting the peasants to increased food prices and starvation so that he can get the edge in XYZ. "Do some more nepotism for my son, who you've already been helping," is hardly something to break down wailing and tearing your clothes over. Seriously if you're catastrophizing about how this will End the World, I would like you imagine what sort of favor someone like idk Daemon or Baelish would ask for.

It's mostly just really annoying and somewhat insulting that he's asking for more all things considering. Not to mention that Rhaenyra is now aware of how batshit Daemon is may not end well for Gwayne. Mind you she's the only one that's aware he's killed 6 holy men but it's not something she can prove so can't really point that out as a reason for Gwayne not to go for the post unfortunately.

That needs to clarify if it's going for the Separation plan or not
[X][Otto] Stick with the Septa Plan, and instead of "Agree to Write the Letter" suggest:
-[X][Otto]Working with Otto to find a supporter of yours he also approves of, for a second officer position to combat Demon's influence in the watch. And serve as backup and fair challenge/rival/ally to Gwayne. You don't want it to seem House Hightower has too much royal favor, openly. That's asking for trouble. Better to have Alicent as governess to my children.
--[X][Otto]Try and find a suitable candidate from the Stormlands or the Reach. They need something thrown their way, what with the union with Dorne coming.

Sorry. I thought it was implied that we wouldn't be going for more concessions, but yeah, its safer to spell it out in the vote. This alright?

The implication is that if he feels further favors are owed, that the deal is not balanced, Alicent will collect on that balance once she returns. Owing more implied favors to House Hightower in the future also gives them motivation to see her on the throne.
Don't we have Steffon Redfort for this? Or is the idea to get a third fellow in?
I was thinking, if we could find one, a knight from the most affected Kingdoms with the Dorne match. Something to help smooth things over and show the Heir is keeping their interests in mind. Balance things out, if we can find a knight that supports her.

So, a someone somewhat new would be best, but someone like that from the Vale wouldn't be bad either.

[X] [Otto] Express fear that writing down a letter could put a target on Gwaynes back. You know Daemon would be reckless enough to go after him in order to keep control of the city watch. Offer to speak to Viserys expressing the same sentiments, and offer Gwayne a place at your side for the interim as a show of good faith.

I do wonder how talking to Gwayne first would have affected the Otto situation.

It's so much more insidious than that. Otto is going to gather a grand conspiracy of washerwomen on his payroll to shrink our clothes so they don't fit anymore.

Adhoc vote count started by Husr on May 7, 2025 at 3:15 AM, finished with 134 posts and 57 votes.

Pretty commanding lead for just signing the letter. It wouldn't change the majority, but I will note that there are a bunch of different "kick rocks, Otto" options that don't seem to be approval voting each other, and a couple "negotiate further for the septa thing" options whose voters aren't doing it either. City seems pretty locked in too, unless Magic Show has a big comeback.

I think the write-in is a bit foolish and tips Otto off to our suspicions of Daemon that we have decided against telling him so far. It also offers him something he does not want, Gwayne by Rhaenyra's side instead of serving in the position he holds in the Gold Cloaks which he would need to be performing the duties of in order to be in the running for commander at a later date.

Possibly intentional, but your first option is missing an 'X'.

I'm sympathetic to camp "give him nothing," but their write-in *also* fails to state a preference for making Alicent a septa or settling for a long bachelorettehood and thus fails on its face.

I thought that was already implied? 'Give no ground' means that the agreement is what we proposed and that's it.

*Slowly raises an eyebrow.*

That's... certainly one interpretation of my reaction. :wtf:

Forgive me, English isn't my native language and I suppose writing doesn't convey emotions properly but what I'm feeling isn't panic or anything like that. What I'm feeling is more like smug satisfaction and vindication in having my earlier words about Otto being an ambitious bastard who will take our arm if we offer him a hand proven true.

Being perfectly honest? The letter is a small favor and yes, the Thread is right about Gwayne being a good option. In a vacuum it's a good choice.

In practice though? We've just done a bunch of stuff for the Hightowers and Otto asked for even more and, in the post, he already implied that we're paying more than necessary even without this favor. In my interpretation he's either testing us to see if we really lose all our brain cells when it comes to Allicent or he's just being an ambitious asshole as always.

In my humble opinion Otto needs to be put in his place because he's taking way too much advantage of our goodwill. I'm not going to win this vote but hey, whatever, like you said it's not apocalyptic.

But just to let you guys know: Otto will continue to take advantage of us. That's a fact.

Well with the way the votes are going the letter will be sent and Gwayne is likely to get the post. I get the feeling he's going to die in a dark alley in the city. Cause I don't see Daemon not taking that particular opportunity when it presents itself. Otto may regret his push for his son to take that post then. I'm not sure he's aware of how deadly Daemon can be.

...this almost makes me want to vote to send the letter, not gonna lie.

Last time Daemon was gonna kill someone mildly important it was discussed in thread for a while and the actual conversation left Rhaenyra feeling a sense of forboding and regret.

This time
Daemon would find out about the letter of course, and while you very much doubted he'd kill again, you knew he'd think you even more of a Hightower puppet.
I know she's far from an omniscient viewpoint, but the idea that a character we've invested so much in can just get clocked and the most warning TS gives is "Daemon's opinion will be degraded" just feels like useless fearmongering.

Frankly, I doubt Daemon would want to kill Gwayne just because of the letter. He's not a major annoyance right now, and even with all of Uncle Rhaenyra's crimes, I don't think murder is his default choice for dealing with every problem. Otherwise, he'd at least try to kill Lord Otto, who actually poses a major problem to his ambitions.
